Original Post by ufrancis: I don't care who you are, if you have the nerve to harass a young woman about her body--especially when she's trying and struggling with healthy weight loss and poor body image--you are not fit to be a mother. I sincerely hope that your children don't develop eating disorders when they're older...you honestly do need to rethink your words, for their sake and the sake of those around you. I pray that you only said such harsh words because you're safely hidden behind a computer screen...not that your statements are okay in any place or form, but at least then your children won't be hearing it. Thank God that Lafoutloud is a smart girl--hopefully she won't decide to starve herself because of your criticisms. There are a lot of girls that don't think things through and will take drastic action in order to please those that hurt them...my best friend nearly slipped into and eating disorder because of comments from her peers. I don't mean to be a jerk; I am warning you of the consequences of your words. |

Wow...that was wonderful advice...THANK YOU!:) One last thing, though...I've been gaining since I began eating 3000 or more calories, dispite it being obvious that I needed more than 2400 to fuel my activity. Can the body gain weight from adjusting to more food, too? How much? |

I am hypoglycemic along with the IBS, so I have to eat 6 meals per day in order to avoidinsanity, low blood sugar and complete discomfort. Sometimes I'm hungry for them, sometimes I'm not, but I'll get ravonous once I start eating. I lack appropriate hunger signals at points, so my doctor suggested calorie or exchange counting. I hate using exchanges, and when I went to a dietitianfor help, she put me on a 2400 cal exchange plan for my activity level...the pounds dropped like flies. I went down to 110-115ish and mom commented on my bones sticking out and such....I started eating more and gained 20 lbs in a few weeks. This is why I'm unsure of everything. I'm guessing my weight at this point, since I stopped weighing after 130. I'm ok withbeing that weight...but I'm not okay with being unhealthy or eating inappropriately...I don't know if I'm overeating, under eating, or what? I don't get a period, I'm gaining weight and bloating like crazy, and I'm waking up at night STRAVING...I don't understand...my doctor doesn't get it...your personal insight is wonderful, though....it's now a matter of figuring 'me' out... I eat about an hour before bed, if not right before it. I've tried waiting longer and eating different things, but I always wake up ravenous anyway. Again, I am kind of forced to account for my intake somehow, as my hunger levels are screwed up and I don't really understandwhat hunger feels like unless I'm starving or stuffed full. I estimated that all of the stuff that Ido would probably equal out to about the equivalent of 3 hours of exercise per day on average (including the 14-15 hrs weekly cardio, 3 hrs weights, daily cleaning, stretching, twitchiness, lack of sitting)...since being active on your feet all day is a stress on the body. The calculator said 2420 for one hour, which is 660 more than the no activity number...would that be a good idea of what I require? That would equal about 3700 calories per day...does that sound like way too much for what I do? I really don't know... I'm a nervous wreak...I'm likely being annoying and redundant, too...I'm sorry...I just don't want to hurt my body in any way...I already put it through a lot when I was sick. |

I'm taking an IBS med called Amitiza...but it doesn't cause weight gain and, if anything, has been known to REDUCE appetite. =/ I'm biking 180 miles per week, or walking/jogging 60 miles per week, or a mixture of the two...this is all so confusing!! I agree that 3000 isn't much with my activity level...I oftentimes have more than that--and still wake up in the middle of the night! I don't eat any processed food, either--I'm wheat intolerant. I also hate sweets, so besides a tbsp of blackstrap mollasess each day, I don't eat sugar...I'm eating nutritious food...it's so odd. |

Thanks, Jane, but I'm still confused... The calculator suggests 2420 for only one hour...I do two and I'm always doing something otherwise --even if I'm not cleaning, lifting, stretching...etc (I'm Bipolar type 1 and I twitch/rock back and forth often to calm myself). I've been eating about 3000-3500 calories per day and I'm still hungry at night...I don't get it, and I'm losing sleep due to this insane appitite....it only comes when I should be sleeping, too...I'm getting doubtful that I actually need more food.... |

Thank you so much!:) I will be aiming for about 2800 tommorrow, then, and I'll also be sure to switch it up a bit as you suggested. I'll add an extra carb exchange or two when I'm active and remove one or two when I'm not. You've answered everything now--what a great help! Oh, and I don't beleive in eating fat free or processed foods, so that won't be an issue.;) |

I don't want to lose any weight--I want to STOP losing. My athletic performance and overall health are suffering due to under eating and I don't know what to do to stop it! I have a feeble appetite due to IBS, which only provides me with MAYBE enough for a sedentary state. I am very active, though! I'm worried that I'll hurt myself and stunt my growth if I continue under eating, but I don't know how much to eat. I have already been counting for a while in an effort to determine my caloric needs, but it's not working out very well. I would love some help. My doctor wants me to keep track of my intake unless my appetite becomes better at some point. I'm hypoglycemic, anyway. I know how to use exchanges. Can anybody provide me with proper exchanges, maybe? I just want to be healthy. Thanks for your help. |

I ride my bike about 70 miles per week, walk/jog about 35 miles per week, weight lift 1 hours per week, stretch every day, clean around the house every day, and do very active gardening work for about 4-5 hours per week. It varies, of course, but that's an average of what I do. I'd like to do more, but I don't have the time nor the desire to eat more than I already do.=P I'm also standing all day long, unless I happen to be sleeping or ridding in a car. I hate sitting. |

mkculs- I was eating probably about 2000-2200 calories on top of riding my bike about 100 miles per week (and that being my only exercise) for a short period of time due to a lack of appitite (thus, the reason that i am now counting cals...I want to confirm that I'm properly fueling my body). Now I have increased I also had a bad gallbladder which caused my body to go into starvation mode despite eating normally and not exercising....but that was back in 2006/early 2007. Don't worry, I'm not looking to lose any weight at all. I just was commenting on the fact that it feels really awkward and seems rather odd to be so jiggly. I thought that development only produced a slight jiggle in the thigh area...thanks for informing me that it is normal! I didn't know...it's rather hard to know what is healthy and normal in today's world. djfood-I am eating 2600-2700 calories per day, composed of 40% fat, 30% carbs and 20% protein, or thereabouts. I don't focus on eating specific ratios, but that is how it always seems to work out. I never eat refined grains or sugars...I'm intolerant to fructose and gluten. This also keeps processed foods out of my diet. I don't eat meat aside from fish on a very rare occassion, though I do eat eggs and dairy (LOTS of eggs and dairy!). I aslo enjoy beans, vegetables, yams, buckwheat groats, and oatmeal. I take a tablesppon each of flaxseed and blackstrap mollasess daily for omega 3's and iron. I have experimented with my salt intake and water intake for quite a while, but it hasn't changed anything. I'm not going to diet to see if it is water retention or not. I'm not looking to do that. Thanks for the advice, though. As for exercise, last week I walked/jogged 35 miles, biked 74 miles, did about an hour of weight exercises, and did heavy weeding at my job on a tree farm for 4 straight hours. I tend to stand all day, too. This past Sunday I did an experiment on my own and took a day off from exercise. I don't often weight myself, but I weighed in Sunday morning and the morning after to see what would happen to my weight. I dropped 5 pounds and noticed a severe reduction in my stomach bloating--my pants were looser too. So, do you think that the exercise is causing water retention in the muscles? |
