I've been to the bakery before and the cupcakes are darn good! I also have the cookbook, though I have yet to make anything. |

1. favorite leafy green -- spinach 2. favorite veggie meat product -- Match Italian "sausage" 3. favorite veggie breakfast food -- pancakes 4. favorite veggie appetizer --stuffed mushrooms 5. favorite way to have tofu --grilled 6. favorite beans? -- black beans 7. milk preference -- soy or hemp 8. favorite veggie recipe -- grilling a ton of veggies, wrapping them up in a tortilla, and slathering it all in tahini sauce 9. have you ever had meat? -- yes 10. do you occasionally eat meat? -- absolutely not 11. if you were a prior meat eater, what food would make you most likely to go back...not saying you ever would actually do it, so i guess your favorite meat. -- scrapple...but I would never eat it again because I know what's in it now. 12. does your romantic partner [if applicable] meat? if so does it make it hard -- Yes, my husband eats meat and always will. It can be hard sometimes when we go out to eat...not many steakhouses have vegan options! We are both understanding of the other's choice, so most of the time it's a non-issue. |

| Vegetarian | Where has all the tolerance gone? | Jul 29 2009 21:16 (UTC) |
|
I think we all do the best we can. I'm vegan, but I don't look down on vegetarians, pescatarians, omnis, or anything in-between. It was a long road for me to get where I am now. I'm also married to an omni and want to live my life peacefully. I don't push my diet on others, and in return I ask for tolerance about my lifestyle. If someone asks, I will talk about my lifestyle choice as long as the conversation doesn't take a sour turn. There are times when I end up on the defensive, but I jusy try to be as tolerant as possible. Bottom line: no one likes to be told what to do or how to life their life. |

| Vegetarian | What exactly defines "processed" foods? | Jul 29 2009 21:08 (UTC) |

I believe tempeh is considered unprocessed, or very minimally processed. Also, whole grains have a good amount of protein in their natural state. Hemp is another great source. |

I guess in theory anything is bad in excess, but you'd really have to work hard to OD on fruit. I'd watch it with the really dense/sugary stuff like bananas or anything dried. I eat 1-2 pounds of fruit every day, especially in the summer! Like you said, it's just important to balance it out with fat, carbs and protein. As far as veg junk food, I usually go with dark chocolate. I like to keep a bag of chocolate chips in the fridge for snacking. I also really like flavored nuts, such as cinnamon almonds. Heck, even oreos are vegan ;) |

Parma is really, really good. I love using it on veggies or with Italian dishes, and I've even made pesto with it. The Follow Your Heart cheeses are alright, but they don't melt particularly well. I can't eat them right out of the package because they're a little slimy. The nacho flavor is my favorite. Hands down, the best vegan cheese I've tried is Dr. Cow nut cheese, though it is pricey. Teese (Chicago Soydairy) is a close second. I've had the mozarella and cheddar varities and they are both pretty tasty. |

| Vegetarian | Lactose intolerance question... | Jun 12 2009 17:21 (UTC) |
1 |
Tender, I'm also lactose intolerant. I'm a vegan now, but I took lactaid pills for years. Over time, I think they start to lose effectiveness...I was at a point where I had to take 2 or 3 to get any effect. I eventually stopped eating dairy because it was just too uncomfortable. Your body does "tailor" it's digestive enzymes to the foods you normally ingest, so that could be why you're having more trouble now. My condition also got worse as I aged (at 24 I had to stop eating dairy altogether), so maybe that's part of it too... |

My mom is GF, so I know how hard it can be to find good products. I think Soyrizo is one and that's pretty darn good. Also, Trader Joe's carries a brand called Wildwood organics and their GF veggie burgers are soooo good! Also, have you thought about getting the Babycakes bakery cookbook? It's not totally GF because some recipes call for spelt flour, but it's vegan and has lots of GF options for desserts :) |

CLIF bars are good, though must are in the 240-260 calorie range. I usually cut them in half for a lower-calorie treat. Some flavors come in a 100 calorie snack size now. CLIF kidz bars have about 120 cals and are tasty (just watch out for honey if you're vegan). Lara bars are awesome and those are around 180 cals. They come in all kinds of flavors like cherry pie, peanut butter cookie, coconut cream pie, etc. |

| Vegetarian | What do I eat if I'm trying to "go raw" (or semi-raw?) | Mar 12 2009 17:42 (UTC) |
3 |
I'm a vegan who is really interested in incorporating more raw food into my diet for health reasons. I don't have any intention of going fully raw because I love cooking and baking too much - I'm probably aiming for about 30-40% raw. I highly recommend checking out Ani's Raw Food Kitchen for some great ideas. It would probably be hard to go straight from meat eating to fully raw. I went vegetarian first, then vegan, and now I'm working on eating more raw food. Here is a typical day for me: Breakfast: 1/2 cup oatmeal, 1 cup soymilk, 1/2 banana, drizzle of maple syrup Lunch: peanut butter and banana sandwich on whole grain bread, baby carrots, an apple, and soy yogurt -- or dinner leftovers Snack: bran muffin or a hand full of raw nuts/dried fruit Dinner: baked tofu or tempeh, steamed cabbage, carrots, edamame, zucchini, bell pepper, and broccoli with brown rice and peanut sauce |

Purple, I would also have to say no...besides the fact that they use pigs to locate those mushrooms, they are extremely expensive!! I'd rather go for a cheaper variety that's just as tasty and doesn't require the use of animals :) |

Veganomicon is a great resource. It not only gives you recipes, it also gives you instructions on how to cook rice, soak beans, grill veggies...it has a wealth of information. It also has a TON of recipes! I highly recommend it. Vegan Cupcakes Take Over the World is awesome! I think I've made half the cupcakes in there! Omnis can't even tell the difference, I swear. Try checking a few out of the library and see which ones you like. |

I caved with the scale too...bad, bad, bad...but I'll be out of town all weekend, so I really wanted to know!! The good news is that I am down to 124, yay (from SW of 129)! 8 more pounds to go. Good luck to everyone this week, it sounds like we're all motivated. I need to try and stay on the wagon while I visit my family this weekend. Shouldn't be too hard considering I won't be able to eat most of the food!! |

I like to make popcorn...I just take the plain kernels and put them in a brown paper bag with some salt. If you throw a little sugar in there it comes out more like kettle corn. Salsa or guacamole is always good too, and I like to dip veggies in instead of chips. |

I like frozen bananas too, especially if you blend them together with a little soymilk (whatever kind of "milk" you like, really)...it tastes just like a milkshake, only a lot healthier. Sometimes I throw in a little cocoa powder or peanut butter too. If the bananas are really ripe you don't need to add sugar. |

Endangered species chocolate is really good and the dark chocolate varieties are dairy free. Tropical source chocolate is another great brand. Whole Foods also has their own semisweet chocolate chips that are vegan. You'd be surprised how many regular foods have dairy products lurking in them...I've seen salt `n vinegar chips that contained whey! You basically have to read a lot of labels. Even "dairy free" cheeses contain milk products sometimes, so watch out! I mostly use unsweetened soymilk because of the high protein content and low sugar level. I also like almond milk a lot. I've pretty much tried them all: hemp, oat, rice...and they are all good! If you're looking for a bread recipe without dairy, you should check out vegweb.com. It's a vegan recipe database and they have a whole section dedicated to bread. Also, you can sub any non-dairy milk for cow's milk if you have existing recipes... |

| Vegetarian | Quorn? | Sep 02 2008 20:05 (UTC) |

I used to eat quorn stuff quite a bit when I first went vegetarian. I mostly stuck with the plain chick'n cutlets and I would bake them in my toaster oven for about 20 minutes (flipping half-way through). They tasted alright but I always thought they were really salty! They helped get me through the transition but I don't think I could go back to them now... |

Nuts/seeds and nut butters are a great way to add calories and protein at the same time. It's still important for her to eat fruits/veggies but try to supplement that with decent portions of whole grain breads, rice, or noodles. Avocado tastes great and is higher in fat/cals. When in doubt, dark chocolate is always a great way to get calories in too! Best of luck to her. I was in the same boat last Dec and I was able to put on weight...I even tipped the scale a little too much! Tell her to check out vegweb.com for some great vegan recipes...especially if she likes to bake! |

Original Post by stewmama: It is a small world! I graduated from PSU back in 05 and I miss the town so much. My family is originally from Brockway, PA. I watched the game Sat and was very happy with the win. I'm the vice Pres of the alum association's St. Louis Chapter, so I go to local gamewatches too. Sadly, I always have to bring my own food because our bar doesn't have anything vegan. I'm actually driving from St. Louis to State College for the Oregon State game :) I can't wait!! We Are... |

| Vegetarian | Thinking of becoming vegan | Aug 30 2008 23:39 (UTC) |

Hayley, I can tell you a little from my experience. I was vegetarian for 6 months before I went vegan, and I ate yogurt every day. At first I was skeptical, but now I love soy yogurt and don't find it to be any pricier than the regular stuff...and most of the time it is also organic, which is a plus. I can get it for about 89 cents/container. I've never seen a "light" version though, as most vegan products don't use artificial sweeteners. There are low fat versions of soy milk and that's what I usually get. And since many fruits/veggies are naturally low calorie you're taking a step in the right direction. I think that many vegan foods are less processed and tend to use simpler ingredients. Of course, that all depends on what you like to eat. Many commercially prepared convenience foods will be more processed and might contain questionable ingredients. My best advice is to read labels all the time. My food costs have risen slightly since becoming vegan, mostly because I'm buying organic as much as possible. Best of luck and I hope you make whatever choice works best for you. |
