Young Calorie Counters To what extent are you girls influenced by models? Jun 19 2009

I'm not at all influenced by models because their photos are completely fake and retouched, and besides they work with hair and makeup stylists and designers for hours to look the way they do in the photos. In reality most of them aren't that much prettier than the average girl. I'm much more influenced by the real girls I see around me all day, on my college campus and in the gym.

Foods meal plan templates for different calorie ranges--WHAT DID YOU EAT TODAY?? Jun 18 2009

I get so confused coming onto this thread! Everywhere I go, I'm told to eat 1500+ calories per day, but then on this thread there are people subsisting on 1200 calories!! And people who are much bigger and more active than I am who eat only 1600 calories. Am I eating too much? I am 5'4, 20 years old, and I work out hard for 1/2-1 hour every day, doing cardio and strength training. Atleast that's what I've been doing for the last few months. My goal is to maintain my weight. I currently eat about 1400-1500 calories a day. Please tell me I can eat more without gaining weight because it feels like I'm eating so little, even though I eat very healthy :( Do I really have to eat as few calories as you all do?

Here is what I ate today:

Breakfast: organic raisin bran (315), plain yogurt (120), english muffin (100), almond butter (100), jam (50)

Lunch: hummus (100), plain yogurt (120),  cucumber sticks (20)

Snack: clif bar (250)

Dinner: boca burger (100), egg (80), spinach (20), peppers (20)

Snacks: dates (40), almonds (14), jello (10)

i bought a box of nature valley sweet & salty peanut bars yesterday--they are like CRACK!

Foods Favorite Girl Scout cookie?!? Mar 13 2009
00:25 (UTC)

I actually really dislike Thin Mints. The taste is great but the inside/cookie part is way too dry. Same reason I don't like the Thanks-A-Lots (chocolate-dipped shortbread)--the cookie is too dry and flavorless, not like real shortbread.

I like Samoas the best. They're a bit too sweet, but that doesn't stop me from eating them! It's actually good because it keeps me from eating too many at once :)

I've never tried the Peanut Butter Patties. I love peanut butter and peanut butter cookies so I think they'll be my favorites once I get my hands on some :)

Maintaining Ok, so I've been eating way too low calories, I want to maintain and increase without gaining.. Mar 11 2009

Original Post by chrissy1988:

you have to accept a few pound gain because you have been starving yourself essentially, but it will level off rather  quickly. like you said...you were able to eat maintenance level and not exercise without gaining weight so you shouldn't expect any drastic weight gain but it's important to increase as soon as possible because the longer you wait the more time you give your body to adjust to the decreased intake and the harder it is to reverse.

Exactly this.

Foods College eater! Mar 11 2009

I eat all my treats in the AM so it's easier for me to 1) control portions, 2) avoid temptation later in the evening. Try that? Eat something decadent for your breakfast/morning snack so you don't feel like you're dieting all day. When you get home for the evening, you'll be able to resist the treats much better. And of course, keep counting your calories.

Personal example: today I knew I was going to have lunch with my colleagues at a very tempting buffet. In the past I would have skipped breakfast in preparation/fear, but then gone to the buffet and caved in at the free cheesecake, parfaits, ice cream, and petit fours. Now I know better. Today I made sure to eat a breakfast I really liked, and then to have a small ration of treats before lunch (2 Girl Scout cookies and a small handful of M&M's and Reese's Pieces). I easily ignored the desserts at lunch and managed to eat a very light lunch amidst all the unhealthy choices.

I also find this to be incredibly helpful:

picture this in your mind...i am 5'4 and 107 lbs...and this was my binge last week (i am copying this from where i posted it in another topic):

I binged 4 days (actually it may have been 5) out of 7. on top of my regular calories, last week i ate 3 full sleeves of ritz crackers, 1 full sleeve of wheat crackers, a dozen hershey's kisses, a dozen oreos, 8 homemade buttermilk biscuits, 2 big slices of apple pie, 4 tablespoons of almond butter, 2 slices of buttered toast, 1 packet of ramen, 2 slices of baguette, 1/2 container of strawberry cream cheese and another 1/2 container of jalapeno cream cheese, 2 big bowls of banana pudding, 4 oatmeal raisin cookies, 2 bowls of bread pudding, 1 chocolate chip muffin, 4 nutrigrain bars, cashews, dark chocolate covered blueberries, 1 packet of reeses peanut butter cups, 1 1/2 frozen pizzas (1 = 800 calories), oh and i literally drank a cup of bechamel sauce out of the pot. And that isn't even everything. I keep adding stuff to this list as I remember it lol.

Here are mine (with plenty of repeats--people have hit on a lot of good ones so far!)

-oatmeal (instant is really convenient and tasty but i am trying to eat real old-fashioned oats these days)
-spicy foods (i use hot sauce and mustard daily)
-lowfat cottage cheese
-mini cucumbers
-homemade hummus
-boca vegan burgers
-lean ground turkey
-yogurt (my favorites are stonyfield farms lowfat and chobani greek)
-low-cal bread products (la tortilla factory 80 cal tortillas, nature's own 50 cal white wheat bread, thomas 100 cal light english muffins)

Methods/etc.:

-scrambled eggs in the microwave. no oil required! you can use regular bowls or tupperware and they won't stick.
-measuring cups and spoons
-eat pasta sauce over steamed veggies and instant mashed potatoes instead of pasta. just 1 serving of pasta is 200 cals and it's not very much or very filling. 1 big bowl of idahoan instant mashed potatoes is 80 cals and it goes great with pasta sauce and eggplant parmigiana and stuff like that. i often add a whole pat of butter to that for a much more satisfying side that still has fewer cals than pasta. steamed broccoli is also bulky and great.
-big breakfasts. starting off your day hungry is a recipe for disaster.
-eat treats like cookies for breakfast and get your cravings over with, instead of saving them for night

wow, yesterday BLEW. i was just so freaking hungry in the evening. i think it's because i had small, unsatisfying portions of high-cal stuff for 3 meals instead of 4-6 small healthy snacks. i don't know how some people say it's better to eat tiny bits of high-cal food. i definitely cannot do that.

11am: banana pancakes w/ syrup

1pm: eggplant parmesan w/ butter, mashed potatoes

6pm: steamed shrimp bun, crab dumplings w/ soy sauce

at this point i wasnt satisfied at ALL even though i had hit my calorie goal. so at 11 i let myself have a slice of apple pie with a scoop of vanilla ice cream...nope still not satisfied so i had a plateful of leftover homemade fried rice. then i felt sick and went to sleep really disappointed in myself and frustrated.

edit: i just totaled it up and it was 2600 calories. i want to die...

Weight Loss Does anyone here think that girls look better a little mushy? Dec 01 2008

Well before you go around saying you need "mush" and "curves" to look like a real woman, you should remember that not all of us girls are blessed with fat in all the right places. I have a very small chest and no butt either. It's how I am naturally built. But I think I too have the right to be proud of my body and to feel that I'm an attractive girl.

I personally don't think you need to be fat OR skinny to be "girly." Being a woman has nothing to do with how you look. Sure, I would love to be of another ethnicity (I'm Asian) so I could have some "cushion" in the "right" places but I'm not built to have curves. There is no one ideal "girly" body, that is the point I am trying to make.

beanaparker, why don't you just go with it? Give this freestyle diet an honest try for 2-3 weeks and see where it lands you. If you have gained weight (which is no big deal, at your age/size you can lose it super quick), then maybe you should cut down by 200 calories or so. If you're the same weight, then you know it's the right diet for you. It's worth finding out.  Let us know how it turns out!

P.S. I've been having a toasted marshmallow or two every day as well, lol. Yum, I love sitting by the fireplace in winter.

I planned this day out and it will be much more satisfying than the previous 2 days. Amazing how a little planning can completely change the profile of your diet from one day to the next without changing the amount of calories. Your post reminds me of that, lafoutloud01. I'm glad you had a satisfying and successful day :)
