Thanks all! I don't want to loose too slow, but it could be an option during the holidays, but I think I will try to stay around 1500 give or take. |

Then I'd suggest that if you aimed for between 1500 and 1700 on a daily basis - matched with some regular exercise - you'd probably be quite successful
Thanks Jane....you always have great advice. |

Thanks Jane! I have been so off track lately- I used to weigh 248 and lost down to 193 in a bit over a year and now I have been off the wagon and gained a few back. I just cant seem to get back on track so I thought maybe a higher calorie aim would make it easier for me to stick with. I'm not sure where to calculate maintenance but I used the CC tools and just put 135 for CW and 135 for GW and got 1589 for Sedentary and 1785 for Light active. |

I would put them in a kennel or have someone watch them while moving. My last move TRAUMATIZED my cat...2 years ago and he still has anxiety. It is really bad, my vet offered meds for my cat's mental issues. Seriously, just dont get them really scared. Best of luck! |

You can buy the Daiya cheese at the Pangea website. They say they are having the foodservice version repacked for sales. I ordered today, so I will soon see how it tastes.

Ok, I did pretty well this week, with just a few over indulgences. So last week I was at 200lbs.
Today 193.4 (alot of my weight loss was water)
Goal WI for next Monday 191.
Also my other goal for this week is to kick in the exercise again.
Have a great week all! |

Ok, so today is WI day and I can say I have a GAIN! I really have not been on the wagon lately, but I am ready to go today. I saw some pics of me before I lost 50lbs and that really motivated me to loose the last 50 lbs. So I am ready for a great week.
Start Weight: 196
Todays Weght : 200
Goal for next Monday: 195 (I know most of my gain is water weight, so maybe I can loose at least one real pound).
I also want to get in 4-5 days Cardio and 3 days strength this week.
Congrats to all of you who lost this week. |

I just got back from my first session at the gym!!! I am def. feeling it! I didn't want to leave either, but my husband who went with me (yay hubby!) wasn't feeling too good so we had to leave, but I did manage to make my hour mark per my weekly goal! I also did 45 minutes/ 10.5 miles on the stationary bike! I know I'll feel it tomorrow! :) Good luck everyone for our first week!
What if we make our weigh in day on Monday's since today is the day we started?
Jessica :)
Monday's sound good to me, plus that keeps us honest all weekend.
I also want to change my exercise goals. So, instead of stressing about what exercise I did or hold myself to a specific exercise routine I want my goal to be at least 30 min of Cardio 3-5 days a week and 30 min strength training 3 days a week. I think this way I will meet my goals and be less stressed. |

Power 90 (9-8-09) Day 1 |

Original Post by delaney86:
Thanks for the advice overlord 1776! That's very helpful. Good to know. I only have 5 lb weights at the moment so I will probably be investing in some bands. The 5's were good to start with though, just to get used to the workout. :)
I did day one on Saturday (9/19) but didn't get to day two yesterday.. ha! It's going to be a little bit harder than I thought to coordinate the power 90 and my 10k training, but I'll try!
Yesterday morning I went for a leisurely bike ride, did about 7 miles maybe. I had to run 4 miles for my training in the afternoon, so I definitely got the "sweat" part in.
Today is "stretch and strengthen," and I'm going to go to a Body Pump class at the gym tonight, as usual. So my plan is to do yesterday's sweat/ab ripper video before the Body Pump, and skip today's sculpt routine since I'll be "sculpting" at Body Pump. Yeesh!
It will take a few days for me to get into a new routine, but hopefully once I do it will be easy to stick with. Here's hoping!
Good luck today feinie!
I only have 5lb weights at the moment as well. Well, I do have some bulky dumb bells in the garage but I dont' know if I want to drag those out, LOL. Do it with the bands is very challenging and the movements are somewhat different (restricted). Let me know how it goes.

Ok, I would love to join in this challenge. Here goes:
Name: Lindsay
CW: 196
Scale Stepper
I want to loose 25lbs by Christmas
Goal by Christmas 171 (this is 14 weeks away so I could do 2lbs a week which would be 28lbs by Christmas, but I want to factor in for any thing that might come up)
I would like to WI weekly.
I have started Power90 and I want to start c25K next week (if I can motivate myself). So my other goals would be to do Power 90 6days a week and C25K 3 days and then get in any Wii Active or Elliptical that I can). I try to stay in a certain calorie range and choose unprocessed foods as much as I can. |

There are many healthy fortified foods (with additives) that are better for us than the "original" foods. How many people take mineral and vitamins, for example? Some foods have minerals and vitamins as additives.
I'm having trouble thinking of a single example of a food with additives that is healither than the original.
Yes, if you eat enough whole, natural foods you should get enough vitamins and minerals without haveing to eat anything fortified. |

Alternatively, you could enter it as 1 serving and then enter the specific weight of the portion you are having into your food log as I described above.

Recipe Analyzer question |

Original Post by demerara:
Hi - perhaps I'm not understanding the question...it seems a bit obvious to me.
A serving is a number of portions that you divide your food into. For example if you make a lasagne and it feeds 4, then that is 4 servings.
So in the very first box of the recipe analyser, where it asks for number of servings, you will enter 4 (it defaults to 1 if you don't change it). The calories and nutritional information that the analyser will give you will be for 1 of those 4 servings. If you calculate your recipe on the basis of 4 servings and then find that it only serves 3, then you can edit your recipe (click in the small E button), to recalculate it for 3 servings. It does assume equal sized portions. If the total weight of all your ingredient adds up to 1000g, the analyser will assume that each portion is 250g.
If you find that you have a small bit left over or you want a bigger serving, you can log specific amounts of your recipe. Start to enter it into your food log as normal, then click 'values per 100g', and then enter the new weight of the serving, and values for that weight of your recipe will be entered into your log.
I understand how it works. I'm just confused on how to determine how many servings are in a recipes (like one I make up myself). I really dont want to take a whole recipes and measure out how many cups are in the recipes to determine how many 1 cups servings there are. I guess the easiet way would be to just analyze it with one serving and then weigh your own serving and log that way? |

As with just about most things when it comes to food, the healthiest fats are the fats that occur in nature and are brought to our table with the least amount of processing possible. Margarines for example, are highly processed foods, even in the transfat free versions, that are like nothing in nature and most contain large amounts of seed oils, usually from genetically modified seeds. Butter is a much more natural substance and although it's mostly saturated fat, there is a place for saturated fat in all diets.
I think one thing that's missing from this discussion is that it's been the diet of humans for hundreds of thousands of years to have large amounts of Omega 3 fats. That's what your body is genetically tuned to work best with. But the opposite is now true. Because of the prevelance of seed oils in our eating culture, Omega 6's are now the king of the hill, and correspondingly, we see a general rise in heart disease, artery disease, cholesterol etc. Although I use some EVOO, I never use canola, soy, sunflower, safflower or any other seed oils devoid of Omega 3's.
Eat more Omega 3's!!!
Good point Johnny! We should strive to get more Omega-3s from whole food sources and not supplements. |

And I would like someone to find me any credible source that says we should not be worried about eating transfat.
Who said that we should not be worried about trans-fats?
I tend not to worry about fat either, but I do avoid trans fat. That is why I would rather have a pat of butter than margarine.
I avoid trans-fats too, and I thought everybody on this thread had a consensus on that - which was why I was surprised by pilgrim's comment.
From http://www.westonaprice.org/knowyourfats/skin ny.html#poly:
Canola Oil contains 5% saturated fat, 57% oleic acid, 23% omega-6 and 10%-15% omega-3. The newest oil on the market, canola oil was developed from the rape seed, a member of the mustard family. Rape seed is unsuited to human consumption because it contains a very-long-chain fatty acid called erucic acid, which under some circumstances is associated with fibrotic heart lesions. Canola oil was bred to contain little if any erucic acid and has drawn the attention of nutritionists because of its high oleic acid content. But there are some indications that canola oil presents dangers of its own. It has a high sulphur content and goes rancid easily. Baked goods made with canola oil develop mold very quickly. During the deodorizing process, the omega-3 fatty acids of processed canola oil are transformed into trans fatty acids, similar to those in margarine and possibly more dangerous.69 A recent study indicates that "heart healthy" canola oil actually creates a deficiency of vitamin E, a vitamin required for a healthy cardiovascular system.70 Other studies indicate that even low-erucic-acid canola oil causes heart lesions, particularly when the diet is low in saturated fat.71
Wow, thanks! Definately makes me not want to have canola oil again! |

Taking fat out of most foods does not make them artificial; it just makes them healthier.
Taking important nutrients out of food doesn't make it healthier.
^Agreed. Fats are an important part of our diet. Besides which, many fat-free products take out the fat and replace it with unhealthy additives - gums, gels, emulsifiers, flavours and colours - in order to make it taste like the fat that they just removed.
I don't worry too much about eating fat. We all need fat in our diets anyway, usually between 20-30%. There is no evidence that low-fat diets reduce the risk of heart disease - in fact, the opposite is true. Not surprising given that the heart is surrounded by a layer of saturated fats which have been shown to protect it from disease. Fats also provide the fat-soluble vitamins A, D, E and K; enhance our immune systems; increase the absorption of calcium; are a structural part of every cell membrane; and are necessary for healthy hair, skin, nails and vision (low fat levels can affect the retina).
I like to get my fats from a range of sources; olive oil, coconut oil, nuts and seeds, butter, meat, rice bran oil, cheese, butter and dairy. I buy full-fat cheese because it tastes so much better and has a better consistency. I switch between low fat and whole milk because I can't find a whole milk that has as much calcium as the 1.5% milk that I buy.
I eat plain yoghurt which is naturally low fat, and the cut of meat depends on what I plan to use it for. Braising and slow-cooking meats need fat to protect the moisture - lean meat will just go dry. However, I'm happy to use lean meat for a stirfry and lean chicken breast for a salad.
Fats I avoid: canola oil, palm oil, soybean oil (in most margarines), margarines and spray oils in general, and anything with trans-fats. Canola oil has been shown to have negative effects on health, and palm plantations used to produce oil are one of the major causes of deforestation in the rainforests.
I did not know canola oil was bad for your health. What effects does it have? |

Ok, I have an anyalyzer question. How do you determine what portions are. I mean I made a whole wheat past recipe last night. Box of whole wheat rotini, can of kidney beans, and 1lb (before cooking) of ground chicken. I added in salsa and seasoning. So how do I figure out what the servings should be?

I guess it just depends on the food in question as to whether the full or low fat item is healthier.
'Healthy'... has to refer to your whole diet and not just one or two foods. If the majority of your foods are plant-based & if you generally eat wholefoods then chances are you're getting a reasonably healthy diet and that it doesn't matter if one or two items are diet products or whatever. It's when the majority of the diet is formed around too many artificial foods that anyone should start to think about changing.
GI Jane, I like your thinking; everything in balance and moderation. No extremes. |

The "low fat" versions don't always have fewer calories and in my opinion all the extra ingredients are not worth it. I would rather eat less of something with 3 ingredients than more of something with 15. Even a lot of the low fat cheeses have extra ingredients.
I will have to check out the ingredients on low fat or fat free cheeses. I have not even thought to look at the package, just thinking it was just cheese not any additives. |

I definately use skin milk and reduced fat versions of some cheeses and yogurts. I am trying to eat more natural and hope to avoid most of the weird stuff in low fat food. I have found that if not eaten too much a pat of real butter is not much more in calories than margarine. Thanks all! |
