I am sure the Secret Service was as prepared as possible with several people to watch, and those are just the ones with the guns!  Certainly spreads the coverage a little thinner than they would like, I am sure.

People openly carrying weapons in protest are not the ones to worry about for the most part. I would wager that they didn't even have ammo.

But that point aside - if the law in Arizona protects their right to mingle outside the 'safe zone' specified by the Secret Service, then they are perfectly within their rights as citizens.

Bush wouldn't allow protestors to be within view of the media in his day - talk about facism.

I wouldn't bet on the ammo thought-the idiot that had the gun strapped to his leg the other day made a point of saying "how stupid it would be to carry it if it weren't loaded" when asked that question.  And it was that in connection with his scary "tree of liberty" sign he held-the same quote Timothy McVay wore on his shirt the day of the OKC bombing.

Totally creepy.  I really don't see a purpose for anyone to have an AK-47, unless it's some kind of compensation for some insecurity, if you get my drift.   I am from a family of hunters, but we would feel no threat at all to our constitutional rights if automatic weapons as a whole were banned.

Moonikins is spot on-and I, as very middle aged gray haired woman (Ok -with a streak of pink) know about Burning Man- only because my children followed in my semi hippie footsteps.

Actually creationism is not a theory, because it makes no predictions that could be validated or invalidated by experiment. By definition, it is not science. So if you want to teach it in school in a class about religion, fine, but you have to include *all* religions, since I think just about everyone would agree we don't want our public schools promoting only certain religions. And now your school district is bankrupt, to say nothing of the fact that the curriculum would take decades just to scratch the surface. Which was the whole point of Pastafarianism in the first place.

Anyway, speaking of evolution, who's going to Burning Man? *raises hand timidly*

Excellent post. Bolding is mine. Creationism should never be taught in science class. It could be offered as part of a elective on world religions. There would need to be a unit of that class that discussed creationism stories of the main world religions, comparing and contrasting them.

However, I think there is a whole segment of the population that really does want only one creation story taught in the schools and I'm sure you can guess which one that is.

By the way, what is Burning Man?

I believe in evolution (and gravity if we are going on record) -and God!  Go figure.  They are not mutually exclusive unless one is a fundamentalist.

An excellent piece from the paper just today.  What he said!

Health & Support addicted to the scale. help? Jun 29 2009

I also just ditched the scale.  Made long term recovery more of a lifestyle plan instead of a hourly/daily "playing with the numbers" game...it's hard though.  Arrange to go somewhere-a friend's or a doctor's office where you can weigh once a week or even better, just once a month.

It's good you vent here but may I give you a few things to think about.  Tread very lightly and try a little compassion, even if she is a witch (with a "b") .....

Even though your fiance' may "hate" her , there is a lot to family dynamics that take a while to understand, and some things are more felt than explained, so don't think your fiance's feelings for his mother are so simple, cut and dry and totally in line with your own all the time.  Mother/ child issues are complicated and often very dynamic; tinged with guilt and frustration but sometimes, even in the worst of times, there is love.  He is responding to her, isn't he?  Try not to add to his anger and resentment toward her as sometimes that can come back to bite you in the bum.

Also-remember she is an older woman whose life has, until now, probably revolved around her husband taking care of her and the raising of her kids (even if she did it badly-or at least they think so-I'm guessing you kinda like your fiance'?).  This may be a great time to distract her and take the pressure off her son..she probably could benefit from a lunch out, a friend (you?) or some help finding a hobby or a place to volunteer etc...all of that would be gifts to all involved, especially if it takes the pressure of you and her sons.

I have no patience with racism, but this might be a chance to prove her wrong by becoming even a reluctant ally.  You can't really count on changing her archaic views, but you can try to understand that she must be a sad, undereducated and now very lonely woman who is without the family support we would all need at a time like that.  I'm not saying she "deserves" it, necessarily-just that that is probably what is behind her behavior.  It may be wise for you personally, and very admirable at the same time, to try to help her address some of these voids in her life.  It may pay off and you've lost nothing, except maybe a little bit of your anger.  Again, it's understandable that you are angry and you have my sympathy, but there may be some ways that might make the mater better instead of just hating her.

Decadent and butter laden desserts are what I save for holidays!  And I love Paula, who always says "everything in moderation"-with a wink...

First-forgive yourself and move on.  Then have a plan for next time-  A bubble bath when the urge hits?  Painting your nails (good stalling tactic!)?

I keep frozen grapes in the freezer as a snack and like to have a food that is labor intensive to snack on-like a pomegranate.   You'll find your own set of mind (and tummy) games.

Can't do anything about what's done but it's all yours from here on out.

Your body is probably holding on to water.  When I have been used to eating well and then go off my body seems to not know what to do with the extra calories, fat, salt etc...and it takes a couple of days back on track to assess the real damage, if any.

Drink a lot of water and carry on as usual (before the weekend!).  And I bet you'll see the bulk of it, if not all of the extra weight off in a day or two
