Original Post by merylwhite1:

I have recently been diagnosed with ADD (I'm 22) and am taking Ritalin for it, which has totally transformed my life - I can concentrate, think straight, focus on one thing, no more mind running crazy on me. Although I wasn't diagnosed as a child my diagnosis was like a lightbulb going on. Like, AHA! My weird habits and behaviour suddenly made a whole lot more sense.

I had a FREAKY experience with Ritalin, I felt like I was dying when I took it...it's like the whole world pulled a fat cord off my brain and everything went too quiet...then my pulse started racing...spooky...I asked my mom to watch me as I was falling asleep incase I ended up dead, imagine a grown woman having her mom waiting on her till she falls asleep lmao...honestly, spooky....I'm talking to my pscyh and might try Concerta or Adderall instead. I tried doing it the drug-free way, I swear, but I'm 24 and I just can't afford to mess up my life anymore just because this brain won't calm down. I do take alot of coffee, 3 cups a day, it used to work good and I feel more alert after having a cup of coffee before my lectures, for eg. Sadly it doesn't really work anymore. I just hope I won't have to stay on meds forever, I hate the thought of that as I've always been anti-drug taking for it like sarah_b.

btw merylwhite1, checked your profile and saw that you're in malaysia, who's the psychiatrist who prescribed you the ritalin? I'm in kl btw that's why I'm asking :p

cool that's even more awesome...I finally joined a gym a couple months ago and it's one of the best decisions I've ever made...let me know how it goes! I got measured there and woo hoo I'm skinny fat lol...nah I'm not skinny actually, I'm at a good weight, but I could do with just a wee bit more muscle and alot less fat..working on it :p

dimishushi,

my scale's an Omron, and it's the only one I have so I can't really comment on other scales...it has a hand held thingy and you can measure your body fat% on it too, they also give you your BMR and BMI which is pretty cool...I'm loving my scale, I've had it for over 2 yrs now. It's pretty accurate and I get the same reading for my body fat when I use the gym's BIA scale.

I am jumping back and forth between the 120s and 130s like hopscotch! 129 this morning, 130 yesterday, etc. It's all good though, I do think quite often about the size I used to be and how wee I am now.

desert_rose: thanks for the tips, my bowels seem to have calmed down now, haha. I eat very clean anyway, mostly vegetarian, and cook every night. (even in exams, blah) This week I have had: mackerel and kidney bean salad, aubergine parmiagiana (layers of aubergine, mozzarella and homemade tomato sauce), savoy cabbage and mushroom bake, mexican style rice and beans and salsa... I did have a burger on monday but it was a homemade one with couscous and salad, yum. I was wondering about the laxative tea though... do you think it's a good idea? I am reluctant to do anything unhealthy, but I am generally quite constipated (depsite the relentless water and vegetables!)

hi miso_soup (I love miso soup!): your exercise programme sounds great! I am in the middle of exam hell, I am barely keeping up with my walking, let along my skipping and weights. And it's torrential rain this morning, sigh.

claudiek: hiya and congrats on your v. slender weight! I had a stab at "maintenance" a couple of months back (I was only a lb or two lighter than I am now) and found it so stressful I had to buy scales, after losing 50lb just by being good and sensible and weighing myself sporadically! So give me any good maintenance tips you have... I would really like to maintain at around 125lb, when I get there. I know everyone thinks that's enormous, but I just don't want to lose the good bits of my figure! Also at my height (5'3") it's a BMI of 22, which feels reassuringly far from both under- and over-weight. Lots of room for manouvring!

jocalo: hope your surgery went ok.

wow...you cook...your dishes sound yummy...you should post up your recipes :p...I envy your discipline...honestly, I'm way too lazy to cook even on weekends. You really don't have to take any laxatives if you're managing your constipation fine just by eating lots of veges, fruits and hi-fibre stuff. When it gets bad (like if you haven't poo-ed for 2-3 days straight), I dunno, herbal laxative tea is alot gentler on the tummy than chemical ones.

I used to get really bad constipation a couple years back where I wouldn't be able poo for 2-3 days in a row, had to drink laxative tea weekly to force the poo out! That's really bad...but I haven't been constipated since over a year ago...the only difference I made in my diet that made me stop constipating was cutting out white bread, white flour and white rice and going for multi-grain breads, pasta and crackers instead (and milk...milk makes me poo! I never used to drink any before)...the last time I had to take a laxative tea was a year ago...I'm embarrassed to admit it but there are days (busy days esp) where I don't take in any fruits and veges, and I know that's bad, but I'm still going to the toilet regularly thank God...constipation sucks I swear...I'm glad those days are over! I hope yours will be over soon too!

I'm alot like Jpoage's hubby in that I make lists for everything too, and I keep a whole stack of notebooks and calenders...obsessed with having calenders taped up everywhere to remind me of important deadlines. I space out ALOT, as a kid teachers have always called me lazy and daydreamy eventhough I had a high IQ for my age. Some not so very nice people have called me weird to my face quite a few times in my life, so I've managed to stay away from building close friendships. I have a mad ass mind and sometimes I love it, though I'm hating the symptoms of not being able to control this beautiful, crazy-busy mind. I'm also extremely messy, I am obsessed with being organized although I'm a FAR CRY from it. My room and bag pack look like a tornado's  hit it, and I've changed majors at Uni atleast 5 times (which is why, I, at 24 am still studying) because I was so fascinated with so many things, but at the same time I get bored too easily. I've misplaced and lost various objects (3 handphones!) so far, so I tend not to take too cash with me when I go out. I haven't learnt how to drive, simply because my dad fears me losing focus on the road, then things could get really dangerous. I fear for my future alot, like I'll never be able to settle down or something. I can't say I hate having a 'busy' mind, because I love it, I 'hyper-focused' when I was writing my novel, and managed to finish over half of it in less than 48 hours...that's a whole lot of writing, I barely ate, slept and didn't even shower during that duration of time. Don't ask me where the dang book is now, after finishing half of it I just lost interest somehow. Then there's the thing with music, I can't listen to the same song for over a minute, and movies are great when it's a movie which has concepts I'm particularly interested in...otherwise I don't really do movies. And that's how the dice rolls for me. I need to get it under control. It's nice to know that I'm not the only one.

I'd say I've developed quite a talent in hiding my ADD from the public eye, I've turned 'pretending to listen' to an art...I've become so damn good at it that people can't even tell that I'm not paying attention to half of what they say. My reading is so much better than my listening though...it's almost like there are huge cottonballs stuffed between my ears and my brain, and my brain wants to stand on its own or leave my body because it's too full and heavy and busy to cooperate with the rest of me.

You can get it done in most gyms...what I used to do a few years ago (before I was interested in joining a gym) was walk into a gym, pretend to be interested in joining, then they'd offer to get my body fat% checked for free. They usually use BIA scales, and some use calipers...but I believe BIA scales are good enough for average people, even though athletes with very low body fat (body builders, runners, etc) may get a less accurate reading.

Welcome miso_soup...argh I was on anti-depressants 3 years ago, I wasn't taking it to treat depression, but my psych presibed it to me to treat my ADD (how weird is that??)...I noticed a slight weight gain after that too. btw..girl, get a scale, or atleast a tape measure...you have to be able to measure your progress :p

You seem to be doing great and your exercise program looks good, I agree with adding more weights sessions, 2 days is a week is the general minimum so far, and HIIT sounds great.

Which reminds me, last night I started my first HIIT session ever. I went out and brisk-walked/jogged then ran like the frickin wind, then brisk walked/jog, etc, for 10 mins...my lungs felt like they were going to burst and I was breathing hard and heavy, my mom thought I was having a heart attack..lol...But this morning I weighed myself and I'm at 128.5 pounds!!! I've been stuck at 130-132 for weeks now!! This is exciting!!

When I was 218 pounds my stats were around 47-41-47...I was 14 and 5'4...what size is that? I know I wore size 41 jeans at the time, but I never kept track of my dress size, since I was always hiding under bulky sweaters and men's t-shirts and jeans/slacks...I wear size 28-29 jeans now, so yay for that.

I envy you...you smoke only a few cigs a day and none on some days....that's pretty damn good...it shouldn't be too hard for you too quit, so you can do it :D...Maybe you can further reduce that to say a couple times a week? You have so much better self-control than I do, I do 1 pack a day. Maybe tell your boyfriend not to smoke when you're there, and tell him to hide the cigs so you're not tempted to smoke that much?

Fitness Confused: Can you build muscle and lose weight at the same time? May 13 2009

I don't know if this is possible either...it hasn't happened to me...but I did manage to lose fat while maintaining all my muscle mass, so I know that keeping muscle is possible if you only have a few pounds of fat to lose (say 5 to 10 pounds), but I don't know if you can gain muscle while losing fat, theoretically it's impossible since when on a weight loss program you're on a calorie deficit, and you need to be eating on a surplus to gain muscle...but I've heard that it has happened with some people (probably beginners or genetic freaks or ppl on steroids).

What you can do is lose the fat first while maintaining your muscle, then start building muscle and eating at surplus after that. Continue lifting weights on both programs (fat loss and muscle building).

Why did I start smoking again? I didn't have a good enough reason to quit I guess :( ...plus I love smoking more than I love running, and my sister (we live together) smokes too, so...you get the picture...aghh...I really enjoy smoking, that's my problem...taking a long drag out of my cig after a long hard day is just the most relaxing thing ever...

but I really shouldn't think about it that way anymore...I try to look at anti-smoking sites with all the gross pictures in it...have you tried just grossing yourself out that way? It doesn't work because I'm reaching for a cigarette as I'm staring at those pics in utter horror...it's too ironic.

You know I tried by weaning myself off, but it doesn't work...so far the only way to go for me is cold turkey, especially since I have surgery coming up, I'm not supposed to have any nicotine at all (that means no gums or patches either).

atleast now I do have a reason to quit...my surgery!! so yay for that I guess...now I only hope I don't start smoking again after my surgery.

Hey, you know we should try and come up with creative ways to quit smoking....I'm going to get a piggy bank and put my 'cigarette money' in it instead of buying a pack a day...I should get a new hobby too to distract me from smoking.

Gothic_beauty, maybe you're feeling overweight because of your body fat %? Have you ever had it checked? I know that there are girls at already low weights, BMIs of 19 to 21 but with high body fat for their weight, hence they often complain about being 'fat' or 'flabby' even with their small frames...a fit and healthy body fat percent for a woman is around 20%-24%...anything over 32% is considered 'obese' or overfat...if you feel like you're, for eg., skinny fat at BMI's of 19-21, lifting weights can help tighten things up and give you a sleeker silhouette even though your weight stays the same or increases a little.

However, if you're already at a good BF% and at a good weight, then it most definately is all in your head :p Can't blame you though, we all strive for perfection...just do it the right way, and not by restricting calories :)

I've unsuccessfully quit smoking twice in my life...I started smoking 5 years ago and the longest I've been without a cigarette since then was 1 month (when I tried to quit unsuccessfully). I really need to quit as I'm booked in for surgery in mid-July. I've set my quit date to 20th May, I'm going to go cold turkey, no patches or gum or anything, I'm planning to replace smoking with exercise...the last time I quit because I started running, and smoking really affected my stamina, so I quit and performed much better with my lungs clean. I hope I can do it this time, going into surgery as a smoker is dangerous...and the thought of having complications during my surgery really scares me. My biggest weakness is ciggies and coffee (I don't drink alcohol), I can drink up to 3-4 cups of coffee a day and a pack of cigs a day...it's amazing that my teeth are still white...it's funny though, when I quit smoking before, I stopped drinking coffee too and went for a cup of tea a day instead.

Weight Loss Body Fat Scales... May 13 2009
05:46 (UTC)

I have one at home...they're not exactly accurate, but they work pretty well for me...I get the same results with my own scale at home and the BIA scale at the gym (just a little off by 0.2-0.3%)...make sure you keep the surface of the scale clean and dust free, and having clean damp feet (and clean damp hands if you have the Omron scale with the hand held thingy) before stepping on the scale registers the most accurate results. So I always wet my feet and hands a little before using my scale. Oh, also make sure you have your correct height, gender etc stored in the scale's memory, that affects the results too.

Maybe I'll learn to use calipers someday, measuring skin folds are however not accurate either even though they may be more accurate than using scales...the only accurate way to measure your body fat is to actually dissect your body, then remove and weigh all the fat you have, but you'd have to be a cadaver before that can happen lol...anyways, the scale is working well enough for me for now and I'm quite happy with it.

Hey bairn, congrats! lol...it's not silly and I know what it feels like hehe....my measurements are crazy...I measure differently at different times of the day, I think it has to do with water retention...currently I'm 35.5-26.5-37.5...sometimes I find my hips get down to 37, sometimes my waist gets up to 27...it's frustrating.

Tips...well, I'm living off supposedly 'healthy cereal', dried fruits, skimmed milk and tuna since I hate to cook, but I know I have to if I'm going to eat clean...I'm cooking me atleast 10oz of nice lean chicken breast tonight, then I'm storing it in the fridge...it should last about 3-4 days, you just pop it in the microwave to eat it, can't beat that for simplicity. As for veges, I just steam them, or stir fry when I'm in the mood. Tofu is a convenient food too, it doesn't really need to be cooked, you just pop it in the microwave, or stir fry with a little soy sauce and some veges.

Take more veges if you're constipated, faeces actually weigh quite alot, so don't be suprised if you end up 2 pounds lighter once all the poo has left your system...a mild herbal laxative tea, should fix your constipation if you haven't gone to the bathroom in quite awhile...you don't really need to stay away from meat, just continue eating prunes (I've been told to take a few prunes with a warm glass of h20 before bedtime when I was constipated) and eat those veges...and drink loads of water ofcourse :p

jocalo, I've been slipping a little too, I haven't exercised in 4 days now though I have been managing my calories...I'm hitting the gym today though, I was hoping to exercise 5-6 times a week...ergh...don't worry about eating maintenance calories for a couple days it could even help you bust through your plateau...I'm kinda scared of losing focus too...I'm on a one week break from uni, and laziness is seeming to settle in :( I'm taking care of that today, time to pump some iron and get moving.

Welcome nire00 and lemoneko007!!

nire00, my aim was also 21% body fat...I'm at 28% now...I'm thinking of getting to 23% and see how I like it...I don't want to lose my boobs too much :( and even at 28% BF they're already starting to look 'deflated' ergh.

lemoneko007...we have exactly the same stats! I'm having trouble with my food intake too, mainly because I get lazy to cook....I need to start cooking stuff in advance...like chicken breast fillets for eg....otherwise I end up reaching for canned alternatives, and too much canned food (esp on a daily basis) has made me break out.

Anyways I'm off now, good luck everyone!

This actually scares the crap out of me.  I'm 32 and I have another 32 pounds to lose (I'm down 8), and I'm not infrequently mistaken for a teenager.  I have a fairly round face, and so far I'm happy with the weight I've lost in my face.  The double chin is nearly gone.  But I have this fear that once all the extra fat is gone from my face, I'll start to look my age, and will therefore never look like I'm in my twenties.  Aside from a brief period when I was 17-18 after being ill, I have never been at a healthy weight, and I sometimes wonder if the reason I look so much younger than I am is because of the fat in my face.  It's not enough of a reason to stop losing weight, but it's depressing to think about.  Guess I'll just have to cross my fingers.

lol...I know what you mean...I look more my age (twenties) when I start losing weight, but when I'm a little heavier I get asked which high school I go to, and I enjoy getting suprised looks when I tell them I'm 24...I'll miss that alot. Don't worry about about your face! I'm sure you'll look just fine :) if you're really worried about looking too different on your face, then stay in the mid-higher range of your healthy BMI.

goodness...I'd think the above would be true for one night stands, or hormonally charged male teens. Most men do tell me they'd prefer a pretty face then a hot body in a relationship, since they'll be looking at her face all the time...and having a not-so-great body can always be fixed with dim lighting while making love, anyone can look beautiful by candlelight lol, it's romantic too.

Hey feedmeair...start a good weight lifting if you're not already on it, that'll help raise your metabolism so you can maintain your weight more easily, and eat balanced and clean, no starving, otherwise you'll just gain fat and lose muscle, and all hell breaks loose from there on, I've been through it :(...what did you do to be able to get down to 124? I'd love to get there in the next couple of months...I'm currently fluctuating between 131 and 130, it's really frustrating...I can't wait to bust through this stupid plateau.

most VS models DON'T have implants... and if you look at them close enough, most have really small boobs. It just seems like they should have large boobs but they really don't...

nah...they do, most of them anyways, not all...ofcourse there are skinny women out there with boobs...but a trained eye can tell between what's natural and what's not, and what most of them have stuffed into the chests are not natural :) (the well known ones like tyra banks, seal's wife, and this other woman I forgot her name...her ripples were caught in pictures) you can tell whether a woman's got fake boobs by the way the breasts look when they're lying on their backs, and sometimes you can even see a few ripples from the implant edges...ofcourse those get photoshopped out in the ads, but you tend to see those in candid shots during the photo shoot where the model is in her bikini/lingerie and getting all prepped up. A slight increase in breast size will not give them 'big boobs', just small, neat ones that help to make their chest area look less bony, some ofcourse opt for bigger C cup sized implants.

Besides, what's wrong with getting implants anyways if you have the moolah for it...so yeah, again I'll say it, most VS models have had implants, even the dangerously skinny Giselle has implants. It's no big deal. Getting implants for them millionaire celebs is like us regular folks getting a facial, or a manicure. My mom got implants when she was in her twenties, nobody had a clue, not even her own husband or her family members, they looked really natural and this was over 20 years ago, imagine how much better implants have gotten since then, so like I said it takes a trained eye to be able to tell (ie. a plastic surgeon).

Meh...I think it's more likely that we attract and get attracted to people who look like us, rather than people who look like our parents, my brother's skinny and he mostly goes for delicate looking skinny girls (mom's curvy), though he wouldn't mind curvier girls as long as their hot...lol...btw, I knew a guy once who was so freakishly similar to me, people would mistake us for siblings because we had similar eyes, face structure, hair...he didn't have boobs and he was taller and skinner, but he did have a nice goatee...we even share the same birthday date (though he was a couple years older)!!! we also had the same interests (and I have some weird ass interests let me tell you), same tastes in music, movies and even food, and yeah we both love to write songs and draw silly caricatures of random people...it was creepy!! freaking creepy, eventhough I'd be lying if I said I didn't find him attractive. Funny thing is, we were so much alike that it just ended up too weird and we just remained friends...I mean, what if he turns out to be my long lost brother or something...haha.

FACE!   You can dress to cover body flaws.

Reminds me of a situation -some years ago I had just moved to Florida. I was in line at a grocery store behind a woman dressed in short shorts, halter top(couldn't see her face) who had a great body! and beautiful long, blonde, wavy hair.  I was starting to feel jealous...when she turned around..I almost dropped my teeth! her face was OLD and wrinkled! What a shock!

As you get older, that little bit of padding in your face will be welcomed.

There's a lady at my gym who's like that too!! I swear she has the best body in our gym, totally cellulite free, tight body etc...but her face is all gaunt and wrinkled...no idea how old she is...her face and body are about 20-30 decades apart from each other, but dammn I admire how dedicated she is with her fitness program.

When my mum started losing weight she said she didn't want to lose too much for that precise reason. And I absolutely agree with her. Once you hit a certain age your face needs a bit of plumpness to remain looking youthful. And you can't have it all (even Madonna looks awful without all the help, like a piece of grizzle!).

And remember, guys won't be looking at your hips or slight muffin top when they first speak to you, they'll be looking at your face, and I know they'd rather tolerate a gorgeous bird on their arm with a little more curvature than an old, scrawny hag!

That's true...although I do see it on young women in their twenties too, my sister and mom are like that, they have delicate, oval faces and actually look beautiful when they're heavier, and their faces start too look skinny when they lose weight...I don't get gaunt though I have enough fat on my face to last me awhile lol....I prefer my face fuller for some reason...when I lose weight, my cheekbones and jawline take on a sharper, more angular look, it's supposed to be a stronger, more sophisticated kind of look I suppose...but then people start comparing me to sandra bullock (I do think she's gorgeous though)...and that's when I'd really start missing my chubby cheeks, they've sorta been a trademark of mine....hehe....

I'm really influenced by models, but I really dislike the ones that a lot of people seem to like.  The ones with boobs and asses "curves."   I used to love them the most and wanted to be like that, but I don't even have as much curviness at BMI 22 as they do at 19 or whatever they are.  So for me... that kind of beauty is completely unrealistic.  Maybe i'm just biased, but I think that for most people those sorts of models are even more unrealistic than the super-skinnies.  Honestly, they have a lot of muscle and like 5 percent body fat on it... that's even harder to achieve than "skeletal."  And if I got as slim as them I'd need implants.  Sigh.

I don't really like skinny models with boobs and asses either...you're right about their bodies being even more unrealistic than the typical catwalk skinnies. Most VS models (and swimsuit/lingerie models in general) have fake boobs for instance, so I don't really feel like that they're all that special, they're just really tall, thin girls with fake boobs, period...Natural and normal looking girls with nice feminine proportions are the ones I admire and wanted to be like...not into tall and skinny, since I'm not tall nor would I like to be skinny :/

gi-jane: What if a person was willing to sacrifice calories to maintain a lower weight? Is it really so unhealthy?

Yes.... it is.  Because the effort to be an artificially low weight involves chronic malnutrition which has medical implications.  This article about actress Britt Ekland is a case in point... http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/health/5004992.stm   her willingness to 'sacrifice a few calories' to keep a low weight left her with a diagnosis of osteoporosis (a condition that usually affects old ladies) at 53.

I checked out the link...wow...aside from eating too little calories, definately never cut out dairy products like the woman did when she was younger, atleast she could have taken calcium supplements or something...I can imagine vegans are more prone to osteoporosis than ovo-lacto vegetarians or us regular omnivores. I don't think I can live without milk, I drink 3 glasses a day (low fat ofcourse :p)...some ppl tell me milk isn't good because of...I don't exactly remember what it was...oh well whatever it is...I love my milk.

The guys I've been attracted to could pass off as my brothers

Actually I was just saying to my friend yesterday there was some theory that quite a few women were attracted to partners who had similar facial structures and features (applies to me). Also, this could be related to the fact that subconsciously some women find men who mildly resemble their father aesthetically pleasing (sounds very weird and a little gross to hear but if you look closely you might find that has happened!)

Yep! I've read that somewhere too...I don't look like my dad though and he's more on the short side...but he does have the most amazing bassy voice (had his own band back in his hey days), probably the reason why I go for guys with masculine voices...I mean, a guy could look like Brad Pitt for all I care, but if he speaks in a high pitched or wimpy tone of voice, that's a serious turn off for me, on the other hand, a guy could be fat or skinny or average looking, but if he's got a good deep voice on him and says the right stuff, I'd find him pretty sexy.

I think we girls associate our dads (or any dominant male figure that's been present in our childhood) with masculinity, it's somewhere in our subconcious mind that 'this is how a man is supposed to look/sound/act like' before we even had a clue as to what sexuality or attraction is.

I'm not too sure if the same applies to boys with their mothers though. It is definitely true that some of them immediately seek a replacement mother figure as soon as they leave home. But yeah, back on topic the weird thing with me is that I tend to favour guys who resemble my dad physiologically but has my mother's colourings of fair skin and blue eyes. Weird, but fascinating! Then again, if a guy's attractive then he's attractive. They don't have to hit every one of my criteria boxes because that's practically impossible (and almost too good to be true!).

according to this link it seems to apply to guys too...lol:

now, about the 'hitting every single criteria box' part...lol...you're right...I mean I'm sure the world's full of great guys (I'm not being sarcastic here, I've met some really decent guys so I know they're out there!), I just want someone I can feel comfortable with...he doesn't have to be perfect, he just has to 'fit' me somehow...I guess I'll know it when I see it hehe...right now I'm just jamming along to John Mayer's Love Song For No One...that's like my current theme song where my love life is concerned lol.

Weight Loss Are any of you 5'4-5'6 and plateauing at ~130 pounds?? :D May 10 2009

Hey bairn! sure you can join....I don't wanna get skinny either, I just have a major cellulite problem I'd like to fix (it's the thighs and upper arms I hate...mainly the thighs though), and I really want to drop another dress size. So I need lots of weight training and some high intensity cardio to slim down and tighten things up. And yeah that 130 pound barrier needs a swift kick in the **** grrr...lol...it's probably psychological, but I know I'd look better and feel happier without the jiggly thighs, and those are always the last to go for me....my mind is so set on obtaining a BMI of 20-21, I can almost taste it, so if you're happy with losing a few pounds then go for it!

Well, check back in with us and log your weight/measurements in every week...weigh in day is any day of the week you want it to be...good luck girl!
