| Fitness | Can't run on a treadmill... | Nov 22 2008 22:27 (UTC) |

It's not just you. Treadmills scare the heck out of me because I always seem to start creeping to one side and I'm afraid I'll misstep and fall. Which seems more dangerous than usual on a treadmill as opposed to a track. Thank goodness the treadmills I jog on have plastic arms on the sides. I hold onto those for dear life. |

| Weight Loss | How accurate are BMR calculators for you? | Nov 22 2008 16:42 (UTC) |

If you want to give your metabolism a rev, try eating at your maintenance number of calories and then do some weight training. If you eat over your maintenance, you can build muscle. Muscle is metabolically active tissue that helps burn more fat. If you're only doing cardio workouts, then you're likely losing some of your weight in the form of lean muscle, which will definitely slow your metabolism. If you haven't already, check out The New Rules of Lifting For Women. |

Oh, I'm not really new. I just forgot my old username/password over the summer. The problem with just logging my activity is that I can't really log the individual trips up the stairs because I don't know how long it takes me to get up each flight and my speed varies, etc. I guess I will just trust the CC numbers, though. Anyone else think I should change my activity level to sedentary? |

| The Lounge | Are older guys any good? | Oct 29 2008 16:13 (UTC) |

I actually read an article about this once. Because of the surge of testosterone in the late adolescent years, men hit their sexual peak somewhere around 25 and apparently the testosterone starts to ebb around 29ish. That's not to say men aren't good at sex past thirty! Just there's a bit less stamina in most cases. Women hit their sexual peak at 36 or somewhere around there. There's a trade off, though. Young may mean stamina, but it doesn't necessarily mean skill. And older men may have less stamina, but they also know a bit more. ;P |

I'm voting for McCain. Probably the only 18 year old in New York City who is, though. Hahaha. |

| Fitness | Exercising while sick | Oct 25 2008 17:00 (UTC) |
1 |
It depends on the severity/type of your sickness. If you have a cold, go for it. If you have a really bad case of a stomach virus or the flu, you should give yourself a few days to recover. Doubt you're going to get much out of your workout if you're about to throw up the whole time. My doctor had me get a mono test in August and I found out I had it. She said that as long as I didn't do anything too vigorous (i.e. contact sports, sprinting, heavy lifting) that I could still work out. I've been using ellipticals, arc trainers, and stationary bikes. So working out when you're sick is ok, depending on the illness and the exercise. |

Yah, I know that they're mostly around 100 cals for half a cup. The thing is, my school basically taste tests new flavours for Edy's, so it's Edy's frozen yogurt, but I don't think it's technically on the market yet. Or at least, I can't find it.

| Weight Gain | fainting?! | Oct 21 2008 02:15 (UTC) |

That happened to me one night a couple weeks ago when I was visiting home. I'm not underweight at all. I'd eaten plenty that day. I woke up in the middle of the night to use the bathroom, and then I passed out. The reason? I was so dehydrated. I realised that I'd had nothing to drink but diet soda all day. That and the fact that I'd eaten some Indian food and was having... *cough* digestion problems, really dehydrated me. I drank 2 glasses of water, sat down for a while, and I was fine. Have you been drinking enough water? |

| The Lounge | Question about Men and Socks ... | Oct 17 2008 20:28 (UTC) |

Wow! That is a lot of socks. I mean, I think most men are at least a little attached to their socks, but that's a bit overboard. Haha. My father also really digs socks. I remember we used to buy him these weird scented black socks for Christmas. They smelled like fresh-cut grass and other such things. I thought it was hilarious. My father loved it. |

I should plan out a cheat day, too. I've been missing my best friends, Ben and Jerry, way too much. but my sister came to visit me at college last weekend and I basically had a cheat weekend. Haha. I guess I'll have to wait a little while. Good for you. I know that's really tough. :) |

| Weight Loss | Need help to loss 1 pound per week | Oct 16 2008 04:06 (UTC) |

Actually, mwhitmer has it backwards, I think. You're working out so hard, you should add calories, I think! Depending on how much you are burning, you could probably add a couple hundred. You don't want a deficit larger than 1000 calories. You should stick to a 500 calorie deficit. I don't know if you think you are burning more than 1900 a day, but if you are, up the calories for sure. |

| Young Calorie Counters | College freshman---Is it okay NOT to drink? | Oct 15 2008 15:50 (UTC) |

Hey there. I'm a freshman is college right now. My school's really competitive (It's an Ivy League school, so I mean it's competitive). The students are really stressed, for the most part. And on weekends, a lot of them go and party. On my floor, there's a party every week in this one guy's room. I have not been to any parties with alcohol yet. I like the taste/feel of some alcohol, but I don't want to drink. My boyfriend doesn't want me to drink. And I still have so much fun anyway. I play games with my other floormates who don't go to the parties either. I talk to my boyfriend on the phone. I go out to dinner with friends. And even if I went to a party, I wouldn't drink. But it's totally up to you. |

If 2154 is your BMR, then your actual burn meter is around 2600. And that's if you're "sedentary". If you're active, you burn more. I think you should be eating around 2000-2100 on days you don't work out. |

| The Lounge | Fat and Proud or Just Plain Offensive? | Oct 07 2008 21:45 (UTC) |

I guess it would depend on who was wearing it. I think they're really funny, and if someone like me, a chubby person in the overweight category, wore one, I'd probably just giggle or not even pay attention. If someone who's morbidly obese wore it, I might be upset. Because I think it's awful for a person to be like, "Oh, I don't care if I'm 300 pounds." I'm "fat", but healthy. I can't laugh when someone is unhealthy, though. :C |

| The Lounge | beginning to think there's more smokers than non-smokers | Oct 07 2008 15:50 (UTC) |
129 |
I'm a freshman in college now, and while I wouldn't say most people at my school smoke, I definitely was surprised by the number of smokers. There are a couple of smokers who live on my floor, but they're very discreet about it. I didn't know until about a week ago that one of the guys smoked. And they always take it outside, even though it's so inconvenient (we live on the 11th floor of our dorm building). I was also surprised, and a little upset, by the number of my highschool friends who started smoking once they got to college. |

| Weight Loss | What made you fat in the first place | Oct 06 2008 17:23 (UTC) |
36 |
I think there were 4 main factors that led to me ballooning up to ~217 pounds by the time I was 16. 1) My genetics. My father's father, most of my mother's side of the family, my father and 2 of his brothers, my mother, my older brother and I are all heavy. I don't think it's a coincidence. However, I don't exclusively blame genetics. Which brings me to: 2) My environment. There was always ice cream in the freezer. Always tastykakes in the house. Always getting chocolate bars with the groceries. Always bottles of coke or sprite. Which aren't necessarily bad in moderations. But take into account my 3rd factor. 4) Emotional/compulsive eating. My father would tell me I was fat or chubby. My brother would call me "Fatkins" or something like that. They'd both tell me I needed to lose weight. And maybe it was out of defiance that I ate more instead? And then there's the whole thing where when I'm bored, I'll just eat whatever's around.

| Health & Support | Is it ok to donate blood? | Oct 06 2008 17:09 (UTC) |

They will weigh you there if you look questionable. And if you're too light, they won't let you. But just because you're under 110 or over 110 won't guarantee anything. I was around 195 or something like that the first time I gave blood, and I had eaten recently and everything, and I passed out on my way to the snack table afterwards. Whereas some of my friends who are like 115 were completely fine. But yah. They'll weigh you at the drive. |

DDR is awesome. If you're looking to burn a few extra calories (and by a few, I mean several hundred), then DDR is perfect because it's fun and it gets your heart pumping. As for measuring weight loss. If you just want to check on your weight for now, you could try using the scale at your doctor's office. It might even be best not to buy a scale and only use that. Then you won't get addicted to the scale like so many people do. |

| The Lounge | Convincing parents on college of choice? HELP! | Sep 25 2008 02:33 (UTC) |

Hey. As a freshman in college, I can say I definitely know what you're talking about. I just got through with that whole experience. For years and years, probably since 7th or 8th grade, I was completely set on going to Columbia University. Ivy League school. In the middle of New York City. Had every potential major I was looking into. What wasn't to love? Then I got distracted. Decided I wanted to go to my state school instead. Save money. Travel during the summers. I also looked into Middlebury because I'm a language major and they have a great program. But you know what? The day before it was due, I turned in the Early Decision application to Columbia. And now I'm a student here. You still have time to figure it out. Just think it over for now. Apply when the time comes. Choose when you know what's right. We sort of have a way of instinctively picking what's right for us. Don't give up on your original choice just yet. :) |
