Bacardi is rum... rum is made with sugar. it cant have zero cals...

UNLESS they found a way to make calorie free alcohol, in which case, I'm quitting my job and retiring to full-on alcoholism.

Just kidding.
Fitness How the heck to I trim my thighs? Feb 26 2007

Do you belong to a gym?

If so... there are great machines for your inner & outer thighs...

If not, you could do lunges, scissor kicks, squats, etc...

But I think what would make the most difference is cardio, if youare looking to "shrink them down." You'll have to stick with the cardio to get your desired size and mix in the weights to tone them up! Unfortunately, you can't spot-reduce.

I get this on the elliptical as well.  It can be a little scary... I'm out of breath here, I dont need to be choking on top of it all...

No spitting in the gym, however...  ;)
Fitness joint effusion in my left knee (doc says it's from overuse) what workouts can I do? Feb 15 2007

This happens to me, as well.

I always get it after running or bicycling... but I never have any issues after the elliptical.

The only suggestion I have ever received is to have the fluid removed. That sounds scary.

Do you have any pain with your inflammation? Mine is always painless- but I do definitely wonder about long-term damage.

Foods Pizza Hut Help!! Feb 08 2007

I'm not sure about in the States, but the Pizza Hut's here in canada have a section for healthier choices.

I know the small-sized spaghetti with marinara sauce is a filling option that isn't too bad. I love pasta... but it's hard to stay away from the damn pizza there. If I were to go to the buffet with the intention of just eating salad... I would leave hungry. (And pissed off!)

The spaghetti will at least fill you up- so you don't leave feeling ripped off.  ;)

Fitness Need help with strengthening arms Feb 06 2007
20:41 (UTC)
I dont know how it might affect your elbow, but I find rowing really helps strengthen your arms. (If you ever consider a piece of home equipment. They are not too expensive & take up the least amount fo room)

I use the full resistance setting, and you push with your feet, but I use mostly the "pulling' motion of your arms to make strides.

It's a great full-body workout.

Hkellick- If my comment "From post #36"

"Which to me is much better than "Why dont you search the forums?" or "find it yourself..."  And THATS the kind of response, along with other comments and attitudes that are too frequent, that make people not want to bother."

If this "Set you off" (?) I truly apologize. Perhaps it wasn't aimed towards you at all. In fact, I wasn't aiming at anyone, didn't even have anything to aim. I am weapon-free. I think the interesting part of this is that you took that personally. You seem to be the only one who was offended. Perhaps that's something you should question yourself about. I dunno...?

I think Roxanned summed up about everything I am thinking/feeling. If you don't want to answer someone, don't. If you don't want to read the post at all, dont bother.

But for the love of carbs... Do you have to tell someone to "go fish" or put down people who are just getting started???

As mentioned before, you asked me to go directly to you if I had an issue. I only ask that you take your own advice. In my humble opinion, your "high horse" comment was odd & uncalled for.

"What makes someone feel better than a link made 'specially for them??? "

Garnet I didn't mean that sarcastically at all... I must have been confused- I know there is someone in my friend's list that I have always thought "It's really nice of them to take the time to search out the info for the person and create a link directly to it." I thought it was you...

I know the user I am thinking of has all of Coach Dee's old posts tagged & creates links to them... and if I asked a question (silly or otherwise) and soemone took the time to search for the answer for me, I think that's wonderful...

Usually when someone creates a link for you, it's accompanied by, "hope this helps," or "I found this useful," Which to me is much better than "Why dont you search the forums?" or "find it yourself..."  And THATS the kind of response, along with other comments and attitudes that are too frequent, that make people not want to bother.

My problem isn't with linking to info (I suppose it could be taken less personal, but it answers the question.) It's with people belittling others for asking the question in the first place.

LMAO @ United- I was just as bad. The first time someone told me they "friended" me... I was like, "Ummm, thanks..."  (???)

It's easy for some of us to feel like pros at this now, because luckily when we started, things were nice enough for us to hang around and gain experience.

Christinavt- didn't know about the block feature. Some people might find that comes in handy... Dare I ask how to use it?? (Just kidding...)

Garnet-  The FAQ's are great. I think I've seen you hyperlink to the specific area that pertains to the users question, yes??? What makes someone feel better than a link made 'specially for them??? :)

I think this post is wonderful in a very unfortunate way... I think it's awful that this is a common conception of the site, overall. I think it's great in that it's a way to open everyone's eyes to that.

I've been avoiding the forums like the plague because, as phantompoe has mentioned, there are so many that frustrate me. Not because I'm seeing the same question being asked for the hundredth time- the beauty of this site is if you see the old familiar headline... you don't even have to read it if you don't want to, but because the people who choose to open, read, and respond to the posts sometimes do so inappropriately.

It also shows me my own fault... not going to the forums, not taking a few moments to answer a few questions here and there or give adive or encouragement because of this. It's kind of selfish. I've been on the site almost a year... and maybe if people feel like there aren't too many nice or accepting people on the site, or that it's clique-ish... perhaps it's because a lot of those people have learned it's easy to keep to yourself on the site.

It's not the way it should be. And I hope this post helps make it a little better! :)

Actually... I was tempted to post a little too late on your "Ruby Tuesday" chat, HKellick.

I found your remark about all of the people without the required "Gumption" to be "gone soon??" a little out of line.  And it just seemed to me that you were applauding that...

To be honest, my first thought was that the comments made were kind of hypocritical. We are all here to support each other and encourage each other... not to put down one another like some of us are more practised at this than others. Some of us are. So what? When we "veterans" joined, we were rookies too.

Also- perhaps I'm not one to comment on researching the answers to your questions... I was the one a year ago asking how to calculate my BMI and asking "How many calories should I be eating?" When the answers were right in front of me. I'm pretty computer illiterate... I might have looked beyond the obvious, but you know what??? People told me. They didn't direct me to another webpage, or tell me how to use the archives and the tools menu... they TOLD ME. And they wished me luck and applauded me and ENCOURAGED me!!!!!! Isn't that what we're here for???

No offense, but the seemingly "silly" questions seem a lot more in line with the purpose of the website than, say... a chat about religion?
Weight Loss IT'S IMPOSSIBLE--last 5 pounds and back on the wagon Jan 18 2007

I've been on the last five pounds for almost a year.

It's horrible. I've decided not to look so much at the scale, but to continue with my healthy (Um, most of the time) habits until I have the toned look I've been after.

Good luck!

I'll never forget it...

I had just finished college and moved to the East Coast to start advertising for a large newspaper...

September 11th was my first day.

We had a morning sales meeting at 8:30 and I had just survived the most embarrassing case of "Stand up and Introduce yourself to the crowd" Ever... Suddenly everyone started rushing around outside the glass office we were in... Being a newspaper they always had loads of TV sets set up around the top of the room... all different sizes on all different channels...

Each one had the same pictures on them- the world trade centre burning... watched the second plane hit and finally the towers collapse...

It was a pretty crazy place to be, that's for sure.

Shujo-

You might actually be surprised also by how many calories you were consuming before you started to actually count them. I know it sounds silly, but before I really started to learn more and pay attention to nutrition and my body... I used to think there were "no" calories in alcohol.

I thought juice was calorie free- fruit... Anything that I deemed to be "good for me" -I would eat or drink however much I wanted...

Had you asked me how many calories I had consumed that day- I would have probably tallied my sandwich, granola bar, etc... and come up with a ridiculously low number (Not even considering the WHOLE JUG of orange juice I drank throughout the day)

Once you start to pay attention it is natural to see what your body can do without. BUT! Your body is not meant to run on nothing. These girls who talk about starving themselves are in for a real treat- either they'll eventually have to start eating again... without ANY way to metabolise this food, so they'll store fat like hibernating grizzlies... or they will continue to not eat until- well... you know what happens then.

Holly the best way to figure out what your body needs is figure out your BMR - using your activity level figure out your "maintenace calories" (The tools section of the site will tell you.) You should never go below 20% of that.

Good luck to you- hope this helps!

It's often the fear of maintenance that creates problems.

I think that a distorted self-image is quite common in today's world... I know that I am guilty of it myself.

I hope that you find your way through this safely and healthily.

Actually stretching is one thing to be careful with. Any "bendy" moves can cause issues (I'm not sure what kind- this was the advice of an old trainer- he seemed uncomfortable- I didn't push it... LOL)

But walking, biking, or jogging is the best exercise during that time. And I suppose that depends on your comfort and (Ahem, sorry...) "Method of protection."

I've said it before and I'll say it again.
You need enough calories in your body to lose weight. It's metabolism. It's so very basic.

If you don't get enough calories- you will not lose weight permanently. Your body can not exist on a lowered calorie diet and it will adjust it's metabolism to suit its current needs. The problem with lowered calorie diets: Your metabolism drops to suit what you are feeding it. It adjusts itself to use each bit of energy you feed it to make your basic functions work. When you go back to a normal way of eating... or "maintenance" This is when a lot of people gain their weight back. The concept is simple- your body has been used to living on NOT ENOUGH. So now it's first job is to store all of those calories as excess fat so that you can survive the next "Starvation". Perhaps if we ate what we should be eating the transition into maintenance would be simple.

I think it's great that a lot of people here realize the typical 1200 calories a day (Or for some, unbelievably, less) isn't going to work.
I am a small framed 5"1 and my body needs 1755 calories a day to maintain my weight. To LOSE weight, the very least would be 1404. I know most people are not as short as I am (Gentic defect maybe? I'll blame my mom) ...therfore most need more than that.

I've rambled. I'm sorry... I just get quite tired of people (No one on this post, mind you) saying they can't figure out why it's such a struggle...  And they starve. Where did all the starving people come from, anyways???  LOL

I liek Tae-Bo.. the new Billy Blanks Tae-Bo videos are workign out great for me... there's a set of 6 or 8 I think.... Missions 1-6 maybe... there are seperate ones for lower body, upper body, cardio, etc... really moves and flows well, so it keeps you interested- i hate when videos stay too long on one thing... not only do you lose interest... but try holding me in a lunge for more than 2 minutes and I'll probably just turn it off... LOL

The Biggest Loser workout is great, too- still one of my favourites- I pair two workouts with the warmup and cool down though, beacuase the workouts are only 20-minutes... The video is like $12.00 at Walmart... and a great investment- I used it a ton when i first got it and now to break up the boredom.

Good Luck!
