Fitness Marathon Training..any words of wisdom? Feb 07 2009
00:13 (UTC)

Hey!  I ran my first marathon last October, and it was one of the best experiences of my life!  I ran negative splits, didn't hit the wall and had a great time.

My advice: I highly recommend ice baths after 18-22 mile runs.  They are not fun, but made my recovery time after those runs a lot better (I had some ITBS and knee issues during training). Also, if you're using a training plan, don't feel like you have to stick to it exactly--it's more important to listen to your body than chasing after miles (I'm guilty of the latter)--if you can feel an injury coming, it's better to back off for a few days than to run through it and make it worse.  T

The most important thing that helped me during race day was NOT STARTING OUT TOO FAST.  Run the first 1/2 conservatively; then pick up the pace in the second 1/2--26.2 is a long way to go!

When you are stressed, what is your favorite comfort food? When I'm stressed, I don't really have any desire to eat.

Do you have a friend or someone close who is counting calories or dieting with you? No. And I'm no longer counting calories/dieting. After reading Intuitive Eating, I listen to what my belly tells me instead of placing arbitrary restrictions on my diet (i.e., calorie limits).

What food calms you down the most? When I need something to calm me down, I exercise--food doesn't really calm me down.

What food makes you feel worse when you are sick? if it's just a cold, nothing really makes me feel worse. If it's nausea, eggs.

Are you generally a healthy eater? Yes.

What food makes you really happy? Sweets--frozen yogurt, cookies, brownies!

Do you over eat certain foods that other's would think is a strange "binge" food? Nah, not really. If I've been deprived of something for awhile, then I'll overeat that particular thing.

Ever suffer from an eating disorder? No.

Do you tend to over eat when mad or upset? No.

Is there a certain food that you can associate with good memories? Although I don't eat this anymore, ring balogna (sp?) and mac + cheese makes me think of being a kid coz my mom used to make it for me and my siblings.

Currently eating anything? No.

How many times a day do you normally eat? I graze throughout the day.

Best food you've ever had at a wedding? My friend got married recently and the food was decent. I've never had really great food at a wedding.

Do you like cake? Heck yea!

Do you like sour candy? Meh, not really.

If I opened your fridge what staple foods would I find? Raw cauliflower, greek yogurt, apples, oranges, cheese.

what food do you love the most? tied between cheese and brownies!

Do fat free foods really taste any different then the full fat versions? Oh god yes. Fat free is a pale imitation of the real thing (although I prefer the taste of skim milk to full fat milk--perhaps because that's what I grew up on?)

Do you tend to be a social eater? Not sure what is meant by "social eater."

What food makes you crave it as soon as you smell it? Fresh baked bread, muffins.

Do you eat bacon or any other pork products? No.

Do you eat a lot of dairy? A fair amount.

Favorite yogurt flavor? Don't like flavored yogurt. I like 2% greek yogurt ftw!

Do you eat produce before it goes bad? Almost always.

Would you rather eat a lone or with others? Both. I like going out to eat with friends AND I like to eat by myself.

Do you ever tell others that what there eating is bad for them? No effing way!

You have $5 and it's your lunch break and you forgot to pack, where would you go and what would you get? Whole Foods salad bar!

Could you be a vegetarian or a vegan? I've been a vegetarian for 8 years.

Do you have any vegan friends? I dunno...haven't really payed attention.

Is there any food you still eat even though you know it's super bad for you? Nothing is off limits.

Do you have strong will power when it comes to resisting certain unhealthy foods? Well, I don't think anything is off limits, so I don't really need to use will power.

The general idea behind the whole "no white foods" thing is to cut out highly processed, low fiber, low nutritional value, empty calorie carbohydrates and replace them with whole fruits, veges and grains that will provide nutrients to your body in the most perfect way nature intended.

This is what I do (about 90% of the time)!

Yea, I like the Americano as well. Starbucks' coffee tastes burnt and bitter, but the espresso isn't too bad, so I  opt for the Americano.

To the poster that adds&n bsp;mocha to the Americano--gr eat idea!  I'm going  ;to try that next time.

As for the "skinny" drink s--blech.  I don't know&n bsp;what came over me, bu t one day I got a&nb sp;"skinny mocha."  I sai d those words in hushed&n bsp;tones to the barista  because I felt really dum b saying "skinny mocha."   Also, I refuse to o rder a drink using   the tall/grande/venti lingo.  Eff that.  I always say small/medium/large and my drink has never been screwed up (with respect to size) and the barista has never corrected me! But yea, the skinny&n bsp;drinks taste like azz.  I'd rather just get a small nonfat latte with no crappy sugar-free flavors, know what I'm sayin'?

Fitness Yoga or Running? Sep 19 2008

This response is now moot, but I really like doing yoga AND running on the same day. If you can fit it into your schedule, run first, then do yoga. I like this combination because running warms up your leg muscles. Thus, when you get to your yoga class, you have the benefit of warmed up muscles (which will make that first downward facing dog a lot easier!) AND the asanas will be a good post-run stretch! In fact, that's my plan for today--run 6 miles then yoga class!

Three weeks ago, I got a large back-piece done (a tree covering my entire back--I love it!) and have ALSO been training for a marathon (running from 35-45 miles/week) and doing yoga.  If/when you get your tattoo done, just be sure to follow the instructions your artist gives you for caring for your new ink!  My tattoo healed beautifully, so you should have no problem continuing to work out once you get your ink.  But a warning: tattoos are addictive--it's hard to stop at just one!

Foods cutting-out artificial sweeteners, who's with me? Aug 29 2008
19:37 (UTC)

I don't eat anything with artificial sweeteners--it's a pale imitation of the real thing (i.e., sugar). For me, it's not particularly difficult to avoid artificial sweeteners because I think they taste like dreck. Of course, regular, white sugar has no nutritional value either, but I see it as the lesser of the two evils (the other evil being artificial sweetener).

That being said, I also try to aovid eating things containing added (regular) sugar--this cuts out a lot of processed food. But, if I want something sweet (and sometimes fruit just doesn't cut it), I'm going to have something with real sugar and plenty of fat--a brownie, creme brulee (my personal favorite!)--something decadent.  Of course, I don't eat those types of things every day, maybe once a month.  But a dessert containing artificial sweetners just doesn't cut it for me...I deserve better, and so do you! Smile

I'm finding that it's a lot of trial and error with trying to lose weight and marathon training. As the mileage gets higher and higher, our caloric needs change, and we have to adjust accordingly. For me, it has sometimes been hard to figure out if I'm eating enough or eating too much. I'm burning so many calories that it's necessary to eat enough to be able to fuel those 15+ mile runs, but it's hard to eat something like 3000 calories on the day of an 18 mile run when I'm simply not hungry. I have, however, learned my lesson with not eating enough on those long run days, just because I know from experience that I'll eat everything in sight the following day.

On top of that, it's likely that many of us that are training for a marathon don't have much to lose in the first place, so trying to lose 5-10 lbs while marathon training=big pain in the a$$! Notwithstanding the foregoing sentiments, I AM losing weight with a 500-700 calorie deficit, albeit really slowly...

Recipes Hungry Girl Aug 27 2008
16:24 (UTC)
Original Post by dartrinton:

i will not and i refuse to read her book. I personally feel her recipes are simply short cuts for calorie reduction and dont solve the real raeason why people are fat. she uses "low fat" and artifical sweeteners in many of them, all these products are dangerous for human consumption.

If we just started eating whole, unprocessed grains, veggies, fruits and prepare them properly. Then we would be much better off. In stead of using "lite" breads which are basically indigestible, why dont we use less of a whole, real thing.

I agree. The recipes use a lot of artificial, highly processed ingredients which enable one to have a larger portion size for fewer calories compared with the analog made with "real" ingredients. For instance, using a hungry girl recipe, one could have 2 brownies made with splenda rather than one made with regular sugar (note: this is probably not mathematically accurate, but you get my drift). It seems like this way of eating, taking short cuts with "fake" ingredients to create larger portion sizes with fewer calories is counter-intuitive. Rather than eating a higher quantity of artificially low calorie/low fat food that pales in comparison to the real thing (in terms of flavor, texture, and the like), why not eat less of the "real" thing? Instead of 2 brownies made with splenda, why not eat a single brownie made with sugar, butter and all that other good stuff? Hmmm...now I want a brownie...

Foods Greek Yogurt? Aug 27 2008

I LOVE greek yogurt. I eat it everyday for breakfast mixed with fruit. It's a bit pricey, but it's become a necessary luxury for me. Greek yogurt, how do I love thee, let me count the ways: (1) like the poster above mentioned, the 0% Fage has 15 g of protein, no fat, and only 90 calories; (2) contains minimal ingredients; and (3) the TEXTURE.  The texture of greek yogurt is what sets it apart from regular yogurt--it's thick and creamy.  A lot of people are turned off by the sour taste, and you might be as well if you're used to eating stuff with a lot of sugar added to it.  It's really an acquired taste and I suggest that if you are used to eating yogurt with a lot of sugar, add honey, agave nectar, fruit.

Also, if you live by a Trader Joe's, the Trader Joe's brand greek yogurt is cheaper than fage.  I personally prefer fage, but Trader Joe's is good when you get sick of paying so much for fage.

Original Post by purpleorchid89:

I've tried Better 'n Peanut Butter before. It is sweeter than regular peanut butter, but I like it.

As for chemicals, sugars, etc. I don't know what you're referring to. There is only 2 g of sugar in 2 tbsp of peanut butter, which is not very much at all. And there are no "chemicals." It's all natural. It just tastes different, which is to be expected.

Eh, it may only have 2 g of sugar, but it also has a bunch of other crap in it...I wonder what "natural flavors" are? Anytime I see "natural flavors," it makes me a little nervous....I feel like I always see "natural flavors" in things like balogna (sp?) and hot dogs....maybe the secret ingredient in Better n' Peanut Butter is chicken feet or neck? bwahaha... Ingredients: Peanuts (as de-fatted peanut flour and natural peanut butter), tapioca syrup, pure water, dehydrated cane juice, rice syrup, vegetable glycerin, soy flour, salt, tapioca starch, natural flavors, paprika & annatto, calcium carbonate, lecithin, vitamins e & c (antioxidants). But, to each his own...eat what you like and like what you eat I guess...

peanut butter doesn't taste like peanuts? are you talking about the natural stuff in which the ingredients are...wait for it...peanuts?

Anyway, I know some people love the better n' peanut butter, which is why tried it...but it definetely(sp?) doesn't come close to tasting like real peanut butter (and I mean the kind of peanut butter that has only peanuts + maybe a little salt)...

Hey! I'm training for a marathon as well and currently running 45 miles/week. I'm trying to drop 5-10 pounds and have been succeeding so far. For me, I try to keep my cal oric deficit to around 50 0-600 calories.

Like you, I sometimes find it difficult to eat without feeling uncomfortably full, especially as my long runs get longer and longer. I've noticed, though, that if I don't eat enough, it catches up with me the next day and I'm like a bottomless pit! So I try to keep my deficit to around 500-600 calories, even if I'm not feeling particulalry hungry, just because experience tells me that it will catch up with me later.

Weight Loss looking down at some foods Aug 16 2008

I'm the same way!  I'm a bit of a food snob (but not wholly snobby--on occasion, I do like to indulge in food laden with chemical goodness and sugar, e.g., taco bell, doritos, coke from the fountain).

When I'm at work for instance, and I see a jar of Hersey's Kisses sitting on my secretary's desk, I think: that's not even real chocolate!  Why waste my precious calories on that drek when, if I really want chocolate, there are so many better options (e.g., chocolate makers such as Michel Cluizel, Pralus, Valrhona come to mind...yum!).  As such, the crappy hersey's kisses are not so appealing anymore.  The only downfall is that my food budget is pretty up there b/c of my snobby taste.  Oh well.

Croweej - I agree that they are the most natural, simplest bars that you can get.
But for example looking at the 35FiberDiet bars, the ingredients are quite natural as well (mainly dates too if I recall) - but it also contains a lot more fiber and protein, which seems more balanced..... than mainly sugar.

I guess if I'm at home, and in craving for some sugar/snacks,
between eating a lot fresh fruits (200 cals worth) or a Larabar, I should stick with the fresh fruits??

I've never tried the 35FiberDiet bars--I'll have to check them out!

But yea, if you're at home, go for fruit instead of a Larabar.  My favorite snack is either an apple or banana with a tablespoon of peanut or almond butter.  Also try fruit mixed with greek yogurt--that's my favorite!

Foods Larabar Aug 15 2008

I like Larabars because they are about the most "natural" bar you can get.  For instance,  the Cashew Cookie flavor contains 2 ingredients: Cashews and Dates--that's it!  I try to eat mostly whole, unprocessed food.  If I'm going to eat sugar, I want it to be from whole, unprocessed food (e.g., fruits and veggies) rather than something like a Fiber One Bar.

As far as fitting them into my caloric intake--I think they're great for a pre-workout snack; I often eat one before going on a long run.  They're also good to have on hand when you don't have access to "good" food (e.g., when your only other option is vending machine food).  I don't think they make a great meal substitute, but they're good for when you're on the go and the only other option is Dunkin' Donuts or the like.

Cliff Bars are great!  Crunchy Peanut Butter and Blueberry Crisp are my favorite flavors.  Also good are Larabars, particularly because they contain only about 2-5 ingredients (depending on what flavor you get).  I was hung up on Luna Bars for awhile, but I got tired of them--they kind of had a weird chemical aftertaste.

Foods Any low-cal yogurt with NO artificial sweeteners? Aug 14 2008

I love Trader Joe's 0% Greek Style Yogurt--120 calories/serving and tons of protein!  I always keep my freezer stocked with frozen fruit to add whenever I don't have any fresh fruit on hand.  If you have a Trader Joe's near you, get the frozen berry mix--it has cherries, blackberries, blueberries and raspberries.  If you don't have a Trader Joe's, most grocery stores carry Fage brand greek yogurt, which I like better than TJ's, but it's more expensive.

Fitness Yoga Aug 13 2008

I heart yoga!  I practice hot vinyasa-style yoga and it has helped me in so many ways.  I'm more flexible (I can now do the splits, which I've never been able to do until I started practicing), I have better core strength (I can actually see definition in my abs!), my upper body strength has vastly improved, and most importantly, I breath better.   I also practice yin yoga from time-to-time--in yin yoga you stretch your connective tissues by holding (mostly hip-opening) poses for a long time.
