| Health & Support | Picking Feet - self-mutilation? | Jan 16 2009 05:46 (UTC) |

Hi self_loathing. Yes, not only do many people pick their skin(dermatillomania) and pull their hair(trichotillomania), but there are other people who pick at their cuticles and bite/pull out their nails (onychophagia). Trichotillomania, dermatillomania, and onychophagia are all classified as OCD-spectrum disorders. I know how scared you are about anyone finding out that you pick and pull out your nails. A lot of people who are compulsive pickers try to cover up what they do and feel ashamed or crazy. It is actually a problem that is fairly common, and you can get help for it. I sent you a message with some links about behavioral therapy and support sites.

I've made quite a few changes :] I no longer drink soda of any kind. I've been "clean" for about 6 months now! Instead I drink water-- lots of it. I don't know how much exactly, but I drink like a fish; I probably refill my bottle 3 times a day. I eat 3 cups of veg and 2 cups of fruit daily. I eat a whole bunch more healthy fats than I ever did before. In fact, I don't even think I ever really ate healthy fats before. o_o I like this thread :D maybe in a few months i'll have even more changes to post about~

If you need a high protein start to your morning, you could try yogurt, eggs, or oatmeal, which are all good ways to fit protein into your breakfast. Also, I usually eat soy nuts as a snack (good source of protein, but some people don't like the taste) |

You can bring snacks to school to reduce the amounts of meals you eat at home. No matter what class I'm in, I'm always eating something... Depending on whether or not your teachers allow food in the classroom (all of mine seem fine with it) you can bring in nuts, trail mix, dried fruit, granloa, Clif Bar, etc. You could also add a protein shake in during the day in place of a meal.

Hi... I was in a similar situation when i came here. When I began to count calories, I was 6'3" and weighed 129 lbs. I can tell you from experience, I had to eat about 3,500 calories a day to gain weight (about 1 lb. per week). I know that's a LOT of calories but you'll get used to it. I was really struggling in the beginning to eat so much in a day. ;___; |

Don't worry... that's not that bad. But to tell you the truth, I don't think you're eating enough. I'll wait for other people's opinions, but 1,200 a day just doesn't seem like a healthy amount of food. |

Just to clarify, water consumption helps to reduce your retention of water by stimulating your kidneys. About the 64 oz. a day rule, I think teas would count, as well as foods with lots of water (fruits and veggies). I'm not completely sure though, so feel free to correct me. :o |
