Are you regularly gaining on 3000 calories? If you are not gaining at least 1 pound every week, you need to increase your calories by 500. Any less than 500 may be too slow. You are doing a great job - 3000 calories every day is a fantastic effort. Sorry to hear that you are still not feeling your best, but your hair will stop falling out once you gain to a BMI of 20. A BMI of 20 gives your body a chance to repair itself on the inside. I am not sure if your goal weight is a BMI of 20, use the BMI under the ‘tools’ section of this website to see what a BMI of 20 is for your height. |

You know you need to gain any way, so look at the extra calories as an opportunity. Sure, it is not healthy to over do it EVERY day, because it is not a good habit to get in to once you reach a healthy weight. However, if you have truly accepted the fact that you need to gain weight, then you will stop compensating for the days when you do eat extra calories. People who do not need to gain weight and have not had eating disorders can reduce their calories the following day after they over eat; it is okay for such people to exercise a little extra, and to eat less to burn off extra calories. Because you are not in this position, you need to use occasions when you eat extra as just another opportunity to gain. People in active recovery do not restrict to compensate for days when they over eat. Are you serious about recovering? if you are, then when you eat extra calories, DO NOT restrict the following day. get serious about gaining weight. You need to gain, so you must not try to compensate for extra calories. Instead, the best thing you can do is to go back to eating regular, balanced meals that give you enough calories to gain. It is better to gain through regular, normal and balanced meals, but it is normal and healthy to over eat on occasions such as birthdays. |

3500 extra calories = one pound, so your 3000 extra calories can easily be burnt of by taking realistic steps. Burning an extra 200 calories a day for two weeks, or eating about 200 less calories a day combined with burning an extra 200 calories each day for about one week, will burn off 3000 extra calories. |

You really do sound miserable. Look, I have similar stats to you, and I have been in a similar position to you. I was doing weights a couple of days a week, and doing an hour of aerobics several days every week, and I was only eating about 1600 calories. Throughout this time, I started to binge eat. It is to be expected, and you will continue to binge until you either eat more, or gain weight. Use the tools on this website to estimate what a person of your age/height/weight needs to eat, and use it as a MINIMUM: make sure you eat at least this recommended amount, and then eat more if you feel hungry. |

Okay, from my own personal experience, having anxiety related issues or depression, combined with being at a slimmer than average weight, can cause over eating, emotional eating, and binging. Even a BMI of 18.5 - 20 can be enough to trigger a persons body to over eat. Your depression and anxiety are enough on their own to trigger over eating. In addition to this, being at your slim weight could also be slightly too low for your body, which would cause over eating. Therefore, your anxiety and depression combined with you being a little too thin will make over eating even more likely. |

Also, being thin and attractive can get you places in some respects; certain people treat you better, and models like Kate’s livelihoods have always depended on how they look. Therefore, being thin has got certain people a lot in life. Unfortunately, such people overlook the more important aspects of life that they should be deriving their happy ness from. If their looks were taken away, they would not have the tools to enjoy their life without being thin. It is the same with Paris Hilton and very rich people. Because they literally buy several thousands of dollars worth of clothes when they want to feel good, they lack to ability to be happy in normal, non material ways. |

This has happened to me. I have tried a raw vegan food diet a while ago and I ate an enormous amount of an orange fruit called a tangelo - I am in Australia but in the US I believe it is called a Clementine. |

Are you sure that these girls eat 18 doughnuts? The way I see it, is that smaller people need smaller amounts of calories. Eating a few doughnuts a day does not mean they eat a large total amount of calories - maybe the ice cream and pizza they eat while they are out during the day is all they eat? For instance, a person of 5 ‘ 10 and 100 - 115 lbs still needs about 1800 calories sedentary to maintain…. With a normal metabolism. Therefore, such a person could eat a few doughnuts or slices of pizza, without exceeding that calorie limit. Therefore, tall and very thin people in this position may look as though they can eat more than the average person to maintain there weight, when they actually eat a normal amount to maintain a smaller weight. |

I am also interested in the what is attainable for different body types. To even be a proper model, you have to be born tall, and with a small frame. Models simply have smaller bones - a smaller structure. In addition to having a smaller body, some models also eat right and exercise on top of this. Not only are most models born small, but they also work at it, too.Although, the extremely tall and thin models who are absolutely tiny that walk the catwalks (90 lbs and 6 feet type tiny), are hired for their child size thinness because it best displays the clothes, and would not need to work out. In fact, their tiny body types and size would not have the capacity to gain muscle as easily as a normal person. |

The scary thing for me about restoring my weight, is maintaining. Even though I have not restricted in a long time, I still rarely feel physical hunger, not unless I leave many hours between meal. My goal is to eat intuitively, although it is hard to do this when I cannot only rely on physical feelings in my stomach. Therefore, I have a couple of ways that I use that help me determine what my needs are: |

You poor thing - It feels absolutely horrible to binge eat, but there are ways to stop this destructive way of eating. Firstly, you need to try to understand why you binge. What is your relationships with food like? Did you have a healthy relationship with food before you started to binge eat? Are there any reasons that you feel has contributed to your binge eating? |

I do not think people eating chocolate cake have to pitty people eating strawberries. A major factor in the long term success of slim people, such as myself, is that we learn to actually enjoy unprocessed natural foods. Although I do enjoy expensive high fat cheese and dark chocolate occasionally, I have eliminated most artificial, fast, and processed foods from my diet, therefore my body does not crave chocolate cake like crazy. |

The way people react to your eating habits could be a because of cultural or social expectations, or because of the way your friends feel in relation to their own bodies and eating habits. Firstly, it is a very common thing for young people your age to eat take away foods when you are shopping or hanging out. Your friends may feel threatened if you are able to enjoy normal activities without the need to eat bad food. Because your friends never do certain activities without bad food themselves, you may make them feel bad if you are able to enjoy yourself without the food. |

Some people like being skinny. It is a personal preference. An opinion. Some people simply like the way very thin people look. However, the pain and suffering that maintaining a weigh that is too low for your body will ‘outweigh’ the benefits of being as ‘skinny’ as you want to be. Being able to live a normal and healthy life feels better than ‘ skinny’ feels. Trust me, it is not possible to enjoy being skinny if it stops you from having friends, performing well at school or your job, and basically holds you back from achieving your potentials in life. |

| Young Calorie Counters | media ruining women... | Nov 16 2009 07:14 (UTC) |

That could be true, but another theory that I have recently read about, is that males are also attracted to the fragile nature of very thin women, because it makes them feel more powerful. I have heard a lot of women say that when they become shockingly thin, they were upset to discover that there were quiet a lot of men who actually like very thin women. Thinness is not the only the criteria for 'perfection' that the media projects all models and actresses that are well known and rich enough to be famous have perfect teeth and great skin (or it is made up if it is not naturally very good). Personally, I do find the perfect white teeth and nice hair and skin more attractive than bad skin and normal teeth. However, we all know that who a person is on the inside is more important than looks. Unfortunately, who a person is on the inside cannot be shown through media images and on magazine covers, so the images that are visible are the ones that are reinforced. On a funny note - did any one watch that stupid reality show called true beauty? It was an American show that was shown here in Australia, that Vanessa Millano girl was the host. Basically, some of the people on it were such idiots, that I actually felt sorry for them. Looks will not buy them the tools to have a great life - no person who is worthwhile would be able to be close with such an idiot, if they cannot even have a conversation with them lol.

It is a matter of accepting reality. You will never have a body like a super model. Some people think these women have more attractive bodies than normal people do. Deal with it. |

I do not think it is worth dieting if you cannot allow yourself to have one small piece of cake. What is the point? To be successful, you need to learn that you can easily fit the foods that you truly crave, such as chocolate cake, into your calorie allowance without it making any difference to your body. I would save room for a 250 - 400 calorie small piece of cake, considering it is home made with love by your sister! |

My deserts and treats are calorie dense, but they are much healthier than the low cal diet products. Most people can fit 3 tablespoons of peanut butter or almond butter into their calorie allowance, depending on how much they can eat. |

| Foods | For those who eat clean... | Nov 14 2009 05:50 (UTC) |
|
To eat clean you need to learn to read ingredients. Processed foods can be clean, if they do not contain any preservatives or man made chemicals. Or example, canned beans are clean if the only ingredients are beans, salt, and water. Another example is tinned tuna or salmon, these are clean if the only ingredients are the fish, salt, and water. Smoked salmon is also clean as far in my opinion, because the only ingredients are wood smoke, salt, and salmon. |

I can 100% guarantee that 200 extra calories will not make ANY difference. NONE. It will not add a single ounce of weight to your appearance. However, 200 extra calories too often will result in weight gain over time. Because it is a one off occasion you have NOTHING to worry about. Go out to dinner and eat what you want, you will only feel resentful if you have to force yourself to eat salad and watch every one else eat foods that you crave. In fact, denying yourself from having the foods you truly crave when you truly feel like them makes people feel angry and you will definitely rebel against your own rules if they are too strict, and binge or over eat on the forbidden foods. A perfect body is not worth it if you have to deny yourself of everything you feel like. Definitely do not ever punish your body, OR restrict calories if you eat too much; even if it is 1000 extra calories, mentally, it is a form of punishment. |

I am at the lower end of healthy, and I do not experience intense physical hunger. This tells me that my body does not need to gain extra weight. However, because you only just stopped gaining, your body may not have calmed down yet, and it may still be exited that you are feeding it properly. I am no expert, but maybe your hunger will calm down, and it may just take a while after you restore your healthy weight. |

I had not heard of nuts causing constipation - although not enough fiber can cause it. I think that trail mix is actually an ideal afternoon snack - especially when you are gaining, as it gives you easy calories. The dried fruit and nuts are high in fiber, too. However, it is good to try different snacks; what I do, is I make my own trail mix and cookies that are made from nuts and dried fruit; that way, I can use different dried fruits and different nuts each time, to keep it interesting. It is actually cheaper to make your own trail mix, as dried fruit and nuts are cheaper to buy in larger amounts. You just throw your choice of nuts and dried fruit together. Taste great, cheap, and healthier for you than packaged trail mix as it does not have added sugar and stuff. |

I also used to have a structure too! But now, I just eat when I need to and try to do what feels best on the day. Some people thrive on having a healthy plan to follow, however, I am recovering from eating disorders, therefore I try to think about food as little as possible. In the past, I would have a set routine where I would need to have breakfast, lunch, dinner, and a certain number of snacks because it felt balanced and in control. Unfortunately, it only lead to thinking and planning what I was going to eat, so instead of sticking to a set plan each day, I have learnt to trust myself to make good decisions without planning in advance. |

I know that 500 calories adds up over time, but I am wondering what happens if over the space of one year, a person over eats 500 - 1000 extra calories than their body needed; does the body store every last bit of the extra 500 calories as 0.0000987868 of a pound? |

Emma - Thanks, that is exactly what I wanted to here haha - it is nice to know that I am not the only one who can eat the same thing all day! I also added some normal things in to, but like you said, the bulk of my calories were from those darned cookies. The soup sounds REALLY NICE too… sounds like something I could easily eat for all my meals haha. |

Skippinggirlyvinegar - your day actually looks pretty balanced to me compared to what mine was haha. You did not eat a large amount of any particular thing - you snacked, but had balanced, reasonably sized snacks, which looked fairly normal to me. I sometimes eat like that, when I have regular smaller snacks, such as hummus with carrots or yoghurt with berries, rather than have a large 3 meals. Well done on your food choices, you made such healthy choices and you ended up having a great variety of some really healthy foods! A lot of other people studying to not have the same commitment to their food plan! Is there a particular reason why you dislike eating this way? Because you actually ate exceptionally healthy. |
