Original Post by orangejumper: Keep in mind that anyone native to the area would have acclimated to the water - just because it doesn't affect the locals who have drank it their entire lives definitely doesn't mean you'll be unaffected. |

Honestly, as a teenager, I can't recall the last time I saw anyone my age wearing a crew sweatshirt, and I definitely haven't seen any cool ones sold in stores. They've just gone completely out of fashion for my generation. Of course, I'm a bit of a hoodie addict myself & I do consider them jackets, so I can't really complain. Good luck! |

...I find this to be a really fascinating question because I have absolutely nothing against the scale. It's just a piece of machinery that reports facts. I have something against myself for letting my body get to the point where I dread the scale. |

I agree that he likely intended it as a compliment. Some of my guy friends have commented on my weight loss in a way that is really poorly worded, but I know that they think they're complimenting me. I just try to take it in the spirit they meant and thank them anyway. |

Age is never an excuse, and this is coming from a 17-year-old. Of course I say stupid things without thinking about them, but getting called on it now will help me not say similar things in the future. I've heard the other end of the spectrum just as much, because my grandparents grew up without this 'politically correct' mantra. I can't expect them to change, but I do expect them to understand that my world is entirely different. Frankly, I won't allow my friends to meet them because they frequently make extremely rude comments about their skin color or hijab. |

Am I really the only girl who uses the word rhyming with punt? Side effect of growing up with boys, I suppose. For guys, it rhymes with sock if they're using it & it rhymes with tick if they're being one. |

| The Lounge | What age for sex, emotions, relations education! | Oct 26 2008 23:53 (UTC) |

It's absolutely necessary in schools, and I agree that it should begin when they're young. Of course they don't need explicit details in first grade, but being able to understand what's appropriate and what's not is essential. If every kid learned this at school and knew they had a teacher/counselor/nurse who would listen, I really believe that sexual abuse would go down at least a little. It's extremely difficult to realize why the abuse is wrong when you don't fully understand it and don't have anyone you trust. Personally, I had no form of sex education at home - it was just one of those things you never talked about, and now I have a difficult time forgiving them for that. My male friends filled me in when we were young, but of course that isn't the case for everyone. |

I'm in the same sort of situation - my family eats very unhealthily. What helps me is that I always offer to do the grocery shopping on the way home from school, which cuts out the excess junk. Since it's nearly Halloween, I've been surrounded by sugar, especially at school. I bought a small bag of trick-or-treat-sized candy and I keep it in my room. If I'm still REALLY craving sugar at the end of the day, I can have a piece. This helps me avoid ice cream or cake or whatever dessert my family's having, because I know I can satisfy the craving with far fewer calories. Also, to echo cindolin - eating fruit really helps my sugar cravings! After substituting fruit for candy all the time, I've come to associate green apples with dessert, so they're like a treat now. :) |

I'm currently in Virginia, right outside DC - our summers are miserably hot and the winters are freezing cold. I grew up in Idaho, so I'm perfectly accustomed to the cold and I melt in the heat, but if weather's a big factor that I wouldn't recommend out here. |

I'm the same way - I can easily restrict myself at the table, but it's impossible for me to cook without tasting everything. When I'm preparing a large meal like that, I'll cut up vegetables before I start anything else and keep a bowl of them nearby. Having something else to eat while cooking mashed potatoes or something really helps! |

I'm not in college yet, but all my friends are teenage boys - they regularly order massive amounts of pizza, Chinese, or Mexican for everyone. I don't see it as annoying so much as them just not understanding - they can eat all of that and lose weight, so they figure that it won't really hurt me. I definitely second the gum suggestion - I do this all the time, because it keeps your mouth busy. Also drink extra water, because it'll help you feel full and remind you that you really don't need the junk food. In my situation, I know they're not trying to tempt me - they honestly think that I shouldn't worry and ought to just enjoy it because it isn't a big deal. Chances are that these girls aren't intentionally trying to sabotage you, they just don't understand how serious you are. |

Honestly, I see this the same way as I see a boyfriend telling his girlfriend she needs to lose weight - either way, he's not being supportive. It's your body, and if you feel that what you're doing is right, then do it regardless. If he loves your body more than you, then you really might want to think about the relationship. |

| Young Calorie Counters | What does your cafeteria serve? Yikes! | Oct 02 2008 04:42 (UTC) |

My high school cafeteria has very few options, all of them soaked in grease - I usually end up having a banana, then eating decent food when I get home. I stayed at colleges for several weeks last summer, though, and the food there was incredible! The salad bar alone would have made me happy for an entire year, what with so much variety. Even the hot food had nutritional information posted, and it really wasn't bad at all. |

All my friends are teenage boys with insane metabolisms - they eat complete crap all the time. They're all pretty athletic, so they do burn a decent number of calories, but I'll never understand how they end up maintaining by eating five times as much junk food as I do healthy food. On one hand, it sucks to be tempted when they order pizza & Chinese & Chipotle... but on the other, just watching the sheer amount of food they consume is enough of a deterrant. I'm constantly wondering how they can manage to fit it all! |

I agree that watching movies & recording yourself will be the most helpful. Singing along to songs by American artists might help as long as the lyrics are clearly enunciated - your instinct will be to mimic the singer. |

I've always loved cooking, so if I opened a restaurant, the menu would be a mix of different cuisines. It'd probably be based on my Italian side, though - Icelandic foods tend to be acquired tastes! I always find that restaurant food is too salty; I'm a firm believer in not adding salt when I'm cooking, because you can always add a little at the table if you really want to. The portions wouldn't be so ridiculously American-sized, either, because I usually can't finish a full entree at most places. |

To repeat PG - I don't give my Muslim friends traditional gifts because they receive those from their families. I plan to make several of their favorite desserts, things that I'm 'known' for in our circle and that they can't/don't often make themselves. The food will be absolutely delicious - I really recommend trying a little of everything! |
