How To Choose The Right Sports Bra For Running

Choosing the right running sports bra is the second most important purchase for women who run. For some of us, it may seem like the most important. Many women don't choose the right bra. I'm sure youv'e seen them on the trail or track before. I know that when I pass them, all I can think is "Ouch!" Don't be one of those women! It's easier than you think to make the right choice, just follow these easy steps.

Difficulty: Easy

Time Required: 30 - 45 minutes

Here's How:

  1. Go to the store. I suggest a local running store, like RunTex. If you don't have that choice, a sports store (like Oshman's or Academy) would be fine. If you are really desperate, you can try a department store (like Foley's), they will may have what you need, but there will be less to choose from.
  2. Don't worry about the money. You may not want to spend a lot on a bra, but it is really worth it. Take a deep breath, relax, and splurge. Maybe you can only afford one now, but it's a good idea to get two or three good running sports bras as soon as you can.
  3. Pick out a 3-5 bras to try on. If you are A or B, look for these key words: compression. If you are C, look for these key words: encapsulation. If you are a D or above, look for these key words: encapsulation and compression (you need both).
  4. Take those bras and test them. They should: stretch horizontally but not vertically, have seamless cups, and be made from a breathable material. When you try them on, take notice of your movement as you jump up and down, back and forward. Lean over forward; you shouldn't fall out or move too much.
  5. Buy the best two and road test them over the next month or two. Take note of which is more comfortable, what you do and do not like about them, and how they wear. Use this information to purchase 2-3 sports bras that you can run in comfortably.

Tips:

  1. Try on different sizes to find the right one for you.

  2. Try different brands.

  3. Remember your key words (see Step 3).
