| Weight Loss | college grads! | Aug 16 2007 01:26 (UTC) |

| Like picchick, I gained the weight only during my last year at college. Before that I used to job 5-10 miles a day, but when my senior project came along, it wrecked my health. Not only did I stop exercising, but I slept for 3-4 hours each day for two semesters straight, and to this day suffer from bouts of insomnia. Before I used to sleep for 10-12 hours! Anyways, I graduated in December, gained a little weight going through the motions of "becoming an adult". However I got back on track a month ago and since I've dropped 2 to 4 pant sizes (sizes vary in fit), and am on my way to healthy weight, slowly and surely. Personally, I think the biggest key to my success is will, determination, and attitude. Trying to jazz up recipes or lie to myself that carrots taste good never worked out. What did work was being honest that the journey is hard, but that the reward is worth it. Self discipline applies to all parts of your life (such as your job), and making a serious effort at improving your self discipline will not only improve your weight, but every aspect of your life. |

| Holy moly, you're in Romania? I'm Romanian! Isn't Bucharest awesome? Go to the Transylvanian mountains in Sinai, you'll love it. Best of all, go to Calarasi, my hometown, beautiful city. Anyways, as for weight loss, don't compare yourself to Romanian girls, because the Bucharest ones are trying to compare themselves to American images. Trust me, last time I went there (3 yrs ago), all the young people are obsessed with American culture and fashion, which is distorted through glam teevee and magazines. And if you're gaining weight, it's the Romanian food. I try not to go home to my parents that much cuz Romo food is ridiculously unhealthy. In Transylvania they eat bricks of lard, no kidding, they call it "slaina". Just relax, it'll be okay. Plenty of excercise oppurtunities there. | |||

| The vast majority of my wardrobe involves sweats or hoodies. One of the great thing about college is that such outfits are "decent" public outfits now that most people go to class in PJ's and terricloth tracksuits.

| Well, if you're eating that late due to hunger, you need to eat more during lunch and breakfast. Breakfast is key. Also, I've noticed getting a good amount of sleep affects your weight loss too. 2 hours more than you usually do can have massive effects on your metabolism, I found from experience. Since you're starting out, most healthy food will probly taste terrible compared to all the "good stuff". Just stick to it and your tastes will change. When I started I hated fruit, now I can't start a day without peaches or pears. Stick to it coach and you'll get there. And remember, it took awhile to pack it on, so it'll be a while to get it off. Good luck.

| I know what you're talking about. If you eat dorm food, then you know most of it is deep fried grease. There are usually "healthy" foods offered but they might not taste so good. At my college they do make good deli food at one caf but the rest is oil. If you don't stay in the dorms then buy groceries, avoid eating out. Get healthy stuff from your Jewel. The fruits they sell are much better than those served in a caf.
I tried excercise for many years but got no results because I didn't watch my diet. You have to remember it takes an hour of jogging to work off two pizza slices. So never eat after 7pm, always always ALWAYS eat breakfast (cereal w/ canned fruit is my choice), and get sleep so you have energy and motivation. Just yesterday I came off 4 hour sleep from staying up writing a paper. I blew off running because of how tired I was. So yeah, college is hectic, but it's possible to be healthy. Stay motivated |

| Mushrooms are good ones. They are ridiculously low in calories, even the canned ones. Add a little spice to them and you have a filling meal under 100 cals. Mushrooms don't have much taste on their own, but a spice will make it pizaz. Fennel or wasabi or whatever you like, the majority of the cals will come from the spice! A big mushroom raw has only 5 cals, while a jar of preserved mushrooms has only 40 cals, which is more than filling. | |||

| Yeah, like the others say, fasting is for detox only. You cannot permanently lose weight by fasting unless you do it for months. After two days or so of fasting, your metabolism will shut down and everything you eat is turned to fat. It's basically hibernation in humans. You don't need to buy any special juices, anything natural will work. Again, I stress that you should do that to clean your colon, not lose weight. And if you do it, you have to eat really really healthy the day after or else its fat. If fasting is not up your alley an enema works even better, but some people don't wanna try that. | |||

| A pure fast, or a juice fast (taking in only liquids) do the same thing. Stop eating solids for two days and it cleans you out. I did it at the start of my diet. It does clean you out. I don't want to get too graphic, but your bathroom visits will be "better", assuming you stick to a healthy diet after fasting. Just by not eating you're giving your intestine rest so it can use all its energy on emptying out the old stuff. But be careful, because not eating reduces you're metabolism. | |||

| on the issue of working up a sweat, i'll make a comment. when i jog on the track, i dont begin to sweat til about halfway into the run, but i do get results at the end of the day. when i used brutal stairmasters, i would be drenched within 10 minutes but didnt lose a single pound (but I didn't count calories back then either). | |||

| You can't just make sure the burn number is higher than the cal number. You have to watch the metabolism, meaning, you eat your so-many cals evenly through out the day, and don't eat after 7pm. Otherwise your metabolism will be low and you're not really burning as many cals as you think. Also, for lots of activity, like 4 hour hikes, you might need more cals to keep up. If youre feeling weak after a work out youre not eating enough. You should feel tired not weak. A final note is that you may have gained muscle, not fat. Keep at it and see how you fair after a month. | |||
