Weight Loss giving up sweets cold turkey Mar 12 2009

It sounds like we have a lot in common!  Sweets are definitely the biggest obstacle I face too.  I have tried to go cold-turkey but I struggle making it more than a day or two, just like you.  One healthy alternative that helps me get my chocolate fix is making sugar free chocolate pudding.  It's low-calorie (for a dessert) and is easy to make.  I definitely don't buy sweets because I'll just sit and eat them.  THe best thing I've found is to keep the house empty of them, and if a craving gets too bad, I'll go to the local ice cream shop and get a small frozen-yogurt blizzard.  It's probably 300-500 calories(?), but it fills me up and stops my craving without indulging in a whole box of Oreos or whatever.  I don't really eat 100 calorie packs much because they just leave me wanting more.  My key is to make sure I REALLY want it (i.e. I really AM hungry), and then finding something substantial, yet semi-low-calorie, and in a single serving!  Hopefully this helps :)

Hey everyone!  I am 21, (22 in Sept) and am entering my 4th year of college.

Height: 5'6"/5'7 ish

Current weight: 163ish

Goal weight: 150, then 145

Like a lot of you, I don't want to be "skinny," but I want to be healthy.  I have a lot of muscle because I played a lot of sports and still am really active, so a lot of people don't think I weigh as much as I do.  I just want to get rid of some of that jiggle on my belly and my huge thighs! haha

Sooo... my calorie goal is 1500 or 1600 per day.  I also workout however long I feel that day, but the minimum is 30 minutes on the elliptical.  Sometimes I go up to an hour if I'm really motivated.  I also have been running a lot lately and doing some occasional stadium stairs.  Also, I try to ride my bike around town instead of driving... good exercise and saves money!  Good luck everyone!

Hey girls!  I'd like to join too!  I'm 21, about 5'7 and right now I weigh about 162 or so.  My weight varies soo much.  I just got home from SPring Break where I don't even want to know how many calories I consumed (wayyy too much junk food)!

Anyways, my goal is 150.  After that maybe 140-145 but I would probably settle for 150 just because I am pretty athletic so I think it would be an ok size for me.  Anyways, today was the first day of eating healthy.  My goal is 1500 calories, but usually I go by the calorie counter on the homepage and try to get a deficit of 500-1000 calories instead.  Today I ate 1740 but my counter says I will have burned 2740 by the end of the day... gotta love those ellipticals!!  GOod luck everyone! =)

Young Calorie Counters College Students -- Do you add studying/school to activity log? Jan 13 2008

I woudn't add in all of those 800 calories... it's my understanding that those 800 calories are just the normal calories your body burns doing nothing, which is included in your BMR.  So if you have a BMR of 1500, and CC says you burn 800 studying, what you're saying is that you are burning 2300 calories that day.  However, I think that those 800 calories from studying are part of those 1500 (plus obviously some calories from turning the page, writing, etc).  Hope this helps, and sorry in advance because I think I may have just confused you lol.
Fitness First Work Out Plan Dec 28 2007

It's great that you want to start working out more!  I would recommend taking it light from the beginning.  If you think 20-25 minutes of jogging is all you can do, go from there.  Increase a few minutes each week.  As far as weights, I would try to get a workout buddy.  One idea for pushups that I've heard is to do like 10 before bed every night, then increase to 15 the next month.. just a suggestion.  Crunches aren't my favorite thing so I only do them about once a week (if that lol).

I took spin classes at college this year and LOVED them!  People say they are a killer but you honestly get out of them what you put into them.  If you want to take it easy, you can.  If you want to give 110%, you will come out nice and sweaty (like me haha)! Smile  I wouldn't worry about working out in public, a lot of people are so worried about themselves they probably wouldn't even notice you.  If it makes you feel better, just find a workout buddy!  Or you could try to do some stuff at your house for a few weeks then hit the gym!  Good luck.

21 here!  I coach basketball and sometimes my girls tell me I could dress in their uniform and just blend right in haha.  Could be worse I guess!  So how do you all who are trying to diet deal with alcohol?  I try not to drink very often 1-2 times per month but I feel like those 800 calorie nights really hinder my dieting..

One of the things I realized with these bikes is that you really have to do one of two things to burn the calories... 1. turn the resistance up a lot, or 2. pedal pretty fast.  Still, I think 12 wayyy off.  I usually burn like 37 or so in 7-8 minutes but that's not going very fast.  I took a few spinning classes and a great thing to do is either "mountain climb" which is turning up the resistance, peddling, then up again.. until you get to as hard as you can go, and then go back down.  Another thing was "sprinting".. put the resistance at about your own personal level 5 (about half as hard as you can go) and then do 10-30 second intervals with slowing peddling in-between.  These should help burn more calories than just straight peddling.  But I would definitely get the real calorie count.  I would guess its more around 200 or something.

Foods Snacks - using peaches Dec 03 2007

If you're looking for something really low-cal, you could mix peaches in with some sugar free jello.  Just mix them in when you make it, stick it in the fridge for awhile, and voila.  It's really good for dessert if you add a little Cool Whip on the top!  Mmm!

Well I would say you can definitely eat your 1500 calories and still lose weight.  In order to lose a pound a week, you need a 500 calorie deficit each day (3500 calories per week = 1 pound weight loss).  Since you are working out and burning 800 calories, right now you have that deficit of 1000 calories (1500+800= 2300 calories burned.. then subtract that 1300 you eat... leaves you with a deficit of 1000).  That deficit of 1000 should mean you lose 2 pounds per week if you do it everyday.  However, I think it would be hard to keep that up for longer than a week.  Your body will get very tired and (probably very hungry!) since you aren't eating much.  I heard you aren't supposed to go lower than your BMR (1500 in your case).  Hope that helps a little!
Weight Loss Adding In Calories? Sep 20 2007

I would plan a little snack for after dinner.  It looks like the rest of your day is pretty evenly spaced as far as snacks and meals.  I would find a low-calorie snack that fills you up to help stop the binging.  If it is dessert you are craving, you could try Skinny Cow ice cream sandwiches which are either 100 or 140 cal, I forget which.  An apple/ yogurt is another filling and healthy snack.  If you are trying to snack without the calories, try some sugar free jello.  You can eat as much of it as you want (like the whole pack if you are really hungry) for like 20 calories.  Hope that helps a little!

Try some fruit, like an apple or banana.  Also Dannon Light n Fit yogurts are only 60 calories each.  My advice is to try not to wait too long before meals because when you get too hungry it's easy to eat everything in sight.  Also, if you really are craving a junk food snack, buy the smallest one they have (single serving if possible).  For example, don't buy the big bag of Oreos, but the little pack that has 6.  Still quite a few calories but it will help your portion contol.  Also, just try not to buy the junk food... if it's not there, you can't eat it!  Another favorite snack of mine are the Fiber One bars.. they are really good for only 140 calories (and filling!) and I get my chocolate fix with them!

I am 5'7" and about 170.  I've lost about 10 lbs over the summer from my highest weight ever.. ugh.  My goal is 160, then ultimately 150.  All throughout high school I weighed 160 and would like to be just a bit under that.  I think any lower than 150 would be pretty tough since I work out a lot and have a lot of muscle.  How many calories a day are you girls that are about my size shooting for?  I am going for about 1600 which is pretty much my BMR then I figure I burn 500+ throughout the day, for a weight loss of 1 lb per week.

You might be able to try an elliptical if you have access to one.  Most gyms have them.  They are great for burning calories without the impact on knees that running has.  You can increase the resistance to burn more calories too.

k_140,  thanks for the advice!  Its soo hard to resist being around it all the time!  Lately I have done really well, but I am just hoping once that big day rolls around I can do the same!!  I'm kind of thinking of limiting myself to maybe 2-3 times a month or something.  We'll see lol.  Do any of you guys know what the best low-cal drinks are?  I know light beer is 100ish, and I don't even touch the "girly drinks" but I will occasionally have a Mike's Light (only 76 cal).  Thanks!
Weight Loss Advice on Cutting Weight Sep 13 2007

It seems like you are doing everything right except one thing that sticks out to me... your calorie intake.  It seems pretty low for your body weight and amount of time you workout.  I'm sure someone can give you the numbers, or there is a tool on this site somewhere, that gives advice on how many calories to intake daily.  I think that maybe by upping it a couple hundred it might help boost your weight loss (ironic I know).  I'm not really an expert but some people on here seem to know a lot about the subject, hopefully they can further explain!  Good luck!

Hey everyone, I'm in the same boat!  My 21st is coming up in about 2 weeks but I am also trying to lose about 10-15 lbs.  I like to go out and party occasionally but I really don't know what to do since it will make losing weight that much harder.  Any tips?

I would recommend trying some oatmeal for breakfast because it is pretty low calorie (150 cal for a half-cup).  I like to cut up a banana and mix it in to add some flavor.. pretty much any fruit would work.  This usually keeps me full for a few hours (not easy to do).  I also really like Dannon Light N Fit yogurt too.. only 60 calories and very tasty (not sure about artificial sweetners in this though).  Hope that helped a little for some more filling ideas.

I also have two piercings on each ear and really like them.. to clean then when I first got them done, I found that hydrogen peroxide (like 88 cents at Walmart) works just great.  I just used a q-tip to try to get the new piercings nice and clean.  I have no idea about a belly button piercing, but I'd like to get it done someday (when I reach my goal weight maybe?!) so I'd like some advice too!

I'm a college student trying to lose (at least) 10 lbs too!  My current goal is to lose 10 to get to 160, so I guess that counts.  And I agree, the night life and drinking are probably the hardest things that hinder weight loss.  Any tips for how to go about reducing calories yet still being able to enjoy some beverages?

Thanks nycgirl!  I will definitely check out those tools, thanks.  And yes, I guess I forgot to mention the fact that I am a girl!  It always felt like 1500 is too little, even though it worked last time - although at this point I do weigh more, so it makes sense to eat more to lose.  I think I'm going to try to aim for about 1800 calories per day.  I figure that should hopefully be about a 400-500 calorie deficit with my workouts.  Thanks for explaining, it really helped all of those articles become A LOT easier to understand in normal person terms!  Any other tips are also welcome!!
