Fitness Elliptical-first time-better than walking? Feb 26 2009

Original Post by pgeorgian:

nobody will ever convince me that a machine is better for my health than getting outside.  there's more to wellness than heart rate.

You're right, of course.  I was simply talking about the quality of the workout purely in terms of calories burned for the perceived effort.  For some folks an "outside" regimen is better if for no other reason than because it helps them to stick to the program.  A program that you can stick with is going to be better than one that you dislike, regardless of the empirical evidence for one over the other.

Of course, for those of us with bad joints that can't jog, going outside for that run just isn't an option.  One might argue that walking outside is better - but then for me, at least, we're back to the "program I dislike" not working for me. ;)

I can't put my hands on it right now, but there's at least some research to indicate that an elliptical will give you a better workout than either a treadmill or running outside.  If I recall correctly, that's due to the low-impact nature of the elliptical workout.  Since the joints are not being "beat up" by the workout, the person working out doesn't feel as tired - in spite of the fact that you are  burning more calories and working the muscles harder.  Because you don't feel as tired, you are able to work out longer and at a faster pace than you can running.  (This seems to be consistent with your report that an hour later your legs are still wobbly.)

Quality of the machine is important.  I had a cheap Wal-mart elliptical for a while, and didn't have nearly as smooth and comfortable a motion.  (It also developed a little "hitch" in its getalong over time.)  I've since upgraded to a Spirit elliptical from a fitness store, and I quite like it.

Fitness exactly 24 hours rest? Feb 26 2009

Your body will also give you some guidance on whether you need more rest before exercising again.  If you are in the habit of measuring your resting pulse rate (preferably when you get up in the morning), you can take your pulse prior to exercising.  If it is still elevated from your normal resting pulse rate, your body is probably still trying to recover and you should take it easy (or even skip) to facilitate that recovery.

Eh. Not a great last week, but I think a lot of that is because of too much salt intake during holiday traveling.  I suspect it will be down a bit by Thursday's weigh-in for January challenge.

1740 / 2000  Sorry for the lack of updates while traveling over the holidays, but at least I was doing the important part - still exercising!

Looks like I'm not going to make my goal of 2000 minutes for December - but happy to report that I at least wasn't a total slacker during the holidays, managing a good six and a half hours of exercise in the last week and a half or so. Wink

2000 seems like an aggressive goal for December with the holidays and all... but as bobev said, it's a challenge, right? I've got a good start, anyway. Cool

LOL. That's two months in a row that my weight on the 1st is higher than my weight on final weigh-in of the previous month. What's up with that?

Anyway... I'm in again.

In the end, I just couldn't accept coming in so close to goal and not finishing... so climbed onto the elliptical with a long movie playing and just pushed and went for it.

Now if you'll all excuse me, I need to go crawl into a corner and not move for three days... LOL.  (Except, I guess tomorrow I need to climb back on and get started for the December challenge, don't I?)

I didn't meet my goal, but I'm pretty happy with a loss of 7.4 pounds - especially since the final weigh in was *after* Thanksgiving. Laughing
