Motivation It's Rough When My Husband Is Unsupportive Oct 31 2009

What is with men?  The first time I ran 5k outside I was so excited I called my mom and told her.  Her boyfriends response was "that's not a jog, that's a walk!".  My mom tried to hush him but the damage was already done.

Years ago when I was in college I got to the point where I could stay on the treadmill for 45 minutes straight.  I was always the kid in high school who could never finish running the track.  I told my husband and he said something about how I was barely moving.

And recently, I bought a treadmill and I'm working my way up in speed.  I was doing 5.0 and he said when he does that speed it feels like he's not even moving.

.... I figure I can take these comments and let them eat me up, or I can use them as motivation to keep going and push harder.  Show them how amazing you are!  Show them what you can do! Because what you did was amazing and you should be proud of yourself regardless of what they say!!!

Fitness awkward running question Oct 31 2009
12:55 (UTC)

Last winter when I began running I had the same problem.  I would be jogging along with my husband and BANG out of no where I had horrible cramps on my lower stomach and I felt like I had to go to the washroom really bad.  Not exactly the kind of problem you want to have a couple miles away from home!

I went to a doctor, he said he had no idea what it was and made me feel like an idiot.

I casually mentioned the problem to my massage therapist and she was a fantastic help.  She said there is a muscle that run from your pelvis to your spine and mine was obviously pretty weak for me to have these problems.  She showed me exercises and stretches that can help.

It's difficult to explain streches in words and I know how frustrating this problem is so I found pics on the net that might help.  Doing this stretch really helped me.

http://www.abc-of-fitness.com/leg-stretch/hip -flexor-stretch.asp

Do this before and after running, before bed... whenever.  It will help!

First off, congrats on the running!  I've started running recently too and I know what a wonderful sense of accomplishment it can be when you improve.  Congrats!

Have you been measuring yourself over these past weeks?  When you jog you will build leg muscles and muscle weighs more than fat. Also, to improve with running you will need to ensure you have enough calories or you will hit a wall.

I recommend you keep up the good work and enjoy feeling good.  Slow weight loss sucks but it's more likely to stay off in the long run.  Plus if it is muscle you are gaining it will help speed up your metabolism!

Cheers!

My doctor recommended something called salba (also known as chai seeds).  It's just a grain seed (like wheat or something).  You take about 1-3 teaspoons of it a day and just chew it and drink some water afterwords and it will take away your hunger or at least help it.

PLUS it is loaded with antioxidants, omegas and other great stuff.

Foods How do I know what to eat?! Feb 15 2009
13:18 (UTC)

Try to eat as many fruits and veggies as possible.  I lost weight as a veggie and felt great but went back to eating meat (and my waist line shows it).

Basically just count the calories of everything you eat (a scale really helps).  I find that when I count calories I naturally gravitate towards healthier foods because they fill me up more and are less calories.  I have turtles in my condo right now but I can't justify 75 calories for one little tiny treat.  It works for me.

Fitness HRM vs Elliptical machine calories burned Feb 14 2009

Firstly, it really depends on your weight.  My husband burns about a hundred calories more then me when we do the same workout simply because he weighs about 50 pounds more.

Having said that I doubt you burned 700-800 calories in 30 minutes.  The HRM might have assumed you were running or just might be very off.  Is it a good model?  It's nice to think that you might have burned that many calories in so little time but the problem is you might feel like you can eat more then you actually can which might result in you gaining weight.

After a month and a half of working out and a week of eating well and working out I finally lost weight!  Thank god, it was so disappointing not to see any change on the scale for so long.  The extra good news is I broke the 140 mark... I'm 138.8!  Woot!

PG and Forever being a vegetarian wasn't that bad.  It started as a joke.  I wanted to see if I could do it for a week.  By the end of the week someone showed me a peta video and I couldn't find a reason to go back to eating meat for four years... when I was finally just HUNGRY!  Saying that, I don't think I could go back.  :(  It's starting that is the worst... and the price!

I love running... don't get me wrong I suck at it but I love to see the improvements in what I can do.  I don't compete with others (cause that's a bring down).  I see what I can do and then try and do better the next time.  If I wasn't running for the month I didn't lose weight I don't think I could have kept up my fitness kick.  I tried to focus on my success in running instead of the scale (which was pretty hard).

Now I hope I don't gain weight again.  My body seems to like the 140's way too much!

Weight Loss Losing weight without really exercising? Feb 11 2009

You definitely can lose weight without exercise but as others mentioned you will lose more muscle that way which will ultimately result in a slower metabolism... which results in you gaining back the weight easier next time.  No fun!

If you have time to sit in front of your computer, watch tv, read a book, talk on the phone, go out to dinner... then you have time to work out.  Everyone has time we all just come up with a million excuses.

Not to mention that exercise will leave you feeling great!  Dieting without exercise personally just makes me feel crummy, lethargic and tired.

Oh this is def the thread for me!  I was in the 140's during university but when I became a vegetarian I went down to the mid 30's.  Then after 4 years I started eating meat again and BAM I went up to 146 before I realized something needed to change.  I was eating the same amount as before, if not less, but the weight just kept on packing onto me!  Now I'm working out and counting calories (trying to see if I can lose weight and still have the energy to run at 1800 calories a day... we'll see...my first goal is running and I hope weight loss will be a nice side effect).

Pgerogian your sucess is motivation!  Congrats and keep up the good work!

Weight Loss seeming impossible to lose wieght.. am I alone? Feb 08 2009

Hi!

I'll start by saying good luck on your weight loss goals!  As long as you aim to lose 1-2 pounds a week, it's healthy. I will tell you what worked and what didn't work through my experiences trying to lose weight myself.

I've tried calorie counting and that really worked for me.  I saw results on the scale after only 1 week.  The problem I had with calorie counting my first time round was that I ate too little for the exercises I was doing.  One day after walking 5k to work and only bringing a 5 calorie jello snack to eat I fainted!  Not just once, but twice!  It was scary.  My doctor reeled me out and I totally gave up and gained all my weight back.

Last month I started jogging.  I didn't count calories but I worked out about 5-7 days a week.  I felt and FEEL great.  I went from feeling dead after jogging .5 a mile outside and now I'm at 3.1 miles (5km) and I still feel like I feel great when I'm done.  I love what my body can do.  I see that my body is firmer but I'm not losing weight or getting smaller.  This is definitely because my appetite went through the rough! SO I've just started to count calories again.  I'm starting with a 2000 calorie goal the days I work out and 1800 when I don't.  I might tweak that a bit depending on if I see results.

I suggest you do the same.  Start with a reasonable calorie goal, wait to see if you see results and then change it accordingly.  You'll be easing into your new lifestyle (remember this is a forever thing) and you won't risk your health.

Plus, make sure you get your calories from healthy sorces.  You'll get to eat more (which is always good) and you will feel better.

Cardio should never reduce your energy.  If anything, it should do the opposite.  I suspect that you are eating too few calories for your age/weight/fitness regeme.

OMG girl you are going to kill yourself if you eat less then you burn.  Your body NEEDS calories to function.

Go to a doctor and have him or her outline a diet for you.  Eating so little will result in:

- scalp hair loss

- kidney problems

- heart problems

- bone and tooth decay

- constipation (as your body starts to process food slower to get every last bit of nutrients out)

I know how difficult it is to listen to your body.  Personally, I'm also training for my first 5k and I tried pushing through a flu...only to get worse and feel dreadful.  The same will happen with you.  If you keep pushing through your knee pain the situation will only get worse.

Here is my advice :

1) If possible see a doctor and see what they say.

2) Get glucosamine from a well known company.

3) Get a good pair of runners - If there is a "Running Room" near you, go visit it.  Otherwise, buy a shoe that is meant for your foot.  (http://running.about.com/od/shoesapparelandge ar/a/foottypes.htm)

4) Do some research on the internet.  I find articles on runnersworld to be very informative.  Maybe these links will help you http://www.runnersworld.com/cda/toolscontent/ 0,7156,s6-241-290-291-6899-0,00 .html?toolName=What%20Hurts?

Finally.......STRETCH!!!!  I only stretch at the end of a work out since stretching cold muscles can cause tears.  You can also warm up for about 10 minutes then stretch before the run.

I have been running for about a month and I've already noticed a huge improvement in my rear end.  It's not perfect yet but the change has been dramatic.  I stopped counting calories in November when I had a medical problem and my doctor told me to stop (I think I was taking it too far).  By December I had ballooned out to my original weight and I felt terrible.  I decided to sign up a 5k race as motivation to move.  I've been doing weights about three times a week and jogging about 5 to 6 days a week and I feel FANTASTIC.  I don't think I'm any smaller (I won't weight myself) but I'm definitely firmer. My ass and thighs look SOOO much better.

One person mentioned that running leads to higher body fat.  Personally I think that's pretty ridiculous.  Take a look at a distance runner and you will see they are anything BUT fat.  Doing weights will help build muscle (which burns calories) and will help improve your run.  You will need strong muscles to propel your body.

Don't expect that you will be a great runner the first time you go out.  Be ok with where you are even if that's a 1 minute run then a 2 minute walk interval for 30 minutes.  Be consistent in your training and each week push yourself a little further.  At the beginning of January I couldn't run 5k on the treadmill at an incline of 2, now I can do it in 34:30 minutes.  The running group in my area does a 10 minute run, then a 1 minute walk.

Weight Loss the downside of fridays Oct 11 2008
14:44 (UTC)

I totally sympathize.  Last week my doctor told me I can't be on the diet because I'm trying to have a baby (and dieting can cause birth defects, low birth weight, increased risk of death of the baby in the first month of it's life... yada) and I became totally depressed.  So I spent the last week binging on foods, not logging anything and not exercising.  Now I'm scared to step on the scale. I know I should be maintaining my weight and eating healthy for the baby, but that isn't what I did at all.

But what is done is done right?  We can't go back in time (unfortunately) so all we can do is try harder in the future.

Foods Eating way too much bread Oct 11 2008

You might be eating too few calories.  Log your activities and see how many calories you burn a day.  Try to aim for 500 calories less then that number.

You are probably also gaining mucsle which weighs more then fat.  Try measuring yourself as well as weighing yourself once a week.

I've had to switch over to maintaining my current weight because I'm trying to get pregnant (doctors orders) but when I was losing weight I always ate less during the day and binged at night while staying within my total calorie limit which was 1600 calories.  I lost about 1-2 pounds per week doing this (of course I worked out as well).  Try eating less during the day so you can still eat the bread you crave at night.

Health & Support Fainted Twice Today.... Oct 02 2008
00:28 (UTC)

Well I went to my doctor today and he told me I fainted because of my diet.  :(

He says that although I'm near the top of my healthy weight range, that is what is healthy for my body.  He said the reason why they have the range is because different things are healthly for different people.  He said there is no reason why anyone should be 300 pounds or anything like that.

Plus, since I'm trying to get pregnant I need to have a bit of extra weight on me at the begininng (within a healthy range) because many women lose weight in the first trimester.

It totally wasn't the answer I was looking for but I trust him.  Sigh.  After much debate we agreed 2000 a day is fine with exercise.  Sigh.  Damn.  I guess I'd rather stay my weight and not faint.  It just sucks that other people can be my height and lighter and not have problems.

Thanks for the advice everyone.

I went to a walk-in doctor on the way home from work yesterday.  He was an idiot.  He told me I passed out because of the sight of blood.  But the cut on my hand was TINY and I'm really not someone who gets grossed out by things like this.  When I donate plasma watch them put the needle in without feeling sick at all.  I also ripped stiches open on my breasts years ago after having a surgery to remove a lump, and I didn't get sick.  So his explaination didn't make any sense at all.  I don't think my fainting was serious, but I just wish I had an explaination that made sense so I could prevent this from happening again.

I already had today booked for work.  I still don't feel 100%.

I think 1600 calories is enoug for a day isn't it?  I'll never lose weight if I have to eat more then that.

I see my own doctor tomorrow.  He is going to yell at me because he didn't want me to go on this diet to begin with.  Sigh.

To me it sounds like your bordering on being too thin.  I think men like a bit of curves.  Also, make sure you stay healthy.  By the time an anorexic looks "too thin" permanent damage has been done to their organs.

But besides that, don't value yourself on the opinions of others.  Easier said then done... I know.

Weight Loss How many calories are you eating? Sep 23 2008

I've been on this diet for two weeks now with my husband.  I'm 5"6, 27 years old and 145 when I started.  Now I'm 141.  I've been eating 1400 calories a day and trying to workout at least 3 times a week.  I've also been trying to increase my activity on a regular basis such as taking the bike to the store, walking at night with my husband... yada. 1400 is really hard though!  I figure that I'll aim for 1400 but as long as I stay under 1600 (and do some activity that day) I'll be fine.  Yet, the second week of the diet I didn't lose anything :(  Sigh.

My husband is 25, 200 pounds when he started and 5"10.  He lost 6.5 pounds so far eating 1600 calories to begin with but then that was way to hard (and now from what I read here too low) and now he is eating 1800 and working out when I do.

In October he might get put back on shift work at his job though, and that will really make dieting together much more difficult.  Sigh.

Weight Loss I need more protein. Any ideas?? Sep 23 2008
04:19 (UTC)

You don't need more protein!  Why does everything think that?  The average north American diet has too much.  Do some research into the subject and you will find that if you eat too much protein you actually start to lose calcium.  That means your bones weaken and you are at risk of osteoporosis later in life!  That's painful and not very attractive.

Eat a balanced diet.  If your trying a low carb diet, note that you will lose weight quickly but its water not fat.  Also, your body needs carbs to perform physical activity... or feel good doing it.

Get a tablespoon (a real one for cooking and measuring not the kind people eat out of) and fill it with peanut butter.  Then use the peanut butter in the spoon to put on your bread.  Personally I was surprised that I usually only use half a tablespoon per slice.

I wouldn't weight it personally.  I weigh a lot of things, but that sounds like a pain in the butt to me.

I was always told it was good for you... then I looked at the calories when I started this diet two weeks ago and OMG!  At a local pizza chain in my area a single pizza slice is 700 calories!  Granted its huge but MY GOD!  I use to eat those on a regular basis.

If you ask for less cheese and eat a small amount you might be able to fit it into a calorie restricted diet, but then you still suffer the rest of the day for it.

It's hard.  OMG it's hard.

My husband is worse then me.  There is a product sold in Canada called Salba. Its a grain but its extreemly rich in fibre, omega 3's, antioxidents (blah blah... you get the drift) but it also helps you feel full.  It doesn't taste like anything but after a few days it started to gross me out so I stopped using it. If you chew it long enough you start to feel it expand in your mouth... weird.

My husband loves the stuff though.  He takes it straight out of a spoon or sprinkles it on his food.  Today he became extreemly grumpy and I couldn't figure out what was the matter.  Then I realized he didn't take any salba!  LOL!  It makes a huge difference for him.  Now I'm going to make sure he takes the stuff everyday.  In the US its sold under a different name but I have no idea what it is.  I saw that in another post.  I'm sure there are different name brands of the same thing too.

Anyways, I think this stuff is worth a try.
