Calorie Count is probably recommending so little because you typed in an unrealistic goal date. Be safe and don`t deprive yourself, if you have a history with dieting you know how easy it is to yo-yo. You wouldn`t want to come back from your holiday heavier than you are now, would you? |

As harsh as this might sound: The easier it is for him to let go of what you had, the less he cared about it, and the easier it should be for you to move onto another person who will hopefully care more. When I was a teen, I couldn`t imagine that the other person could feel differently when in my heart it all seemed perfect. It took me forever to get this lesson through my head, but it was worth it. Now I can go through fall outs without blaming the other person for the rest of eternity, regardless of how much it tears me up inside. I wish you all the best and hope you learn as much from the experience as you possibly can. |

I can`t be best buddies with a guy unless we`ve been in a relationship before and stayed friends. Because then I know for sure why we are not meant to be, and my mind doesn`t go astray at all, on any level, when we hang out, sleepover or not. But different things work for different people, and that`s just me. |

I always thought it was because a much greater majority of vegetarians are better educated in terms of nutrition (research most likely comes along with the choice, you know?). As opposed to many meat eaters who will just eat anything being marketed as edible. |

I`ve been sweating way more since I got fitter, even though my endurance is better. I always blamed it on drinking much more water nowadays. |

What I think is that your weight loss has helped you become more confident. Men (well, human beings in general) who are looking purely for sex will shamelessly go for people who appear insecure and play on their weaknesses in order to get what they want with little to no effort. On the other hand, those who are not scared to invest in something deep and complex will probably enjoy the challenge and gratification that an assertive partner provides. |

meryl, I am pretty sure that even the most sensible of people will unconsciously distort their perception on what a normal helping of food is, if everyone around them is consuming way more than needed. That`s why I am ever so thankful I don`t live in the US. (no offense to anyone) |

Dairy also is pretty rich in protein (and the low or no fat kind has less calories). Even beans on whole wheat toast is yummy with a bit of salsa. Or your own homemade hummus (if you want to make it low cal use as little oil as possible). Another thing I do is add a lot of soy flour to my morning homemade pancakes/pita bread. I even go as far as 50% soy flour, though it does make things more dense and chewy, so if you`re a fan of fluffness I would recommend sticking to a couple tablespoons per cup of wheat flour or something along those lines. |

Spot on, picchi. Also, OP, don`t forget that most people who are not happy with their bodies need to constantly delude themselves with justifications such as 'I prefer being overweight and enjoying life rather than starve myself', as if those two are the only options they have, and they are making the wiser choice. Ignorance is bliss for too many, unfortunately. |

My approach to this issue is quite logical: if I`m working out in the AM, breakfast will be my most consistent meal; conversely, if I exercise in the afternoon, it`s lunch; and if it`s in the evening, I`ll have a large dinner. If I have my physical activity evenly spread out through the day (for instance, walking around sightseeing) I will also spread out my meals evenly. Once you think about it, it makes perfect sense. I mean, why have a huge breakfast if you go to the gym after work? By the time you get there, the energy boost will be long gone, and your performance will be affected accordingly. It`s not that difficult to plan as it sounds, either, especially if you are planning your meals and activity in advance. You can eat the same 3 meals you normally would and just rotate them, like having lunch for dinner and dinner for lunch instead. |

| Maintaining | Maintaining query....how do you work out how much to eat??? | Aug 21 2009 14:00 (UTC) |

Also, as with weight loss, I`ve found that zig zagging calories is a good idea, and unavoidable if you`re trying to acquire an intuitive eater mindset (which is the ultimate maintaining goal, IMHO). Meaning, if an average adult eats 2000 cals/day to maintain, it`s perfectly alright to eat 1500 one day and 2500 the next. Ideally, this should not be done consciously, but rather you should be paying attention to your body`s correct appetite signals. If you`ve been undereating for a while, you should feel rather ravenous at some point, and if you`ve been overeating a lot, you`ll most likely not feel that hungry and go for lighter meals. Of course, this takes a LOT of time, patience and determination to master. At least for me it`s sometimes hard to separate the signals that come from new, healthy habits from the ones that come from an improper upbringing. But I`m still learning and improving myself, albeit painstakingly slowly. *sigh* |

My gym also has a swimming pool, so there usually are some people who are just sitting around in the water, watching the people in the gym as if they were putting on a show or something. Sometimes they will even make sarcastic comments or hit on me. I find it sad and funny at the same time. Also, I have NEVER seen a girl in the locker shower without their bathing suit on, even at peak times. And most look at me funny when I take all my clothes off. What`s up with that? We`re all women and share the same anatomy last time I checked. I mean, it`s not like I prance around and do the shin splits or something, just take my clothes off in front of the shower, get in, get out, towel dry, put my clothes back on. Is that the ultimate faux pas? |

Hey. Good for you for not giving into peer pressure and finishing the food you didn`t want or need. You should be proud of building new healthy habits and sticking to them. Besides, I have a few friends who can eat "anything they want" and stay super skinny, that usually translates to skipping breakfast and/or lunch and eating junk food for dinner. Yikes! Nutrition level there - absolute zero. I`d hate to be them in 10-20 years when they reap the effects of this atrocious diet. As for you and your friend, next time, I suggest one of two things, depending on how close you two are and how much you value her approval. One is to ask for a doggie bag for the leftovers and say something like 'This has sure been delicious, but I`m seriously stuffed since I started watching what I eat and having normal portion sizes. I guess I`ll save the leftovers for later so as not to waste food!'. Of course, you can just throw them away afterwards if you want. The other is pretty much what I do. Look her in the eye with confidence and ask something along the lines of 'If you are happy with your choices, how come you are so concerned about mine?'. Act genuinely surprised, but don`t appear weak. I find this intimidates even the most pushy and rude of people. Best of luck to you!

Thanks for the helpful info, everyone! My own fresh mozzarella does sound lovely, but I`m a bit worried as I can`t seem to master portion control when it comes to cheese.. However, I usually have just one cup of milk a day, in the morning, and I`m guessing that the 60 extra calories of fat won`t make or break my day. Especially if there are a lot of added benefits when it comes to nutrition and taste. |

I go to the gym around twice a week for strength training. The only indoor cardio I do is some form of aerobics (step, dance or tae bo), also around twice a week. But there`s a catch. I use my bike to get me anywhere and everywhere. So that`s around 30-60 mins of cardio each day, every day. I listen to my body and give myself days off when I need them. I usually just do some light walking on those days. |

Original Post by liposuctioned: They were too busy arguing. I just wanted to say the same. Those stats put you at a BMI of 20.3, which is very slim and pretty close to underweight. That means that if these other women are much skinnier, they are probably at an unhealthy weight and carry risks for developing so many diseases and conditions that those size 0 pants better be darn worth it.. |

As the saying goes, the best exercise routine is the one you stick to. ;) Some people prefer to do roughly the same exercise over and over, usually for a well determined purpose (couch25k, marathon runners etc.). Others, who are just focused on improving overall fitness, might or might not get bored easily, and thus need variety and switching it up.

Original Post by kkempinski: kkempinski, I think you pretty much hit the nail on the head here, and I am actually right up there next to you. dplatzer, it`s crucial to assess whether you want to have a relationship RIGHT NOW with anybody, or at any time it might happen with A SPECIAL SOMEBODY. There are different approaches and tactics to each of those needs, and (speaking from personal experience) they don`t mix very well in practice, in that they don`t yield any satisfactory results - just like it`s happening to you right now. |

If you`re that worried, best thing to do is get most of your nutrition from foods that are "obviously" healthy. And by that I mean it hasn`t been contested so far. Most of the stuff that`s been given a bad rep is not essential to fulfill your dietary needs anyhow. |

| Foods | Carob or Chocolate? | Aug 14 2009 20:38 (UTC) |

The calories are not that far off from each other, as far as I remember. My suggestion as a top secret alternative to chocolate is.. *drum roll* chocolate! Only the high cocoa content one. A general consensus around here is to aim for more than 70% cocoa. For me personally the rule is to have sugar as far down the list of ingredients as possible. Don`t worry that the calorie content for this kind of chocolate is slightly higher, it is because the refined sugar, which is bad for you, actually lowers the calorie count, but brings you no nutritional value. After getting used to the taste, you won`t find yourself going back to regular milk chocolate. And a piece or two will be enough to satisfy your cravings, not to mention that the splurge on fine, high quality chocolate will make it feel like a real classy treat, as opposed to a sugary guilt trip. |

Harsh as it may sound, I think that if he`s a keeper and the relationship is going anywhere, 1. you should be able to openly (but calmly and respectfully) voice your concerns and 2. he should be willing to go the extra mile to reach a place where you are both happy. Mind you, this should also work the other way around as well. ;) |

That is so funny, I am exactly the same.. but I do tend to forget that all those calories add up in the end, rather than 'expire' after a certain amount of time. (that would be great, wouldn`t it? :D) But anyway, back to the original question. I`ve found I am most tempted to eat foods I am not allowing myself, or that I restrict to very small portions. So now I just tell myself 'Yes, you can have it, as much as you want of it. But you`re smarter than that. Still want it?' This most likely does the trick, I mean, who wants to be considered stupid? In the event that it doesn`t work I`ll have the tiniest little bite possible and if I am tempted to eat more I tell myself 'I already know what it tastes like, and it`s not good for me, so there`s no real reason to eat more.'.

Hi! I just want to reinforce some of the very good points that bosox made, and maybe chip in with little somethings too. Make it about health (activity and nutrition) rather than calories. Know what the "better" food choices are: lots of veggies and fruit, legumes, lean meats, fish, eggs, dairy, whole grains nuts and seeds. Keep the refined sugar and white flour to a minimum. Go for steamed/grilled rather than deep fried, and try to eat as much food made from scratch as you can, and as little as possible of fast food or prepackaged overly processed stuff. A good rule of thumb is to go for stuff with 5 or less ingredients at the supermarket. Also, replace soda with water and unsweetened tea. These are some basic guidelines, if you do a bit of reading on these forums and other external links, you will have a good grasp of what proper nutrition is in no time at all. Remember, it is good to be knowledgable, but don`t let yourself become obsessive. The most important piece of advice I have for you is to stay active. Choose hobbies or jobs that have you moving around for the most part. Make it fun! It doesn`t have to be a gym if you`re not into that - it can be a team sport, some lessons of something you`ve always wanted to do, the possibilities are endless. Anyway, I have no idea what your current lifestyle is like and if the things I suggested seem like too big changes. In that case, just take little baby steps. Trust me, building new habits is not as difficult as it seems, especially at a young age. |

| Weight Loss | low calories or high calories? | Aug 09 2009 16:33 (UTC) |

Hi! CC`s calculator is not devised for teens (people under 21), so I believe the bare minimum for you would be 1500 cals/day (when absolutely sedentary, i.e. at bed rest). Obviously the need for less calories doesn`t happen overnight on your 21st birthday, so this is a bit iffy. But what I can tell you for sure is that as a 23 year old who is 5'3 and weighs 115ish, also exercising for 1h/day, I need about 2200-2300 to maintain. You are taller, heavier and younger than me, which all equate to you needing more calories. My personal opinion is that you could lose weight steadily and nicely at around 2000/day. |
