My nutritionist really stressed just to eat whatever I felt like eating, as long as I had enough calories. This was hard at first since I freaked out about eating too much (I don't know if you have this worry), so I ended up eating a lot of nuts, dried fruit, and crackers (I'm vegetarian). Honestly, though, from my experiences it is amazingly difficult to gain weight. That may sound strange living in a society where about 33% of Americans are overweight, but if you try to gain healthy weight, it is harder than it sounds. As a starting point, it takes about an extra 500 calories a day to gain 1 lb/week, but keep in mind that at the moment your metabolism is probably slowed. Once you start eating more, it will probably sky rocket like mine did, taking even more calories. If you are looking for a meal plan, though I suggest you take a look at this:http://www.snac.ucla.edu/pages/Resources/Hand outs/HOWtGain.pdf The pdf has great ideas to increase calories without increasing the amount of food, which was great at the beginning. Some of the ideas are not the healthiest, but you should know that it really doesn't matter right now. If you are as low in weight as I was, then the main priority is just to get some muscle back (also, if you are worried about fat, know that hormones such as estrogen are stored in fat, and foods high in fat don't necessarily turn to fat--they are just condensed energy). |

Chili paste actually has anchovies in it, depending on the brand. Just read the label carefully. Mock meats sometimes contain eggs. Soups! Most are made with chicken stock, but progresso makes vegetarian soups. You should still check the label for things like eggs and milk. Sometimes the eggs show up in noodle soups. |

Not to be rude, but are you even a vegetarian?
Secondly, you assumed that my father was correct in assuming that I recieved my information from the internet. However, I thouroughly researched the topic in books at the library as well as on educational and research data bases (paid for by the college). I recognize that many cows are treated humanely, but the industry has become so overgrown that many are not. And veal, the byproduct of the dairy industry, is undeniably wrong to me, regardless of how the dairy cows are actually treated. |

I have a BMI of 16.5 right now (recovering anorexic). I lost a lot of weight over the summer, so people started saying that I would get blown away in the wind. I also get people saying (behind my back) that I am like a stick and that I'm going to snap if they touch me. The worst one: the classic "you need to go eat a sandwich" line. People don't know that I was anorexic, so they don't see any problem with commenting on my body. It is beyond irritating though. |

| Weight Loss | how many calories do you all eat in a day?? | Aug 21 2008 18:36 (UTC) |

I eat around 600 calories in a day if I'm being honest. It sounds pretty low but I fell sick when I eat more than around 800. I'm trying to get rid of this semi-anorexia thing, so don't be like me. :P |
