Weight Loss Medication, Weight loss, Growth stunt? Nov 02 2009

I know i said i'm a pharmacist, but i'll say it again. What you are describing is an allergic reaction, what she is describing is a normal side effect of the medication. They are completely different and side effects, oftentimes are dose limiting which means they go away the longer you take the drug, a simple idea from pharmacology 101. SO NO IT IS NOT RIDICULOUS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I was trying to help her and let her know this is normal, but these forums are full of people who speak to what they do not know. After 6 years and a doctor of pharmacy degree, i'm pretty sure i probably know a little more about drugs than you do. This is the reason why i left retail pharmacy and moved to research, because people think they know all the answers when you have a professional saying, no, you're wrong. So, you're wrong.. end of story I won't be replying to this thread any longer.

These drugs are clinically tested and approved by the FDA. She needs them for ADD, they may choose to lower the dose, an Alternative will most likely have the same side effects. We should not encourage non-compliance with medication. Once she is regulated on her medication, the side effects will subside.

I'm a pharmacist. It doesn't stunt your growth. That's probably coming from the mentality that coffee stunts your growth. Lack of appetite on ADD meds is very common, and is the reason why many turn to these drugs illegally to lose weight. Common prescription weight loss agents have the same effects, which are why they work. Add meds are stimulants, and for people with ADD, it helps make them more focused, for people that do not have ADD they are just very speedy and may lead to decreased cognition.

I'm a pharmacist so i'm always looking for medical results lol so when my pitty starts this, i get him groomed and ask them to pay special attention to his ears, then we got a drop that's similar to Tri-otic for humans, but in a week it's all gone.

YAY! I'm so proud of you girls! Miralax is a great alternative, it's not a harsh stimulant and it's not habit forming (like some are- you're right!). AND better yet, it's FDA regulated so you KNOW what you're getting, opposed to supplements! Kudos for asking the pharmy, colace in combination with the miralax should work out great. My work here is done. :) happy pooping!!! ;)

Not sure if there's a nutritionist around, but when i was in pharmacy school we did a rotation in nutrition... what we were taught (this was about 4 years ago now) is that if you want to weigh for example 120 and you're 5'4, you should be eating the BBE (basal body expenditure- about 1250) for that height and weight. Taking this into consideration, the CC count was dead on for me and my goal if i do absolutely nothing all day but lay in bed.

i'm at work and BURST OUT LAUGHING when the girl said she had to grab the sink to sit on the toilet... lol lol I DID TOO!!!!!!!!!!!!! lol lol.  Now, when i go to the gym, i get REALLY mad because no matter what i do i do not get sore, unless i lift unhealthy weight. THIS, day 1, killed me. It was non-stop, and intense, i really couldn't walk for two days, new years eve my sister in law was cracking up at me because i couldn't get on the floor to play with my niece lol.  I'm a pretty normal weight, 155 right now (although of course, i'm here so i want to be less) so don't get discouraged if you can't move the day after lol.

yep. That way your body will actually already be absorbing the medication. When you take it together, you flush it just like everything else :( Meds are too expensive and too important to waste! lol

I get it, but in my field, i see a lot of messes because of reccommendations.. which i don't even mind .. lol but when someone says "come on it's just husks" or it's just fiber (it is, but it's more than that).. it's literally my oath to step up. You are right, they can work for people, it's a great reccomendation, but not for people on meds if they don't know when to take them in combination with their medication (2-3 hours separation).  I'm glad you found something that will work for you, and HONESTLY it's something i can keep in mind to reccommend now if one of my patients in the community setting fits the mold. So thanks for your insight as well.

not the enema, the husks.

Listen, Luv, it CAN mess with the absorption of medications since it messes with the GI tract. It's REALLY important you separate it from medications by 2-3 hours. People don't realize the effects food and ESPECIALLY SUPPLEMENTS has on medication! I'm a doctor of pharmacy, trust me, it's my job to know if this is going to mess with medication.

The aciphex has cause constipation in clinical trials, you may want to talk to your doctor, but if you need it, it may be a risk/benefit sort of thing. Since all antacids MAY have this effect, there's not too many other choices beside OTC, which probably won't help you.

Agruskin- you need to talk to your doctor before you start on that. If you're on other medications can can harm the absorbption. Speaking of which, some medications can leave you constipated, including Antacids! I've found yogurt, increased fiber, and LOTS of fluids help too. If i start getting the pains where i know it's going to be a rough couple days i take a tool softener.

I have IBS and i'm a Dr. of pharmacy. Go to your MD, but if your stool is very hard or you are straining, this may be the reson for the blood. Is it a lot and bright red or mild and trace?  In my experience it was the later and the MD said it was normal b/c of the IBS, but it can be a sign of anemia as well.

Weight Loss HELP! I feel like I am starving to death! Dec 31 2008
14:33 (UTC)

Well, honestly, Doctors aren't there to guide you through a diet. If you need help i would go to a nutitionist or even a physical or occupational therapist. You're right, doctors do not get a ton of training in nutrition unless they specialize.. but then again... they don't get a lot of education on ANY topic unless they specialize, which is why you don't want to go to a DO for surgery or why you should ask a PHARMACIST if your medication is right.... Anyhow, off my soapbox, but I would not go to a 1000 calorie diet.. you'll get over the hump.

Igottapi4, you need to speak with your doctor, i'm not sure your medications are correct for you. I'm a doctor of pharmacy and it sounds like something's a miss with your meds. You can contact me directly if you'd like.  Other than that, keep working on it, and you'll get there. I had to stop weighing myself everyday, because you can drink a glass of water and put back on that .4lbs, so i do it once a week. You'll get there. Ok i need to walk my pup now. ;)

Weight Loss Weapon against starvation mode? Oct 23 2008

well, i'm surely in need of advice here too i guess. i too spent about a year on and off in starvation mode, and now it actually seems that's the only time i'm losing weight, and i've been keeping a journal, there's not a day where i went anywhere near 1800 calories, usually 13-1500 and i'm not losing any sort of weight. I'm about to take a visit to the doctor for thyroid levels, because honestly, i've never eaten this well in my entire life, and at about 150 now i'm not pleased, and want my size 8 back- and those were the days of bigmacs and shakes lol!

hahahah well, basically, i guess i feel like... as long as i exercise, i'm sweating, my heartrate's up, i'm that good sore, i'm sleeping better, eating better, i feel pretty good, so i can't be doin bad. I'm not a body builder, nor do i ever want to participate in a 5k, and the weight that i DO have to loose (or want to) is coming off, i'm doing SOMETHING right. Kudos for all your hardwork the both of you, i bet it feels wonderful to have those goals! Mine are a but more cosmetic... :) and the convo seemed like a good way out of cardio! :) i'll stick to my routine, but may try the weights first, i'll see how that feels, but i'm pretty set in my workout ways because when i commit and really go to the gym 3-4 times a week (instead of the once a month it had fallen to) i see results.. FAST. Melkor- i'm still not going over with the big guns lol i know how to use the weights, i'm just not dealing with the national confederation of grunters lol!

since i'm bored at work lol i looked it up for you, based on what you typed, and i don't know what was fat free or how much, ect, it's about 450 calories... that was for 1 cup chicken, 1/4 cup cheese, the low carb wraps, 1/4 cup peppers, then everything else is like.. 0 calories.. i used the recipie builder. if lunch is your biggest meal- i guess that's cool right?

Foods do you think this is a good lunch?? Oct 03 2008

why don't you type that into the recipie builder. things are either way better than i thought or way worse.. for example.. my brocolli mac, is actually worse in calories than the peppers, potato and egg sandwhichs i make. I use that recipie thing all the time since i refuse to make two dinners for me and my husband, and i know that i can just portion myself differently.  He's a VERY active contractor, and he wouldn't eat healthfood if i cramed it down his throat! and it helps me find alternatives, like red peppers are higher in nutrition than green, which i typically use. PLUS i like knowing i can eat something i really want to if i work my calories right, or take a reasonable portion.

But for the lunch, i would say, in my lunch world that would be too much. i usually eat a half a sandwhich with one piece of meat and 1 piece of cheese or a meal replacement bar. then yougurt and apples and tea through the day.. but that's because my dinners are higher in calories.  I would think the chicken strips being packaged would be very high in sodium, but i think one might be better.

Foods what food/drink will you not give up for 'diet' or a more healthy version? Oct 03 2008

i'm standing strong here and i'm not giving up anything. i'm not going to eat AS MUCH of it, and i'm not going to have a brownie and a bowl of pasta in the same day, and i'm not eating those things everyday- but i'm not doing it. In 10 years since i was 15, i've starved myself, barfed, binged, no carbed it, phenphened it, all carbed it, you name it, i'm done with it. I'm making better choices, and i'm not giving up wine and cheese binges unless someone cuts out my palate, :) but everything in moderation. I measure, and cook alot so i've gotten better at "eyeballing" at restaurants, my servings are way more appropriate, and i stay within my calories during the day, and i'm steadily loosing weight- plus being (a little) bad feels pretty good! :)

Fitness Advice Please: Personal Trainers at the Gym Oct 03 2008

i go to bally's and i've been HARRASSED by this one trainer for about 2 weeks- so much so i somedays avoid the gym and do the WII or go for a bikeride so i don't have to deal with her! She asked if i'd like a free session- i'm not one for these trainers- no offense- but if i were going to go to one, i'd choose one that is well reccommended, and may i say, FIT themselves. So i accepted the free session, but in hindsight said, forget it, and stayed at work late that day instead. She CONTINUALLY finds me at the gym and talks to me for the entire cardio portion, annoying me, i like to do my sudoku on the bike lol! Yesterday i walk in, and i'm talking to a family member that's walking out, and she's in my face! I barely said anything to her and she then was like, "what's wrong, what's wrong, are you ok, are you ok, what happened!" i was like.. SERIOUSLY? ...........sorry rant. Yell

holy crap! i had no idea i should weight train first! i've been doing cardio first for TEN YEARS or more! lol Also- why is cardio optional? Honestly- don't tell me, then i won't do it. I do find better results with the free weights, and i hurt more the next day in a good way, but my current gym is very secular- i'm not going over to the big guy side to grab my 10lbs weights, when they're throwing weights around like they're the NFL or something. Not to discredit the machines wholly- i do get some muscles i wouldn't otherwise know exactly how to target.

Anyone have a good ab workout? i've got a muffin top i've NEVER had in my life... not even when i've weighed the same- i'm not digging this almost 30 thing!

yeah i DOUBT it's healthy.. but then again, that's how i lived my life for 6 years of college, i was thin then, but 3 years later when the 2000 happened more and more.. lol 15lbs more than i was then...my calorie goal is only 1200 a day so i hardly find myself going too far below, but i think you definately should try to keep a bit more steady

i have the same problem. i usually beat up my scale... lol i'm not even kidding. if it's digital, you need to try to reset it. i pick mine up and flip it over. then i put it back down and it lets me re calibrate it. USUALLY this works. but i'm ready to go back to the old fashioned scale, i'm tired of wondering if it's broken or not! The first time after you step on it after the flip it's going to register HIGH, then step off, a C will display and step back on... hopefully that works. if not- new scale.

Recipes Opinions Needed on Wine! Oct 01 2008

with the sweetness of the potato i would offset with a drier wine. a dry reisling if your guests still like it on the sweet side or a good pino grigo. I would keep it white with chicken, chill it, the flavor will be better. Try to find something local in the wine store, they usually have less bottle shock. (no offense- i HATE the barefoot brand lol, i know A LOT of people who do like it, but it's always way too bitter for my tastes- if you go this route- keep it on ice.)

I just realized this was like.. last week. lol but there's some idear's for you next time! :) lol and a good rule is if it's white meat/sause serve white wine, and if it's red, red. Merlot and Pino are ALWAYS in my cabinet as go-tos then i buy yummy stuff for a fun sunday wine and cheese spread for me and hubby.
