Why not eat the whole fruits and veges? You are missing out on one of the best parts...the fiber!

Liquids, like juices, empty out of the stomach VERY quickly and therefore have a very low satiety value.

hi gddrdld~ I'm eating fresh live fruits/veggies everyday. I just like to add in some fresh veggie juice for more nutrients. I easily consume about 4 fresh whole fruits each day & lots of salads, sprouts, etc. :-) I also incorporate the pulp into other recipes (to thicken soups, add to homemade veggie/bean burgers, etc).

Thanks for the tips. :-)  I forgot to mention I am exercising--I'm doing speed-walking for about 30-40 minutes 3 times a week, using a lateral stepper a couple times a week at home & dancing. I need to incorporate some weight training.

Everyone keeps talking about the plateau--and pray that I do not ever get that! aak. Do you or someone else here know about when that typically hits???

I'm on the same page as everyone here! Hey, did anyone catch the note that Vicki wrote & posted on the wall??? I recorded it & the preview for next week showed the note & it read something along the lines of: "Warning: Fool me once shame on you . Fool me twice shame on me. I will not rest until that bitch is out of the house."

I can not believe that. (actually, yes I can. She is a very unhappy person & mean!)

And, Bob does know to some extent what they are doing--especially when he sat down Vicki & her hubby & asked what is up & for them to be completely straight with him.

Can't wait for next week! lol

This makes a  10" very thin crust pizza for two.

Thank you Robert! What a simple recipe... I take it the "t" is for teaspoon & I see no salt was added (yay!). About how long does it take to "double in size"? I can't wait to make this--am now wondering if I could use my organic spelt flour for this. What do you think???

Hi amdoc, We both weigh the same & same height. I started cc very recently at 190.5 lbs & am now at 187.5. I had mono back  when I was 19 right after I moved to NYC to go to college. Had to leave school & go home & had mono for 6 months! I gained a little weight then--went up a couple sizes. When I went back to college I lost all of it because I walked everywhere--without trying I was at a size 3/4 (no car!). I gained much of my weight several years later under stress at work & being diagnosed with cancer. That's how I jumped up to the weight I'm at. You are still young & like the other poster mentioned--it's much easier to lose that weight now rather than later.

And kudos for you for feeling good about yourself & having a positive body image. That is awesome! ~Cindy

Fitness Running and Shin-Splints Oct 03 2008

Hi MSPW, I am prone to these as well. I have freelanced for a specialty running store & know several runners (I wish I could run! lol) Anyways, here is my suggestion: Warning* a bit lengthy* sorry!

Go to a specialty running store to get fitted. If they do not watch you walk or run while there then go somewhere else. The wrong shoe can send you into severe pain & even injury.

I started speedwalking & had to switch up different shoes until I found the right pair for me. I have flat feet & severely over-pronated. What worked "for me" was Brooks running shoes & an insert called "DownUnders".

Most people benefit from getting an insert--even with a brand new pair of shoes. They absorb more shock, support, etc. They are an extra expense--I believe the DownUnders are about $30 or so, but VERY worth it.

Yesterday, I tried out a different new Brooks shoe to test it out without my DownUnder inserts & had severe shin splints & had to stop walking & go home. It was that bad. The next day I put my other shoes on with my inserts & no pain at all!

There are many shoe inserts & many brands of running shoes--just do a little research & see what might work for you. Oh, by the way, ask the specialty running store what their return policy is should you experience pain--many will take them back & re-fit you (they return them to the vender & do not lose any money).

Also, there is another great item you may want to look into called "The Stick" It is awesome for before & after working out. here is the link:

http://www.thestick.com/

& read this:  http://www.thestick.com/How/ForAthletes.cfm

I use it & roll it under my feet, around the ankles, shin, calf, etc. Plus awesome on all your other muscles.

Sorry so long! Hope something works for you soon & you get relief.

Best,

Cindy

Hi Terri!!!

I'm new, but I saw your post and wanted to say hello.

While I have nothing life threatening I too have gained weight because of chronic health problems.   It's a real challenge to try to take some sort of control back over your body while going through treatments and such.

I hope your doing well and having more good days then bad!!!   Good luck with your goals.   You sound really positive and excited!!!   Perhaps I shall see you around.

Hi Luna, not sure if you meant Terri or myself (Cindy) but would sure like to get to know some folks on here. I have lost 3 lbs so far! I've been upping my calories slowly & spreading them out throughout the day & eating a little lighter at dinner time. This coming Monday will be 3 full weeks, but I've only been on this site for about a week & love it! I'm sure I'll be running into you on cc. Welcome & best of luck on your journey. :-)

Hi there, I also would like to get one & not sure which one yet. I do know the Polar rep in my area & I could ask him & post back here if you'd like. He let me borrow a new item that wasn't available yet for a month & I really didn't want to give it back! lol (I can't recall the model name, but you wore it on your wrist & it tracked everything but the heart rate--even going up/down, altitude, etc.)

I'm saving up, too for one.

OMG! me too! PMS big time!

I don't eat sweets or chips normally--and for lunch I had tuna with tabasco chipotle hot sauce & a little fat free cheese & tomato in a fat free tortilla. Then I had this huge urge for dark chocolate--so I had 1 1/2 little squares of that (Lindt chili dark chololate)  & then wanted something else spicy! ugh! So I had 1/3 cup of my roomie's buffalo hot sauce pretzel pieces!

So, the damage has been done I guess! At least I can work out later & eat a very light dinner. I go to the store tomorrow & will pick up somehting else in the event of another PMS emergency! lol

So, not much help for you, but totally relate! Undecided

And when you go in for your final session, ask to be shown free-weights training. Machine training is only marginally useful in a rehabilitation setting as part of a physical therapy program - free weights are superior in terms of results achieved.

There is a place for machines in most training programs - as a coat rack while you're over in the free weights area lifting.

If your trainer was at all competent, he wouldn't have you playing around with assistance exercises on a swiss ball, he'd have been showing you the basic program with a barbell.

When you approach the manager, ask to have someone who can show you the basics of barbell training - machines have no place in a starter workout.

melkor, I sure wish I had more info & knew more of what to ask, etc, before working with this trainer guy! I would be interested in the barbell training/free weights. (funny comment about the machines as a coatrack! lol) Would starting out on a couple of machines be so bad while learning some free weight exercises???

Recipes Any AWESOME ground turkey recipes??? Sep 30 2008

Ok, this is great! Finally, I get to share my turkey burger recipe! lol

I have made this about a dozen times or so. I do not really follow recipes and make up many of my own, but I definitely get inspiration from cooking shows, etc. So keep in mind what I write is approximate & you can tweak it to suite your taste.

Cindy's Chimichurri Style Turkey Burgers

  • 1lb to about 1 1/2lb of ground 99% fat free turkey
  • 1 garlic clove (I use a garlic press--sometimes I add a little more)
  • tsp of ground red pepper (or more if you like it spicier)
  • a few turns of ground black pepper
  • 2 heaping TBSP of "Chimichurri Original Argentinean Steak Sauce" -        Use 2 1/2 to 3 TBSP if it's 1 1/2lbs of turkey (take a couple of sheets of paper towels, fold them together in half then put the 2 TBSP on top of paper towel & fold it up & the sides to squeeze out as much of the oil as possible. Save the paper towels as you will use those to wipe your pan or grill with to put the burgers on)
  • 1/4 cup of golden raisons (or use the regular ones add a little more if you want. They make these burgers delicious!)
  • 1/4 cup of pure tomato no sodium (I use "Pomi" that comes in a 26oz. box. Very healthy)
  • Optional: TBSP of Chipotle Tabasco Hot Sauce. It adds a nice background flavor & is not very hot (to me anyways! lol)

Basically, I throw all the ingredients together & use my hands to mix. I do not add any salt, no egg, no breadcrumbs, etc. It doesn't need it in my opinion. It's a very forgiving recipe--so you can adjust the ingredients to your taste. The tomato & raisons make it moist.

The last batch I made was with 1.33lbs of ground turkey & I made 6 burgers with it. I have a Cuisonart grill I use & just wipe the leftover papertowels that soaked up the oil from the chimichurri sauce. I pre-heat at medium/high heat & then turn it down & maintain at about medium heat until cooked through. I let them cool a bit on a couple of paper towels & place 2 in the freezer & the rest in the fridge. I put them in a wrap, on top of a salad, slice & put on top of crackers with a little cheese, in a hamburger bun, etc.

I have other variations, but this is one of my faves. Smile

I found these wraps by the deli in my grocery store called Flatouts . They are only about 90-110 cals depending on which flavor you buy. They have a good amount of fiber and protein and they are a good sized too.  But I used that to build a delicious thin crispy pizza.

Preheat oven to 425

I topped w/low sodium tomato sauce, added my own seasonings...fresh garlic, a bit of salt, basil & oregano.  Then added reduced fat mozzarella, topped w/fresh tomatoes, mushrooms, black olives and turkey pepperoni.

Baked for about 15 minutes I believe.  It was crispy and delicious!

I think I may have tried those before...that is a good alternative though. I've done it with pita bread, too. I am trying to control sodium in my diet & really want to try & make some bread type products at home. But, your way is definitely a good one--especially on saving time! Wink

Thank you everyone for your help & advice. Smile I wanted to get a feel for what is the norm, etc. I will definitely be speaking with someone in charge at the gym so I can use my 3rd free session with a different trainer. I'll get through the awkwardness if the other trainer guy approaches me. And besides, one day I would love to pay for a few sessions. Since it is an investment,  you need to be able to get a feel for other peoples approach, right?! I'll also ask at the same time about the machines & whom to go to. And, if I'm not satisfied I'll cancel my membership & go elsewhere as a couple of small ones just opened up & they aren't a chain.

Thanks again!

Recipes Panko question Sep 29 2008

Original Post by sassysmom:

I don't know if this question has been asked but if it has then i apologize. Has anyone ever made meatloaf with the Panko bread crumbs I did try searching and came up empty my question is does it change the taste or texture of the meatloaf my DH is very fussy about old fashioned food and does not like it much if anything changes too much I on the other hand am always up for change. My concern is the taste I have never used Panko and wondered if it has any different taste?? Don't know just asking so any info would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you all in advance for any information.

Sharon

Hi there, I have purchased the Japanese panko & also the wheat panko. Since I got the wheat one I am hooked! I don't fry it... I actually will coat chicken, etc, in it & bake. It is very cruchy & yummy!

I have not tried it in a meatloaf.... but, would imagine with the wheat one it would work. I would make my own though like Claire mentioned above. It's very fast to do, healthier & cheaper. I still like the Japanese one for dredging shrimp in it & cooking.

Original Post by terri_:

I'm sorry to hear about the cancer. Hopefully you've had good results, and a remission. Please make sure the diet is OK medically, though, as it can cause problems with some health conditions.

But you asked for suggestions. I started at 181 lbs in June, and have lost 30 lbs so far.

First thing is to make sure you're familiar with your ideal, so expetations are realistic.

I've used a dual-focus; eating smart and exercising  smart.  Try this:

Eat more fiber, as in oatmeal or high-fiber cereal for breakfast, and salad with dinner. Fiber has less calories per ounce, and makes you feel full longer.

Cut portion size rather than totally avoiding foods you love. Or treat yourself occasionally to your 'vice.' If you feel deprived constantly, you'll tend to binge.

Snack on fruit. It's good for you, and good for the diet.

Don't eat within 4 hours of going to bed. Let the body digest while you're still active.

Exercise is good. But the same form of exercise all the time isn't always the best. Try varying what you do. That way you'll get the most from it.

Scales can be the bane of a diet. Some people like to weigh weekly, some daily. Me, I weigh daily, but ONLY once, and at the same time of day. Weight varies during the day normally.

Expect plateaus. I've lost 10 lbs in 2 weeks, then gone 2 weeks and lost only 1 lb. I've even gained a lb or 2 after a great loss. It varies.

There's a start. What do you think? Feel free to ask if you have questions. The community here is great.

Hi Terri, thank you for your response! Smile Congrats on your 30lb success! It may take me until next year to get to my ideal weight. I take each day one at a time--you have some good days, bad days, but I try my best to be optimistic & positive.

I've been speed-walking about 30 minutes a day outside & do some floor exercises. After 2 weeks of doing exercise daily I see that I have lost a 1/2 pound. But, I also just started increasing my caloric intake as I was apparently not eating enough by a long shot. I was averaging under 1,000 calories a day. I love that this site has a place to log your food & that is helping me see how much more to eat, etc. So, I am wondering if me only losing a 1/2 pound in 2 weeks is due to me adjusting my diet. I presume so! Undecided

So far on this site my food logs are averaging between  A & B grades. One thing that I need to work on is eating my dinner earlier. It doesn't help if I go to bed at 9:30 or 10pm. I'll find a balance with that soon.

Thank you again for your input & advice!

Ok tm night (I know short notice) I am making mock chicken and sweet potato carrot mash.  I have no ideas about wine/alcohol and I am not sure what to serve with these.  Nothing really strong because I dont want my quests tipsy.

Thanks!~

The "Barefoot" brand wine is pretty good & at a great price point. The sauvignon is nice & casual. If you know what your guests prefer (dry, sweeter, etc) that may be something to consider. You may also want to try adding seltzer to the glass (I do sometimes) and it makes it festive & they actually consume less alcohol per serving. You could also add about a tablespoon of apricot juice, too.

Ok, now I am running with this! lol. You could also make a light white sangria.... very refeshing. If you want some tips on that let me know. I've made it many a time for family gatherings and at my brother's wedding.

weird looking ball. Thought it doesnt look like its much different from just using a bench or something else that elevated and flat.

Hi raediant: I probably should have been more clear about why I was liking this particular exercise ball. I like the fact that it is light, oblong, seems very versatile for various exercises & good for strengthening your core (I'm still learning, but had been told this helps work other muscles as you are trying to stabilyze yourself).

The are several one minute interval exercises--which might also keep things more intersting. But am curious about feedback, too.
