Yeah the bar is already starting to bend in the middle with the maxweight of 130 lbs, and it is almost at max capacity for the weights. I think the latter wouldn't be an issue if we only had the typical weight plates. But when we purchased a workout bench via craigslist, it came with some of those plastic weights that you fill with I guess..concrete ? I'm not sure how to describe it ,sorry. But we have about 60 lbs of those, and then about 60-80lbs worth of the usual weight plates. Sorry if this is confusing ! |

What would be a sustainable bar? Like Olympic style? And one-legged squats like Bulgarian Splits? And what about front squats? Sorry for all the questions, and thanks again! |

Thanks so much! I'll look into the ABA/BAB split and try that starting next week. I'll try to look into other variations of squats/deadlifts/etc. Do you know of any other websites that provide different exercises? Currently I've just been going to exrx.net to look at various exercises. Thanks again! |

Thanks for the feedback! I was thinking about first checking the New Rules for Lifting before actually buying it for myself, but maybe I'll just buy it now! I'll look into it. Thanks again! |

Thanks for the advice! I guess I just won't do any cardio for a week and see how it goes. You think I can at least weight lift still? =( |

| Fitness | how much time do you spend doing cardio? | Feb 16 2009 14:40 (UTC) |

I do 3 days of HIIT for 25 minutes (including 3 minute warm-up and 5 minute cool down). I also do 20 minutes on the bike at various intervals/intensities on 2 of the 3 days I lift weights (I don't bike on my legs day). I feel like I'm such a minority compared everyone's long cardio hours... But I'm always about to cry after each HIIT/weight lifting session from pushing myself as hard as I can, so it works for me. =D |

You don't have to workout... You could just try to be more active overall, such as walking more, taking the stairs, parking farther from buildings at school, etc etc. Also, maybe you can try to work out in the morning if you are deadset on working out? I didn't think I could wake up early (6:30AM or 7AM depending on the day) to work out... but eventually it became a habit. One of the things I realized was that if I worked out later in the day, I'm more likely to make up excuses to not work out. But if I wake up early, I'm still in a dreamlike state and thus, unable to make up excuses...When I first started working out in the mornings, I had class early, too. Althoug I'm out of school now, I still wake up early to work out because it's become second nature to me. Sometimes I forget later on in the day whether or not I worked out because it's become such a habit, and then I remember why I'm so sore... You really don't need to be in the gym or wherever you work out for long periods of time. Like Kajikit said, it's possible to fit in 20-30 minutes in a day. During my HIIT days, I'm only in the gym for 30 minutes, with 25 minutes of actual exercising. And I also agree with amethystgirl that you can take advantage of the school gym. Honestly, I don't think anyone would judge you if you go... or even really care because they're probably too focused on their own work outs. And on the weekends, 20-30 minutes set aside to work out wouldn't be bad, either. I'm sure your friends would forgive you. And 20-30 minutes to work out may be a nice break if you are doing homework all day or something. Good luck! |

I have taken CLA since I started losing weight... I think it was mainly to speed up metabolism and help build muscle or something. My boyfriend suggested we take it while we were losing weight. Never had any known side effects from it. Did it help me lose weight? Hell if I know, honestly... If it made a difference.. it may have been like .00000000001%. I don't know how exactly I could quantify it. I don't even know why I'm still taking it... However, I attribute my weight loss 100% to my change in diet and weight lifting/some cardio.
EDIT: I guess you should just determine for yourself if it's worth it. |

| Vegetarian | Vegetarians, do you eat fish or geletin?? | Jan 18 2009 19:28 (UTC) |
14 |
I'm vegetarian and I don't eat fish. And for the most part, I try to stay away from gelatin. Right now, I take some multivitamins (One a Day Women) which has gelatin...but I got it from Costco long before I became vegetarian... and why waste a big bottle of multivitamin? but after I'm done with this bottle, I'm going to look for other multivitamins without gelatin in it. I think it's best to keep in mind that whether or not you adhere to a vegetarian or vegan diet, what you are trying to do is eschew whatever animal products you want to avoid -as best as you can, to your own abilities-. Crap happens, and sometimes you later find out that something you had ate/drank contained some fish... or some gelatin... or some dairy (may not be the case for you)... but sometimes it just can't be helped, because you honestly didn't know. Don't let those minute mistakes get you down, regardless of if other 'hardcore' vegetarians/vegans say otherwise. But good job on making a personal choice to become vegetarian. Good for you! I hope you'll enjoy it. =] |

Like another poster has said, you still have lost some weight! So good job! =D I'm also 5'2" and at my goal weight range of 122-125 (right now I've been weighing in consistently at 124, but as long as I'm within that range, I'm not going to freak out). I started at 150-ish lbs. I lost the last 5-10 lbs eating about 1400-1900 a day, zig zagging. I do work out 5 days a week, MWF walk/sprint + weightlifting and TuThurs(Sat) I do boring cardio (for me... wish I could walk/sprint and weight lift EVERYDAY). I weigh myself everyday I work out just to keep track and then average out the weight on the last day. You really shouldn't fret about minor fluctuations though, even if you are weighing yourself once or twice a week. Sometimes I would weigh about 1-2 lbs more than I did the day before, but also, for instance, I lifted heavy weights and was extremely sore or ate a lot of stuff with too much sodium the day before. So don't worry and be patient! Like said before, you've still lost a couple lbs already! That's awesome. =] |

| Weight Loss | what do you think about when your on the treadmill? | Jan 15 2009 13:46 (UTC) |

When I'm on the treadmill, I do interval training... so I'm always thinking about when I need to speed up or slow down. When I'm on the elliptical, I just think about when it'll be over with...because doing steady cardio is boring to me. =( In general, I workout with my boyfriend. He always watches ESPN in the morning so I just listen to it in the background. |

| Weight Loss | Skinny B**** Book | Dec 30 2008 19:23 (UTC) |

I have never read the book, and have no urge to really pick it up either... And I'm vegetarian! Hah. I think if it was a book that just laid out some facts about the health benefits from eating a vegetarian/vegan diet without trying to shove it down the reader's throat a la PeTA, for instance, then I'm sure it would be a better read. Also, I have heard people who have said this book has "changed their lives" and really made them think about what they ate. That's great, and some people may be more open to such a "forceful" writing style. Onto the casein to casomorphine thing, it is correct. That doesn't necessarily mean casein (a milk protein) makes one addicted to milk. It's just how our bodies process the casein...when casein is broken down in the body, it becomes a casomorphine, which is an opioide of sorts. And apparently cheese has the highest concentration (or something like that...) of casein... so it may have some chemical explanation as to why it can be so hard for some vegetarians to become vegan because they can't give up cheese! I wanted to try and find more relevant literature on it via google scholars, but most of the articles were published in the 70s-early 90s, and some may thus deem it old and irrelevant or something. However, I could probably find more recent literature through my school library's online journal articles site, but then no one will probably be able to access them but me. |

I eat some form of nut butter everyday... mainly peanut butter or Peanut Butter & Co's chocolate peanut butter. I eat 1-2 tablespoons of nut butter a day...but it's mainly because I'm addicted to peanut butter and can't go a day without it. I wonder if that's healthy? I eat nuts most days than not, too... 1/8-1/4 cup at a time. mainly I eat it for it's nutritional value and/or when I need to up my calorie intake by a good amount but not too hungry to have something big. |

Yeah. I thought this was pretty sad... especially when they had to close the Walmart for the day and some customers were -outraged- because they have been waiting all night! I mean seriously, have some compassion for some employee just trying to do their job who fell victim to the mob... It's unfathomable to me that the need to buy cheap stuff is so strong that some people are enraged when a store has to be closed due to an incident like this... I didn't even want to go out today, but I had to buy some lined paper and folder for school. ;\ |

| Vegetarian | Going Vegan...what shoudl I do? | Nov 27 2008 05:17 (UTC) |

Hi and welcome :D Let me see if I can answer a few of your questions: 1) NO. You will not be less of a vegan if you chose to became one for health reasons. Many people turn to veganism for different reasons, whether it's health or ethical reasons... who cares?! It's an awesome choice either way. :P 2) To be a vegan, you really need to understand nutrition! This is to say what vitamins vegans cannot easily obtain through their diets (i.e. B12 and iron, mainly), and that are still imperative to their health. So! maybe take a multivitamin suppliment everyday or something... And also, there is really nothing wrong with being vegan. What i mean is people tend to view vegans as always malnourished and frail, but that really isn't the case. You can definitely eat well. You can even be a vegan body builder! (www.robertcheeke.com) Vegan treats are just as delicious..... and can be fattening too. ;\ 3) The journey to veganism can be either a short process or a long journey. I think this site is very nice for really getting to know veganism. www.veganbits.com The two authors of this blog initially turned to veganism (they have been omnivores most of their lives) for health reasons, but now they are promoters of veganism for both health and ethical reasons. I think this is a good post for you to start on: tips to transitioning to veganism 4) Nowadays, most grocery stores carry some vegetarian/vegan options, which is great! And there are some common products that are already vegan. See: I can't Believe It's Vegan! And you can get your normal veggies/fresh produce at any grocery store... usually Whole foods is a rip off! but they tend to carry a wider variety of fresh produce that I can't usually get elsewhere... so I have to buy it there. but Whole Foods and Trader Joe's are awesome places because tehy have a ton of vegan things, too. I do like whole foods because their vegan section is bigger than regular food stores! But, price of groceries are as cheap or as expensive as you make them to be. Regardless where you go, just shop smart! If you have any other questions, you can message me or something some time. GOod luck! |

| Vegetarian | What finally made you become a vegetarian? | Nov 26 2008 21:32 (UTC) |

I have always been back and forth with vegetarianism since I was in middle school. I always knew in the back of my head that it's sad to eat animals, but the first time I stopped a vegetarian diet was because my parents said I needed to eat meat to grow... and I wasn't very well versed in the nutritional info at age 12. One of my sisters became vegan during this time, so I was just sort of following in her steps. She would show all the behind the scenes abuse videos, and it got to me... but not enough I guess? This FINAL time I decided to become vegetarian again was actually because of my boyfriend. Exactly a year ago, no the way home from a Thanksgiving meal with my boyfriend's family, he suggested we go vegetarian for 1 month. I said why not, because I can easily give up meat, but I wasn't sure how long my boyfriend would last since he has always ate meat. But, 1 year later, it's going fine. :D So although that didn't really put me over the edge, what really made me know for sure I could NEVER EVER eat meat again was just researching more into the humane aspect, environmental aspect, and health aspects of eschewing animal products. I cry when I watch those videos... You should watch Earthlings! It's pretty good..but I cried during the whole thing. And you may not be ready to give up dairy/eggs, and you may never have to! But you may find eventually that you can. If nothing else, you could at least try to get the dairy and eggs from a local farm where you know for sure they don't harm the cows/chickens. Even if you only eat once or twice a week, that's better than nothing... though some vegetarians/vegans may disagree. I think every bit helps though! |

I'm not sure if the Southern Tsunami Bar is an actual place, someone can correct me on that. :D I do know that my local grocery store's (Kroger) sushi bar puts out a lot of sushi varities... and that the sticker on the boxes say the are "Southern Tsunami". So it may just be that it's the most common sushi bar company in grocery stores??? I'm not sure. I think sesame oil has a very different taste from olive oil. It is very nutty... and so good. I think it may have slightly more calories (like... 10 more?) per tablespoon, but it's a very strong tasting oil, so too much may overdo it anyway. |

I love Japanese food! It's a shame I'm vegetarian now and can't have most of it. But it doesn't bother me so much, or tempt me so much to cave in and eat my favorite salmon sashimi or anything like that. And sorry, I can't help with identifying what you're talking about. =( In regards to mochi, it's sticky rice, yeah...but it's smoothed out so much it's not really textured as rice. It's really good, honestly. You would be amazed~ Nothing is bad for you though! Japanese food can be "good" for you. And really, tempura and katsu (tonkatsu, which is deep fried pork, chicken katsu, which is deep fried chicken) aren't that bad either... once in awhile. A lot of Japanese food relies on the quality and freshness of the ingredients (like sashimi!) Japanese bentos are also nice, too. They are like lunch boxes. Usually a bowl of rice, some type of meat, and tons of side dishes! It may sound like a lot, but they are usually decently portioned. And about Chinese food.... it's really not THAT bad if you're talking about real Chinese food! Americanized Chinese food can be pretty bad though... I'm Chinese, and when my mom cooks Chinese food, it's definitely not General Tso or Crab Rangoon (or whatever it's called). But sometimes Westernized Chinese food just hits the spot. =] Never be afraid to try new foods! It may be scary, since familiarity is so nice to have... but you may never know if you never tried! YOu may even fall in love with it. And what's the worst that could happen if you don't like something? You'll just not finish something you'll like, maybe regret that you still have to pay for it, and know that you'll never order it again. |

I'd have to agree with pgeorgian that the DSM is ever-changing and is really not the end-all be-all...after all, homosexuality was once in the DSM! So to just take the DSM as fact is kind of irresponsible in a way...because it focuses on the Western cultural viewpoint on things, and does not really take into consideration other cultural viewpoints that can be critical for someone. I think there is too much emphasis on viewing anything as a mental illness that needs to be treated. This view can be extremely damaging in its own right. BUT I think this could be effective for some people, in that every one is different and what works for some may not work for others. I can't wait to go home to watch the youtube cilp...I'm at school right now. =( But I read the blurb in the second link and it really seems interesting and promising in ways. It's a bit disappointing that the psychiatric field isn't delving into it, although not surprising to say the least! |

| Vegetarian | Vegan mashed potatoes | Nov 20 2008 23:47 (UTC) |

There are a lot of vegan replacements nowadays. As previously mentioned, soymilk, almond milk, rice milk... hemp milk...other milk works. Margarine works too! I love Earth Balance! No hydrogenated oils, too! Also, they even have soy creamer and I think even rice creamer now?? In case you use cream in mashed potatoes. There really isn't much difference in ingredients between "regular" mashed potatoes and "vegan" mashed potatoes, just subsitute with a non-dairy version. And I must say, people don't know any different when I make mashed potatoes for others. :D |
