Long time no see....   OK confession time-- I kinda fell off the wagon.  I had some health issues earlier in the summer, which turned out fine, but then I hurt my knee...  last week I completed a 3 week, 3 X per week stint w/ the chiropractor.  Now the knee is fixed and I'm ready to get back to running!

Oh and since I'm confessing my husband and I went away for our 1st anniversary August 12th and I gave myself permission to eat/drink whatever I wanted ...  um... I'm going to stop eating as of today and begin logging my food again.  Jeez ... you'd think I'd gotten past that behavior, but no.

Fresh slate.  New start ... here I go!   I haven't gotten on the scale and I'm not going to until Friday so I don't get too bummed out.    I hope the damage isn't too bad, but my tight fitting cloths tell me don't hold your breath!

Last Friday night I came out of a dead sleep screaming in pain? I don't know what was worse, the pain, or the fear of what was causing it.  Bill was standing next to me as I lay on the bathroom floor having spasms and trying to breath ? the pain was so bad it took my breath away.  Bill was holding the phone ready to dial 911 ?  After 2 'spasms' of pain that lasted about 10 minutes each it stopped and I went back to bed.

Saturday we went to the emergency room and I told them I'd had a horrible pain in my chest -- next thing I know I'm on an EKG machine, getting chest x-ray's etc.  The nurses kept asking do you feel ok?  Any reason your heart rate is so low...  it was SCARY for both of us!  Turns out I probably passed a gallstone!  Even tho I've never had ANY gallbladder or digestion problems before!!  Evidently, some people have a very low heart rate and I'm one of them... the Dr. said I was text book gallbladder diagnosis... but the low heart rate threw them off at first.   I'm having an ultrasound on Friday July 6th.

So yesterday I go to the dentist for a cleaning and after the hygienist is done my dentist comes in as always to have a look-see ? and he does his a check of my tongue and feels my neck ( I think that?s for tongue/throat cancer) like he has done 2 x a year for the 5 years I?ve been going to him? then he feels the front of my neck again and asks is there any reason my thyroid is enlarged?  And  tell him about my issue with my gallbladder (we think? haven?t had the ultrasound yet) and my low heart rate (which the ER doc had assumed was maybe just normal for me cuz the EKG was fine?)  and the dentist says don?t be alarmed by your thyroid feels  ?thick?  and I should see my doctor.  I?m immediately worried!!  He says hey I?m only a dentist, but I do a 100 of these exams a week, and have probably done 10 ?15 on you and something is different.  Then he says I wouldn?t run till you see the doctor cuz thyroid can effect your heart rate? he says don?t panic, and he?s not a doctor? just get it checked.

Unbelievable.    I see my regular physician Monday at 8:30 a.m.   I went running Monday night and I?d planned to run this afternoon, cuz I?m leaving work early, then workout w/ Jen tomorrow a.m.   I feel fine, I?ve really gone back and forth all day saying the heck w/ it, an easy 2 mile run won?t kill me? then I get nervous.  Then I feel so damn guilty cuz I have had so little running going on 2 weeks now!!  But I?ve only got to wait till Monday? so I?ll cancel my appt w/ my trainer tomorrow and just deal with it.   I find it hard to even log into C-C cuz it?s a harsh reminder that I?m not working out and it bums me out to feel like I?ve stopped making progress? and am backsliding.

Sorry to be a downer.  However I will be back hopefully the doctor gives me a clean bill of health and I?ll be running Monday night.   And hopefully I get a clean ultrasound next Friday

[sorry this is long its a cut/paste from my journal]

I will be back.

Last week did not end well?   I didn?t run or do any other exercise from Friday - Monday (a little sick and a lot busy).  I finally got back to it Tuesday night and ran for 40 minutes -- I don't know how far I went, I lost track after 2.5 miles when I decided to add in a really long, steep hill!  I felt GREAT!  Wed I ran about 3.5 miles ? I was a little tired, but ok.

Yesterday I planned to run a pretty & popular 5k route near my office -- so even tho my legs, especially my left knee area, felt a little stiff I went after work cuz it was a gorgeous day ... I figured I?d loosen up once I got going.   Oh man, it sucked  :O(    I could not get into a good running rhythm or even out my breathing.  I ended up running at a slow pace stopping to walk here and there - I probably walked a 1/2 mile, or more, of the route.  I gotta say it really bummed me out.   I'm taking today off cuz I've got my trainer tomorrow a.m. and I want to give my old legs a good rest so I can get in a strong, long run with her.

I hope everyone had a good week.  My work is rather cyclical and I?m hitting my monthly slow down time? so I?ll be able to read more on C-C next week.

Happy weekend runners!

Hello Runners,

Busy week here and not much online time.   I did make time to run, Tues, Wed & Thurs tho!  Play tennis w/ my superfit hubby.  Funny thing is the reason I began this whole lifestyle change was to be able to do fun physical activities together w/out me konking out!  We haven't played tennis together since 2 summers ago when I started putting on weight...    so this is a little victory!

have a great weekend everyone!  I hope to be able to get some computer time Sat or Sun a.m. to read some posts!

happy running!

way to go inci_vinci

Jillithan - Now that I know I can run 3 miles (or further...) I don't care if I'm having one of those days where I'm a little tired and feel the need to walk.... I'm just happy to be getting healthy and stronger!

erin I run consecutive days and it hasen't bothered ... I do make sure to do an 'easy' (shorter or slower) run if I've done a tough (longer/faster) run the day before.

Friday I unintentionally ran a 5K!!  I ran 1.6 to meet my sister to walk the 5k route, she wasn't there and I was cold and afer 25 minutes had to pee!  So I started running the 1.6 back to my car ...  and run into my sister walking towards me!  She misunderstood our meetup spot!  ... I had to pee so ran hard on the 1.6 back to my car.  LOL!!   It was a nice route that I've always wanted to run, but never could before!  I plan to go back to run it for time this week!   Saturday I did intervals w/ my trainer and lots of strength training.

Oh...  and I'm into the 5's --  159.5!!!   Yeah!!!

Jillithan ? it happens!  I felt that way Wed night ? every step was hard!!  Per my husband, a life long runner, its normal to have a tough day where for some reason its just HARD!

Zarelha ? At the end of March my ankle was in tough shape ? then I got my nifty new Saucany?s and that did the trick!  I definitely would make an effort to get new shoes!

Inci_vinci -  cheers back at cha and let us know how the HIIT goes ?

Katefafa ? good luck with your aches and pains ? jeez your hurting all over!  Feel better!  (and congrats on your sub-180 and 25lbs loss!)

Tomorrow:  Run w/ my trainer & do whatever she tells me!  :O)

Hi Runners!

Ran 3 miles Monday on the treadmill ... then planned to do a 'slow 2 miles' Tuesday outside -- I ran the 2 miles in 17:40 which for me is an AWESOME time!  I was so happy I ran another 1/2 mile!  I did 5K w/ my trainer outside last night in 27 minutes and part of that was a very steep hill....   I'm feeling so strong the last month or so and I think the key is consistency -- running at least 4 days a week sometimes 5 has made the difference.  My goal had been run 3 miles in under 30 -- Goal Achieved!

My new goal is to be able to run 4 miles in a decent time, about 40 minutes or less...

Thanks Jenka for the Hal Higdon link!  Jeez he sure has a lot of info there... I bookmarked it to read when I've got a little time...

Jillithan -- not to contridict pozesara cuz she's given me some good advice in this thread ... but I 2nd night's opinion.   I got a Proforma treadmill about 10 years ago-  thats the Sears brand and I bought one of the cheapest models -- $400-$500.  I'm still using it today -- sure its had loooooooooooong periods where it went unused - but I've also moved a few times and it was in storage twice and survived.  It keeps me chugging along and sometimes my husband too!

I ran outside last night & planned an easy 2 mile run (Tues is 'easy workout' day) .... boy was I shocked when I looked at my watch!!  I did 2 miles in 17:40!! That's 8.7 minute miles!  And, I wasn't even overly tired/winded...  I was so excited I kept running at a slow jog ... 2.6 miles in 24:50 minutes!

Ya know I started running in March, and more seriously in May ... I am sincerely amazed how much stronger my body is in just over a month.   If anyone had told me that my 40's would be the strongest and most physically active of my life, since childhood/teen years I'd have told them they were nuts!

I basically ran a 5K on Saturday morning and it felt great!  My trainer and I took a slightly different outside route that I suggested ? with 2 KILLER hills!  We did just over 3 miles in 30 minutes and about a mile of that was steep hills!!  And, it was hot and humid.  I haven?t felt such accomplishment since I did the 8K a few weeks ago.  Pozesara I tried the pushing breath out suggestion and it helped a lot, especially toward the end!

I?ve hit a weight plateau (160-161) and its got me a little bummed ? last week I only worked out 3 days instead of 5, but the 3 I did were really good workouts? but not enough to move the scale downward I guess!  This week will be different!  I didn?t run this morning as planned (I?m having a tough time switching to a.m. runs!) ? I?ll be running after work per usual tonight.  Gonna try for 3 miles!   I?m also going to try to 100% of my calories ? that always helps me to stay on track and lately I?ve been a little lazy with that.  Do you use the CC food log Jillithan?  If not give it a try ? ?logging? my calories keeps me more aware of what I?ve consumed, and keeps me honest too!

Welcome Susan and RoseLex!  Happy Running!

Oh and Katefafa ? congrats on your falling pants!!  ;O)

Congrats Lindyb !!! That's a great time!!

Same thing happened to me when I bought a running watch a few weeks ago!!  I used to set my treadmill for a 12 minute pace, then I got  the watch & my 1st outdoor run ran 2 miles in 21 minutes!

Now I even wear my watch on the treadmill and look at that instead of the display!

Pozesara ? 4 miles in 43 is still a great time!  And going to 4.5 that?s a long run!  I TOTALLY think you can complete a dualathon!  Go for it!   And, I?m going to try that breathing out method on my run tonight?

Jillithan ? I just began focusing on better stretching & warmup jogging before my runs.  I realized that since I?ve started running harder I needed extra warmup to get ready to ?go!?.  Its helped!  ?I?m w/ you on changing your usual running days ? tomorrow is my 1st a.m. run at 5:45 ? next week I?ll do Monday & Friday.  (the holiday this past Mon screwed me up).  Its daunting to me too to change a routine that?s been working for me!

Shoutouts and Wecomes!! to XjocelynX87 ~~  Inci_vinci  ~~ and Better_thanb4 ~~  Good luck to all !!

Welcome also to Anjelab75 ? Re: your questions regarding food & water -- I?ll give you my personal preferences.  I mostly run after work so on my drive home I eat some low fat Triskets, apple or banana and drink 16oz bottle of water ? I run about a ½ hour snacking.  I keep a squirt bottle of water on my treadmill for sipping and finish the bottle during my cooldown walk. I ran outside last Saturday and it was hot & humid so I took a bottle of water w/ me.  I eat dinner as soon as I can after running, about 7:30 pm.

Zarelha ? congrats on the 1.4 loss and welcome back!

Deejib -  3 lbs is fantastic!!!  Good for you!!

As for me... a busy long weekend and kid stuff did me in!!  I only ran Sat a.m. but had a GREAT interval session w/ my trainer last night.  I felt like I could do anything she asked!  And she commented that I looked really strong throughout!!  I feel great today and will be doing a 3 mile run outside tonight.

Happy running!

Nicole --   Congrats on your run!!   The signs from Heather made me smile!!  What a great idea!!

Sweetjaneeee   -- whooo hooo for you!  Keep up the good work!

Missryan ? my best friend is a lifelong runner and has run a bunch of marathons and she swears by Saucony.  I recently got myself a pair on sale at a running store for $45 and I?m very happy with them.  .

My Mantra:  ?Holy Mary Mother of God?  --  I?m not particularly religious (I think the 12 yrs of Catholic school did me in LOL) yet for some reason this is the phrase that repeats in mind when the running gets tough.  Strange? but it works!   Jenca I think I?m going to borrow ?Looking Good, Feeling Great? ? I like that one!

Running Attire (sorry if this is too girly for a runners post   ;o) :  I bought Danskin running shorts w/ a built in panty at Walmart for $9.93 and a short sleeve top that ?wicks? the sweat away, about $10.00.  They wore well and washed up nicely too.  I'd paid about $30 for Underarmour & Nike shorts and for the $$ I was really happy with the quality and wear of Danskin.  I went back today and bought a few more shorts & shirts and running bras.

-- I?ve had a few unintential days off from running.  I ran Saturday morning and then had a super busy weekend.  I?m running tonight outside and aiming for 3 miles/30 minutes.  I planned to begin my Mon/Fri a.m. runs before work, but the holiday screwed me up.  This Friday will be my first a.m. run.

Thanks pandajenn for starting this thread!

Oh, and ?Hi? to the ?learn to run? thread lurkers too!  ;o)

My name is Elagain AKA Ellen from Westport, MA by way of Providence, RI ? I?m 44 yrs old.   I began working out with a personal trainer twice a week on 3/2/07 ? my 1st workout she had me run 5 minutes on the treadmill and kept upping the minutes weekly, plus we do about a ½ hour of strength training.  I ran outside for the 1st time on 3/31 and ran 1 mile w/out stopping, but I injured my ankle.  I was sidelined for a week, then went on vacation ? long story short, April kinda sucked training-wise.

The last week in April I got back on track and kicked it up!  I?d run 2.5 miles w/out stopping a few times and 3 miles one time when then I ran my first race the ?Westport Run for the Water? -- 8K on May 12th ?  I finished with a time of 51:54 ? whooo hoooo!   I am super proud of running all 5 miles! :O)

Now I can consistently run 3 miles in 30-35 minutes depending on whether its an a.m. or p.m. after work run?

Goals:        &nb sp;  run 3 miles/30 minutes or less every time

&nb sp;           &nb sp;    Add some distance and be able to run 5 miles w/out dying!

P.S    I agree with the other posters ? its all mental most of the time.  When I?m w/ my trainer I always do better than when I?m on my own.  Finishing an 8k w/ a respectable time made me realize I can do more!  Now I have to ?just do it?

I've only been running a couple of months - I'm up to 3 miles in 30-35 minutes and every time I start out whether outside or on the treadmill in the beginning its hard to catch my breath (I was a pack a day + smoker and now smoke 2-4 a day and I'm 44)

Per my personal trainer -- Everyone feels this way at the beginning of a run -- its normal, so relax.  Concentrate on breathing in and out at a steady pace and you'll get past it...   good luck!

Hello Runners!

I?ve been SUPER busy w/ work and family the last week and haven't been on C-C too much.  I gotten my runs in tho! I?m very happy with where I am at, consistently running 3 miles in 30-33 minutes.

Next week I start gettiing up a 1/2 hour earlier on Mon & Fri to run before work.  I hear this gives you lots of a.m. energy -- And, its a drain doing it every weeknight....  I've been feeling like all I do is work-commute-workout-eat-shower-sleep!  Hey, if nothing else I'll reduce my showers down to 1 a day!

Sdsubrandi ? I feel the same way a lot of time!  I don?t ?want? to work out I ?have? to, because I need to loose weight.  Lately tho, I?ve been feeling stronger and I?m running faster -- when I don't feel like working out I tell myself ?its only 30 minutes!  No time at all?   And, it isn?t?. since I?ve worked up to running the 3 miles in 30 minutes I find the thought of running is not so bad, sometimes I'm even looking forward to it because I kno how good I'll feel afterwards.  After my run ... I talk myself into some situps, pushups, for 15 minutes...  I find the getting going is the toughest part, then its all good!

Pandajenn19  - a runners club sounds great to me! I haven?t read the cycle post, but I like being a ?part? of something for motivation.

Deejib ?  And? I?ll be in this group too!  I can run 3 miles in about 30 minutes if I?m fresh -- most of my runs begin about 6/6:30 pm after work, so I?m tired from the day and a little slower, about 33 minutes.  So, I vote for faster times, but if the majority wants distance, that's cool too.  I'm in!

Jillithan -  Try not to let that *#($!@  scale get you down ?  I have been at this since 3/2 eating 1200 calories a day weekdays, and close to that weekends... plus working out an average of 5 days a week -- I?m down 9 lbs.  ..... I expected to be down at least 15 lbs by now!!  Whatever!! I feel better and have sooooooo much more energy!  My butt has visibly improved (per my husband ;o) -- I?ve lost inchs all over...  my face has gotten thinner ? my skin looks healthier from the exercise and all the water.  Try to think of the cumulative effects?  I too was letting my success be ruled by the #?s on the scale and recently have tried to let it go?  the scale will begin moving for you!  Keep up the good work!!  You will be rewarded!

Night ? nice pix!  You have a beautiful family!!
