I agree with the post above. However, I would also like to ask, where is all the fruit?

Weight Gain alternatives to fruits and vegetables? Jul 23 2009

It doesn't matter. They are still part of a healthy, balanced diet whether you are gaining, losing, or maintaining. Not to mention that some like avocado, potatoes, and bananas are high calorie. There are hundreds of available varieties of fruits and vegetables with different flavors, so surely you can find at least some you like.

It's more of a trial and error thing. Try 2000 for a week or so and see what happens. If you gain, you can lower the amount. If you lose, well, that's what you want, right? And if you maintain, you can choose to keep it there or take off a few hundred calories to lose.

Maybe 1200 calories isn't enough for you. It is the bare minimum...

Also, if you don't like water, maybe you could try a flavored one? Maybe Propel for some extra vitamins? I get the powdered packets of Propel since they are cheaper.

You could also have tempeh, seitan, lentils, greek yogurt. There's a lot of soy products out there too, but I wouldn't recommend relying on them. You can also find small amounts of protein in grains.  As for the ratio, it really depends on your preferences. I would say don't go under 20 % fat or over 30 % protein though.

Health & Support My doctor told me to increase my calories- mental anguish has followed. Help? Jun 27 2009

You're doctor is right dear, you should be eating more. You said you panic if you even hit 1,100 and even that's below the lowest limit of 1200. Even if you were overweight and need to lose weight, you would need more. I know it's stressful, but I can see a troubling pattern here: You're still not happy with you're weight, you don't eat enough to sustain your body's functions, and you associated your weight loss and eating with control. Those are things that you will usually find in someone with an eating disorder. I know you're weight isn't dangerously low now, but it could end up like that. You need to stop for your health. You might need help to do that. And you're wrong, you can do it. I had an ED, I remember bawling my eyes out everytime someone made me eat more than I wanted to, but I got through it and I live a much happier life right now. To answer your final question, yes, you should go back. Avoiding doctors because they know something is wrong should just tell you that something IS wrong with what you're doing. It's their job to keep you healthy.

Unless you're eating garlic bread or ciabatta, most bread is around the same calorie range. I love bread, too. I usually try to go for something whole-grain. I also like rye, sourdough, french, tomato basil, and tuscany. Loaf or baguette form, I love them.

Second the Spirutein. Except I never have it in liquid form, it's always mixed in my oatmeal. And it mixes a lot better than whey does.

Oh yea, parfaits are good. I've recently been crumbling the 100 calorie Oreo packs and layering it in between Dannon Light and Fit vanilla yogurt. Strawberries taste good when dipped in just the yogurt. Ruggles Moosetrack frozen yogurt is really good for 140 calories per serving. I also like to slice an apple and sprinkle it with cinnamon and stevia or bake a banana. I know that Hungry Girl has a new book out that has several sections dedicated to just desserts. I might check that out.

Also, if you find that is still hard on your stomach, try taking in some calories throught 100 % fruit juice or milk.

Something that helped me a lot during my recovery was to get out with my friends. It will take your mind off of food and dieting. The downside is that you might be faced with situations that include food that makes you uncomfortable, but you can use that to get over those fears.

But congratulations on taking the step and good luck!

I personally don't think it matter how many carbs with get, as long as they are mostly complex and as long as you are getting a good balance of nutrition from protein and fats also.

Weight Loss Should I increase my calorie intake? Jun 02 2009

Yes, you really should up your calorie intake. Right now you aren't even eating enough for a person in a coma to sustain their bodily functions.

Weight Loss Ok got a question if I intake 1300 calories a day May 26 2009
02:37 (UTC)

Well when your weight drops, the energy your body needs also drops. Usually what people do as they see weight loss slowing is to eat at maintenance calories for a while to speed the metabolism back up. But yea, note that when you lose weight, depending on how much, your maintenance calories will be lower.

I totally live by the last sentence of the last poster. An ED takes so many things away from you, so throughout my recovery process I focused on trying to rebuild myself and also improve myself. Once my weight was up, I started hiking for fun again. I also read and wrote a lot. I joined some things through my school. I tried to be more social again too by going out every Friday with a group of friends, either hanging out playing the Wii or going to see a movie.

I'm proud of you for just having the strength to post this, and even more for attempting to help yourself.

Quite frankly though, I think you are at the point where you are going to need some professional help to get to the state of mind that you want to be in. That would require a serious conversation with your family to let them know you need some help, or so they can at least make sure you are eating right. Your weight isn't in a danger zone now, but it could get to that point and that's something they need to take seriously. Catching eating disorders head on is important to recovery. Don't wait too long to seek help. If you can't get your family to listen, perhaps talk to your guidance counselor at school?

Mine is about 450 calories. It's my biggest meal too. I like a lot of breakfast foods lol. I couldn't ever imagine that making me sick though, unless I filled it with a bunch of low calorie foods. I usually have oatmeal or something with PB toast and a piece of fruit.

Actually, 3500 calories are in a pound.

Aside from that, yes, you should up your intake. The 1300 intake may work nicely for a while, but it will be harder to lose weight once your body adjusts to it. Definitely follow thmheh's advice and go for 1500 to about 1800.
