I didn't ask this question to get bashed for not using a condom! I was just curious about the technicallities of why so many women say that the pull-out method failed them. We are not just a couple of teenagers with raging hormones, we are both college graduates, have been living together for 2 years, and have decided to use the pull out method as a "if it happens, great, but if not, that's okay too" kind of thing. I really was just curious. |

| Weight Loss | I wonder...calories/biggest loser | Oct 22 2009 02:23 (UTC) |

I'm not saying that I agree with all of the methods used on biggest loser, but you all have to remember that the contestents on this show are severely OBESE.. like 300, 400 pounds! Although their strategies are a little extreme, they are being supervised at all times by medical profesionals.... and in my opinion, the damage of being obese FAR outweights the damage of losing that extra weight maybe too quickly. I think it's better to have them lose a bunch of weight and be in a healthy range and then even if they gain a few pounds after the show, they wouldn't be obese. Does that make sense at all? |

Well i dont know about the OP, but I dont think you over complicated things :) I like the idea of averaging the deficits out over the course of a week instead of aiming for a 500 deficit every day.. sounds like it'd be more flexable...thanks for the tip! |

I'd just like to add that 1 week is not a plateau! You have lost a lot of weight in just 5 weeks, and your body is probably just adjusting. Also, (please correct me if I'm wrong..) For people who have said that you're losing too much, 20 pounds in 5 weeks is about 4 pound loss per week. Experts say that you're supposed to lose 1-2% of your body weight a week... and for you 4 pounds is a 1.5% weightloss. Which is perfectly acceptable. As you continue to lose weight, however, your weightloss will slow down, and that's normal. |

madamq and razure_rose: THANK YOU for your posts!! I read this thread all the way through and NO ONE was contradicting the people who agreed that a size 8 on a petite woman is "chunky".... i was getting pretty discouraged seeing as I am a size 6-8! ...and I am definitely not chunky by any means! So it was really good to see that there are still some people with realistic veiws on size/weight etc.

You've probably been told that BMI is useless because it doesn't take into account a person's body composition. Muscle weighs more than fat, so a musclular person could tip the BMI scales as 'overweight' but not really be overweight. I think measuring your bodyfat is a much more helpful tool to set healthy goals. How many times a day do you run? You didn't really specify that.. but even so, I agree with G.I. Jane that you're probably moderately active rather than lightly active. I plugged in your numbers into a calories needs calculator and at your activity level, you can eat between 1800(for about 2lbs per week loss) to 2300(for a 1lb per week loss) and still lose weight. As far as the weight lifting, that's great for toning, and you definitely don't have to worry about getting bulky, even if you're doing a "man's" workout. But it might be a good idea to check on form to make sure you won't cause any injuries. Good luck! |

Everything the two posters said above is great advice, and good links! But I'd like to add that a BMI of 24.5 is not overweight.. AND that your BMI is probably on the higher end of healthy because of all the muscle you must have from working out excessively. (muscle really does weigh more than fat.. it's much denser and more compact!) Instead of using BMI as a measure, you could look at your body fat, which is probably in the fitness level.

It's really interesting to see you guys's posts... how people's perception of right and wrong behavior in this situation varies greatly. It has opened my eyes and helped me to see things from a different perspective. taylor, i was not expecting him to be alone and celibate waiting for me and to those who said that im a bad person and that he's better off without me because i was snooping in his email... i completely understand where that's coming from, but i wish you could try to get your point of view across in a way that's not snarky and insulting. |

pgeorgian, for your information, i wasn't referring to your post.. i was referring to some other people's more flippant comments. so what if i chose that picture for my avatar? that's totally irrelevant to what we're discussing. But if you have to know, i think the olsens are pretty girls, and loved watching full house when i was young. geez, 'scuze me. |

wowww you guys need to stop bashing her. have you bothered to even check out her profile? she is 5'7" 120 pounds and recovering from unhealthy eating habits. she is thin, and from her pictures, she is obviously fit. She can take a day off from running if she feels like it. show a little sympathy. |

When I was very thin (grew a lot of inches but didn't gain weight.. awkward teen phase :p) people made comments about me being "fat" ALL the time. they didn't actually mean it though, they were just being sarcastic BECAUSE i was thin. Even today, I still don't understand why people think it's OK to poke fun at a thin person like that. Your perception might be off too... you are making assumptions about what your parents think about you. Maybe they notice that you're in a better mood after you workout and want you to be happy :) There are so many other reasons they might want you to exercise than the conclusion that you've jumped to. I find it hard to believe that they think you are fat, because you are far from it. when i first saw your profile pic, i thought you used a model's picture!!!!! Like another poster said, I would kill for your butt :D

lol. yes, I know people flirt.. but I feel like he went too far when he was talking to me on the phone telling me he loves me while at the same EXACT time flirting with other girls online. That worries me when I consider dating him again. And it wasn't just a "you're pretty" kind of flirt, which is fine... it was more of a "do you have a boyfriend? maybe we could go to the movies" kind of flirting. He was actively looking for someone else at the same time he was telling me im "the one". Am I really overreacting and being unreasonable? |

The big deal is that he isn't being true to his word. He was lying to me the whole time he said he wanted to get back together. I can handle things like rejection or insults, but the thing I hate most is dishonesty. I cannot be with a guy that I feel like I can't trust. I can't be with a guy that I will always doubt whether he's telling me the whole truth. And it makes me sad, because I was ready to try again with him, but now I can't, knowing that he lied to me. Yes, I know that it was only internet-flirting, but as far as I'm concerned, he might as well have had a full-blown fling with all three of the girls... it's not the level of deception that matters, it's the fact that he was being dishonest in the first place that upsets me. |

aww it's ok. i was kind having a moment.. one of those days, you know? not your fault at all! anyway, i'm pretty sure our measurements are pretty average, not "huge" at all....you must've been tiny before you were pregnant to think that! But yeah, don't be so hard on yourself, you just had a baby only 3 months ago for heavens sake! lol. Are those your kids in your profile pic? they're adorable :) |

Those are my exact measurements, and I haven't even been pregnant. It's posts like these that make me doubt myself, because I thought I looked pretty good, and didn't think there was anything wrong with those measurements until I read this. |

im not a guy, but I would much rather have curves in the right places (boobs and butt) than be shaped like a rectangle and have skinny chicken legs. But for every woman, there is a guy who will worship her body, no matter what it looks like.
...and bananapancake... 35" hips are NOT wide hips! lol. they are actually med-small... I have wide hips.. 39" and my boyfriend LOVES my bum. |

many, many thanks to raginheadache for taking the time to answer my question about teen development. I never took organ development into consideration, so that helps me to understand why i need more calories than an adult female. I thought 1300 cals sounded like a ridiculously low estimate too, even for someone who was fully developed. It's surprising to me, because I've heard such good reviews on the phord.com/cc website. I will be MUCH happier on 1800-2000 calories! That's actually how much I normally eat when I just pay attention to my hunger and eat HEALTHY foods, so that should not be a problem. It's hard to believe it's that simple. I just have to focus on keeping the exercise consistent. .
GI Jane.. I LOVE that website. Very sensible advice and information. I have added it to my bookmarks toolbar :-)
Thank you BOTH for clearing up the activity level question. |

G.I. Jane!!!!! Wow, I'm so excited that YOU replied to my post! I've seen your replies to so many people, and I am a big fan of yours! (makes me sound kind of like a psycho stalker, but i'm not, i promise!) You just really seem to know your stuff... and I guess I am more developed than other girls my age. I would much rather keep my curvy shape than have the skinny chicken legs of girls who are lighter than me, and it's a lot more attractive having boobs and a butt than being underweight and flat-chested and flat bottomed. So thanks for putting the numbers into perspective for me
any help is MUCH appreciated! |

so to lose 1lb a week i need to eat 1800 cals????(the calculator said that at a moderate activity level I burn 2300 cals...that's assuming i really am at a moderate activity level, what do you think?) that seems like so much! some calculators say that you need to be 18 yrs old to qualify as having the caloric needs of an adult...so i'm very confused. I am done growing............ and i have done 1800 cals before just to maintain! any thoughts, anyone? also, it was very depressing to see that i weigh more than about 75% of girls my age

I have tried to give him sneaky little "lessons" about weightloss... ex: he was boasting how his drink was only 60 calories, and I said, "but there are 8 servings in that container! So the whole thing is 480 calories." He really is so uninformed about health and weightloss.. he skips breakfast and sometimes dinner... and doesn't want to listen to me telling him that it is only hindering his efforts. He is completely sednetary.. a videogame nerd :-P But he has excuse after excuse.. bad knee, asthma, sick, tired. I invite him to go on walks with me, ask to go on dates with some activity such as bowling or ice skating.. but nothing. I know I can't force him to do anything, but it bothers me so much. Should I bring it up? If so, how do I do it delicately so he doesn't twist my words around and hear "you're fat, im not attracted to you, i don't love you" ?? Or should I just leave it and hope that in time he will realize his unhealthy ways? |

| Weight Loss | I'm so discouraged! What am I doing wrong????? | Feb 26 2009 21:48 (UTC) |

I have quite a small frame, and I look better at around 120-ish--everyone has told me so when i've asked. I have added weight training in the past 3 weeks... the weeks that I've gained 8 pounds. I have not lost inches, however, so the weight gain can't be contributed to muscle gain. I'm just feeling very confused why I've been gaining weight so steadily when I've been doing everything right. |

amethystgirl, thanks for the reading, it was very interesting. But I still don't understand why I am gaining from eating the MINUMUM requirement for me (according to the kids nutrition website you provided)... and I'm GAINING! i stopped growing height-wise several years ago..... I am only a few months from being 18 years old... should I really go by the adult recommendations that I eat 1200-1300 to lose weight now? |

well, according to this website: http://www.kidsnutrition.org/bodycomp/bmiz2.h tml I need about 2000 calories, since I am lightly active. When I use adult calculators such as www.phord.com/cc my results are about 1800 cals needed to maintain my current weight. Either way, I should be losing weight on 1400 cals, even just a little weight, not GAINING!!...... right? |

So I spent a week with my family and completely pigged out. went from 124 to 126, but it's mostly water weight. Today I started up again with Jillian Michaels. I have improved immensely in my endurance and strength. With the push ups I am doing half modified version and half "girlie" version. So definately improvement. I'll have to be better about making good food choices this week!
Hang in there, everyone! |
