The Lounge whole foods: no wonder people think eating clean is expensive Jul 09 2009

I love Whole Foods.  I get anything that I can't get at the farmer's market at Whole Foods. (And believe me, I'm not rich--I'm a student, and I'm 100% supporting myself for the summer.  On the other hand, I don't have a car, so I don't need to pay insurance or gas.)

Aesthetics are very important to me, and I don't think it's ridiculous to pay more money to shop at a place that is pleasantly lit and decorated and has a wide variety of foods that I like.  Of course, I'm careful about what I buy--I'm a big fan of the bulk aisle, and I do buy things on sale.  I also very rarely eat meat, which can be a big expense.

My life philosophy is that you don't have to be rich to live well--and for me, "living well" includes shopping at Whole Foods.

Weight Loss Cruise Vacations- gaining fun memories and weight Jul 09 2009

When I've gone on cruises, I've managed to keep the worst of the weight gain at bay by doing a few things.  Before dinner, I'd always work out--since you're supposed to dress nicely for dinner anyway, I'd be all showered and fresh when it was time to eat.  After dinner, we'd all walk around the deck a few times.  On the ships I've been on, a circuit was something like 1/4 or 1/3 mile, so we'd usually end up walking 1.5-2 miles after dinner.  And then for side trips, we'd do really active things, like kayaking or horseback riding or walking tours of the port city.

Another suggestion is to keep an eye on breakfast--it's really easy to use up an entire day's calories on French toast and bacon!  I'd just get an egg white omelet or some cereal most days, and only have a fancy full breakfast once on the trip.

I think as long as you keep active, it's totally ok if you eat more than you would otherwise.  And anyway, it's so much more fun to explore beautiful and exotic new places than to sit on some generic beach with a book and a too-sweet rum cocktail.

Foods White Fish Apr 19 2009

I'm a big fan of tilapia.  It's a mild-flavored white fish, but it's a good canvas for other flavors (sort of like chicken in that respect) and the flesh is less delicate than some other white fish.  It is also a vegetarian fish, meaning that it can be farmed sustainably on a diet of corn rather than fed wild-caught fish meal.  Tasty and environmentally-friendly!

Where are you from that you can get heirloom tomatoes in April?  'Round these parts, we don't see a hint of them until July at the very earliest.  But there are tons of things you can do with them!

-Make gazpacho (basically liquid salad!) or ratatouille.  I recommend checking out epicurious.com for a recipe.

-Slice them and bake at low temperature (225-250 degrees F) for an hour or more.  The flavor gets super-concentrated and delicious.  Use these on salads, in an omelet or fritatta...

-Make fresh salsa.  Chop tomatoes, onion, jalapeno (or other) peppers, and garlic.  Add cilantro, lime juice, salt and pepper.  You can also experiment with adding more spices, like cumin, or other veggies like tomatillos or corn kernels.  Very tasty on top a piece of grilled chicken or tofu.

Weight Loss I love green tea! Apr 15 2009

Around exam time I literally do chain-drink green tea.  I put the water on to boil for my next cup when I'm almost done with the previous one.  I'm skeptical of all the extravagant health claims (maybe people who drink green tea tend to have healthier habits overall?), but it makes me feel good, and that must be healthy!

I find it incomprehensible that people watch Fox News and take it seriously.  I get my news from the New York Times online, The News Hour with Jim Lehrer (when I'm living somewhere with a TV), and NPR (Morning Edition, BBC, All Things Considered).  Sometimes I check out Le Monde or Libération or the BBC online when I want a more international perspective.

Vegetarian Why the vegetarian/vegan lifestyle? Apr 11 2009
22:17 (UTC)
7

I became (mostly) vegetarian after spending a summer working on an organic farm.  The chickens were kept in "eggmobiles" out in the pastures, where they were kept safely at night and allowed out to peck around freely in the grass during the day.  The pigs lived in the woods, where they could happily root around for acorns, and had plenty of shade to protect their sensitive skin.  The turkeys also lived in the woods and liked to roost on low branches.

After I saw how farm animals could be raised in a humane manner, I realized how far away this was from how 99.9% of the meat in this country is raised.  I have no problem eating meat that came from pasture-raised, humanely-slaughtered animals, but I don't really have access to this kind of meat since I live in a dorm and eat in a dining hall.  I only eat meat when I'm at home or I'm at the kind of restaurant that specializes in local and sustainable food.

Foods Dinner ideas? Apr 08 2009
04:00 (UTC)

I second the pork tenderloin idea.  I like to marinate it (it doesn't matter what kind of marinade; it depends on your mood) and roast it at 375 degrees until the internal temperature reaches 140--20 minutes or so.  I then let it rest (the internal temperature will continue to rise) and then slice it.  It will be ever-so-slightly pink inside, but as long as you checked the temp correctly, it's fully cooked.  It will also be juicy and delicious, not dry as is a danger with pork tenderloin.

Sometimes I make a sauce to go along with the pork.  On the side, I often like to serve mixed roasted veggies or sugar snap peas sautéed with a little orange zest and juice.

You won't kill yourself if you drink tea past its expiration date, but tea tastes best when it's fresh.

I would gladly pay just as much money for half a chicken breast, half a cup of rice, and a pile of steamed vegetables.  As long as all the food is damn tasty.  Quality over quantity, people.

(It bugs me when people complain when nice restaurants have small portions.  The more expensive the restaurant, the more likely portions are to be what a person can/should reasonably eat at one meal.)

I like to eat 1/2 cup or so of granola after I shower, so that would be 30-ish minutes after I work out.  But if you're not hungry, then your body probably doesn't need food then.  Or, if you feel like you must eat something even though you haven't got much of an appetite, a glass of soymilk or a small handful of almonds might do the trick.

The Lounge Legalize Marijuana? Apr 06 2009

As for the idea of weed as a "gateway" drug, I think that people who are predisposed towards addiction may be likely to start with marijuana before moving on to cocaine or whatever.  But there are tons of other people (like me) who enjoy smoking socially once in a while, and have no desire to move onto anything stronger.

The Lounge Legalize Marijuana? Apr 05 2009

I'm basing my argument on the assumption that there's always going to be demand for marijuana, no matter what the government does to stop it.

Legalized marijuana would decrease, though probably not completely eliminate, demand for the stuff smuggled illegaly across the Mexican border.  Instead of getting weed from a shady criminal network, it would be legal and subject to inspections.  Legalized marijuana would (hopefully) dramatically cut down the drug-cartel violence that's going on in Mexico and the border cities.

Organic chemistry.  I managed to get a B+, mainly because my school is notorious for grade inflation and because an AMAZING chemistry tutor lives in my residential house.  But orgo at my school is... intense.  We learned about the equivalent of Organic I and II in a single semester, and this wasn't even an advanced class for chem majors or anything.

I'm never taking a class with pre-meds again.  Never ever ever.

Recipes Sugar free Chocolate Mousse Apr 02 2009

It shouldn't be that difficult to make your own low-cal chocolate mousse from scratch.  Chocolate mousse is usually made with all whipped cream, all (uncooked) egg whites, or, most commonly, a combination of the two.  Find a recipe that is based on egg whites and uses cocoa powder instead of melted chocolate.  And if you must, you could probably use Splenda or something instead of real sugar.

Vegetarian what are good protein snacks for vegetarians? Apr 02 2009

I second the yogurt recommendation.  I like to get Greek yogurt (Fage 0%), because I prefer the thicker texture and tangier taste to that of the normal yogurt sold in the US.  It's got about 15 g protein per 6-oz serving, and is delicious mixed with a little pectin-free fruit preserves or honey.

My current afternoon snack obsession is an organic rice cake topped with a tablespoon of crunchy natural peanut butter.  It's about 170 calories, and keeps me full for hours!

Foods Cold Sandwiches = Barf City Apr 02 2009

My favorite sandwich:

-Whole-wheat or multi-grain bread (preferably from a good bakery, not the kind that comes wrapped in plastic from the supermarket)

-Smoked turkey

-Dijon mustard

-About 1/3 of a Granny Smith apple, sliced thin

-About 1 oz extra sharp aged cheddar, also sliced thin

-Lettuce

-Tomato

That's what I get from the fancy sandwich shop near where I live.  Of course, I'm always a fan of the caprese sandwich from the other fancy sandwich shop near where I live, especially in tomato season...

Vegetarian vegan while abroad? Mar 31 2009
20:20 (UTC)

I am going to warn you that it's going to be really hard to find vegan food abroad, especially if you're travelling with a structured program and don't have much time to hunt around on your own.  In many countries (I'm looking at you, France) people seem to take it personally when you say you don't eat meat.  In central Europe, there's yogurt and sour cream in everything, and salads are often covered in mayonnaise.  And even when you ask for something without meat, it still might be cooked in chicken stock.

I would recommend that if you can, loosen up on your diet a bit.  One of the best ways to experience a culture is through its food, and it would be a shame if you couldn't experience that.  If that's not an option for you, pack lots of granola bars or lara bars and a jar of peanut butter.  You can also usually get good bread and fresh, local fruits/vegetables from markets.

Foods local but not organic or organic non local?? Mar 17 2009

It's so easy to find local and organic produce in NYC!  The Union Square Greenmarket is one of the best/largest farmers' markets in the country, and many of the vendors there are organic.  In fact, the produce is so great that I've often seen chefs from nearby high-end restaurants picking up stuff for that evening.  Better yet, it runs all year and is open several days a week.  If you don't live in Manhattan or can't get over to Union Square easily, there are tons of other farmers' markets in all five boroughs.  Check out http://www.cenyc.org/greenmarket.

Fitness SAUNA HELPS BURN CALORIES?UrgENT.. Mar 17 2009

You will burn more calories than if you're sitting in a regular, 70-degree-Farenheit room.  Your body has to work to maintain the correct internal temperature, whether you're in a hot or cold environment.  But my guess is that the increase in calories burned compared to a resting state isn't huge.  And besides, isn't it supposed to be dangerous to sit in a sauna for too long?  My gym doesn't have one, but whenever I find myself at a spa that does, I never stay in for more than 15 minutes or so.

4. Conventional

FYI, "wu-long" tea is just a different transliteration of oolong.  There have been studies that suggest that tea aids weight loss, but I wouldn't use it as a magic bullet or anything.

*Off to make a pot of delicious bai hao oolong tea from Taiwan!*

I don't want to give up my makeup or heels, which troubled me for a long time, since they're the Patriarchy's Tools of Female Opression and all that.  My solution is to date men that care (almost) as much about their appearance as I care about mine.  My friends, who are all beautiful, sexy, intelligent ladies, agree with me.  Just letting you all know.

(Of course, more uncouth bearers of the Y chromosome probably couldn't keep up with gals like me.  But whatever.)

I adore Laura Mercier oil-free foundation.  I've been switching brands for years, and I've finally found the one that I'm happy with and looks good on my uneven skin.  It's kind of pricey for a college student like me ($36 for a bottle, I think), but totally worth it.  Most of the time I don't bother with concealer, but when I do, I like the concealer from Cargo.

Most of my other makeup is from Nars or Clinique. (Black Honey lipstick FTW!)

always walking around like a male fashion model---NO THANKS!

if my man can't be as amazing in shorts and a t-shirt as he is in a suit then he isn't for me.

I usually wear high heels, lacy panties and bra, skintight jeans, and full makeup, which I wear because I think I look hot when I dress this way, but it can be expensive, time consuming, painful, or some combination of the three.  In addition, to be well-groomed I need haircuts every 6-8 weeks ($100 a pop, at least) and need assorted moisturizers and skin creams to maintain an even complexion.  And yes, I know I don't have to do this, and I am aware that I am somewhat excessively vain of my appearance. But to be considered an attractive woman, a good portion of this is unavoidable.

I'm a feminist, but I'm not about to go burn my bras and stop waxing.  I'm going to hold my men to standards that are just as high as the ones that men hold for us.  And I know these guys are out there--I've dated several.  I just wish there were more!

Dear Caprette, Meima, and Azirra,

If I may be so bold, perhaps you may find what you seek in each other, instead of hoping for (seemingly mythical) cultured, groomed men. Also, women are better in bed. Just putting it out there.

Love,

Dear Trustwomen,

I like ladies, too.  Particularly the ones who appreciate my 4-inch heels and lacy lingerie...

You did the right thing by talking to him about it.  He probably didn't even realize how often he was doing it.  If he starts doing it again, tell him how you feel again.  But also remember that he does have exes, and those experiences probably make up an important part of who he is, just like any relationship.  What matters is that he's with you and cares about you now.
