Aberystwyth (the Welsh town I'm currently studying in) would be great for walking around if it wasn't constantly raining.  It's really hilly here.  People call the uni Mt. Top University.  Unfortunately, I find myself taking the bus most days because I know I'll end up completely soaked in the 20 minutes it takes to walk from my flat to campus.  I can't even use an umbrella because the wind is so strong.

I've never had cranberry sauce.  My family never serves it at Thanksgiving, and I don't think I've been around it otherwise.

Have you guys seen Pieces of April?  It's a really good movie about a girl making Thanksgiving dinner for her estranged family.  Even though it stars Katie Holmes, I highly recommend it.  There's a very cute scene of her preparing cranberry sauce.

This is kinda a unisex present that I got last year from a friend of mom's who doesn't know me very well, but felt compelled to get me something.  I love it!  The magazine has some talented, funny writers and they cover really cool stuff, a lot of which make for interesting conversation starters.  It's an endless supply of fascinating trivia, so if either of your guys are dorks, they'll adore it.

I was 19.  Actually, it just happened Saturday night.  It was a french kiss, which I was not expecting and didn't really enjoy.  It was kinda like kissing a cow.  I'm not sure if it was because it was a bad kiss, or if I'm just not used to it...

My grandpa used to say things like "she's a chubby one, isn't she?" to my parents in front of me.  Then, when I'd be hiding in one of the bedrooms during these super fun family get-togethers, he would come in, say nothing, and hand me a king sized chocolate bar.

Health & Support Bad Diet Dreams Nov 08 2009
22:37 (UTC)

I've had dreams about going on massive binges, eating everything in my kitchen, and then crying about it...not that far from the truth.

I think dreams are supposed to be just our minds' way of replaying our daily actions and sorting through what happened, or something like that.  People dream about all kinds of things that are related to their daily lives and it doesn't really mean anything other than synapses firing off in your sleep and triggering incomplete memories that the brain fills in with not so realistic stuff.  I've also heard that dreams improve our ability to learn.  I can recall reading a study where people were asked to perform some kind of brain teaser type task and then go to sleep long enough to go through REM before coming back to try the task again.  The subject's ability to perform the task dramatically improved after they had been dreaming.  This really doesn't have that much to do with your actual question, but I just thought it was interesting.  Maybe dreaming about eating healthier is making you more mentally equipped to handle it.

  1. What are you doing to celebrate All Hallows Eve?  I'm going to a party at my uni.  It's supposed to be Rocky Horror Picture Show themed, but I think it's more dress however the hell you want.
  2. What's your favorite "treat?"  Caramel sauce, on a spoon.
  3. What's the best Halloween costume you ever wore?  I was a cowboy-princess when I was 6 because I couldn't decide between the two.  I wore a red cowboy hat and boots with Belle's (Beauty and Beast) dress.  It was epic.
  4. You are going to a swanky Halloween Masquerade Ball.  The sky is the limit and your costume is paid-for.  What is it?  Alice in Wonderland.  I know it probably wouldn't be that expensive, but I just know I could totally rock that look.
  5. Did you carve a pumpkin and place it at your door to protect your home from evil spirits?  I would do, if I had one, and a knife.
  6. Do you believe in life after death?  I believe in life after love.
  7. If so, do you believe people can get 'stuck' in-between the land of the living and the land of the dead?  I do on Halloween.
  8. Had you ever considered that 31 is 13 backwards?  Yeah, kinda like I've considered that God is dog backwards.
  9. Now that you have what do you think about it being a Friday on Halloween? (Friday the 13th on Halloween)  It's saturday.
  10. Do scary movies give you nightmares?  Yes, I can't watch them at all.
  11. What's the scariest movie you have ever seen?  28 Days Later, and I only watched the first 10 minutes.
  12. How would you describe a witch?  Hermione Granger.
  13. Do you know what the Spanish Inquisition was?  Yes.
  14. If you could pick a Super-Human power, what would it be?  To freeze time.
  15. Have you ever perceived a ghost?  If so, how?  Describe it, the situation.  I haven't, but my parents both swear they have.  They said they used to live in this old house (go figure) owned by an old woman who would always watch tv with her dogs.  Anyway she died, and my parents rented the house and they said every once in a while they would hear the tv come on at night.  They would go downstairs and their dog, Bugler, would be sitting on the couch, watching the tv.
  16. Are you afraid of the dark?  Were you as a kid?  I'm not really anymore, but when I was a kid I was a major chicken.  I had to have the tv on to fall asleep.  It started when my dad did shadow puppets for me when I was 3.  Apparently it terrified me and I've been scared of the dark ever since.
  17. Do you believe that we reincarnate?  I think so.
  18. What's your ideal end-of-life scenerio like?  IOW, if you could pick how you were going to die and when, what would that be like?  It's lame, but I just want to die old and in bed, preferably with my husband next to me if he's not already gone.  I don't want everyone in my family surrounding me, crying or anything, just not to be alone would be good.
  19. What would you most like to happen to you after you die?  I'd prefer reincarnation.  Another go would be fun.
  20. What do you think will actually happen to you after you die?  Probably reincarnation as something really undesirable, like a slug.  I'm too vain, and that would be my karma coming to get me.

I'm only suggesting this because I just happened to be thinking about it today and I would totally wear it:

If you have a boyfriend or a really close male friend, you guys could go as Lady and the Tramp by both wearing the respective dog ears.  Then you could wear a pretty formal dress (I was thinking old prom dress) and he could dress like a hobo.  It just sounded cute to me, plus as long you already have a dress, the only thing you'd have to spring for would be some dog ears.  Not sure how hard it would be to find them, though...

I feel as though I could have written that post, and have honestly been considering it lately.  As someone who feels your pain all too well, I can't really offer anything but a healthy dose of empathy.

I go back and forth between thinking that I must be the biggest cowardly loner for not socializing with everyone else at the pubs and clubs, and thinking that I'm just different from those people.  It's not easy to know for sure, especially when my friends from high school assure me it's the former and my parents assure me it's the latter.  I worry my parents only say that because I'm safer if I'm hiding in my dorm, reading a book.  I know I need to decide it for myself but it's really hard.  I've been out a couple times and had some fun, but mostly I just feel awkward and shy.  I've never had a boyfriend, either, because I find it so hard to talk to people.  I feel like I don't know the protocol for social interaction.  I'm sorry if my reply only bums you out, but I just wanted to let you know you're not alone in your angst.

Freaks.  It's unsettling and laughable at the same time, which is a good thing for me because I'm very easily scared by horror films.

The one that scares me the most that I've seen is probably 28 Days Later.  I only made it through the first 20 minutes before I bade my friends goodnight.

Has anyone seen The Antichrist, van Trier's new movie?  It's so disgusting.  I went to see it only knowing that van Trier (one of my favorite directors) made it, so I wasn't expecting a feel good movie by any means but I definitely didn't anticipate a gore-fest.  Apparently he wrote it when he was suffering from a really severe case of depression.  I think it shows.  The is a film made by someone who was both wrestling with some pretty terrifying inner demons and lacking the hope to win that match.

OP:  Elves Rule!

Edit to add:  Invasion of the Body Snatchers-That one's fun to debate the meaning of.

I'm reading Sarah Vowell's Assassination Vacation, in which the author embarks on a pilgrimage to various sites that pay homage to presidential assassinations. Being a huge fan of David Sedaris and Sloane Crosley, Vowell's work was recommended to me by Amazon.

I guess I'm enjoying it, so far. I wish it was as reflective as the books written by the former authors. To me, it seems as though Vowell just regurgitates a lot of historical tidbits, and follows them with a whimsical little remark of her own, but nothing particularly thought-provoking. She doesn't seem to engage as much with her material as Sedaris and Crosley do. I actually liked the preface a lot more than I like the book itself. But I am only 60 pages in, so I'm hoping that it picks up. My dad's quite interested in American history, so I might buy it for him for Christmas (I got him hooked on Sedaris, last year).

I've been known to read 2 or 3 books at a time, but usually devote my time to finishing one particular book, while any remaining ones take a backseat. I'm also sorta kinda reading The Glass Castle by Jeannette Walls at the moment, but I've taken a break from that book to plough through Vowell's.

That's disappointing that her book isn't very good.  She's always so entertaining on This American Live.

I watched the movie and it was a bit of a let-down, even though I read about it beforehand and knew what they would be leaving out. I really enjoyed the book though, once I got into it. I liked the dark atmosphere. It was a really thought-provoking novel.

I have yet to see the movie, but my friend really liked it. Does it leave out the more obscene details, or just substance in general? I have been told that it is pretty graphic, but I am not sure.

The movie A Clockwork Orange is a classic.  I highly recommend it.  I loved it and the book.

Have you read any other books by Charles Dickens? If so, what were they and what did you think of them?

I've only read Oliver Twist and Nicholas Nickleby, which I read when I was around 13 and I think I would probably enjoy it much more now.  I remember at the time I was really busy so I'd go for like 2 weeks without reading it at all and totally forget everything that happened.  I think I'll be giving it another go.  Do you like his books?

I just really wanted to read something by Dickens after watching all the Masterpiece Theatre/BBC productions of his works this summer.  They're incredible.  I'll be picking up David Copperfield next, I think.

Oh and a Christmas Carol, which of course I loved.  How could I not?

Well, I just finished reading Oliver Twist today.

In case someone doesn't know, it's the story of a tragically unlucky orphan who ends up in the hands of a these despicable thieves before being temporarily rescued by much nicer people.  And repeat.

I loved it.  The ending was beautiful and it was really funny at times.  I read it in just a few days, which is really unusual for me, but I just couldn't put it down.

I have been recommending it to my friends.

I stick to one at a time.  Otherwise, I just end up reading the one I'm enjoying the most and never finish the others.
