lallaa; At 167cm and 61-62kg, your BMI states you are at 21 (which is a normal weight range). May I ask what your goal weight is that you are hoping to achieve? You stated 58kg, which i believe is sufficent. Dont become frustrated; sometimes it just needs adjustment and time to see results. At 16, I believe you need more calories than you are consuming. Teenagers need 2000 calories; minimum. I have learnt through my own journey of weight loss, that I lost weight by consuming MORE than less calories (& obviously consuming more healthy options). I also believe your binging is the result of such a low calorie amount for your age and activity level. You can also try increasing your fibre intake as well as protein to keep you fuller for longer. All the best! xx

| Weight Gain | carbs | Feb 18 2009 20:27 (UTC) |

Totally agree with the above. Along with that, carbohydrates help in the proper function of the brain as well as the body's muscles by transforming sugar into the energy your body truly needs. The body breaks them down into simple sugars, which is then absorbed into the bloodstream. As the sugar level rises in your body insulin is released. (Insulin is needed to move sugar from the blood into the cells, where the sugar can be used as a source of energy) When this process goes fast (with simple carbohyrates) you're more likely to feel hungry again soon. When it occurs more slowly, as with a whole-grain food, you'll be satisfied longer. These types of complex carbohydrates give you energy over a longer period of time. The carbohydrates in some simple carbohydrate foods cause the blood sugar level to rise more quickly than others. You're probably already on the right track if you are limiting simple sugars (such as candy, chocolate) and eating more complex carbohydrates (like vegetables, oatmeal, and whole-grain wheat bread). To my understanding, The daily intake for all carbohydrates is 310g (or as lala stated, 50%-60%). xx |

| Weight Gain | Calculating whats in your meals | Feb 18 2009 08:25 (UTC) |
9 |
I believe if you are already consuming what looks like a balanced diet, than there is no need for calculations. My reason for this is I feel strongly about "eating what you want, when you want". I feel that calculating is what leads on to obsession, therefore the beginning of a real problem. But if your going to track, dont track fruits and vegetables. There shouldnt be a limit (unless of course if your silly enough to want to live of it!). General rule of basic calculations are : Bread, Grain, Cereal and Pasta;
Fruits and Vegetables
Beans, Eggs, Lean Meat and Fish
OR: About 1 cup Green salad, frozen yogurt, medium piece of fruit, baked potato About 1/2 cup Cut fruit, cooked vegetables, pasta, rice About 1/4 cup Dried fruit snack pack, Large egg. About 3 oz: (Cassette Tape size) Meat, Poultry 1 tsp: (1 Dice) Margarine, spreads 1 Tbsp: (Thumb Tip) Mayonnaise, oils, dips

| Weight Gain | Weight relation to clothing sizes... | Feb 18 2009 08:08 (UTC) |

It really just depends on your body in terms of where you gain weight and how much will be deposited in that area. I second what Lala said- "You're not defined by the number in your jeans". Some clothes may fit tighter than others while there are things you may not be able to wear again. Its all apart of weight gain. Put it this way- wouldnt you love to have another shopping spree?! "do you all think I'll look/feel that much different after that?". You will look much healthier, much brighter and more energized. You wont look "scary", you'll just be another beautiful and healthy individual on this planet. In terms of how you feel, its really how YOU want to feel. Its your mentality towards your weight gain that will affect you emotions. Though I hope for your sake you will feel nourished, happy and healthy. With your old clothes you can do things like donate, give it away to your younger relations in your family or even be creative and make a bag, pencil case or makeup purse! (if you search on the web, im sure you'll find heaps of neat creative craft ideas!) xx |

| Weight Loss | too much water? | Feb 16 2009 09:20 (UTC) |

Yes, I would definatley be living proof that there is such thing as drinking to much water. In the worst stage of my ED, I was drinking litre after litre EVERY hour. One day, I collapsed on the floor and I woke up in emergency because of a severe electrolyte imbalance and tissue swelling towards my brain. You have to drink HEAPPS (yes, i mean heaps as in only living on water) for it be dangerous. Other than that, You should be fine. |

Of course this is bad! Any type of disordered eating is bad, whether it be anorexia, bulimia, chew and spit or compulsive exercise. Life is not ment to be a stuggle where you are battling with your mind. You should be able to eat what you want, drink what you want and sleep when you want without resulting in such behaviour. Like chrissy said above, walk away from the behavior while you still can. Correct me if im wrong, but it seems as if your chewing and spitting may be how you cope with stress, as well as the infulence created by your sister. My suggestion is to find another way to cope. Also, develop another outlook on food. Think of it as nourishing your body. Think of it as blood for your heart to keep on pumping. But in the end, it is only YOU who can change your habits. I also should say, you would benefit highly by talking to a professional about this issue. I hope whatever you decide to do, that you will steer in the right direction. It is only up to you and I hope the choice you make will be a good one! xx

You have a FANTASTIC body! Be proud of what you have. Its great for a female to have some flesh on her, not just paper flat with their rib-cages sticking out. You have a distorted perception about your body image. Everybody is different and there is not one body that is the same. We all have different bone structures, metabolisms as well as calorie needs. Realistically, can you REALLY see yourself maintaining at 1300-1500 calories for the rest of your life? I don’t think so. A diet should be a lifestyle change, not a battle with your mind and body. I do believe you need to eat more. At least 2000 calories. You are on the verge of an ED, and I suggest talking to somebody before your perception manifests out of control. Be happy who you are and what you have. Think "Im beautiful", "I love my body". If you don’t love yourself, how can you expect anybody else to? No more losing weight missy! .. Good luck! xx

| Health & Support | Breakout | Feb 15 2009 06:54 (UTC) |
4 |
Breakouts are usually in realtion to your hormones. You'll find that your hormones are regularing and becoming more active, therefore oily skin is produced. It sounds like a hormonal issue, and you may soon find that you will get your periods. Women usually get breakouts the week before their period in concentrated areas like the forehead and on the chin. Taking certain medications can also trigger acne. For instance, When a birth control pill contains only progestins, it may make acne worse. Acne is a possible side effect of other medications as well.
Have you changed what beauty products you are using? Using the wrong products on your hair and skin can aggrivate your forehead/face. When buying products to be used on the skin or hair, look for ones labeled “non-comedogenic” or “non-acnegenic.” This means that they are less likely to cause acne. Other than that, Acne also may be warning of an underlying medical condition. When a woman’s acne is accompanied by excessive facial hair, thinning hair/bald patches on the scalp as well as irregular periods, it may be a sign of polycystic ovaries (a condition that causes cysts to develop in the ovaries) or adrenal hyperplasia (a group of adrenal gland disorders). For your case, this is most likely not your issue. I guess other than that, make sure you get plenty of sleep and continue to eat a well balanced diet! (foods that contain vitamin A might I add! Best of luck! |

| Health & Support | ED recoverers: post your worst ED memory | Feb 15 2009 02:25 (UTC) |
52 |
My worst memories. Im in recovery now, so when i look back at these times, It motivates me to move 200 steps quicker. 1- When i first battled an ED, i was filling myself up with A LOT of water. I was drinking litre after litre every hour. It got the point where I drank SO MUCH I collapsed when I was in the shower and when I woke up I was in emergency because of a severe electrolyte imbalance and tissue swelling towards my brain. 2- I lost many relationships. I had no friends. I was defensive and constantly upset. I became distant from my family. The ones I loved most wanted nothing to do with me. My mother went from being my best friend to my worst enemy. It was like a war of destruction. It got to the point where I ended up leaving school to be even more independant, because even the teachers could see something was not right. I look back and think, I was running from my problems. 3- I noticed I was constantly cold, even in 30 degree weather, and yet my fingers and toes would be blue and I would be covered in atleast 2 jackets to keep warm. 4- I am an apprentice hairdresser who studies at TAFE (its a type of educational school for specific jobs..) and because of my distort look and fragile appearance, my apprenticeship was placed on hold and I was refused entry to continue my education until I looked "healthy". Even though i felt on top of the world, the people described my energy as "running on adrenaline". My job was on the line (yes.. he was going to fire me). 5- I remember nights I would wake up crying because my chest felt like a knife had been stabbed right through it, and I was scared even to cry for help because i knew i just couldnt go on.. That was my wake up call.. |

We all have our own coping strategies, and this is your own coping strategy for your feelings. It may not be 100% healthy for you, yet there are many in your own shoes who can relate to this post. Food tends to be the 1st choice for many in your situation. Sugar tends to be the centre to numbing the feelings of pain, guilt and hurt. Over-eating/binging is what distracts you, and tends to be your comfort when nobody else is around. Im sure everybody has experienced a self-induced emotional beast that has been released at some time. It’s just human. I know that during my eating disorder, I used emotional eating as a way to comfort myself. I felt it numbed a part of my life for a minute and that for one second I was able to escape reality and free myself. Then of course.. reality kicks in. So even though my past situation is different to yourself, I completely understand! A rubber band: Keep a rubber band or elastic around your wrist, so every time you feel the urge to binge or over-indulge, whack it on yourself. I don’t usually suggest this, but when everything else fails, you will be surprised it works! Exercise: Go for walk. Buy a skipping rope. Kick a ball. Run a block. Hire some exercises movies/DVDs. Pump up the music and dance like an idiot. Exercise has been known to release endorphins which may be why many are addicted to exercise! Keep a Journal: Write your emotions and feelings down. Get it off your chest. If nobody’s there to listen, at least your journal can be your crying comfort! Take a bath: Relax and evaluate your situations. Soak in a nice warm tub (with lots of bubbles and a couple of magazines!) to take your mind of things. Once your calm, you may be able to see situations a little better and cope with it in a different manner. We are all here for your support. Keep smiling love :) ! xx

| Weight Gain | Oyy....okay. | Feb 14 2009 22:49 (UTC) |

I just want to say, congratulations in taking the huge step in gaining weight. It is definatley a scary yet rewarding journey. Your body deserves everything you decide to consume. You should never feel the desire to restrict or compensate for the calories you consume. Your here to gain to a healthy weight, and no matter how it gets done, its not a choice its a MUST! You deserve to be happy, healthy and motivated. I agree with lala's post above. Try to evaluate your overall meal plan during the day and ensure that you are getting enough of the essential vitamins and minerals. You are most likely going to find out you are consuming to many carbs and not enough proteins and fats. You may also find out that you may be having your last meal too early before your bed time, which makes you want to wake up and munch on something as your body signal is telling you your hungry. Everybody has different calorie needs, and you may find that the calories you are consuming is not enough. Many weight gainers find they need atleast 4000 calories + for weight gain. This is completley normal. Your ED wants you to feel this way. Fight the urges and give it a good kick in the butt. Enjoy a piece of chocolate, sip a milkshake or have a bag of lollies once in a while. You dont need to be healthy 100% of the time, you deserve a treat just like everybody else. Its just human. Do this for yourself. Your life. Your health. You may not appear sick on the outside, but theres a lot going on inside you cannot see. Not only am i here for your support but so are many others on here. Good luck x0x

| Health & Support | How do you keep from overeating when youre stressed? | Feb 13 2009 21:22 (UTC) |
|
I think the trick is to get your mind off food, as well as eating something little every 2-3 hours to keep your sugar levels up to minimise your desire to munch on something. Relax: Throughout the day, take "mini-breaks". Sit down and get comfortable. Slowly take in a deep breath; hold it; and then exhale very slowly. At the same time, let your shoulder muscles droop, smile, and say something positive like, "I am r-e-l-a-x-e-d" or "Today is beautiful". Be sure to get sufficient rest at night. Quiet Time: Balance your family, social, and work demands with special private times. Unwind by taking a quiet stroll, soaking in a hot bath, watching a sunset, or listening to calming music. Talk to Friends: Socializing is a great medicine. Daily doses of conversation, regular social engagements, and occasional sharing of deep feelings and thoughts can reduce stress quite nicely. Exercise: If you feel the need to nibble on something, take a walk first. Try aerobics, walking, jogging, dancing, or swimming. Water!: Dont confuse hunger with thirst! Get organised: Develop a realistic schedule of daily activities that includes time for work, sleep, relationships, and recreation. Use a daily "thing to do " list. Get yourself a diary/planner to use your time and energy efficiently.

| Weight Gain | ED recovery... question about calorie increases | Feb 13 2009 08:50 (UTC) |
4 |
In recovery it doesn’t matter where or how you get your calories, as long as it gets done. In my personal opinion, I believe just biting the bullet to 1200 calories and working your way up from there. Cut down on the fruits and vegetables and replace them with other things that contain fats/protein such as peanut butter, full fat yogurt, full fat milk and nuts/seeds. Eat more of the foods which are high cal and less density. In recovery, it’s NORMAL not to always eat clean. Challenge yourself and have a piece of chocolate, a slice of cake or a frozen ice-cream. Eating less than 1200 calories damages your metabolism. In all honesty, you’re going to gain weight, whether at 1500 calories or 3000 calories. It shouldn’t matter what number you gain weight on, your main focus should be on reaching a target weight. By the time you gain back to a healthy weight your body should have balanced out and you'll find you can eat a substantial amount of calories and maintain. In my experience, it took me a couple of months for my stomach to get used to eating bigger amounts. It takes strength, courage and motivation to pull through it. I guess it is the daunting stage, but once it’s over you can push further. Why do you take so long to eat a meal? Not that enjoying your food is bad, but 1-1.5 hours sounds a bit extreme. I don’t really know much about what you could do, maybe read a cook book while you’re eating? (All the yummy pictures may inspire you to eat more Best of luck xx

| Weight Gain | AM I eating enough? | Feb 13 2009 08:32 (UTC) |
6 |
Are you serious? That isnt even CLOSE enough! I describe this as a rabbit food diet. There is absolutely NO balance of fat/protein/carbs. Minimum 2500 calories. Theres too much fibre and not enough of the real essential vitamins and minerals. You are barely getting any iron and calcium either. I suggest seeing a nutritionist, as well as a professional. You definitely need help. Theres a difference in being "healthy" and "obsessed". Im afraid you’ve crossed the obsession line. A nutritionist will devise a plan with BALANCED meals as well as making sure you are getting the essential requirements. I suggest reading the following stickys on this forum.
Best of luck. |

As much as i would love to say "YES!", unfortunately life isn't that easy. If only we could pick and choose where we gain weight.. In order to gain muscle, you also need to gain fat. It is impossible to just gain muscle on its own. From my understanding, muscle is built up overtime which is why body builders (for example) fuel themselves with LOTS AND LOTS of nutrition, and achieve the bodies they want. If you exercise and deprive yourself of the necessary foods, than you are most likely to lose muscle mass. In terms of gaining weight in one specific area, you cannot pick and choose where the weight goes. Women tend to gain weight on the buttocks/thighs as well as a bit in the tummy area first while men predominately gain in the upper abdomen/stomach region, its just nature. It also depends on your body structure/figure (apple, pear, hour-glass etc..) Since you have described your activity level, I would suggest doubling your calorie intake (if you haven't already done so), as well as slightly cutting down your exercise level. I believe your face would be one of the last places you would gain weight. Just achieve what needs to be done and let nature take its course. You'll find that you will fill out naturally |

| Weight Gain | Vent.... kinda frustrated/unhappy | Feb 11 2009 10:55 (UTC) |

I can honestly relate to your post, and I would like to tell you, you are not alone *hugs*. It takes time and adjustment to get used to the amount of calories you are eating, especially if you don't have much support around. I used to freak out if i ate over 1500 calories.. now I cant imagine eating below that number! I currently take in a minimum of 2500 calories, and I admit that scares me. But I think realistically outside that little ED voice in my head. I guess my advice to you is start to think of calories in a positive way, and even create a list of why calories are good for you. I always read an article of why 2500 calories are the bare mininium for weight gainers when times get rough. Its my encouragement to "keep moving forward". I can also relate to your meal consumption. I tend to eat majority of my calories at night/dinner time. I also totally agree to how you feel but we feel that way because of the ED. In the end your body needs fuel, and it doesn't matter how or when you get it, as long as its done! Don't worry about your sugar intake at the moment. Focus on better health and achieving a normal weight. After that is done, than focus on maintenance and balance. Of course proper nutrition is important when gaining weight, but at the same time, I believe we are in the best position of all! (In terms of eating whatever we want, whenever we want Don't be annoyed with yourself. Your not alone and there are many people out there walking along the long winding journey with you. Be strong and hold it out.. Best of luck lovely and im here if you need more support xx

It shouldnt matter how many calories are in cough drops. Santonacci is right in saying your body needs the extra calories. However if it bothers you that much, i guess you could always make this: Honey and Lemon cold reliefBoil some water, pour into a mug, add the lemon juice and stir in two teaspoons of honey (or to taste). I dont know how many calories are in this.. but it sure helps me! Other than that.. bed rest helps best! Get well soon lovely.. xx |

| Foods | Foods that build immunity... | Feb 10 2009 10:18 (UTC) |
4 |
I think the best think that can build you immune system when your sick is rest.. seriously. However here are a list of foods that are known for their immune building properties: LOTS OF FRUIT: Apricots, Avocados, BERRIES (blackberries, blueberries, strawberries, cranberries), mangos etc. They are full of antioxidents and vitamin C, an essential immune system builder. Especially take into consideration of citrus fruits such as grapefruit, oranges, tangerines and lemons. As the saying goes; An apple a day keeps the doctor away! Selenium is another essential mineral that is very important to human health. It is essential to proper immune system function. Did your mother ever cook you warm chicken soup on a very cold winters day? That is because chicken is another good source of selenium and is one of the BEST foods that build your immune system strength. Other great sources include tuna, red snapper, lobster, shrimp, whole grains and sunflower seeds. If your a mushroom lover, then your in luck. The beta glucans found in edible mushrooms increased white blood cell counts. (White blood cells are primary infection fighters). Garlic is another great immune-boosting food since garlic is known to stimulate the growth of white cells and increases the efficiency of antibody production. Garlic can also act as an antioxidant that reduces the build-up of free radicals in the bloodstream. You also need Omega-3 fatty acids. The omega 3 fatty acids in flax oil and fatty fish such as salmon, tuna, and mackerel act as immune boosters by increasing the activity of phagocytes (the white blood cells that eat up bacteria). Essential fatty acids also protect the body against damage from over-reactions to infection. Drink green tea and white tea. Both contain antioxidants which boost immune function. Other than that, I would suggest to stress less, relax, take a multi-vitamin if necessary and get BEST REST! Good luck and get well! |

| Health & Support | anorexia recovery trying to maintain at 1650 | Feb 10 2009 09:08 (UTC) |
6 |
Babe I'm in recovery also and I'm pretty sure deep down you know that you still need to gain. Your BMI is about 16-17, considering a normal BMI is about 20. 1650 is not a number to maintain on, realistically. If you are serious about gaining, you should eat back the calories you burn off. Real gainers eat ATLEAST 2500 calories. But since your exercising, you need more. WAY more. All you are doing is burning off the calories you are consuming. I would suggest seeking some attention outside of these boards. A professional would defiantly benefit you. You clearly are struggling to do this yourself and an inpatient as the doctor suggested would be highly beneficial to someone in your position. I know it is hard, but we all have to bite the bullet at some time. You are young and have a lot ahead of you, and you need to do something about it before it is too late. Believe me. I can never have children. Why? Because I was too stubborn and too caught up in being "thin" that I ignored nourishing myself well. Now I have to live with the consequence for the rest of my life. Have you sat down and really thought about what this could do to you down the track? Do not play with your health, you will realise later on how stupid this all really is. You need to find yourself a hobby and occupy yourself with that. Get your mind off food, off calories. Think of food as nourishing your body. Gain a positive attitude. If there is a support group for eating disorders around your area, join that. But as I stated above, you clearly are struggling to do this yourself and you need to the professionals to give you are good boost. The thoughts you have stated in your post project the voice of an ED. Low calorie recipies, compulsive exercise, trying to maintain on a low body weight.. Its all in association with your ED. Aim towards great health and dont give up. Attack your fear foods. Be strong, stick it out, and live life to its fullest. Theres more to life than a body image.. xx |

| Weight Gain | Weight Gainers: What did YOU eat today? | Feb 10 2009 07:10 (UTC) |
2,022 |
Hello All! I’ve been a little lurker around these boards for some time now, so I thought I’d come out of my turtle shell and introduce myself! My names Anita but you can call me nita if you like. All of you have all been such a great inspiration to keep gaining, not to mention the great food ideas (even though I’m half way across the world to some and there are foods which appear new to me lol). My foodies today: Breakfast: 2 weetbix with soymilk topped with pepitas, glass of soymilk with HEAPS of milo, frozen mango Snack: Mini dried fruit snack box, full fat yogurt. Lunch: Hardboiled egg on wholemeal and seed bread, five seed bar Snack: Another mini dried fruit box, full fat yogurt. Snack: Glass of soymilk topped with HEAPS of milo.. again Dinner: Large plate of chilli pasta with honey seasoned meaty chucks and some veggies..
So ive got a few questions id like to ask. 1- Do any of you actually exercise at the moment or are you remaining sedentary? If so, what does you routine consist of? (The reason I ask this is because apart from my full time job as a hairdresser, I also model. Yes, I admit it is not the best industry to be in. As you can imagine, I am required to keep up a toned image).
2- Just like every other female, I have lost my period. I would like to know if it is safe to induce it, as in birth control or other natural remedies? Or would it be safe to “let it come naturally”?
Oh and Id just like to say.. Lalabanana.. LOVING THE RED HAIR!
Keep eating up everyone!
