Weight Loss does anyone else get made fun of for eating healthy? Mar 18 2009

It happens to me every single day. My 'blessed' friends are all thin and can pretty much shove any junk inside their ouths and still not gain weight. What infuriates me still is that they complain about being fat in front of my face, even if I'm just sitting there quietly.

But the biggest thing that pisses me off is when they actually see me eat during my cheat/ reward day. They kept on pointing out that I was eating too much. Honestly, after trying to lose weight for 2 years without any constant support from the people around me, I definitely do not need anyone to remind me what kind/ how much food I ate. I can even brag about how much self control I have now, seeing as the only junk I eat in a day is a nibble of dark chocolate and a few small pieces of bread rolls. Heck, all the healthy food I eat in a day, they couldn't eat in a week, seeing as whatever they eat is filled with junk and fast food.

I'm just venting out all this pent up frustration for trying to be healthy and all. It's just hard to come by someone who does the same, especially in my community. Thank God for CC! :p

Weight Loss have you hit plateau? Mar 16 2009

I just broke my 4 month long plateau a few days ago. :p For 3 weeks, I increased my calories, changed the intensity of exercise workouts (from vigorous to a bit relaxed) and added more rest days. I finally lost a pound after that! I'm off to a slow start, but at least the scale moved downward for the first time in 4 months!

Wow! Since when did you start increasing your calories? And how fast did you exactly lose the weight while increasing? A pound a week? I feel so motivated now. I almost have the same stats as you are (currently 137-139 (haven't weighed myself properly yet), 5'3 and 18 yrs old). I've recently increased my calories too, from 1500 to 1800 on low days and the occasional high day, from 1900 to 2200.

Do you exercise too? If so, how often? I'm sorry if I ask so many questions. It's just that I've been at an agonizing plateau for 4 months now, and reading this topic made me feel relieved that somehow I am doing something right. :)

Thank you so much for posting your experience! And congratulations!

We almost have the same stats (I'm 18, 5'3 and weigh 137-139 lbs). I've been stuck at this weight for 4 months now, despite being active (6 days a week of exercise, at least 45 mins each day) and watching my calories (recently upped my calories from 1500-1800 on normal days and from 1900-2200 on high days). So yeah, it really is frustrating.

As for the recent increase though, I gained a bit of weight lol. But I'm still giving it a week or two. Don't give up, and let us know what happens!

I'm not really sure, but as for my diet, I usually eat oats, wheat bread, fish, bananas, some veggies like swamp cabbage, brocolli, cauliflower and green beans, peanut butter etc. I do eat at least an hour before cardio. I eat 5 meals a day actually.

I just hate it when you suddenly feel sick when you least expect it, especially after exercising. I've always loved the feeling after getting a good sweat out of it, and now this.

Thank you for the reply though! :)

Weight Loss Carbohydrates, Good or Bad? Mar 02 2009

You shouldn't cut out all carbs from your diet since these are like premium fuel for your body. Your carb choices are quite acceptable but you need complex carbohydrates to really fuel your body.

Fruits are simple carbohydrates and are easily absorbed by the body while vegetables are fibrous carbohydrates. Fibrous carbs don't provide you enough calories to fuel your body, seeing as a cup of veggies only provides around 30-40 calories.

Complex carbohydrates are eaten because they are harder to absorb, therefore providing you a steady flow of energy. These carbohydrates come from starchy foods, like pasta, bread, rice, potatoes etc. They should never be cut out from your diet simply because you need these to function properly.

Still, everything comes down to calorie count and proper food choices. Excess calories are stored as fat, therefore causing weight gain. Proper food choices include eating baked potatoes instead of a potato chip. The more processed the food becomes, the unhealthier it gets.

It's been a week now. To summarize, I've increased my calories to 2100-2200 for the first 3 days of the week, then decreased it a little to 1800 for 3 days, and yesterday, another high day, so that's about 2000-2100. My past calorie intake was 1500 for low days and 1900 for high days.

I maintained my exercise routine of 6 times a week, 40-50 mins per day of moderate-intense cardio and added another day of strength training, so it's now 3 times a week of strength training.

I weighed myself again and the scale showed around 137lbs. I didn't gain but I didn't lose either. But my body fat percentage increased to 29% (last week it was 28%). I dunno if it's because of the water weight or maybe it's because I had a high day yesterday (I checked my BF% this morning), but it's still quite frustrating to see an increase like that. I might disregard the measurement though, and check again after a few days just to be sure.

I would also just like to ask if I still need to change my calorie intake. Do I need to increase it further or should I revert to my old routine? How about my exercise routines? Am I pushing myself too hard or should I maintain it?

Thank you so much for the replies!

EDIT: I've updated my profile a bit, and and my burn meter showed 2210 as my calorie expenditure (activity type is sedentary and I input my exercise info separately instead). Is 1800 enough for a low calorie day or should I increase it a bit more? Today's not exactly a typical day for movement because I don't have classes today, so I bet my expenditures will increase when I do go to school. I know I'm pretty anal retentive about my data, but I just wanted to make sure if I'm doing things right asap. :p

Weight Loss To those who have or are upping calories... Mar 02 2009

I've recently increased my calorie intake (around a week ago actually), consuming around 2000-2100 cal on high days (which I did for 4 days) and around 1800-1900 cal on low days (this one I did for 3 days). I did 3 days of high cal, 3 days of low, and yesterday another high day.My past calorie intake was like 1500-1600 on low days and 1900-2000 for high days.

I'm 18 and 5'3. I currently weigh around 137 lbs. Last week I weighed the same. I do intense cardio(usually jogging/running/biking) 6 times a week, around 35-50 mins each day. I do strength training 2x a week, but last week I increased it to 3x a week.

My question now is this: how long should I wait before I see any changes? I know it's only been a week of upping my calories but I just want to ask how long before any of you got any results? A week? 10 days? 2 weeks?

I'm just frustrated because I've been stuck on this weight for 3-4 months now. I'm not gaining or losing anything. I know I should be a little happy because I didn't gain at all when I increased my calorie intake, but I'm not seeing any results. Should I wait it out or should I revert back to my old routine?

@samiaz

Oh wow! I have a twin! :D I was in the exact situation around 2 months ago. I was stuck at 138 for 3 months. It moved a little towards 137 when I started to change my strength training program and become meticulous with my exercises. But after that, nothing.

@specca

I do weight training 2 times a week. I wouldn't have enough time to add another day of strength training because it takes me so long to finish my sets.

After a day of stuffing myself, I actually feel fine. Not that bloated but I guess the water weight will come after a few days. I'm getting scared lmao.

I feel the same actually. I've never been this afraid of eating before lol. I ate a lot today even when I'm not that hungry just to get my calories up. It's depressing to think that your body doesn't appreciate being fed properly. But I'll just see what happens. I'll let you guys know what the effects are after a few days. I just hope that it'll be for the better.

I see then. But don't you think 2500-2700 is a bit much for maintaining? Online calculators say that I need around a maximum of 2300 calories to maintain, even if I exercise around 5-6 times a week. I dunno, I guess I'm just a bit scared to increase my calories. XD I'll try to raise it by increments and see what happens.

Oh, when I woke up this morning and ate breakfast, I didn't feel hungry at all, despite having dieted for 3 days (today's my high day). It's as if I was just shoving food down my throat without the pleasure of satisfying my appetite. Is this a sign of being in starvation mode?

@leahhh

Strangely, I feel quite relieved to know that someone is in the same situation as mine hahah. I really get jealous and frustrated when I see people lose weight easily. I've only lost around 15-20 pounds for the last 2 and a half years. I'm not obese when I started but still, 2 years and a half of misery takes a lot out of me. XD

I'll let everyone know what happens when I try to increase my calories this week. :) Thanks again for the replies! I appreciate them fully! :)

Oh. I forgot, I'm 18 btw. :)

For a month now, the only lean protein I've been eating would be grilled/ steamed fish. I may have a few nibbles of pork and beef, but that's just it. Also, I drink lots of water. I'd prolly consume about 3-4 liters of water daily? Also, I don't drink sweet stuffs. No soda or juice, just water. I tend to eat a few pieces of sweets every now and then, like pinches of chocolate, but that's just about it.

2 weeks ago, I stopped working out for a few days, but at that time I didn't get much sleep/ eat properly (I skipped a meal or 2 on that week) because I was too stressed out, so I guess that doesn't count as a rest week, does it? I got back on track the week after, which is last week. (Lol, sorry for my confusing sentences. :p)

I guess I might try increasing my calorie intake for a few days and see what happens. I'm scared of gaining a few pounds though, my metabolism just hates me.

Thank you so much for replying! :3

kokobunn- I love kashi.  I really do.  They have a full line of products that have lots of fiber and protein in them.  I don't know where your calorie-allotment is, but I would recommend their cereal, bars, cookies, crackers, etc.

Other ideas for protein-ish: chicken-salad (use miracle whip) with kashi crackers. yummy.

egg beaters

light yogurt (usually around 9 grams of protein and 16 of carbs)

whole grain everything! It fills you up more, definitely.

ps- I'm still 167.0! that might be my official weigh in because I will be gone until Tuesday?

I dunno if we have Kashi here since I don't live in the US. XD But I'll try to look for alternatives though! Thanks so much! And congratulations on your first weigh in! You definitely deserve it! :D

I have a question though, about calorie counting. I read here that women need a minimum of 1200 calories in order to lose weight right? Does that include exercise? I mean,  should the food we eat PLUS exercise be equal to 1200 by the end of the day? Or does the minimum of 1200 concern only our calorie intake without exercise? I'm sorry if the questions confuse you. XD

Okay, so I'm kind of worried about my eating habits. I feel like I eat too much during the day, but when the day ends, I still feel hungry. I also feel like I eat too much carbs and fats compared to protein. Anyone know foods, preferably snacks, that are high in protein?

Oh well.. I'll have to start all over again tomorrow. I just hope that by the 1st weigh-in the damned scale would budge, even just a little. Wish me luck! D:

kokobunn- I hope that I misinterpretted, but just because you have more calories to spend, doesn't mean you should spend them on sweets?  Especially if you are reaching a platue, make sure you are eating whole grains, fruits, veggies, lean meats, etc.

So, I was really worried that I wouldn't make my 1.75 pound goal this week, because a) its practice week and b) I have a slightly rough/fun/unhealthy weekend (my friend's parents were in town, and it was always "why don't you come out to dinner/breakfast/ice cream with us? our treat!" and of course, free food and great company, who can say no?).

Lastly, that's how much it takes to reach 30 pounds by December 25th! 1.75 pounds per week.... so intimidating.  But I figure, even if I only lose 1 pound per week, I'll still be 17 pounds lighter. Anyway, its not official weigh in day, but I went from 169.5 --> 167! (I know... its all ttom weight and the fact that my swim practice was twice as hard yesterday. but its still encouraging!)

Oh no, not really. It was just for a day or two. Kind of a cheat day I think? I don't really eat too much sweets such as candy bars everyday. Was just saying that I expected to gain a bit of weight from those 2 cheat days. :D Also, are the foods I eat okay for losing weight? I think I kind of eat too much carbohydrates for a day. I try to limit my sweets though, and eat as much vegetables and fruits as I can. >.<;

And wow! Great job for losing the weight! 2.5 lbs is already a superb start! ^^

Hello! I would also like to join your group since I really need to blast these pounds away for good. I have been on an agonizing plateau for such a long time (4-5 months actually) and I really need to start losing some more before Christmas. :)

I'm an 18 year old college student. I lost the first 15 pounds of my weight when I was around 16-17. And now the scale won't budge at all. I couldn't even get it below 140.

Current Weight: 141 lbs

Height: 5'3''

Goal Weight: 111-115lbs

I'm having a hard time deciphering why the scale just won't budge. I believe that I have been eating healthily for the past 6-7 months. I avoid eating rice (rice is a staple here in the Philippines), sodas, fried foods and fast foods and I eat a variety of vegetables and fruits too. I also eat a lot of whole wheat products such as bread and cereals and low fat versions of possibly anything I could find.

I work out around 3-5 times a week. Cardio 3-5 times and weight training for at most 3 times. I have been doing this for at least 4-5 months.

I would really like some advice and motivation because I am obviously at the brink of becoming totally depressed by my weight issues. Being with people who have the same problem as mine is very inspiring. Thank you so much and have a nice day! ^^

I can hear your frustration.  I haven't hit any plateaus yet, but I try to always do things differently each day.  What I mean is I change my exercise routine and I zig-zag my calories.  On the days I have an intense exercise routine, I eat more that day.  The same goes on days I don't exercise or have a light day of exercise, then I eat less.  Check out this website for a suggested zig-zag calorie intake. http://www.freedieting.com/tools/calorie_calc ulator.htm

The other thing I do is I measure or weigh what goes in my mouth.  I found guessing never worked for me, I was always way off. When you measure dry ingredients make sure you're not adding more, stay below the rim of the measuring cup.  I recently saw a Yahoo video (wish I had the link) that showed how many more calories you would consume if you kept padding your measurements.  This video was astounding!  We think we a ok with our calories, but if you "fudge" every time, those calories add up to a lot of extra calories.

I've read on CC that when you hit a plateau, eat more.  Up your calories.  Now don't freak out, it's only for a day or two, then go back to zig-zagging.  This should give your metabolism a kick. You are doing things right with your diet.  Hang in there.

Thank you so much for the info! It'll definitely help a lot! :D

I started a food journal too last night, and well, so far so good I guess. I also tried eating a bit more than usual and it seems that it does work a little. Surprisingly, I didn't gain too much considering the extra amount of sweets I shoved down. xD I'll check the results by the end of the week. I'll keep my fingers crossed till then! Thanks again! :D
