No.  Diuretics cause you to excrete water and sodium from the body, (and potassium indirectly).  Whenever you lose water, you will lose sodium, and vise versa.  Water and sodium are drawn to each other, and where one goes, the other follows.  That is why when you eat a lot of sodium, you feel bloated.
Original Post by kmleela:

I was surprised to read someone's post last night regarding diuretics. One of the responders claims that diuretics actually dehydrate your body, causing you to retain water. Is this true? I have been taking a prescribed diuretic for about 18 months to keep my blood pressure in check, and have at times increased it to off-set eating more sodium. Could the scale be reflecting water retention...water retention caused by a pill that I thought would be ridding me of excess water?

I appreciate all your responses!

Thanks!

Most will say not to weigh every day, however, there was a study done that showed that those who weighed every day lost more weight/maintained their weight better than those who weighed once a week.  The thought behind it was that when they were weighing daily they were more in tune with the foods that triggered a gain, and were quicker to correct it.

Excellent post, Swimfreak!  Very well said!  :)

Original Post by swimfreak26:

This 1200 calorie thing has gotten way out of hand around here...let me debunk the myth that has been bugging the hell out of me since I got here.

The myth: "You need 1200 calories per day or your body goes into starvation mode and you won't lose weight."

This is said probably 10,000 times a day here. It's true that your body goes into a "starvation" mode if you're under 1200 per day. It's ALSO true however, that if you're burning 1800 calories per day and eating 1799, your body goes into the same "starvation" mode.

Starving your body of EXTERNAL energy is the entire purpose of a diet. When you don't put enough calories into your body, it turns to your fat stores and begins to convert them into usable sources of energy...thus depleting your fat deposits and becoming your primary source of weight loss.

The reason for the 1200 mark is simply that it's been determined at about 1200 calories you can expect to get a balanced diet with the necessary nutrients in sufficient amounts, if you put any effort in at all. Eating 800, 900, or 1000 calories a day can work if you're ensuring that you get all your proper vitamins, essential fatty acids, and essential amino acids (by way of complex proteins). There is just a ton of effort and planning that have to go into making this work, and therefore it's not feasible for an average person...hence, "eat 1200 and you've got a pretty good chance at maintaining a healthy life style, while losing weight (since even the smallest people burn 1500+ in a normal day."

I should put a disclaimer in that the starving of your body, mainly from carbohydrates and sugars (a real danger if you're eating too few calories) is a bad thing to do because your red blood cells cannot use the ketone bodies (products of fat catabolism) for energy. Yet another complexity to eating less than 1200 a day. With all that said though, it is not the starving of energy that's bad...that IS A DIET...it's the POTENTIAL and LIKELY starving of essential nutrients.

From a medical perspective, 2 grams per day (2,000mg) is considered a low sodium diet.  Most heart/high blood pressure/renal patients are on a 1g or 2g diet.

I recently read that the average american takes in about 4g per day.

Hope this helps.

Weight Loss Mid 40's, 5'2.5", 134 lbs, goal Feb 21 2008

Hi!

I'm in my mid 30's and my youngest will be 5 in August.  I'm 5'2.5, and my goal is 125 or so.  Right now I'm at 136 (regained when I started nursing school) after losing about 30 pounds in 2006.  I'm definitely an emotional eater, and believe me, the stress of nursing school along with 4 kids doesn't help! LOL!  :)  Thankfully I have a wonderfully supportive and helpful husband.

One thing I've been trying to do recently is when I really want to eat, yet I know I'm not truly hungry, is to get up and do something active for a few minutes.  Jump up and down, do a few curls with light weights, switch the laundry .... something!  That usually allows the craving to pass.

Best wishes to you!

Amy

Mine were completely lost after losing about 30 pounds.  Although I also nursed all 4 of my children.  I finally gave in, after months of not wanting to look in the mirror at my saggy, empty breasts, and had a breast augmentation in May.  I LOVE my new girls!  :)

Skinny-Kitty,

I would think that you most likely are eating a bit too few calories.  Try upping it by 100 for a couple of days, and see how it goes.

I have breastfed my 4 as well.  I just weaned my 3.5 year old in January.  She didn't start eating solid foods until she was about 11 months.

While I was exclusively breastfeeding with her, I was consuming 1800 calories a day, and lost at least two pounds a week.  With your height, I would think you would be able to eat quite a few more calories.  I'm only 5'3.

Lambea -

While you are correct that nursing mothers do need extra fluids, milk is not necessarily one of them.  Many babies are very sensitive to the cow's milk proteins that spill into their mother's milk, and cause digestive upset.

It is also fine to watch your calorie intake while nursing, as long as you increase what you would normally eat by 500 calories for milk production.

:)

I did the same thing for the first 6 months after my loss.  I felt like I was borrowing my new body, and would eventually have to give it back, and take back the chubby one.  Once I passed the 6 month mark, I felt more comfortable, had bought tons of new clothes, and made myself get rid of all the clothes that were too big.

I've actually been thinking about swithcing, and Yasmin, or Yaz would be what I looked to.  However, I'm on ortho-tri-cyclen lo because I get really bad hormonal breakouts about mid cycle.  Do you know if either of those help with breakouts?

Thanks!  :)

I can totally relate.  Over the last two months I have gained 4 pounds during my period.  It drops right back off as soon as it is over.  Look at my weight today, and you'll know that it started yesterday, LOL!

I'm trying Midol this month.  :)

While I don't think that diet pills are for everyone, I also don't agree with the statement that they don't work.

I was prescribed Phentermine by my MD last April.  I lost 33 pounds, and have kept it off for almost year now.

There is no 'magic pill'.  You have to be committed to changing your eating habits and lifestyle, otherwise when the effect of the pill is gone, you will be right back to where you started.

That's a good point.  They do love the apple dippers (they don't dip them, fortunately) from McD's too, so I should just bring them from home.  It was just one of those days with crabby kids, one of them sick, and a weak mommy! LOL!

Actually, you are correct, the frozen yogurt is about 390 in calories.  It is 336.0 grams, which is 1.46 cups x 270 calories per cup = 394.  It is HUGE though, and I can usually only eat half of it.  Thank goodness!  :)

I'm a Chili's fanatic!  I've found I end up eating fewer calories if I get the chicken fajitas (sans the tortillas).  I believe it is only 380 in calories for the whole skillet.  You just have to beware of the tortillas, and sour cream!  :)

No, it's not evil.  Have you checked the portion size?  Once slice is one-quarter of an 18 inch pizza. One slice of pizza could easily make 2-3 meals.  Chicken bake, 2 meals.  Chicken ceasar salad, 2 meals.  Their frozen yogurt is wonderful, and the whole cup only has 280 calories.  Not too bad at all when you're looking for a treat!  As usual, it's about portion size.  :)

I'm 5'2.5 ((yes, I count that half inch!:) ))

I tend to be quite small on the top and heavier in the hips/butt.  I've finally learned to embrace my butt!  LOL!  (that sounded strange!)  My DH LOVES my butt, and since losing weight it has shrunk considerably.  I sometimes wish I could lose more in my hips, without losing my butt.  :)

I'm glad it is just not me that it happens to!  On Saturday Hubby and I were traveling, and ate at Burger King, for the first time in months.  Later that night I awoke to horrible, horrible stomach cramps.  I feel like my body just couldn't handle all the fat/calories!  Needless to say, I won't be doing that again!  EWW!
