I did like the TV show but I don't think the Sookie novels are a total rip off of the tv show.

You're right, the Sookie novels are way different than Buffy: hot blonde chick with super powers she doesn't want, living in a community where vampires live amongst the people, surrounded by a group of friends including a witty female best friend, a younger sibiling who's always getting in trouble, an older parential figure watching over her, and a nice, safe, male friend who's really in love with her but she won't give him the time of day because she's too distracted by the mysterious, hansome, non-evil vampire-with-a-soul who helps keep her safe and out of trouble...

I thought we were talking about the Sookie Novels and not the TV show Trueblood here. In the books Sookie doesn't have a best friend. Tara isn't even in the first book, she shows up at almost the very end of the second book and is a very minor character, she also isn't what I would call a witty character. She isn't even in some of the other books, she is just a minor character that Sookie sometimes talks to. Jason is also fairly minor has far as the books go, yes he is Sookie's brother, but the books can go a pretty long time without him in them.

I may be a little confused here but who is the older parental figure watching over her?

As someone else already said Bill is a pretty different character in the books, and I actually think Sookie is too. I hated the way she reacted to certain events in the TV show, I was constantly saying to my TV set Sookie would never say that.

To me the books are a ton better than the tv show is, they didn't do an awful job of it, the basic plot is the same, but they really did change some major things. I don't really think you can discuss things from the book if you have only seen the tv show.

The first time I ever really got into Vampires was when I read "Interview with a Vampire" by Anne Rice. I read her entire Vampire Chronicles back when I was in Jr High. She wrote the first one in 1976. They made a movie from the first book in 1994.

I did watch Buffy, the movie and the first few seasons of the TV show. The movie was in 1992, and I didn't actually like it very much. The show started in 1997 and I watched the first 2-3 seasons.

I did like the TV show but I don't think the Sookie novels are a total rip off of the tv show. There are a lot of differences. I think if anything the Anita Blake Vampire Hunter novels are closer to Buffy.

That is just my opinion though. I have been reading vampire novels for a long time since I am a big fan of the genre and many of them have similarities. It is pretty hard for any author today to come up with a truly original idea anymore.

There are currently 8 books out with a 9Th book scheduled to release in May of next year. She usually releases about 1 a year. I wish she wrote faster, I love her books. I have never read any books online, but it sure would save me a ton of money. I have been thinking of buying a Kindle for a while now, but I love cozying up with a book in bed or the tub, and it just doesn't seem like it would be the same.

If you really like to read and like the show then you may want to go ahead and buy the box set which has the first seven books in it:

http://www.amazon.com/Sookie-Stackhouse-Boxed -True-Blood/dp/0441017770/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1?ie= UTF8&s=books&qid=1229553765&sr=8- 1

If you aren't sure then just get the first book, but i love the series and think you will probably end up wanting to read them all.

I had to re-watch parts of the first and second episode to be sure of this. This is the HBO pilot that i saw:

http://secure.hbosurveys.com/surveys/tb1108.h tm

Sookie throws the chain and it goes around the guys neck really hard. Then a little later they show a close up of him and it looks like the chain is tightening around his neck on its own. Hes struggling with it and he can't get it off. When I first watched it I just figured she threw it so tight he couldn't get it off, but I now see it tighten around his neck.

I think they must have taken the lady in the bushes out but left what she did in. I think this was due to storyline spoilers involving the book. They didn't want to give stuff away, but for some reason they didn't edit out there part where the chain tightened. Maybe you are just supposed to wonder why, or maybe it was a mistake after the lady was edited out, not sure.

On the second episode it is Bill that helps Sookie. He is really fast when he attacks them so he looks like a blur, but I am almost positive it is Bill helping her at the start.

And is anyone else still wondering what happened with that lady in the bushes that helped Sookie in the first episode? And in the second episode? (assuming it's the same one)...I was kind of wondering if she's the same one helping Tara, but then again I also have that feeling like kathy that she's bad news...

I was really confused when I first read this. I was positive I never saw a woman in the bushes. Today i was reading a different forum where someone else brought this up. Apparently there is a unaired original pilot episode that was not aired on HBO, but is available online. The unaired pilot has a lady in the bushes helping Sookie and a few other minor changes that HBO took out when they changed the pilot. I am not positive but I think someone also said that Tara was played by a different actress in the unaired pilot.

Some people watched all the episodes online so they saw this woman in the bushes, while others like myself saw all the episodes on HBO and never saw a woman in the bushes, so this is where the confusion comes from.

It sucks i can't really respond to this thread at all. Since I have read all the books I already know the answers to all these questions, so they wouldn't be guesses. Grr! It is frustrating not being able to talk about the show, I actually liked it by the end of the season, though I didn't like it at first since I kept wanting to compare it to the book.

Health & Support Anyone have problems being intimate with your partner? Nov 01 2008

A couple of things.

1. I love hugging and cuddling with my husband and it brings us closer together and lots of times it doesn't lead to sex. You are cheating yourself and your husband out of a wonderful feeling of closeness by not being willing to hug him. Your husband sounds very patient and understanding so tell him you would like to hug and cuddle but not do anything else, just holding on to one another can help you with your intimacy issues.

2. If your only fear is him seeing you in the nude then there are lots of people who only feel comfortable having sex in the dark. You can start by making love in total darkness if you need to, maybe working your way up to low candle light.

3. I agree with the previous poster a bath and lingerie isn't likely to help, but try whatever you need to, if it works for you then it works. Its not about the mood its about how you feel about yourself, and about being comfortable with your body image. You are obviously working on that by trying to lose weight, but you may need more help from a doctor or someone else.

4. My husband and I went through a period of time similar to this. He didn't want to have sex with me too often, it made me feel awful. I felt like I was doing something wrong, that he had lost his attraction to me, or that maybe he was even interested in someone else. I knew he wasn't having an affair, but how could he not want to have sex, hes a man after all. He finally told me that since he had gained about 30 pounds he had lost some of his sex drive and he didn't feel very sexy. That he felt gross when he looked at himself naked.

I had gained weight too and I didn't look at him any differently, I still wanted to have sex and still found him sexy, but telling him that didn't mater. It seems like he was in a similar situation as you. It caused us a lot of problems and I really hope you can find a way to work through them. We are doing really well right now, but it took some time to work through.

Foods Halloween Candy Storage Question Oct 31 2008
22:02 (UTC)

Last year I had a ton of candy left over since we didn't have many kids show up. I just stored the left overs (all of it was chocolate) on the top shelf of my pantry, which stays shut anytime its not in use. From what I understand as long as it stays in a cool dark place out of direct sunlight it will be fine for a pretty long time. Mine was still good 6 months later which is when I think the extras ran out, I would say my house maybe got up to 74 degrees, with it being cooler than that in the pantry.

If you only want to keep it 6 months or so I have kept extra candy for that long multiple times now, maybe even a little longer with no problems just in a pantry or cabinet. If you want to do longer I don't know much about freezing it, maybe check out this site: http://candy.about.com/od/workingwithchocolat e/a/storechocolate.htm

Yes, the NIH Pubmed is where I searched for the articles. As I said there are no articles linking SPLENDA/SUCRALOSE to cancer ... this thread was not about aspartame/saccharin originally which was my argument to the OP. And I totally agree with you about the headache thing ... if it makes you feel unwell, don't use "it", whatever "it" is.

I apologize for misreading your post. I read it after reading the several things about aspartame and didn't realize it was going back to the original question of splenda causing cancer. I agree with you there are no studies or articles published anywhere that I can find that state anything linking splenda to cancer. After reading the entire thread at some point it got turned in to something else which I guess is where my confusion came from, you clearly stated sucralose, but my mind must have still been on the aspartame fix. My bad!

Maybe someone can post the references which published the results of these supposed studies into sucralose and cancer suggesting a link (I am not talking about internet website but the real publications). I looked myself in the scientific literature and see NOTHING but refutes.

A couple of medical libraries list articles with the publications listed. Most of the articles I found were discussing the link between aspartame and headaches/migraines. The only one I found regarding cancer was the infamous mice study.

A couple of places that list the Researchers involved as well as their references.

The EHP, or the Environmental Health Perspective has three pages on aspartame related articles. One is the rat cancer study which lists everyone involved http://www.ehponline.org/press/111605.html

The same site also has an article published saying there is not enough research to determine if splenda causes cancer, it also lists all of its references. It can be found at http://www.ehponline.org/docs/2006/9260/lette r.html

They have a search engine for finding more articles and studies.

Bandolier, an independent journal about evidence-based health care, written by Oxford scientists, posted their own study on the link between aspartame and headaches http://www.medicine.ox.ac.uk/bandolier/band13 5/b135-5.html

The National Institute of Health (The NIH) has a database you can search for published articles and studies. http://www.nih.gov/index.html

As for if these publications are true, well I guess anyone could post on a website a study and then list a bunch of references. I don't have the time to go looking up all the references to make sure they are valid, but it is somewhat better than just reading a website that shows no facts or information as to where they got their information.

I still believe there are too many possible ways to get cancer to worry about this one, but I believe the headache one is possible, but everyone is different, wine, cheese, and chocolate also cause some people bad headaches.

I have no real opinion on this subject but I do hear about various things all the time that may or may not cause cancer.

According to this site: http://www.canceriq.org/causes.html

Possible causes are microwaving your food, dying your hair, using a cell phone, wearing makeup, and others including the artificial sweeteners. It is almost impossible today to avoid everything that might cause cancer, but that really isn't the point of this topic, either you like them or you don't, but I don't think you should be too worried about the cancer unless you are excessively using them.

The Lounge Most Popular____. Oct 23 2008
19:31 (UTC)

I put my guesses awhile ago, these are the answers I found after looking them up. No clue if they are right or not, just what I found.

  • Most popular name: According to the Social Security dept: The most popular name given to babies last year was Jacob and Emily. When I looked for the most popular name in the world I found an article published in the UK last year stating that Muhammad (or some variation, there is 14 spellings) is the most popular name in the world. The article didn't say where they got this information, and I couldn't find any other articles other than those in the UK or citing the UK article, so I'm not sure if its true or not. I couldn't find anything on the most popular girl name worldwide.

  • Most popular drink: This one was a lot harder since it wasn't very specific. Worldwide the most popular drink is coffee, followed by tea. Since these both take water to make I guess you could say water is the most popular, but I doubt thats what they were looking for. In the US the most popular beer is Bud Light. The most popular soft drink in America based on sales in Coca Cola. The thing we buy the most of in the grocery store is carbonated beverages. But as for what the most popular drink is in the US I can't figure that one out, so my guess is that the answer was supposed to be coffee since that keeps coming up as the world wide answer.

  • Most popular New Year's resolution: This one was a lot harder than I expected. I kept finding websites that listed them in a different order so it was too hard to say for sure what the number 1 answer was. As far as worldwide versus America, it seemed to be more broken down by women versus men. Women most often chose weight/get in shape/stay fit etc. Men however tend to pick spend more time with the family/save more money/get a better job etc. So I am going to say weight is the winner but only by a little bit, not by nearly as much as I would have expected.

  • Most popular flavor: Most popular flavor of what? I just searched for most popular flavor and got a lot of hits for ice cream, the answer for that is Vanilla. Then when I scrolled down some I found an article entitled: All about Vanilla, the world's most popular flavor. Seems vanilla beans are used to flavor more stuff than anything else, so this must be the answer.

  • Most popular sport: World wide Football(we call it soccer). In America the NFL is the most popular sport to watch while Baseball is the most popular sport to play. Not sure which answer they were looking for, my guess is the soccer one since it is so popular world wide.

  • Most popular car: Most often bought, Toyota Camry, also the most often stolen.

  • Most popular board game: Monopoly, both in the US and world wide.

  • Most popular tourist destination: World wide its France, this is if you just look at which Country is visited most often. The most visited tourist attraction world wide is Time's Square. The most visited city is London. When it comes to Americans the number one tourist destination as far as a place to visit is Central Florida, which includes Orlando, Disney World, and a lot of other stuff. The number one attraction Americans visit each year is Disneyland in Anaheim, CA. My guess here is that the answer they were looking for was France since that is the most popular destination world wide.

  • Most popular food: In the world, its rice followed by corn. In the US well according to sales it is carbonated beverages(not really a food) , followed by dry cereal. Not sure what they were looking for I guess it would be Rice since it is the world wide answer and easiest to find.

  • Most popular fairytale: Not real easy to find this one. The most often searched for fairy tale on the Internet is Cinderella. The most popular fairytale according to book sales is first storybooks with multiple stories then followed by Little Red Riding Hood. The most popular Halloween costume is Snow White. In 2004 they gave a survey to 1,200 children and they picked Cinderella as their favorite followed by Sleeping Beauty. So I guess the answer is Cinderella, but I couldn't find an exact answer anywhere(I'm just basing that on the fact that it is the most often googled fairy tale, not really the best thing to base it on, but I can't find the answer).

I must say I am pretty proud of myself. I went this past weekend and bought my Halloween candy. I considered not buying any, but I didn't want to punish the neighborhood kids just because of my diet. I will say walking through the isle was incredibly hard, so much candy! I so badly wanted to buy what I usually buy which is snickers and resse's peanut butter cups, those are my 2 favorites. Then sometimes I add m&m's. I knew if I bought that stuff I would want it.

I skipped all the choclate and went straight to the sweettarts, nerds, and some other kind of weird grape candy. It is sitting in the other room and not tempting me one bit. This is the first year I have ever not bought the stuff I like. So hey small victories, right?

I lives in West Virginia and I'm not inbred (but that's probably because I'm from Ohio).

I think the dumb, inbred redneck stereotype is the only one that applies to West Virginia.  While I've seen my share of *ahem* Appalachian Foreheads, I've also met some perfectly intellegent multiple bloodline people.

I hope you know I was joking, afterall stereotypes was what the thread was about. I have visited WV and it is a really pretty state. Smile

***

There are no stereotypes of New Yorkers. :|

lol As someone who has lived in the south their entire live and has never visited NY other than to drive through it one time, I can say that NY may have more stereotypes than any other state I can think of. The only other two that may have more are CA and maybe TX. I admit that most of them are about NYC and not the entire state, but that is a stereotype right there.

Several people already listed them but I just found that funny, I think we see more movies and tv shows about "The big city", which leads to these stereotypes. You all live in tiny apartments that cost more than my house, that is invested with cockroaches right? And get mugged a couple of times a year. And you hate people from New Jersey.

Dove: This will show just how stupid I am, but where is Disney? What city is it in if it isn't Orlando?

Luzinwait: those were really funny. My family visited Boston when I was a kid. We had a pretty hard time understand some of the people, but we had a whole lot of fun. My dad thought a cop was giving him a ticket when he was just asking him to move his car! lol talk about a thick accent. Everyone we met thought our accent was pretty funny too, so it went both ways.

Weight Loss Why do so many people complain about... Oct 20 2008

I think everyone has pretty much said it all. I just want to say that I get really sick when I go a long time without eating. Migraines, dizziness, nausea, cramps. I get all that if it has been a couple of hours since I have eaten, and it gets bad fast. So bad that I can't eat, I am so nauseous that I get sick from eating, so I have to eat really slow until my stomach calms down. So its not a good idea for me to just deal with it.

I also try not to eat before bed time, but if I feel at all hungry I can't sleep so I usually drink a cup of milk right before bed.

We all have different bodies that deal with things differently, my husband can go all day without eating if he wants to, but that doesn't make it wrong that others of us can't handle that.

Who cares if you gain a little bit of weight?? Priorities, my dear!  Get your health in order. No one (including you) is going to care that you're thin if your body is all out of whack.

Focus on the task at hand - getting your medication doseage right. Weight does not matter that much, unless it is severely effecting your health.

My weight is damaging my heart. My cholesterol won't be normal until I lose my weight. So yeah I am pretty sure my heart is a good reason to freak out. Didn't any of you check how much I weigh? I can't afford to gain anything.

Oh and by the way, I haven't gained a single thing in the past week even since taking the lower dosage. I've actually lost half a pound. :)

Congrats on your weight loss, and keep up the good work! It feels even better knowing you were right and he was wrong!

My mom struggled with thyroid issues for many years before they finally had to remove part of it to help her get her levels to be "normal". That was about a year ago and even now they are still trying to adjust her medication. She hasn't changed her lifestyle at all, she eats what I consider to be a pretty good diet, yet she has gained almost 30 pounds since her surgery. It has been very hard for her and really discouraging, shes trying to lose weight but its been pretty hard. I think your doctor was trying to be honest with you. Maybe he is a real jerk and handled it the wrong way. You are in charge of your own body and what happens, but it helps to know what could happen so you are prepared to handle it. I hated my old doctor and I wish I had changed much earlier, my doctor now is much nicer. I think everyone should keep changing doctors till they find one they like and feel comfortable with.

i am really not getting this whole "negative calorie food" thing... a food can be low in calories but how would something be negative?

The concept is supposed to be that the food is so low in calories that you burn more calories by chewing it than you take in from the food itself, and also the calories it takes for your stomach to digest it. The reason people say celery is a negative calories is because it is so low in calories they believe the calories they spend to eat it thus balances it out and makes it negative. The food still has calories, but I guess they don't count them because of this.

I am not saying is this is true or not, just telling you why they call it that.

beckah, I am using a digital scale. I'm afraid it's pretty accurate though. Always gives the same number even if you step on it multiple times.

My digital scale does the same thing, it tells me the same weight 5 times in a row, but I also have a wii fit that I weight myself with everyday and it usually tells me about 3 pounds less than my scale does. The last couple of times I went to the doctor I weighed myself on my scale that morning and then was weighed there and they told me 2 pounds less than my scale, and this was several hrs later in the day wearing clothing.

So I weighed myself at my mom's house on her digital scale it was the same deal would tell me the same weight every time I got on but it wasn't the same as any of the other weights, same at my mother-in-law's house, except hers told me even higher than my own scale every time.

My husband weighs 50 pounds more than me and he experienced the same thing except for him its more like a 6-7 pound difference instead of 2-3 pounds. So I went to look online for the best bathroom scale out there and found a post from a man who went to the store and tried every single scale they had in the exact same spot with his shoes off. Not one of them told him the same weight, and some were off by as much as 10 pounds. Obviously its good to have a scale in your house, but I have no clue which scale is correct.

My theory from the video is it may be true from celery but not many other foods like fruit, but I am not a scientist.

I have been worried about Halloween too, so I have already made some rules for myself.

1. I can have "Treats" on the actual holiday, but not all month long. In the past I end up buying candy and what I don't pass out I eat for a few weeks. None of that, if I eat a few pieces on that day, ok then whatever its a holiday and I'm going to live a little, but the day before and after isn't a holiday.

2. I am going to buy candy to pass out that I don't like. I always buy my favorite stuff which is like either snickers or peanut butter cups. So no wonder I eat all the extras when its stuff I love. I may have a hard time buying stuff I don't like, but I am sure there must be some candy out there I don't love.

3. Anything extra we have my husband is going to take to work with him the next day and pass out. That way it isn't sitting in my house tempting me.

I hope these things help me to keep the holiday from becoming a nightmare.
