CC vs About.com?

Quote  |  Reply

Why does it seem that ppl are getting such a large disparity in calorie goals when they input their info into CC compared to about.com?

about.com seems to give a much higher result compared to so many ppl being told in the 1200s-low 1300s here

I dunno, I am also in about.com and a lot of things are quite different, but I guess ppl always overestimate how many calories they spend, and I noticed something odd, when I log all my data her http://www.phord.com/cc/ ; (less the bodyfat%) it says about the same calories than cc but when I log my body fat% it seem to be catually lower!!

I've wondered that myself. Several mods have posted that that the CC calculator estimates on the low side for calories needed. The number of "defending under eating" posts might diminish if they would just use the about.com calculator on this site.

I love the about.com calculator. It went into more detail as to what you need to eat depending upon how active you are and I found that helpful.

hmm, so i havent seen the posts stating CC calorie goals to be on the low side but if they r + ppl r aware, then y arent they changed??

about.com seems a bit more practical i would say even if i dont look at the detailed info and just the calorie part.

WHY?  same company??

Very often people will get the 1200 calorie lower limit when they have an unrealistic goal date.  The only way the calculator can figure it is to go to the minimum.  This also happens sometimes when the goal date is left blank and the program assigns one based on 1 to 2 pounds a week weight loss.  Another factor is using sedentary as your activity level when in fact you are more active than that.

I've found that the numbers I get using the calorie target tool are right on for me.  I input my current weight as my goal weight and 6 months from now as the goal date.  This is what I got as my maintainance calories:

You should consume about 1,522 calories a day to maintain your goal weight of 165 lbs. Remember that this estimate is based on your body weight, height, age, gender, and activity level. It may vary slightly depending on other factors.

This is almost exactly what I get when I use any other calculator.  It's based on me being forced to be very sedentary due to medical issues and now needing stop losing and to maintain for a while.  There have been times this year when I was almost bedridden.

Right now I'm maintaining.  In February, I'll start on weight loss again and my calorie goal will be about 1350 to lose a half a pound a week.  If I'm ever able to exercise more, I can increase this.

You just need to figure out what works for you as an individual, because we are all different.

that's probably where I misinterpreted the mods. The CC calculator has me coming in at about 300 calories less than the about one does. I didn't think about how the goal date might change the number. Thanks Claire!

Claire-

hmm, to maintain i put the goal date as the following date, i never considared doing a goal date so far into the future, sounds like a smart idea!

wow, so i did a goal 6 months into the future and it did give me a higher goal, altho still about 300 less than about.com if i remember accurately.
