Weight Loss Addiction or not?? Do you do this too? Help! Sep 14 2009

I wouldn't call it an addiction? But I read somewhere that people who fidget tend to be slimmer than people who simply stand/sit there like a lump.

Young Calorie Counters Anyone anoyed at the super metabolism girls? Sep 13 2009

Look at it this way - since your metabolism isn't so high, you'll learn moderation early and integrate it into your lifestyle now. So when those girls are 25-30, and their fast metabolism goes away, they'll either have to learn quick how to moderate, or gain all the weight that they didn't when they were young. And you will be slender and happy.

Or who knows? Maybe she's very active, goes to the gym and does lots of physical things that afford her such treats?

Weight Loss SOO confuced! should I exercise or not??? Sep 13 2009

At first you may see a slight muscle gain and a slight retention of water weight (which will go back down once you've gotten into the habit of working out). You need to be more worried about your body's shape than the number on the scale. Because working out will help you lose fat, and you may gain slight muscle, which may make the scale stay near to the same for a while. Don't get discouraged! Some things to remember:

1. If you're looking to lose fat, its not just the number on the scale that counts! Look at how your clothes are fitting to determine if you've lost fat or not.

2. You can't gain a significant amount of muscle unless you're eating a calorie surplus.

3. When you weigh yourself every day, you may see changes up to 2lbs up or down, just because of the possibility of water weight fluctuating. Try weighing yourself once a week and just using that number.

4. You ARE within a healthy weight range. So I'd be far less concerned about the number itself, and more concerned about how your clothes fit and how you feel.

Weight Loss Can you really lose weight with Nutrisystem? Sep 13 2009
14:52 (UTC)

Short answer - Yes, you can lose weight on nutrasystem or NuLean or any program you do, so long as there's a healthy calorie defecit.

Nulean doesn't look like a Nutrisystem-style meal replacement to me anyway? Because I went on the website you linked to and it looks like a colon cleanser to me, that you replace one meal a day with. Please look up the negative effects of colon cleansing before making a decision like that. (For example, for the first few weeks after a cleanse, you have to eat only specific foods to replenish the good bacteria in your colon. NO cheating, as the cleanse has stripped your system of its ability to deal with treats.)

This Nulean stuff looks like just another diet pill (even in shake form). You won't sustain long-term weight loss with a pill/shake with diet pill ingredients unless you plan to keep taking it forever. Try a healthy, natural diet with a 500-calorie defecit and your results may be slower, but they'll work. Without any possible side effects!

Weight Loss What made YOU realize you HAD to lose weight? Sep 13 2009

I was more stubborn than most people. I got T2 diabetes, was told that I needed  to lose weight, and that's when I finally was able to commit to it. Good news is, if you catch T2 early enough and take the necessary steps to lose weight and eat better, its like not having it at all! So I think it actually saved my life.

Vegetarian Why is vegetarian healthier? Sep 12 2009
17:39 (UTC)

Vegetarian is only healthier if you make smart vegetarian food choices. And I think it helps that vegetarians can't eat a whole lot of fast food (Going to your local Goodburger will pretty much only get you a choice of a Goodburger, Goodchickenburger, or fries fried in Goodburger drippings - none of which a vegetarian would eat).

Fitness What was your work out for the day? How did it go? Sep 12 2009

The past few days, my only workout has been going to work! Physical job, 8 hr shifts with only two 15 minute breaks scattered within, no lunch breaks... as it was, I had to eat a 750 calorie pizza and a piece of fudge when I got home just to make it up to my calorie range!

I don't see a whole lot of men on the boards, but I can assure you that you're most definitely not the only man calorie counting. Don't feel alone! I know it can be nice to have support from your own gender, but us chicks aren't so bad either. Congratulations on your loss!

Vegetarian Raw Vegans- anyone? Sep 12 2009
16:44 (UTC)
1

I've heard of more failures on a raw diet than successes. Part raw is definitely healthy, but when you get into only raw and are cutting out all grains and many fats, you're restricting your body of many nutrients it needs. And its harder in a raw diet to eat as many calories as you need to maintain a healthy, non-ED style diet.

Weight Loss Are you becoming less accepting of "I can't do it" comments from other overweight people? Sep 12 2009
00:28 (UTC)

I can't really be annoyed by it, because it really is one of those things where if you're not ready to do it, then nothing could convince you. When I see those people, its kind of sad. But its more than rewarding when you find people who ask, listen, do something about it, and actually lose weight! Some people need to be told that it IS that easy if you go about it the right way. And its incredibly awesome to see their results and know you had a part in it.

Foods How do i make my quick oats taste better? Sep 12 2009
00:22 (UTC)

I like adding fruit or cocoa powder. Try going to your grocery store and looking at the oatmeal display - any flavor they have is probably a good combination! I also like to go savory sometimes (some sliced green onions and some Spike's seasoning - or Mrs Dash).

Weight Loss Do you beat youself up when you go over your calorie limit? Sep 09 2009
22:37 (UTC)

Its important not to beat yourself up over that - guilt doesn't do you any good! At best, you enjoyed a holiday weekend, which, as long as its not a super-regular thing, is good for you. If you can't enjoy a cheat day every once in a great while, you're not living! And at worst, you had a few overly caloric days and you're going to get back on track now. And its important that you don't try to undereat to "make up" for any day you've messed up. Just get back into your regular calorie range, and move forward.

Weight Loss Diet pepsi?? Sep 09 2009
17:30 (UTC)

I feel like I lost more weight and feel better since I cut out the diet soda/crystal light from my diet. First off, because I would drink four cans a day, and all of that caffeine couldn't be a good thing. And second off, because once my alternatives were gone, I started to actually drink water. I'd go to fruits for my sweetness and hydration more often, rather than just grabbing a diet pop. Plus I think I was addicted to carbonation.

Foods Canned soups, good or bad? Sep 09 2009
17:19 (UTC)

I like canned soups as a once in a while thing, but I prefer to make my own - less sodium, you get more soup for the price, the flavor's more developed than store-bought, and there are less preservatives since the veggies are fresh.

Weight Loss Where do you lose "it" first? Sep 09 2009

I lost my neck/chin first. Followed by waist, thigh, arms and fingers/wrists. I've still got my lovely/horrible pear shape, and after losing 80lbs I've only lost one cup size (still DD).

Weight Loss Why is healthy eating so expensive? Sep 09 2009
16:38 (UTC)
30

Junk food is getting just as expensive, some of it! At my grocery store, doritos are $3.99/bag and pepsi is $4.99/12 pack.

I'm a vegetarian, so I may not have the answers to the meat problems you have. But...

1. Dried spices last longer than fresh. Unless you've got a PHENOMINAL fresh herb selection with great prices, just get a jar of the dried ones and you'll have it on hand for many meals to come. And that way, next time a meal calls for sage, you can just grab it from your pantry instead of having to buy it fresh every time.

2. Embrace meat as an accompaniment. Maybe you were doing this before, maybe not. But a meal that relies on meat to be the primary focus will cost more, since meat costs more than the alternatives (grains, pastas, legumes...) Try to divide the meal between meat, a pasta or something, and a vegetable. Healthier and more economical.

3. Lunchmeats are expensive. Especially "healthy" ones, or fresh-cut from the deli counter. Turkey meat at my deli counter is $6.99/lb! You can get a whole turkey for a WAY better deal than $6.99/lb. Yes, you'll have to cook it and cut it up yourself. But you're paying for convenience. Though, really thinking of it, how convenient is it to drastically overpay for something?

4. Some people don't like TVP, but mixing TVP (textured vegetable protein) in with ground beef will stretch it further. I personally love tvp, and its cheap.

5. Stock up on pantry staples when they're on sale! They don't go on sale often. But every once in a while, you'll see a sale on whole wheat pasta/brown rice/quinoa/whatever grain you like. Check the expiry dates and, if they're good, stock up! You'll spend more that week, but less in the long run. That's also a good time to try new grains that you may not have before. (Pantry staples isn't specifically limited to grains/legumes - if you use canned pasta sauce, stock up. Or canned vegetables, dried spices, food-additive sauces like soy or worcestire...

Motivation What is your motivation to get to the gym? Sep 09 2009
16:08 (UTC)
4

1. Falling off the workout wagon does not make you a failure! Beating yourself up about it will only leave you feeling low (and probably craving comfort food).

2. I have two motivations - fat loss, and food enjoyment. I definitely lose more fat when I work out than when I don't. And if I go to the gym and burn 500 calories, I've earned myself a piece of a baked good (or a brownie, cookie, ice cream scoop, etc).

Try to make yourself go once - when you've done that, it should be easier to make it a routine. Think about how much better you felt back when you were working out regularly!

Young Calorie Counters How to lose 3 pounds a week? Sep 09 2009
15:55 (UTC)
1

Having a HEALTHY defecit, as many of the above posters said, is the way to go. But don't get discouraged if you don't lose 3lbs every single week - you didn't gain 3 every week when putting it on, did you? So to expect 3 every week when taking it off might be a disappointment. Don't look for an exact number per week, just look for it to be going predominantly down, and  your body to start looking/feeling better.

Motivation Try little things to keep yourself motivated!! What do you do???? Sep 09 2009

I buy myself things that may help in the weight loss. My first 20lbs got me a vegetable chopper (since I hate to chop my own but need vegetables), then got some adjustable dumbbells, and now I'm about to get an emulsifier-style blender for juicing (should make the last 20 lbs go faster).

I like to do larger rewards like that, but for others, helping in the weight loss may just be getting a workout dvd or getting a new pair of jeans that show off your legs and get you tons of compliments. Whatever makes you feel good and keeps you motivated!

Weight Loss Having trouble getting enough calories... Sep 02 2009
20:53 (UTC)

I'd suggest adding healthy fats like avocados or nuts (a few spoonfuls of peanut butter can add 200 quick cals to your day, and a bit of sliced avocado on your turkey wrap could be really easy to fit in and still not make it seem like you're eating more food). And don't rule out adding a healthy snack bar either (larabars are all natural fruit and nuts, most are raw, and can add 200 cals to your diet easily while making you feel like you've had a treat).

I mostly get Stonyfield Farms yogurt - nothing artificial, though there can be lots of sugars added to the flavored ones.

Weight Loss Eat More to Lose Weight? Aug 31 2009

Are you burning, in total, between 2700-3200 cals a day? I haven't started p90x (though I plan to soon) but from my current weight/activity level I'm supposed to eat about 1900 cals a day (2100 when I really push myself). You should be burning between 500-1000 more than you consume.

I don't know if its about being overweight, but a retail employee in general will give more/better attention to someone they're physically attracted to than someone they're not. I'm guilty of that too. I think in general, people are more likely to treat people that they're attracted to better than people that they're not.

In restaurants though, I've found that being overweight gets me BETTER treatment because they figure I may order more food than a slimmer person would - which means more sales, which should mean a higher tip.

The Lounge Vegans/Vegetarians...I have a question May 31 2009

I never liked the texture of certain meats (though after being vegetarian for 10 years, I'm perfectly happy to eat meat substitutes that are realistically textured). I mean, I loved things like drumsticks and honey baked ham, but hamburger is the most disgusting thing I've eaten, ever, and I hate steak. And at the time, I was living at home - I wouldn't be allowed to say "I'm not eating hamburger anymore". It was either all vegetarian, or nothing. So, vegetarian. Now that I've moved out, its a mixture of not really liking meat, losing my craving for it over the years, and... well, stubbornness.

Did you have the unsweetened soy milk? Even the kind that says "plain" in the market has added sweetener, you have to get "unsweetened". I didn't like tofu at first, but I've found that it depends how you use it. Plain, silken tofu? Bland and noodley textured. Firm/extra firm tofu that's either been pre-seasoned, or that you've marinated yourself? delicious! (I like Soyboy brand Italian, plus I've got some BBQ flavour in there now that's to die for). Its just in how you cook it. I do agree that the cheese is rather nasty though.

Foods Am I doing something wrong? May 31 2009

Well, it seems like you're eating a lot of "diet foods" - they're all good for you, and it seems like the kind of diet you'd be full off of, but adding a few high-cal-for-low-volume foods in there couldn't hurt!

Oh, and some peanut (or almond or cashew) butter on your rice cake might help. Plus be delicious.

Foods Am I doing something wrong? May 31 2009

You could try switching the pudding to something snackable but more high-cal? You could also put some avocado, toasted nuts, or cheese on your salad. You could eat a whole pita with breakfast? Or even a banana, to add cals.

Weight Loss peanut butter problem May 29 2009

Are you eating enough fat other than that in your diet? If you're severely limiting your fat intake, your body could be crying out for the peanut butter just for the fat content!

Foods Fiber! May 29 2009
17:08 (UTC)

Fruit and veggies are always good! Whole grain crackers are fine too. How many whole grain products are you eating with meals? That would be a good way to sneak some in... whole grain bread with your sandwiches, for instance (the kind in my fridge would add 4 grams per 2 slices) or whole grain pasta with steamed veggies (one serving of whole wheat angel hair has about 5 grams, plus that of any vegetables you add).

Just try to increase it slowly... adding too much fiber at once can make you irregular too, but in the opposite direction in which you currently are.

Motivation Small hurdles May 29 2009

Congratulations! It seems like a little hurdle, but that's actually a big step - not taking something from a big tray of "mystery calorie" foods is a good indicator that its not just your body changing - your willpower is growing too, and food doesn't have the power over you that it once did. So, good for you!
