What advice would you give your best friend if she were in a similar situation?

I don't think it's a matter of "spicing it up" and being "creative".  It seems to me that he's a spoiled child who has been living the good life.

Cheating suspicions aside, why are you working to pay the bills while he sits around all day?

My dog Mable, a three year old APBT, scares herself when she farts, gobbles like a turkey and carries around a two inch square of cardboard that she doesn't chew.

My dog Woody, a four year old APBT/Lab mix, knocks flying bugs to the ground and then rolls on them.  He also killed a cave cricket once and it scared him so much he peed.

I agree that you should talk to your doctor.

My husband has anxiety issues.  Much like you, he would replay the day over and over again in an effort assure himself the he didn't do anything wrong.  He's a high school teacher and was constantly worried that something he said could cause trouble for him.  He takes medication now and it's worked wonders for him.

In my opinion, the $20 copay would be money well spent... if only for peace of mind.

Good luck.

Jennifer - the most popular name from the seventies.  I don't hate it though.  The full version has a day-time-drama feel and the shortened, Jen, is kinda cute and snappy.  My middle name is completely hippy and strange but I keep that one to myself like a little secret.

I would say something to him.  If my husband ever happens to act... inappropriately.. I would appreciate that someone (especially his family) would think enough of me to say something to him.  I wouldn't say anything to his wife, though.

Some men are knuckleheads, though.  One night my husband was out at a bar with the guys and a girl sitting on a stool behind him asked if her thong was showing.  I was all, "Dude!  She was totally flirting with you!" and he was all, "You think?  Why would she ask me that?"   He compared it to a guy asking if his "plumber's crack" is showing.   Knucklehead.

Obviously your situation is different but maybe his intentions are good and he just doesn't realize how it looks.... or how it could make his wife feel.

I would give the crate another try.   Our female was the hardest dog ever to crate-train because her previous owners taught her to go on newspaper in the crate.  We were able to train her but we had to be patient and clean up a lot of messes.  If we kept a bed in the crate with her, she would actually scoot the bed over to the side, potty and then lay the bed over it so she wouldn't get dirty.  She would also sneak off to go elsewhere in the house when we were home so we started blocking off her favorite areas of the house if we weren't right there with her.   That helped tremendously.

When we took her out for potty breaks, we gave her the command "do your jobs" as soon as she got in the grass.  After she "did her jobs" we would give her a treat.  It really helped to give her a treat and praise right after the potty instead of when we got back in the house.

For the digging etc, maybe try a kong toy stuffed with treats.  It will keep her occupied longer than just a ball.  Something to consider though, is that she might think the toy is a reward for digging?  I don't know.  We always used the kong to entice her to come to us - then, she had to sit and wait until we gave her a command "free dog" to take it.

The best thing I've found for getting rid of pet smells is Mrs. Meyers clean day for pets.  It's a powder that you mix with warm water and spray on.  Last year, we left a tent outside to air out and a cat peed on it.  The Mrs. Meyers stuff took the smell out and we all know that cat pee is no joke.

Good luck with the pup.  When our female was a puppy, I could never imagine that she would someday be a good dog.  I thought we were doomed forever!  But now she's an awesome dog - even though she's still a chewer.

ETA:  Lots of responses in the time it took me to type mine.  Didn't realize the kong doesn't really work for her.  Our dogs are suckers for treats and will do anything to get them.  We're lucky that way, I suppose.

My best friend is very thin - 5'2" 100 lbs thin.  I've always been fat and she's always been thin so over the course of our friendship, I've learned that she is often just as unhappy with her appearance as I am with mine.  She complains about her "muffin-top" and calls herself flabby all the time.  You know what?  She is flabby - she has a fairly healthy diet but she's so out of shape.  We went on a bike ride a few weeks ago and I rode circles around her.  Sure, she can be effortlessly skinny but is she really healthy?  I don't know.

I can understand that people are rude and say things without thinking (or maybe they ARE thinking) but I just haven't had that experience.

This is totally unrelated but I have a rant about my big sisters.  When my teeny tiny best friend walks into the chubby girl store with me, don't give her the stink eye.  She's there because we like shopping together and I value her opinion.  Just a warning -  I"ll tell you to stop staring at her and whispering.

I don't want to socialize at the gym either.

I also don't like to socialize at the grocery store, the bank, the doctor's office or any other place I happen to be surrounded by strangers while trying to carry out a specific task.  I'm not rude - I smile a lot and will answer/respond - but I don't want to talk.

That said, I'm slightly anti-social and can get pretty anxious in public places.   But I'm a helluva dancer!  Ha!

If you decide to let your natural nails grow, I have  a tip.  Get a vitamin E (found mine in the vitamin section at the pharmacy).  I was using vitamin E on a scar for a few weeks and noticed that my nails were getting stronger and growing like crazy.  I've always had very weak nails that peel and crack but they're beautiful now!

Quitting smoking is one of the hardest things I've ever done.  I used Chantix and it was amazing.   I didn't gain weight.

The worst days I managed five minutes at a time.  "I need to make it through the next five minutes, then I'll re-evaluate."  Then when I got a few days under my belt, there was no way I was going to start all over.

For snacking, I kept fresh vegetables on hand.  I washed and cut up broccoli, cauliflower, peppers, carrots and cucumbers and put them in a huge bowl.  When I felt the urge, I grabbed some.  It satisfied my snacking urge and kept my hands busy.

I also took it really easy on myself.  I read a lot and took bubble baths.  I got plenty of sleep and drank lots of water.  I was careful to avoid stressful situations if at all possible.    Be nice to yourself.

Good luck and hang in there.  Just think of how awesome you'll feel when you're over the hump!  (And you can go around bragging about it!)

That said, road bikers used to annoy me until I met some at the local bike shop.  I have a new appreciation for spandex clad biker legs.

I can't support factory farming.   Animals are so mistreated when we use them as food - sometimes the kill floor is the best thing to happen to them.

I don't see meat as an animal corpse.. or rather, that doesn't really bother me... it's what the animal experiences before it hits my plate that bothers me.

I recently started eating eggs because I found a woman who has several happy, roaming chickens and she gathers their eggs and sells them.  Those eggs would never be chickens; they would just rot so I can eat them with a clear conscience.

I don't really eat the fake cheeses or meats.  I make my own sometimes from tvp or wheat gluten - but that's only when I need that texture.

I think dogs should be on leashes in places where people and animals gather.  It's annoying to be unsure about an unleashed dog when I'm walking in the park.  It's annoying when people assume that all dogs are friendly and approachable.    It's annoying when my dogs are in sit/stay and Prince William, a golden retriever so "well behaved" his owners think he doesn't need a leash, barks aggressively from a foot or so away.

As a pit bull caretaker, I have to make sure that my dogs are ambassadors for the breed every minute.   If a golden retriever decides to start trouble with my dogs, guess which dogs are going to be blamed.

I've never actually called the authorities on anyone but I've been pretty outspoken about this issue and people who don't pick up after their pets.  Oh!  And the people who use those retractable leashes but don't pay attention to their dogs and the fact that they are 20 feet away terrorizing passers-by.

that's a terrible story, jen.

in many jurisdictions, the legislation around animal neglect and cruelty just isn't in place (yet).  so what can be done depends very much on where you live.  have you contacted the ASPCA?

if animal abandonment is considered a criminal offence where you are, it should be a straight-up prosecution.  the tenants should be easily traceable through those cheques.

We've been making daily calls to the humane society and the police department.  They're each getting about six calls a day so hopefully they'll pay attention.  I live in West Virginia where it's still a misdemeanor to be a spectator at a dogfight or own a dog for fighting.   Our animal protection laws aren't exactly progressive.

I don't want to encourage a pit bull debate but virtually all of my dog experience is with pit and pit mixes.

I have no idea what makes a dog "bad" but I've met pit bulls who were neglected and left to their own devices but were friendly, good dogs.  In fact, I'm currently feeding two since my neighbors split and left them.

(Backstory:  The landlord hasn't seen the tenants in over a month and neither have we but he still gets a rent check from HUD which is why he says he can't do anything about the situation.  A few neighbors have worked out a food/water schedule for the dogs to make sure they have necessities.  We're also trying to get some attention from the authorities.  If anyone has any suggestions, pm me please.  We're desperate to get some help for these dogs)

Anyway, these dogs are hardly fed so nevermind training, exercise or guidance.  I wouldn't trust them around children but they seem like totally lovely dogs.

My own dogs, a pit and a pit mix, were raised in the same house with the same training, rules and affection but are totally different dogs.

I think it's a combination of nature and nurture.  I would be the last person to say that any dog is inherently bad but there are characteristics that can make a dog "unpleasant" unless kept in check through training and activity.

I lived (and still work) right across the river from where mothman was supposedly sighted.  I've been to the TNT area, the WWII munitions dump, where he supposedly spent the most time.   There is a huge mothman statue and they have a mothman festival every year.  My husband was even in a band called Mothman.  No one around here really talks about what happened.

In my hometown there were lots of  haunted places.   My favorite was The Light.  Legend says that if you park at one end of the road and flash your headlights three times, a single light will float down the road toward you.  I've seen it and it scared me to death.  However, it wasn't as scary as the farmer who knocked on our car window with the business end of his shotgun.  He could've just asked us to leave.
