I see a trainer once or twice a week and have done so all year. However, I found her through the university I attend, so the cost is significantly lower than what you'll find ordinarily. (About 1/3.) It's really great for me because I cannot wimp out on going and getting a tough workout because I don't want to waste her time or my money. I really like and trust my trainer because she is always very invested and concerned about helping me increase my fitness without injury. My trainer always adjusts my workout based on the progress I've made and how I'm doing day to day, week to week. So for me, really a great thing, but it's very much a your mileage may vary kind of thing. |

I get this at work fairly often and I have a coworker who takes it as a personal offense if you don't eat her fat and calorie-laden treats. I go with "Oh that looks delicious, but I:" add appropriate excuse "... just had something heavy earlier," "...am sensitive to X ingredient" "...have dinner plans and want to go light" and the simplest, "...can't today, but thank you so much." Fortunately, everyone in my group remembers me nearly 70 pounds ago and even though the one woman still gets offended, everyone else is very supportive. |

I love pumpkin cheesecake so much. I should add the disclaimer that I love anything in that pumpkin-y vein. I don't dig pumpkin soup, but pumpkin pie, pumpkin ice cream, pumpkin spice lattes. Oh heck yeah. |

| Weight Loss | Fact or Fiction: you'll lose more weight by not eating after 8pm | Nov 17 2009 18:19 (UTC) |
21 |
Agreed, fiction. I always conserve calories from my daily allotment to be able to eat after 7 or 8 because I always get hungry later in the evening. Considering I've lost 67 pounds, I'd have to say from personal experience that it doesn't sabotage weight loss. In general it seems that advice is mainly to keep people from late-night binging while they're bored and have already eaten everything they should for the day. I wish I could remember exactly what I once read on here about the myth of gaining more weight when you eat after an arbitrary time of day. Something to do with the fact that if that were true, the world could solve many of its hunger problems by simply feeding the hungry late at night. |

As everyone else said, yeah, that's probably about right. That whipped cream's gonna get you, too. Since it's a local joint, I can't say whether you got 2% or whole milk, but you can take charge of your order as long as you don't mind giving them a long explanation of what you want. I can't (read that as won't) give up my froofy coffees, so I go with a skinny grande vanilla latte at Starbucks, which is 130 (90 for a tall). Or at Tully's I'll get a sugar free mocha with nonfat milk and light syrup and guesstimate it at around the same number of calories as the skinny vanilla since 2 tbl of sugar free chocolate syrup is 15 calories. Tully's annoys me that they don't have the sugar free mocha info on their site. |

It just goes to show that perspective is a strange thing. I'm 5'8" and 161 and these days I think of myself as "slim" and I'd laugh at anyone who called me thick. Good for you for taking charge of your eating habits and taking care of yourself. Don't let rude jerks derail you. |

| Weight Loss | Maintaining on 1500? | Nov 11 2009 02:50 (UTC) |
|
You're 16. Your calories needs are significantly different from an adult's. Based on the stats in your profile and moderate activity, your calorie needs per day are more like 2361 for maintenance. Based on that, you aren't losing because you're undereating and you should seriously consider upping your calories for the sake of your health both in the short and long term. |

| Maintaining | "You're losing too much!" and Other Charming Comments | Nov 05 2009 07:55 (UTC) |
|
It's weird. I've gotten it from a man I dated (and who I am no longer dating, thank you), from my boss, and even from my manicurist. I've lost nearly 70 pounds at this point, gotten into the best physical condition of my adult life, and I feel a lot better about myself, but I really don't get these "don't lose any more," "don't lose too much weight," and "be careful how much weight you lose" comments. At 5'8", 158-160 is not even close to too thin. The guy I was dating told me not to lose any more weight when I weighed 180. All I want is a better cushion from an overweight BMI, a little less flab around the middle, and better physical fitness. I'm getting there with diet and exercise and I'm keeping healthy goals and methods in mind. All I can figure is that people just don't have a good idea of what a healthy weight really is anymore. It's distorted by a majority overweight population and an irrationally thin media portrayal of what is beautiful. Talk about a disconnect between reality and "ideals." |

| Weight Loss | Tuna for weight loss? | Nov 01 2009 17:47 (UTC) |
8 |
I read around a bit and found a variety of advice on how much tuna you should eat because of concerns about mercury poisoning. The NRDC has some fairly cut and dried recommendations based on body weight. The FDA recommendations (which are the same as the EPA recommendations) are perhaps a bit less extreme, but regardless, they also recommend not eating as much as you're wanting to eat:
I love tuna and was sad to realize that I shouldn't eat as much as I like. Now I have it a couple of times a month and even then it's a guilty pleasure. tl;dr: Forget concerns about sodium, do not eat tuna every day for weight loss because of the mercury risks. |

| Motivation | Anyone else 5'8? What's your goal weight? | Oct 25 2009 17:23 (UTC) |

Wow. Some of these goals would leave me looking extremely unhealthy even though I'm also 5'8". I know I have a heavier frame than many people, though, so that isn't a judgment, just trying those numbers on myself and going, "No way." My goal is no lower than 140, but more likely around 145 or 147. 147 would be 15 pounds down from where I am now and a total of 80 pounds lost. |

I expect manners from my friends because I consider them to be a sign of respect for the other person. I will not be good friends with someone who can't exhibit basic respect for me just as I exhibit basic respect for them. I don't expect manners from strangers, but from friends, yes, I do. |

| Fitness | Arch Cramps! | Jul 23 2009 20:52 (UTC) |

It is a little awkward, but I've just added it in to my usual regimen of rolling my calves, IT band, inner thighs, and glutes. The rolling is a great thing to help minimize post-workout soreness for other reasons, too. And I totally know what you mean about feeling like cheating. I do a lot of work on the bosu ball and I end up pushing through the cramps because I don't want to slack off, even though I know it's legitimate pain. |

| Fitness | Arch Cramps! | Jul 23 2009 19:17 (UTC) |

I recently discovered that my arch cramps are actually related to my shins. I now foam roll my shins and there are a couple of spots on my shins that when I foam roll them, my arches will cramp for the period of the rolling. It's a direct correlation in my case. I'd suggest giving it a shot, if you're like me, you'll find the connection pretty quickly. This is a very recent discovery for me. I've been foam rolling my shins for about a week, and I'm getting a bit less cramping now. I think with time and diligent rolling, in my case the cramping will be alleviated. |

Vagoo (not my term) Last night I was trying to explain to a friend why I hate supermans (the exercise) and "mons" is just so clinical to explain where I get bruised from the exercise, so the euphemism now is "pushin cushion." Still hate supermans. I'm bruised two days later after that exercise class. |

It is possible that it's your measurement methods as well. If you're measuring with measuring cups and spoons rather than a scale, your estimation of how many calories you're consuming may be very off. |

| Weight Loss | Will I gain weight? | Jul 20 2009 03:45 (UTC) |
|
If it's an isolated splurge, I'd say no, you won't gain weight. If you make this a habit, then yes, you probably will. I had a big splurge on Thursday (3500 calories when I usually eat under 2000) and I was actually down on the scale the next day. I like what I read here on a regular basis: a single day's overeating isn't going to cause to you gain weight any more than a single day's undereating will make you lose weight. |

But for its context and lack of taking itself seriously? I really like it. Not quite love, but lots of like. |
