EDIT: Adding in the original message from the first post.  That portion is in italics.  Following that is my original reply #1.

Have you been looking for a place on CC to brag about your most recent race?  Or to ask about that strange blister on your foot or the twinge in your knee?  How about just a place to soak up some cyber endorphins from your fellow runners?  :)  Well, this is the place!

This is a thread open to all runners, regardless of skill level, who just want to talk about running.  When I use the word 'runner', I mean anyone who speeds up from a walk at any point during their exercise.  If you consistently medal in street races, you are welcome here.  If you have run or are planning to run a marathon, you are welcome.  If you consider yourself a recreational jogger, you are welcome.  If you do run/walk intervals, you are welcome.  If you walk now but think you'd like to run or you ran in a former life, you guessed it, you are welcome here!  Outdoors or indoors, if you run, this is the place to talk about it.

So, come in, introduce yourself, let us know where you are from and how long you've been running.  If you have a racing background, you can share that too.  If you have running goals, what are they?

Also - if you are brand new and would like to start a running program, check out the
Learn to Run thread, where you'll get all kinds of tips, tricks, and support from other CC folks as it specifically relates to a beginner running program.

Happy running!

Ok, so, time to introduce myself.  :)

I'm Jenn, I hail from St Louis, MO.  I have been running since (edit, it was May 31, that's technically May! :) ) June 2006.  I'm not exactly fast (yet), and I'm not always consistent with my training (yet).  But I absolutely LOVE running.  I love how powerful I feel after pounding out a few miles.  Like once I've done that, I can accomplish anything anyone asks of me.

So far I've run in 3 official timed street races.
9/16/06 - 5k - 33:51
10/28/06 - 10k - 1:03:43
5/12/07 - 5k - 33:18

I haven't been running nearly as much as I would like the last few months, but I'm working my way back into it.  I recently started cycling and am using that for cross training.  My longest run ever was 11 miles, and my goal is to train well for a 1/2 marathon in September.  After that, I would definitely like to run a marathon at some point.  I also want to run a sub-30 5k, which I think I could do if I actually trained a bit.  :)

And, for those that don't know me on CC, I've been here since Feb '06, have lost a few pounds, and am one of the site's volunteer mods.

Ok, who's next??
Sure, why not?

I'm Howard aka HK. I'm living in Fairfax, VA. I've been jogging/running since June 2006. I was semi-recently able to complete a 5K outside (before the weather got oppresively hot), which was a huge accomplishment. I've been working on running inside in the nice air conditioned treadmills, but not recently.

I haven't been in any official 5Ks, but with a little company, I'd totally be game :)

I haven't run much in the past couple months, but I think it's about time for that to change, as I want to get outside while the weather's nice, at least once a week in the morning.
I'm next! Pandajenn, you and I are running twins: my most recent 5K time was also around 33 minutes! (And I was born in MO).

I have a history as a runner, longest race completed was a 10-miler, longest distance in training was 13 miles. My goal way back when was to run a marathon before age 40. Then I injured my back (not due to running) and spent about 5 or 6 years attempting to restart my running, only to quickly get reinjured again. My 40th came and went, no marathon. :-(

Hopefully I have put that all behind me now!

Back in June '06 I began a daily walking program. I slowly built up my pace and mileage, and started interspersing occasional short jogs. Then in October - on a whim - I entered a 5K that runs past my house every year. I intended to run/walk it, but I got swept away in the excitement and ran the whole thing in 39 minutes.

Afterwards, I came down with a very bad case of plantar fasciitis... that's what you get when you do too much, too soon!!! I treated it and then around late November, started the C-to-5K program. I took twice as long to complete that program as is prescribed. I have had to really listen to my body and ease back into running very, VERY slowly!! My motto is "always do less than you feel like you can do" because my biggest fault tends to be overtraining.

I kept the mileage low - under 10 miles per week - all winter long. In March I ran a second 5K at 33 minutes pace.  Since then, I have been trying to increase my mileage, with a long run once a week, but every time I attempt to go above an hour, old injuries flare up again. So lately I have decided instead to aim for more frequency instead of one long run. I have just completed two weeks of running 30 minutes 4x's instead of running 3x's with the same total weekly time. No injury flare ups - YEAH!

So my program at the moment is to run two days, then take one day off. I also do Hip Hop Abs and I walk for cross-training.

Goals include:
- remain injury free!!!
- continue building base for the rest of '07: consistency is key
- run the same October 5K again (no other races planned between now and then)
I'm Fitnessfeak and am living in Spokane, WA. I started my weight loss journey in August 2006...and started jogging/running shortly after in September.

I've only run one official street race - the Race for the Cure 5K and posted a time of 29:22. Over the last 9 or 10 months, I've become completely ADDICTED to running and have been learning to run outside as of late (having formerly been a treadmill runner). I'm trying to maintain a sub 30 minute 5K...and, just the other day, managed to do 5K in 28:42 (on the treadmill).

I'd like to run in a couple more 5Ks this year and maybe try a 10K or half marathon before the year is done. I saw a great link to the Disneyworld marathon - they do a 1/2 on Saturday and a full on Sunday. You can run in either one or compete in the Goofy Challenge and run both! It's in January in Florida......it just got me thinking....I like Disneyworld!!!

My goals are:
Maintain a sub 30 minute 5K pace for shorter runs
Log a minimum of 20 miles of running each week
Get out and run outdoors more
Figure out how to work my new Polar F6 :)
Sign me up.  My name is James and I live in Central Nebraska.  I love running.  I am currently recovering from stress fractures in my left foot and left leg.  I have about 4 more weeks to go untill I can start running again.  I was running 50-60 miles a week 7 days a week, and that is what did me in.  I plan on taking days to cross train when I get back at it.  I actually hurt my leg before my last race but ran it anyway and really hurt it.  It was a half marathon (13.1 miles) and my time was 1:37:48.  I think my last 5K time was somewhere around 21:30.  I've been bicycling a lot latley to keep my cardio up so I won't be too slow when I get back at it :)  I would say my goals are to stay injury free and just get back into running.  I really miss it.
Hmm, guess I will go next.  My name is Deanna and I live south of Denver in a little place called Castle Rock.  My current times are 34 minutes for a 5K and I will be doing a 10K on June 3rd.  April was a BAD month for running for me....kindof took a break.  HOWEVER, I just started team training for a triathlon in August!  The running portion is 4 miles long :).  Should be a breeze after the 10K right?!?  Through working with a team and having actual coaches, I am hoping to increase my speed and endurance.  Just bought another pair of shoes yesterday....too many miles on the old ones :).
Jenn sucks.  She made me come here.

Er.  I have no name (or rather my name is really distinctive so I don't use it online, long story, but I used to get weird emails from my mom's ex-husband who she left for my dad a LONG time before I was born, so... nope, no name).  I'm currently in Portland, Oregon but temporarily relocating to Chicago for law school in August.  I was training for a marathon last year and screwed up my knee (not badly, but enough that I maxed out at 16 miles without injuring myself or straining the knee badly, so no marathon!) and now I just run 3-mile loops whenever I get bored enough.  I used to run track in junior high, but my event was the 100- and 200-meter hurdles.  All things being equal, I prefer distance running.

Goal is to get a couple 5K's under my belt this summer since I'm competitive enough that it will make me want to improve my time.  I've been distance running so long that I lock in on a 10-minute mile and just go with it.

Secondary goal is to make it across Illinois and bug jenn into running with me once in the next 3 years :)
Hi there, I'm from WA state : ) I'm a 35 year old "girl" (inside anyway) and I love running! The longest I have riun without stopping, is 5 miles. I would love to be able to run a 1/2 marathon! I feel so good when I get into that grove about a mile in! I start feeling like I could run forever! (of course my body feels differently about that!) I get shin splints pretty bad, so that has slowed down my progress.. but I keep plugging along!

I have passed the police entry test with 1.5 mile run in 13:55 300M sprint in 65 sec.

I finished 1 5k in approx 30 min! last year.

I am doing a 5K in July with a friend at work

And.. I am going to do my first trialthon on Sept 8th!
Gah!  I would never consider myself a runner but Jenn made me do it, lol.

Im Keri and from Chesapeake, VA.  Real close to the Virginia Beach resort area.
I run occasionally and have never been more than 5k.  Im slow!  About a 13 minute mile.  I have never been in a race since I graduated school and got out of Phys Ed.  I much prefer kickboxing to running but all that being said I prefer running over swimming or doing an exercise tape.  So I guess it comes in second behind kickboxing.  Except I get shin splints really easily so I need to go find a running shoe store and get fitted properly.  Hopefully after $80 or $100 I wont have that set back any more.

Ive been with CC since July 06.  I couldnt run down the street or do a single pushup when I started and I weighed at my highest 220 lbs.  Im down to 175 now.  I kickbox 2 to 3 times a week.  I run 5k every two weeks and I hit the gym for weights when time allows.  So Ive come a long way : )
13 minute mile is slow?
That's 4.6 mph

- HK, who does a 12.7 minute mile
Alright...Good job Runners!!!

Ran my first  5k of the year Apr 28th... 29:32

Two weeks later ran another in 26:30

Just last week ran my third in 25:20...

Lovin' the progress...But I used to run X-Country in High school and I really want to get below 20 mi again...
Right well, I'm the one there still at the starting line! I am a walker (3-5 miles on most nights) who has recently starting doing a peculiar walk/run (hmm like maybe 1 minute of running interspersed with 40 minutes of walking) during my lunch time at work. I am hoping to increase that to the point where I can do the 1 minute run 5 min walk that starts the learn to run thread!

I am Amy in Chicago.
I'm not a fast runner either, but I find if I sign up for 5k runs that it motivates me to keep in shape for them.  I try to do 1 a month with one coming up on the 3rd of June. I typically run them in about 30minutes as well.  Lately though, my runs have been awful I have only been running 2.5 miles and want to run 4, but can't seem to make myselg go that extra 1.5.  What should I do to get my self motivated to run the 4 I would like?
I'm Stephanie, I'm from a small city in New Brunswick, Canada... I've been running since April 2006.

I run just over 3 miles a day in 30 minutes.  My goal is to get the courage up to sign up for an official 5 K race.
Erin...I'm having the same problem...I have no idea how my times are improving...I cannot get motivated to run more than a couple miles at a time...

part of my problem I think is that I run a 3/4 mile loop...so it is easy to stop running...if I plotted out a course, I may not want to stop running as bad...

Check out this site everyone...

Hi, everybody!  Thanks, pandajenn, for starting this thread!  I've been lurking over at the Learn to Run thread only because they are so supportive, but I don't really belong there.

Anyway, my name is Jenka and I live in Atlanta (by way of Mass and upstate NY).  I've been running for a couple of years and have a bunch of races under my belt.  My best times are:

5K: 28 minutes flat
8K: 48.36
10K: 59.01

I'm slow for the amount of experience I have, but I blame it on the fact that I'm very short, 5'1.5" on a tall day.  Currently I run 25-30 miles a week.

Sometimes I set myself length goals, like: run 30 miles in a week, or 100 miles in a month; and sometimes I focus on speed training.  My long term goals are 1. to get that darn 10K time below 55 minutes; and 2. run the Rochester half marathon in September.  Uhh, I should say that number 2 is a soft goal: I'd like to make it to the Rochester half marathon, but if not, then a different half marathon in the near future.

Running ROCKS!  Especially after sitting at a desk all day.  :-)
To edunph and thatguy: plotting out a circular course would definitely help you improve your distances.  Don't run in one direction and then turn around and run back, but instead go in a big circle so that you have to finish in order to get home again.  I use the google pedometer to map out a route in my neighborhood for the distance I need that day.

Another option is to slow down your pace so you don't fatigue your legs too soon.  If you are still feeling high-energy you won't want to stop.
Yay! I'm so happy for this group. I, too, have been lurking the Learn to Run guys and hoping for a group like this!

My name is Amy. I'm 20 years old and I live in Phoenix, AZ.

I started running in October and so far my best 5k is 33:20 and my best mile is 8:48.  The longest I've ever run is 5 miles and that took me exactly 1 hour.  In August I want to begin training for a half marathon in January.

I try to run 15 miles a week and walk about 8 miles a week. It's getting so HOT here though! We have a treadmill but it's in the garage where it still gets to like 90 degrees during the day.

I just have to up my water, I guess.

This thread is seriously so awesome because reading about all the runners here makes me want to rock my run today!
Jenka and thatguy,

I typically run at a park that has a 2.5 mile loop that goes around a lake and through the woods. So you're right it's so easy to just quit there. The nice thing is that the path is marked every quarter mile.  Well, tonight I did it!!! I went out the extra quarter mile and back and did 3miles, but I gotta admit I wanted to stop at the end of that loop. Let's hope I can stick with the 3 for the rest of the week.
So glad to see everyone!  :)

No running for me tonight, unless you count my upcoming soccer game.  Which is running, just not distance running, of course.  Should get a total of just over 14 miles cycling in addition to the soccer game.  Don't think my legs are ready for more just yet.  :)

edunph and thatguy - don't forget the importance of proper nutrition and hydration, which can help you get through a run.  And of course the fact that running is 90% mental once you can go for a few miles, so it's often just a matter of training your brain to realize you can do it when you may not feel like it.

Shameless plug - make sure you check out the CC Virtual 5k and sign up!!
