quinoa! Its a complete protein (all amino acids in one!). Its a tiny seed but you use it like you would any grain, like barley or buckwheat. Sweet or savoury!
How about a quinoa breakfast, (with it cooked kinda like oatmeal)...with cinnamon, and some yogurt and milk
How about quinoa for lunch? Cooked up in vege stock with some herbs, and mixed with some beans (more protein!)
Or as a side (instead of rice at dinner?)
throw it cooked in muffins like you would fiber cereal. (or pancakes?!)
I havent tried it but mix it hot with cottage cheese: a very cheesey melty protein extravaganza?
It is a super food. Look it up on WH foods! |

I B S is awful! i find it so frustrating that there is no scientific reason for it, yet it effects me everyday.
I have found triggers to be: garlic, onion, raw fruits, raw vege, fatty food, artificial sweetners and general over-indulgance. Also stress! and unfortunately alcohol :(
Ive been trying taking pro-biotics and peppermint oil capsules, but havent noticed it helping that much. Im in medical school, and the other day we were learning about "channelopathies" in physiology. apparently research is being done into if IBS is an example of a common channelopathy- whereby our gut is basically over-excitable. I thought it was an interesting idea, and might do some literature searches. If that is the problem, maybe we can find a solution :) |

gah! I am exactly the same when studying. The crunch of carrot sticks helps me concentrate but is a little annoying for those around me. dry cereal is a good option- especially bran. takes a while to eat with your fingers and keeps you fuller for longer while studying....also made me thirsty so I would drink more (bonus!) I also enjoy wasabi peas...but i think theyre fried :(
Frozen grapes and frozen yogurts are good too, obviously as the very first snacks. This is a real problem for me keeping my calories under control- so i'd love to hear any more suggestions! |

| Health & Support | Frequent Sore Throats, Nausea, Celiac Disease? IBS? | Dec 18 2008 06:42 (UTC) |

I can relate! And it was glandular fever ( a mild case so never diagnosed as that- but subsequently have the antibodies)...and that can take months to recover fully....AND i think it resulted in a sensitive stomach ( trully mucked around immune system)....
So ive had plenty of tests too.... nothing. so the diagnosis is IBS (by exclusion of everything else)... Just make sure you rest when ur body asks for time out and keeping a food diary will help u identify trigger foods for the sore stomach.
for me personally= raw onion, garlic and apples (okay if cooked and in small quantity).... and artificial sweeteners.
its not fun huh, best wishes :) |

Probably a bit late now- but maybe for future reference!!
I have experienced the same thing: gum helped me concentrate: replace with carrot sticks (the crunch-factor really helped concentration!) and take big gulps of water in between ea stick .
Diet sodas: artificial sweetner + bubbles= sore stomach. Go for water (flavour with lemon for a zing), or if you need the caffiene (cos dont go cold-turkey- withdrwal is NOT nice) go for a coffee. Drink plenty of water with it too b/c caffiene can be dehydrating, and to think clearly you need to be very very hydrated :)
Dont forget exercise and sleep too- i often put these 2 things in the "do later" basket- BUT they help your study SO much |

| Health & Support | Am i anorexic?(could be triggering) | Dec 16 2008 07:49 (UTC) |

There a 4 types of EDs: Anorexic restictive Anorexic binging/purging (restrict most of the time) Bulimia= binging and purging/compensating constantly (typically normalish weight) AND Binge Eating= Binging with no compensating (Put on weight)
So yes you sound like ypu have Anorexia (Type 2 with the binging and purging) BUT your post is a cry for help and that is positive!! You are not so disillusioned yet to know that what you are doing is dangerous :) Ask for help, see some counsellors etc before you do get stuck
Good Luck xo |

Hi all, Its been over a month since i last binged- here's how I've done it:
I picked 5 or so recipes that are yummy and healthy, and cooked them all up. I then froze them in individual serves. these are my dinners, and i know exactly whats in them nutritionally and calorie-wise. This way there are no 'leftovers' to binge on, and if i get "that bingeing feeling" its too much effort to defrost. However if im actually hungry its worth the effort.
however if i DO want something sweet/chocolate- hot cocoas, frozen yogurts in individual tubs. Reserve the true treats (like cake and real icecream) for when you are out/at a friends and savour them. remember they are allowed, but they are a treat so infrequent is better.
another thing is i have been having a very large breakfast- sets me up for the day.
also- the 'analysis' function has been fantastic- log what u have eaten, and the frozen dinner that will come later, and determine what to eat for snacks/lunch by what u need to increase to get an A grade that day. worry less about cal, more about nutrition grade..... with this mentality you are less likely to binge, since youve already thought so hard about how to eat optimally that day- why waste that A!
ive been suprised that planning my meals ive actually had to try and fit in extra cals as snacks,---- b/c im not starving myself and eating sensibly i dont feel as controlled by food- im controlling it! and sometimes those 'snacks' to up the cal intake can be the foods i used to binge on- like choc and icecream--- but b/c ive got my mind on the analysis grade, just not so much of it to make the grade go down!
hope this helps any of you--- good luck xoxo |

Arg it is SO frustrating. I am studying for exams at the moment, and i eat compulsively. Ive tried making my snacks low-cal- ie carrot sticks, grapes, bananas, and even bran!!.... But when I get home, if no-one else is around- its into the pantry-freezer-fridge. eating whatever, even though im not hungry or the food isnt mine. its disgusting. I had the urge to 'restrict' tomorrow, but i know that this is wrong. furthermore i cant concentrate when studying if I'm hungry/not constantly eating... Oh and a question: i have my settings on sedentry- since im just at the libarary studying 10hours a day (!!!)... does that calorie count include my 'brain-power'?? becsuae I looked up studying in activitites and its 115 cal an hour- does that mean i can eat 1000 cal worth of snack foods??! the burnmeter still confuses me....
tomorrow will be better. sensible portions, at sensible meal times.
good luck everyone |
