Sounds like your weight isn't the problem at all. You don't sound like you're calling yourself fat (i assume you meant "having" fat and no muscle?), which is good, considering your numbers. If you're concerned about your frame not "holding" fat well, the answer is probably just doing some strength building or something to tone up muscle. I don't think dieting would be right for you, so try just eating enough fruits, veggies, protein, etc, and doing some crunches. Hope this helps, have a great week!

Congratulations, that's wonderful!

I absolutely love reading success stories. It makes me feel so optimistic.

I've lost 16%, starting at 190 and am now at 158.6, which puts me in the "overweight" range instead of "obese" as well.

Again, congrats. Thanks for posting this! It made my day.

Foods Acorn Starch?? Nov 25 2008

Ack, I feel silly. I found the package of acorn starch and it had the nutritional info. I didn't know it, but apparently my mom makes the dish at home. Thanks anywho.

Weight Loss Should I skip the Thanksgiving feast? Nov 24 2008
23:51 (UTC)

I agree completely with GI Jane. The biggest reason for which I am currently pursuing an ED-free lifestyle is the amount of isolation I impose on myself because of my fears. Thanksgiving is about being with your family and friends and sharing the love and comfort. If you miss out on that because you're afraid of screwing up, you'll regret it and grow to resent yourself. Just eat until you're full and stop, and focus more on the people around you than the food.

Weight Loss Opinions on this meal plan Nov 20 2008

If you lack the confidence to tackle the task of cooking whole meals, try something simple and healthy, like a sandwich.

I like sandwiches because they can be very healthy depending on what kind of ingredients you use, and they're very simple. Bread is kind of like pasta, without having to boil water. You can make one with fruit, veggies, or meat, on whole grain bread. One of my favorite things to eat for lunch is a grilled apple and swiss sandwich.

Your meal plan, as many have already pointed out, needs more fruits, grains, veggies and protein. And even if you can't cook, you can always learn. It's not brain surgery, and there are very easy things you can make. Take charge and pride in knowing what you're putting in your body! As for your snacks, why not go for a healthy alternative? Instead of shelling out a bunch of money on single serving snacks that will leave you hungry for more anyway, buy some fruit, like strawberries and bananas. They don't require any prep work! Or get some broccoli and boil yourself up a cup. It's less than half the calories, you'll feel fuller, and they're great for you! If you're worried about produce going to waste, there's always the frozen veggies section. Take a cup or two in tupperware to work and microwave them to tender goodness:)

Hope some of this helps. Good luck!

Vegetarian vegetarian/binge Nov 16 2008

I have to agree with onmyway--

I also don't wanna get into all the veg politics bs, because it differs with each case. I don't know the full details of your situation, but the word "binge" conjurs up ED connotations. And in such a case one may eat things completely outside of their norm. Many people, while binging, completely detach from the food itself. People can eat tubs full of butter, not needing the calories or even satisfying a craving. It sounds irrational and unusual, but it happens. And we're all human.

You should just think for yourself instead of trying to follow a formula for what makes you a vegetarian or an animal lover, etc. If you feel out of control while binging, you aren't making a rational choice, whereas in your daily life, you are deciding to be a vegatarian.

Weight Loss TOTM Question Nov 14 2008
21:57 (UTC)

I would say that it's just bloating from PMS. If you are positive that you've been working off the extra calories, and you haven't surpassed your intake enough to gain, just don't worry about it. So many times I've freaked out because of water retention, only to realize I'd actually lost weight anyway, by the following week.

Drink lots of water and maybe watch your sodium intake. Good luck!

Thanks for the advice. I might look into eating a low GI diet. It sounds like something anyone could benefit from. Just one question, though. Would following such a diet alter one's carb/fat/protein ratios?

And I think I will make an appointment to see a doctor about this problem. Hopefully my parents will help me out.

Thanks!

Weight Loss A Not-So-Unique Problem Oct 26 2008

I know what you're going through, in a sense. My mother never reads the nutritional information for ANYTHING. My parents and I are Korean immigrants, but my little siblings are growing up in America, which means they have much of the same tastebuds as their classmates. Since my mom isn't so good with western foods--(cake, spaghetti, whatever) she just buys whatever crap is cheap and available. We have tons of microwave dinners packed with sodium, preservatives and fat, bags and bags of potato chips, brownies, cookies...

Will power is a big part of it. So try to just eat your meals, and stay out of the kitchen or wherever the junk is as much as possible. And yeah, this is the same lame advice people hate each other for, but sometimes having a piece of fruit and a glass of water does help. Say you're craving a chocolate bar. Though it may be painful at first, once you've eaten an apple and washed it down, you might find that the initial sugar craving has ebbed significantly.

Gay Marriage: I'm for it.

Abortion: Keep it legal.

Obama: America's solution.

Mccain: If he gets elected and croaks, we'll be stuck with Palin.

Jesus: I think of him the way I think of Buddha. A role model.

Evolution :Yes.

Global Warming: Whether or not it's "real", we still need to stop polluting frivolously.

George W.: Can't wait til he's gone.

Sex Before Marriage: Whatever.

The Drinking Age: keep it the same. It's not like minors don't drink anyway, and it's not like they'll drink less if you lower it.

Pot: Legalize it. Tax it. Fix the damn economy.

The War: end it.

Meat: sure.

Tattoos: None.

The Devil: is hatred or indifference, be it to the well-being of ourselves or others.

Ghosts: I don't think I care.

Aliens: ???

Censorship: Just turn off your damn telly.

Magic: I LOVE magic!

Love: is good.

Religion: stay away from my laws, and it's all good.

Health & Support A Little More Sensitivity? Oct 20 2008

Though I don't condone rudeness or insensitivity, I partly agree with fidget. There is a huge difference between sensitivity and enabling. And not pointing out the obvious problem with still not consuming at least 1000 calories a day is enabling.

However, I think that tough criticisms can also cross the line. Especially when it comes from someone who thinks that there is only one path to recovery. I'm a recovering bulimic who has also suffered through bouts of anorexia over the years. The doctors and therapy never helped me, because my problem is my own, and the textbooks they depend on are not an easy diagram to my disorder.

I guess what I'm trying to say is that people are all different, and what one person may call a binge may be a triumph over irrational anxieties in another. The rigid belief system a recovered ed patient may have as a result of years spent in clinics or therapy won't always be a rational response when it comes to other people, just as how a non-ed person may make an insensitive remark without realizing to someone currently struggling.

Anyway. This isn't even about eating disorders specifically. People should just refrain from being rude in general. I mean, eating and exercise habits are very personal, and when doling out constructive criticism, one should be sure to handle the situation with finesse. You wouldn't tell a stranger on the street that all that ice cream is going straight to their thighs, would you? Or that those measly carrot sticks are a cry for help?

Weight Loss Do you ever feel like you're too far gone? Oct 07 2008

5 minutes of cardio is better than none at all.

I don't think "being too far gone" is even an issue, as long as you keep at it and just stay positive.

I'm only 18, and 5'0" tall. Just a few months ago, in August, I was at my highest weight ever-190 lbs. I also couldn't do more than a few minutes of cardio, and thought that I'd be obese and unhealthy forever. But I've already lost 22 pounds. And I intend to lose 48 more. I never thought it was possible, but it is if you stick with it. It's all about your attitude. Every little bit counts. Before you know it, you'll be reaping your rewards---more energy, elevated moods, and a body that looks and feels good.

A little additional piece of advice--when doing cardio, before you feel overwhelmed and need to get off, lower your heart rate by slowing down, and build up again. You'll probably be able to keep at it a lot longer if you don't feel flustered and exhausted. Good luck!

Health & Support How can I prevent myself from binging and purging? Sep 19 2008
00:07 (UTC)

Thanks. I live with my family so what food is in the house isn't up to me, but my problem has never been self-control. It's more of a coping mechanism, because I tend to suppress my anger. You're right about expressing my emotions...I think that would help a lot.
