The Lounge College students should be required to maintain a 3.5 GPA. Dec 02 2008

Honestly, to require a 3.5 would just cause some SERIOUS grade inflation after a few years, especially if affluent students started doing more poorly.  I'm forced to maintain a 3.5 for my grants, but not everyone is, of course.  There's already a grade inflation problem across the US--a few years ago, 90% of students graduated from Harvard with honors degrees.  Seriously?  I don't want to push that any more than we already have.  Where do others shine, then?  I understand where you're coming from, but you wouldn't have a whole lot of legitimacy to the system after a few years--universities are a lot of business working these days already.  Let's still have the education count!

Weight Loss Do you weigh dressed or undressed?? Aug 23 2008

I usually weigh myself in my pajamas...they're lightweight, so it's not like I'm adding on the extra 5 lbs. your clothes (especially jeans) might give you, but I can also give myself the satisfaction of knowing that I'm not ridding myself of every ounce before I step on that scale.  It just gives me a greater feeling of self-esteem, like the numbers matter less.  BUT that's just me.  I think whatever works best for you is just that--what works best for you!

Fitness runners high? Aug 23 2008

I'm trying to get there, but I don't really have that 'runner's high' yet, either.  My roommate says she always knows almost exactly where 3 miles is on her run, even if she hasn't mapped it out beforehand, because that's when her endorphins kick in.  I'll believe her--she's run the Boston Marathon the past two years (sophomore and junior years of college), and wasn't a runner AT ALL until second semester of her freshman year.  Let's just see when I get there....

Congratulations!  The same thing happened to me, ironically once I hit college.  I completely left my covertly-depressed, anorexic, hard-partying ways and became a much more loving, happy, uplifted person.  I appreciate life so much more now than I did in high school, and I couldn't be more grateful for my life as a whole.  While it took me a few years to really love the person I am, I really do now--and I'm so proud of who I've become.  All those harder times were just strengthening me up for the person I am now; without those experiences, all of my luck and blessings in life wouldn't mean nearly as much to me as they do.  There has to be something greater out there.

It really sucks! I don't look at it as just 20 calories a day it's over 100 calories in a week or more. I eat one for breakfast everyday with a piece of fruit and sometimes will grab on between lunch and dinner when I work late. When your eating less than 1000 calories a day 20 calories adds up.

Really, 100 cals in a week isn't that much.  It's still less than a lot of other yogurts out there--and if you still want to eat them, you can alter your food intake likewise.

PS--It's important to eat more than 1000 cals/day--you'll feel (and be) so much healthier.  Not a criticism, just a friendly suggestion Laughing

I just bought it recently, and I really like some of the ideas!  But, I do agree with dartrinton a little.  I want to eat healthily--I'm not just looking for a shortcut to be able to eat onion rings again!

Although, butternut squash fries are absolutley FANTASTIC...and I love having new ways to make starbucks coffees in my home!  (I'm an absolute coffee addict...but, it's not something I'm looking to give up yet Wink).  It's great to have as a resource, even as a base to start some of your own ideas!

If you're stuck on a meal plan (life gets a lot easier if you're not, because you can buy/pack all your own food choices each day), remember the same tricks you'd use for eating out--and be careful, just like misspriss said.  Late nite definitely can kill you if you're not careful.  What got me more was the bakery (those muffins are soooo good!) and coffee places--what can I say, I have a sweet tooth and I love my caffeine.

However, if you're really busy during the day (like i am--hence the coffee Wink), buy a bunch of little things that can become one big lunch--that's what I do.  For example, grab some to-go veggies (carrots, celery), a piece of fruit, a yogurt, nuts--things that you can snack on continuously, so your sugar level never drops and you're not going to end up super hungry come dinnertime.  A lot of times, dining halls will have containers of nuts that you can buy and keep in your room--it makes snack-sized portions easy to carry around, that's for sure!

Good luck!

I'm a student, majoring in Theology (Historical-Biblical Studies) and Music (Theory and Composition), and I have minors in Hispanic Studies and General Education.  Obviously, I'm going to be living in a box.

Actually, I'm hoping to either go in for my Ph.D. or work at a huge church as their music director--as long as I get to keep composing!

Thanks so much, guys!

On the plus side, I have a pretty easy time adjusting to the heat, since my mom's in florida (she moved there right when I graduated high school, so I've spent every summer living down there--you get used to it fast!).  I figured it's like other more recently built cities--fairly new, but a must to drive because of their low-density planning.  Haha, after driving in Boston, I can handle any kind of driver out there!

I'm planning on making a trip out in a few weeks, so I guess we'll see for real then!

Haha, I wrote a 15-page paper on this for a final for my Spanish class in high school... :-)

Theoretically, I can see how NAFTA was originally construed as a huge economic positive for our nation.  We are so dependent on Capitalism and free trade in our economy that making it tarriff- free between neighboring nations definitely seems like a positive.

HOWEVER, that just means that since the companies aren't earning enough money from tarriffs, they need to increase the deficit somewhere else--labor wages!  The maquiladoras (read: sweatshops) along the border in Mexico are killing the Mexican economy, and forcing Mexican citizens to work for less than they deserve and in conditions that would never be acceptable in the United States.  Some argue that these people wouldn't have jobs except for those minimum-wage paying jobs; however, how can someone fairly say that these jobs are fair for a human being?  Just because they dont' live in the US doesn't mean they are any less deserving of the same basic privilages-turned-rights that we expect out of each and every job we have.

I am proud to be a US citizen, I really am.  However, I have yet to see much good in our involvement in Latin America anywhere, either.  Even the Panama Canal had its serious downsides!  Wink

The account main page only shows three items.  If you go your food log page, then you'll see the list of everything that you've logged that day.  If it's wrong, just click the red 'x' next to the item, and that deletes it off the list.  Good luck!

Frankly, if you're doing ok, then it's ok.  I sometimes go for a run in the morning, and I can't exercise with any food in my stomach, either.  However, I've noticed that I can't run quite as long or well as I can in the middle of the day, not when I'm full but after I've had some nutrition in my body.  If you're doing ok and you're not feeling lightheaded, then I really don't see what the problem is.

you should try Nature's Own Honey Wheat bread, it's my absolute favorite! it has only 60 calories. They also have a light brand which is the same but with only 45 calories. My boyfriend who normally doesn't like wheat bread absolutely loves this bread! give it a try... great with peanut butter!

I'm a huge fan fo the Nature's own breads.  They also have lots of fiber in them, which is always a plus--especially for the light ones, because it fills you up more than the store brand light breads would.

Foods Sodium in soup Jul 23 2008

Frankly, there's a reason there's a daily value on sodium intake--there's a certain amount your body should fairly process.  Just like too much sugar, or fats, or cholesterol, one day isn't going to hurt you, but years of buildup most certainly will.  I really like soup in the winter months, too--try taking a look at the reduced-sodium kind that progresso or Healthy Choice have, and if you're like me, that'll do the trick just as well!

On days that you DO have a lot of sodium, however, just drink a lot more water--that'll flush out some of the extra salts, and while you might retain water for one day, that's all it is--water for a day.

I'm with you on the less processed egg whites. There's just something that creeps me out about pouring yellow, pre-scrambled pseudo-eggs from a carton.  I've bought them a few times (when they're $1.50 cheaper than eggs, the college student in me can't object too heavily), and they really taste fine...there's just something a little weird about it for me.  Part of it might also be me trying to avoid mocking from my roommates, which I can avoid by just being 'healthy' with egg whites...Wink

Hey there!  I'm a 21 year old college senior, about halfway there!  My goal is to get directly in the middle of the healthy BMI range, which means I'm aiming for about 145.  I'm right now on the border between overweight and healthy...about 20 lbs to go!

Caramelbaby, I was really that same way last week...I just laid down on my bed for hours upon hours, and didn't do a thing.  but I've gotten back on track this week, and I feel so much better!  I totally get the whole losing motivation thing.  We got this!

My sister worked at Nike for a few years (so maybe she's biased lol), but she LOVED the Nike+.  She used to set up goals, like running 100 miles, and then it would add up how much she ran each day, so she could make her goal in a month or something like that.  Yeah, she's the athletic one in the family....haha

Foods A Question About Sugar Jul 15 2008
23:48 (UTC)

I've noticed the same thing.  Mainly, if you eat a lot of fruit, the sugar is going to seem extraordinarily high, especially if you're eating pretty healthily.  I actually had the exact same breakfast this morning, so I think we might eat fairly similarly!  Basically, I don't worry much about it, because most of my sugar throughout the day is from fruits, adn I don't think you're going to get many people who argue they're bad for you. I've made more of my snacks vegetables, and that dropped my sugar meter below what it was when I snacked on granola bars, etc.

Just personally keep an eye on the amount of processed, sugary foods you're eating, and you'll be ok.  There's sugar in most anything, but some (lactose, fructose) are in some of the healthiest foods around (milk, fruit).  Good luck!

When I'm hungry at a time when it's not mealtime (for example, right now), I tend to drink some water first, because, like others said, one of dehydration's signs is hunger, as well as thirst.  I always have  my Nalgene bottle with me (I've nicknamed it Fred Smile), because I'll continually fill it up during the day and then enough water is sure to get into my system.  It was the best $10 investment I've ever made.

Health & Support need some upping-the-cals ideas Jul 12 2008
21:24 (UTC)

On days when I've reached near the end of the day and I'm that far behind where I'm supposed to be, I tend to have a healthy, high-calorie snack--for example, a piece of whole wheat bread with some peanut butter.  There's some really good protein and healthy fats in that, and that'll bump you up some 300 calories or so.  I usually end up lacking in the healthy fats department because of how many vegetables I eat--which, by the looks of it, is similar to how you eat.  Good luck!

Weight Loss just can't see it.... Jul 11 2008

I didn't even realize I had lost weight at first!

I have a habit of weighing myself when I'm at my dad's (it was the only place where there was a bathroom scale actually out haha)...last time I did that (in march), I weighed 15 pounds less than I had the last time I weighed myself!  It's my family that notices first now, since I live with most of my friends and only see them max. 5 times a year.  But you know what?  It's all good!  The weight's dropping, you're getting healthier, and with each shirt that looks a little nicer than it did the last time, your self esteem goes up and the stride comes back in your step!

It's amazing how healthiness can help you enjoy life that much more, isn't it?  :-)

Weight Loss 500 Calorie Deficit: Will it Work? Jul 11 2008

I think the most important thing to remember is that it's NOT an "all-or nothing" thing.  So you have a few more cookies than you meant to today?  Doesn't mean you should have the whole pizza for dinner--your day isn't ruined, just a little more caloric than you intended.  Modify the rest of the day--or don't!  Just like kukua said, sometimes it's ok to zig-zag--as long as that's not your excuse for eating that half a cake, too ;-)

Motivation Unwilling to admit I'm dieting? Jun 11 2008

I also never say when I'm actually dieting.  It goes with the whole female empowerment 'I don't need to be a stick to be beautiful' mindset, I think.  I don't plan on being a size zero, but knowing I'm completely healthy would be good.  What I tend to say is that I want to take better care of myself, I want to treat my body as well as I treat my mind.  Frankly, isn't that the most important part?  Staying healthy, living a long life, so that you can enjoy all of it to the fullest.

If you don't want to tell people, don't.  Just know the reasons why you're doing it, and respect yourself wholeheartedly for them--regardless of what others' reactions might be.
