Motto #1: I can have fun without alcohol!  (10 points per weekend)

This won't be hard for me as long as I remember it!  I like to sip bourbon every once in a while.  I'll have to tape a big "NO" note on the bottle.

Motto #2: I choose people over food!  (10 points per weekend)

Hmmmm....I gotta do something with the kids.  Ok...I will either play a board game or let them laugh at me as I try to play a game on the Gameboy. 

Motto #3: I can eat out without going overboard! (10 points per weekend)

I'm not tempted to go overboard at one sitting very often.  Lately, I've fallen into the trap of wanting to eat out too often because it's easier.  So...no more than 2 times eating out this weekend, including fast food, from Friday evening to Monday morning.

Motto #4: I can treat myself without food! (10 points per weekend)

I want a nap on Sunday afternoon!

List all the things that first motivated you.  Things like shopping in a store with "normal" sizes, walking in a crowded area without feeling like you're going to back into someone, being able to keep up with "normal size" walkers, etc.

Review this list every day or as needed.  Eating is short-term gratification.  Keep your eyes on the long-term prize and skip the short-term stuff.

You don't talk about your eating plan...if it's been consistent for a while, then change it up. 

If you get most of your calories later in the day, switch it until morning.  Eat supper foods for breakfast and breakfast foods for supper. 

Mix up the kinds of veggies you are eating.  If you usually eat them raw, then cook them.  If you usually eat cooked veggies, then eat them raw.

After a few weeks, you can probably return back to your regular eating patterns if you'd like to.

To avoid the yo-yo, choose changes that you can live with forever. 

If you can't give up chocolate until death-to-you-part, then severely limit the quantity.  If you can't work out at the gym 5 days a week for the next year or two, then pick a main activity that you CAN do and count the gym as a bonus.

A friend of mine wore a slip over some tights.  She used glitter paint and other things to write on the slip.  She wrote "ego" and "psychoanalysis" and some other stuff.

It was a Freudian Slip

Before I cared about what I ate/drank, I drank 2 - 3 diet cokes per day.  Now I drink 2 - 3 per week.  I can't prove it, but I am convinced that the diet cokes had a lot to do with causing sugar cravings. 

I now drink water, 2 cups of milk per day, and an occasional glass of white wine in the evening.  Sometimes I mix up a pitcher of cherry/pomengranite Crystal Light, but I can drink the whole pitcher, so I don't think that's good for me, either!  I only have diet coke when we go out to eat, so it's a real treat.  The feeling of being "treated" makes it easy to refuse an appetizer or dessert, because I have my diet coke.

When this happens to me, I have to do something drastic, like spend a day at a state park and walk trails, etc. and NOT take food with me.  I might take fruit and peanut butter, but that's about it.  In otherwords, I have to put myself somewhere where pancakes, muffins, etc are not available.  One day is all it takes me to get back on track.

Yep.  I agree.

My favorite movie ever is Moonstruck.  Loretta's mom has a theory that men cheat because they are afraid they're going to die.  In a wonderful family scene when they're all eating breakfast, she reminds her husband that he's going to die anyway. 

This is a great scene.  Now I want to watch the movie again...

Frustrating, isn't it?  That's why the weight log here has a trend line.  Our daily weights go up and down--it's the trend that's important.

I gain up to 4 pounds if I eat salty food (like Chinese or pizza) then the four pounds goes away.  You're doing the right things.  Keep at it!

Yep.  If you like nuts, mix them with nuts.  Dried cranberries can be used in place of raisins in most receipes.  I also like them in oatmeal.

When I go overbudget with the calories early in the day, I stick to the original plan for the rest of the day.  I don't try to "make up for it," because that leaves me hungry (ok, starved) and more likely to blow it more.  I feel like I'm back in the saddle much quicker by returning to the original plan.

This is something that will happen for the rest of our lives.  It's just a blip--kinda like we have to get the oil changed in our cars every so often.

Well, I guess that's kind of a weird analogy....

Refrigeration helps to slow down over-ripening, which leads to fuzzy blueberries and brown strawberries.  If you like them at room temp, leave them out until they are starting to turn, then stick them in the fridge.  If you have a lot of berries, then you can spread them out on a cookie sheet, put them in the freezer, then once frozen put them in a ziplock back and keep frozen.  When you freeze them this way, you don't have to thaw out the whole bag--you can just take out what you want.

I usually leave kiwi's sitting out.  The ones I can get at the store aren't very ripe.  I leave peaches and plums sitting out unless they begin to get too ripe.

Hey...why don't we just trick the brain into thinking we're full?  Seems like that would be easier than trying to trick the brain into see the food as moldy.  I'd probably just go back for 2nds if I did that.

Garrison Keillor was telling a story one time about Easter Sunday service.  He was talking about the men who were there simply because their wives made them come.  He said these men would sit in the pews, wanting to believe, and hoping they would become Christian "by osmosis."  Your post reminded me of that and made me smile.

I think there are some churches that you would feel welcome in.  I believe the Universalist church is stong on values but not does not require a belief in Christ's divinity.

I've heard good things about this exercise video from Richard Simmons.  It is made for people who must sit down to exercise.  If this is your situation, maybe this will help spur the weight loss along.

I exercise to his Sweatin' to the Oldies DVDs and like them a lot.  Of course, some people can't stand Richard Simmons, but I think he's fun.

My family did not go to church and I really don't know if my parents believed in God or not.  They probably did because "nice people do."

I made some bad choices in high school and God finally got my attention in an unusual way.  I began going to a weekly Bible study.  We did it "old school"--worshipping in peoples' homes like the early disciples did.  I did not go to church.

Life happened and as I moved around and found myself in different communities, I could not find home-based worship opportunities, so I turned to churches because I knew I could find Christians there.  I had a lot of trouble finding a church that put God's priorities first.

I don't like religion, but I rely on Faith.  IMO, Jesus was a radical liberal--telling the religious fundamentalists of His day that it was time for a change.  They'd gotten off track.  They were more interested in rules, regulations, knowledge, and appearnces than they were about the welfare of widows and the sick.

I finally found a wonderful church who is focused on missions (local food pantry, Habitat for Humanity, youth missions, adult missions in the US and Mexico, Financial Peace University, Divorce Care, Parish Nurse).  Faith is more important than religion within my church family.  There is an amazing prayer ministry within this church that benefits the whole community.

Faith is from God.  Religion is a tool that people create to make it easier to live by faith.  But sometimes the religion becomes the authority and that's when we Christians are not very pleasant to be around.

In my opinion, anyway.

 If you've made it 24 hours, you are doing well.  I used Chantix (perscription med) to help me quit.  It was expensive because my insurance didn't cover it (some do); cost about $150/month and I needed 3 months worth, but it's the only thing that worked for me so it was worth every penny.  If you are looking for ways to fend off the cravings, my MIL used pretzel rods to give her mouth and hand something to do.  They are low fat and apparently help.  I've heard of other people using lollipops, carrot stick, etc.  None of that worked for me though.  You could try the patch, but when I tried it all I did was take off the patch and smoke.  You might have better results though if you've already made it for 24 hours.  Good Luck!

Yep...I used Chantix, too.  One other thing that helps--get one of those kids bubble/bubble wand things.  You know...the bottle of soaply liquid that has the wand you dip into it and blow bubbles with?  That way you have something to play with in your hand (the wand instead of the cigarette) and you get to inhale/exhale when you blow bubbles. 

There are several people on CC+ that quit smoking.  Hang in there and let us know how you do.

I went to a quit smoking clinic a few years ago.  They explained that the statistics show that while the clinics increased a person's chances at stopping smoking, the odds were still against everyone in the room.  Rarely do people stop on the first try.  However, each time a person stops smoking, the odds get better and better that the person will not relapse.  That was true for me.  I quit two or three times after that stop-smoking clinic and now I'm off of the nicotine for good--smoke free for over a year and I have no desire for a smoke.

I think changing our habits and our health works the same way.  The change won't be "permanent" the first time we try it.  As soon as we recognize that we've fallen off, we need to restart.  And restart.  And restart.  Eventually we will acquire the new habits.

Don't give up and don't let you mind psych you out by blaming the depo or the thyroid.  Let us know how you do.
