| Motivation | lost weight but i feel fatter? | Aug 17 2009 22:21 (UTC) |
|
I go back and forth.. I lost 60 pounds first with South Beach diet, then by using calorie counter here. I think sometimes I look great and sometimes I lost all the weight and I still dont look good. I think it doesn't matter how much you lose, you can still fall into thinking negative thoughts. IMO part of the weight loss process is also changing yourself mentally so you are happy with yourself no matter what. I try to think positive things to myself when I look into the mirror. Even if I don't really believe it at the time.. I think that part of building a better self-image has to be mechanical at first. Then it will come natural to think positive things and you will feel more positive about yourself. No matter how much weight you gain or lose, your body is your own. You'll be much happier with your body if you learn to be happy with yourself inside and out. I had a lot of problems with motivation after I lost 25. I felt like a failure even though I'd tried so hard. Just keep going and thinking positive thoughts. Now that I've lost 60, and I'm just 3 pounds away from my goal weight I'm so happy that I've made it this far, but the negative thoughts still come in. I think it's just part of learning to accept yourself at any weight. I can also relate to getting a more negative attitude after losing some weight. I always thought it was because I never paid so much attention before. It was always, ok I just look like crap, oh well. Once I started the weight loss process, it was like telling myself I actually cared. Then the criticism started to get worse. I just tried to relax those obsessions by thinking about what I would say to a friend who was in my situation. You are your own harshest critic. I wish you the best! I know you will get through this hurdle if you just keep trying. :-) |

| The Lounge | What constitutes as a lie? | Nov 18 2008 21:44 (UTC) |

I think that the part that hurts when someone lies to you is the deception which equals abusing trust. Deception is deception. Period. Even if it's not accompanied with a "lie." I was with someone who was seeing someone else but not telling me about it. He said that he never lied -- because he never said that we were exclusive. There were plenty of other things he said that led me to believe that we were exclusive and the fact that he could get out of "lying" by technically not saying a was the stupidest piece of mind-boggling crap I've ever had the priviledge of wrapping my mind around. A pretty big important part of showing someone that they matter to you is actually being honest. It's important to be clear that a relationship is not exclusive in order to have that relationship and not hurt peoples' feelings. Whether or not someone lies, it doesn't mean that they didn't do something deceptive. Whether or not that deception would be called a lie is irrelevant really. It should be treated the same as a lie. .... sorry, got long winded there. When I saw it had to do with a 'complicated' relationship, I could definitely relate. |

I'd also like to see what the answer to that is. I have the same problem with my shoulders, chest and back. I would like to know how to strengthen them without overdoing it. |

| The Lounge | Athiest Holiday Ad Angers Christians | Nov 13 2008 01:28 (UTC) |

I'm an atheist and I don't think the ad is in bad taste. I don't understand all of the commotion about it from religious people.. Riots? Really? What's wrong with posing the question? Any religious person could just think to themselves, "because I believe in god, that's why." And then be done with it. I just don't get all of the anger. I get tired of Christian or church ads all over the place, but not angry. A little bit irritated, but not hostile. Why can't the angry Christians just be secure in their own beliefs and let others be? Sorry I'm going crazy with the questions that I'm sure any atheist-minded person is probably going in circles with. I do believe it is a refreshing change. I wonder what they hoped to acheive, if anything other than just some visibility and to put it out there that you can be good and godless. *snicker* |

Who "won" the debate is all up to personal judgement. I am an Obama supporter and I agree with most of his policies. I wasn't undecided before last nights debate. imo, Obama seems very genuine and very cool under pressure. I can understand smiling awkwardly when you hear crazy, untrue things. I can understand how people might disagree with me, but that's my opinion anyway. Did anyone hear McCain call him "Senator Government"?? I almost peed my pants it was so funny. |

I also agree it could be what you are eating and a bland diet for a couple of weeks then reintroducing foods will certainly tell you if it is related to your diet. I have a friend who has the same reaction to soy milk. I happen to be fine with soy milk, but if I have regular milk I am running to the bathroom with bad gas. The best gas medicine I have ever used are the GasX Chewables... or Immodium Anti-Diarrheal and Anti-Gas. I hope you get better. It's not only embarrassing but painful too!! |

| Weight Loss | What made you fat in the first place | Oct 06 2008 21:10 (UTC) |

I never had a great body image. I had more or less been a healthy weight, but I always thought I was huge. I can attest to a bad relationship contributing, though. I'm sorry you had to go through what you did. Mine was a little bit opposite. I had lost a ton of weight because I went through a period of time where I was more or less homeless. A friend of mine and I started dating and he wanted me to live with him. I was somewhere around 140 which is at the low end of a healthy BMI for me, but I was so starved to get to that point I was not healthy or healthy-looking. It seemed like he had all of the best intentions, and I didn't have anywhere else to go. At first, he was welcoming but, after living with him for a month, he would criticise how much I ate and tell me I was eating too much. I ate one small sandwich a day in front of him. He even called me fat and said I could lose a lot of weight. The bad part was how bad my ribs were showing then. I knew he was wrong but it still hurt. After I got back on track, saved up some money, and was able to leave him, I started gaining weight and feeling a little better about myself. I started dating someone else a while later and we have been together for 5 years. In the beginning of our relationship, I was so happy and food was just all over the place. It was an extreme contrast from where I came from and how I got so thin. I equated being stuffed with being happy and secure. I packed on the pounds until I was obese (said my BMI). I guess my bad relationship caused me pack on the pounds -- only because I was trying to live as far opposite of that as I could. It's also not so helpful that my new man is Italian and loves to make me pasta and homemade sauce. :-D You're right to ask the question, you know, because I think everyone has a story. Sometimes it makes you feel better to vent it. |

| Health & Support | ............Abortion...........? | Oct 03 2008 19:22 (UTC) |

When I first saw this post, I thought it was a joke like some other people did. To start a flamewar about abortion. This is ridiculous. If, in fact, you are really worried about being pregnant, that's a real legitimate fear. Please see your doctor. You can get your blood tested to see if you are pregnant. That test will not be wrong. There are many different forms of birth control. You NEED to talk to a health care professional about how they work and when to/when not to worry if you are pregnant. It's WAY more important to talk to a professional than read this crap. Yes, abortion is a way to prevent an unwanted pregnancy. It is a PERSONAL CHOICE. Don't let anyone make you feel guity about it by spewing religious propaganda. Your body and your life are YOURS. If this is a real post, I hope that you talk to a doctor soon and put your worries to rest. Good luck |

| Fitness | Elliptical Cal Count Wrong? | Oct 02 2008 19:17 (UTC) |

Yeah, I think your heart rate that high is okay there too - unless you have heart problems or something like that. I agree that getting that out of breath and light-headed is bad. If you get light-headed enough, you could loose your balance or pass out and really hurt yourself! I used to push myself so hard on the elliptical - up to 179/180 - and I felt like crap when I was done. If I'm feeling too tired around 172, I just go where I feel I'm pusing myself, but not too hard sometimes around 165 or so. As long as you're excersizing, that's the important part, I think. When she told me that there's really no benefit to pushing yourself that hard, I've never done it since. Maybe it would be a good idea for you to get a good heart monitor - you never know if the one on your elliptical is not getting a good reading. |

I do the same as kajikit and put the big clothes in a box and drop them off at a charity station or a thrift store. Fortunately, I still have lots of old smaller clothes in different sizes that I'm starting to work through. I also let my friends and family know if I have some clothes in their sizes that I can't wear... but they all wear smaller sizes than me - so off to charity it goes. You could always go to craigslist.org to sell them/give them away without having to pay fees like eBay. I had a friend who also used to have a swap group for kids clothes on some Yahoo group. |

I was told once by someone who has a masters in sports medicine that they are not very accurate, but are a nice guideline. She said that it's way more important to measure your heart rate and stay within a reasonable range. Here's a link I found that talks about elliptical calorie counters: http://www.allellipticals.com/elliptical-trai ner-calorie-burn.html That's a pretty high heart rate. I am 26 and my BMI says I am overweight. I've been using the ellipticals at my gym for 10 months. My heart rate is usually around 72 to 75. Any higher than that and I get light-headed and sometimes dizzy. Here's a link to what your target heart rate should be: http://www.americanheart.org/presenter.jhtml? identifier=4736 She told me that there are no benefits to excersizing above your target rate. It does the same about of good for your body, but just leaves you even more exhausted. Good luck! edit: I meant 172-175 |

I just want to get to a point where I think I'm healthy. In the past, I was always so worried about how I looked and scrutinize myself way too much. I'd be lying if I said I didn't want to look skinny and hot.... but I think most importantly I just want to look back at my diet and lifestyle and have evidence that I'm treating my body as good as I can be. It's the only body I have so I want it to be the best it can be. |

So you can log your weight -- which allows you to do the following:
- Plot your weight curve
- Analyze the trend of your weight (see under Recent in the figure above)
- Determine the projected target date (see under Overall in the figure above)
