| Foods | French Press Coffee Calories? | Nov 24 2009 05:40 (UTC) |

It goes back to Cafestol and Kahweol present in unfiltered coffee. Different types of beans contain different levels. Again, unless you're drinking it by the gallons, don't worry about it unless you have high cholesterol or a family history of it. If you're drinking coffee for the flavor, stick to a few cups a day of the french pressed stuff but if you're drinking it just for the caffeine, standard drip brew with the paper filter.. The other side of this, of course, is that coffee has some really good anti-cancer properties. All in moderation. |

Original Post by floggingsully: Roasted coffee beans do have a little bit of natural oil. Paper coffee filters soak up most of it but a french press pot (plunger pot, etc) is straight coarsely ground beans, covered with boiled water then the plunger part smooshes them down to the bottom so you pour just the coffee. No filtering beyond the mesh screen that holds the grounds down. Now this got me thinking, a lot people recommend replacing paper filters for traditional drip machines with gold mesh filters for better flavor. Now it makes sense why... |

Google really is full of fail on that subject. Only things I've been able to dig up is information on Cafestol and Kahweol, which have the potential to very slightly raise cholesterol levels. As far as calorie count, I don't. The brewing method (filterless) is close enough to espresso, which is 1 calorie per fluid ounce although often listed as 5 calories with maybe 1g carbohydrates, under half a gram of protein, and no measurable amount of fat. So, unless you drink an awful lot of it per day, I wouldn't worry about it. Since the coffee from the french press isn't normally espresso strength (mine might be close though), you're looking at maybe 5-10 calories per cup, max. It's really difficult to go back to filtered coffee. |

| Weight Loss | if i lose 80lb will i end up with saggy skin???? | Nov 14 2009 11:41 (UTC) |

1) Don't let the thought of possible saggy skin keep you from reaching your goal 2) Take it slow. You don't need to drop it all at once. Even half a pound a week is still something and it will add up over time. I've dropped around 75lb so far and only average about 5lb a month but the skin has been able to keep up. |

Yes!! @ Basshunter/DotA Hmm, not a runner but I do go for long walks, so good enough I think. Currently listening to In Strict Confidence, Rammstein, Front Line Assembly, Juno Reactor, Wumpscut, and a whole host of others. It doesn't matter if the lyrics aren't in English, I try to sing along anyway. It's a curse.

| Fitness | Can I do New Rules of Lifting for Women at home? | Nov 08 2009 13:01 (UTC) |

575sq foot apartment here so a small space should not limit you. Your biggest space hog would probably be the ball but it can be used as a chair too. Barbell/Dumbbell set came from Sports Authority, $80 plus maybe another $20 for the additional plates. Pullup bar was $30. Swiss Ball is easily under $15. Jump Rope, under $10. Ankle/Wrist weights can also be used on the barbell to add small increments at a time, around $15-$20 on those. I like the one with the little tube shaped weights you can add/remove as needed. If you have access to a used sport equipment store, that would work nicely. |

Did it all at home also. Purchases: Adjustable Barbell/Dumbbell set with 80lbs worth of plates - had to purchase additional plates later on, more for convenience. Pull up Bar - over the door frame style (Iron Gym) Other Stuff: Swiss ball I already had, for a step, I used a storage ottoman cube or step stool. Two of the cubes sorta worked in place of a bench (or the swiss ball can be used) and for a squat rack, I used two identical scratching posts. Bare minimum, I'd say a Swiss Ball and adjustable dumbbells with a good selection of weight plates. |

| Recipes | Struggling with Recipe Analyzer | Oct 26 2009 10:13 (UTC) |

I've found with the recipe analyzer, it's easiest to put most things in by weight and further tweek it by using specific item numbers instead of allowing the analyzer to try to figure out what you meant. First, the analyzer doesn't know if you want canned or raw beans. it assumes raw and that's where the extra calories are coming from. Usually best to specify an item number instead. Since Goya isn't in the database, go with the next closest,16029, (Beans, Kidney, All Types, Mature Seeds, Canned). You would end up entering something like this: 11oz [99971] Now, I couldn't find exact matches for a few things, and that happens quite a bit, so you'll need to find whichever item is in the database that closely matches which may throw off the calorie a little bit. I had a heck of time finding Italian Dressing that was that high calories. When you first analyze a recipe, click each view link below the nutritional chart to make sure it matches what you want. |

Once I switched to using the French Press, I can't drink plain drip brewed coffee. It's gotta be strong, black or with 2 ounces of milk (yup, I measure it) |

I wouldn't worry too much about keeping the fat % low as long as your fat is coming from good sources and it'll keep you fuller, longer. However, it also depends on how your body reacts to fats and sugars. |

I like the sesame bread myself. Keep it in the freezer and toast a slice every morning to have with peanut butter. I let it get pretty toasty too, otherwise I don't like the texture and well toasted gives it a nice toasty smell and taste. As far as the tortillas, they are great as long as you don't plan to use them where you would use a normal tortilla. |

Set schedule here too, 5 times a week (usually). Saturday/Monday/Wednesday - Weights Sunday/Tuesday or Friday - Long walks Thursdays are my off day. I work nights and weekends so keeping track of what day it actually is can be a bit of challenge sometimes. Not having a set schedule would probably cause me to skip it all entirely. |

Earl Greater Grey from Zhena's Gypsy Tea. I pretty much buy it in bulk. I've tried a ton of Earl Grey varieties, ranging from bland (Bigelow) to a "lovely" odor and taste of rotting oranges (Stash - maybe a bad batch, but I'm not trying it again). Tazo comes in second. I'm still in search of the perfect green. Tazo, again, has a pretty decent one if you can find the plain old green, waiting on Zhena's to restock theirs. |

| Foods | steel cut oats in a rice cooker? | May 16 2009 07:08 (UTC) |

steel cut oats is a 1:3 ration of oats to water. stove top or rice cooker. If your rice cooker has a brown rice setting, use that. 1 cup oats, 3 cups water, close, cook. I normally add a cup of milk once they're done and let the cooker sit on warm for another 10 minutes. Divide into individual portions and store them in the fridge, I wouldn't go over 5 days. 1 cup of dry oats makes 4 150 calorie portions (without the milk) |

| Weight Loss | Grocery List | Apr 30 2009 08:43 (UTC) |
1 |
Rule #1: Never shop hungry I completely understand the need for a list and having a better way to make one. As to the list making, here's what I do. Every Wednesday morning, I check the sales for my grocery store, see what's on sale, check my cookbooks, see if anything looks good, ask the tummy "hey, how about...?" and open up a spreadsheet app. Here, I've started a list of items I need to buy in one column, next column has it's location in the grocery store, next column gets a 1 if I need to pick it up that week, last column is optional if I need a specific amount. When not in use, I keep the list sorted by the second column so I can easily find milk under the dairy location and mark it. So, it'll take you a while to build a good list, but come grocery day, sort by the need column, then by the location and you've got yourself a list arranged by location ready to print which will get you through the store faster and avoid those unplanned items. Biggest thing is you do have to plan, otherwise you end up with half meals, a pantry full of stuff you can't do anything with and end up ordering a pizza. I would expand that 10-15 minutes of planning to a minimum of 30, easily an hour for starters. A whiteboard in the kitchen can be a great help. Plan out what you want for breakfast, with a few options if you don't like the same thing every day, another column for snacks, another for lunch and dinner. Treat it like a diner menu, why not? Worry about what you want to eat, if the boyfriend doesn't like the week's menu, he can go forage for his own food, or you both can plan out the week together with extra fruits/veggies for you, and extra whatever he will eat. |

| Weight Loss | I've net a 4000 calorie deficit for the week: So when do I lose my pound of fat? | Apr 05 2009 17:01 (UTC) |
12 |
If only the actual loss matched the math, sadly, it's nowhere near perfect. Since I started keeping track of my daily deficits, the math says I should have lost 7 pounds but I've only dropped 4. There, obviously, won't be an overnight drop from the prior day's deficit, but at the end of the week, something should show up. There will be weeks when the loss is higher than deficit and others, there will be none or even a gain. One week, I lost 3 pounds, next week gained one, then went down nearly 6 the week following (that one was a shock, yup, I double checked) then back up another two the week after that. Wish I had been tracking the deficit numbers during that period to find out what happened. Hey, as long as it's going down, I'm not going to complain (much). |

Biochem Natural 80 Calories/20g Protein/1g Carbohydrates per scoop It's unsweetened with just a hint of vanilla. Normally blend it up with a cup of milk (works well with water/coffee/soy milk/almond milk too) and half a cup of blueberries. No nasty aftertaste with this one. (finally) I went through quite a few before I found the Biochem. Any products that used artifical sweeteners were automatically excluded and all the ones I tried that were sweetened with Stevia were much too sweet. (why is it that everything must be overly sweet?) Some also had dissolving issues. As far as the Stevia sweetened products, Designer Whey Vanilla was tollerable if hit with a good shot of cinnamon but had an odd aftertaste and the Chocolate was too milk chocolate for my tastes and too sweet. Would have preferred a nice bitter dark chocolate. |

| Weight Loss | Plateau | Mar 28 2009 14:45 (UTC) |

I've been stuck myself all this month. My last weigh in of the month (I do it every Saturday morning) is exactly the same as it was at the beginning of the month. In between, I've gone up 1.5lb and hopefully, finally, I hope it's starting to go back down. Will know for sure next Saturday. Same as you, I've been eating all the right things, exercising, adding additional exercise, have maintained a deficit, and nothing. I decided to play around with my calorie intake; under 1600 one week - had a .5 pound gain that week. The following week, I averaged just under 2000 - 1/4 pound loss. This past week, I averaged just under 1800 and finally ended up where I started the month. One pound difference throughout the month is a plateau, especially since I've been seeing a 6lb+ per month prior. In another post somewhere, someone posted a link to calorie zig-zag calculator. I used its suggestion this past week and will do so for another few weeks and see what happens. Lowering calories under 1600 seems to have stopped working for me, so I'm curious as to what a slight increase does. |

| Weight Gain | Meal ideas when all you have is a Microwave | Mar 25 2009 10:45 (UTC) |

How do you feel about eggs? Poached Eggs: 1 egg (no shell, of course) 1 cup add water to cover, 1/4-1/2 cup Depending on the microwave and the temperture of the water, each egg takes about 40 seconds. It will take a few tries to find the right cooking time, but eggs are cheap, just don't over cook, they will 'sploid. There was also a post here some time ago about making scrambled eggs in the microwave, I'll try to track that down. -> here it is
Another favorite is fish and veggie packets: Get yourself some parchment paper (or lots, this is a great technique) Look into this Good Eats transcript for the pouch episode for other ideas - there's one with shrimp and ramen noodles :-D Slice up a zucchini, about 1/4 inch thick slices Use a large peice of parchment, about 2 feet or so, place the veggies on one half, drizzle with good olive oil, a touch of toasted sesame oil and sprinkle with salt and any other seasoning you like. On top of the pile of veggies, place a salmon fillet, a little more olive oil, sesame oil, seasoning. Fold over the other half, and fold/crimp the edges to make a tight seal all around (making a huge paper dumpling of sorts). I usually tuck the "tail" you end up with under. Place on a plate (sometimes a little of the juices escape) and nuke for 3-4 minutes, again, depends on your microwave and how much you like your fish cooked. This can be done with all sorts of combinations. Some meats are better suited for steaming than others. Fish works extremely well, chicken breasts would work well also. What sort of foods are you eating now and what do you like to eat? That might help with more ideas.
Edit: added link to microwave scrambled egg |
