thank you for the info!i was wondering about the rapid weight gain....how long does it usually take before you stop seeing the 3+lbs gain??yeah that was rude of her to do that.....im needing some answers thats all.also i had another question, ive noticed that after i eat and stuff, all the weight goes right to my stomach/abdomen area.....is this normal?????will it stay there forever or will it distribute out.......sorry about all the spelling errors i put up before!i type fast and didnt proofread before posting....haha.....thanks again!

You wont get any real support, anwsers etc here in this forum. I encourage you to have a look at the something fishy website. You will get support there, you will be challenged on some of the thinking that goes with ED's but most importantly, you will get answers to questions without being made to feel bad.

Why would i want/ need to do these things. I am simply saying that ED's are mental illnesses too and that people here should have a little compassion for those who ask questions or need support.

Is this a professional opinion Arguskin?????????

I have no need or reason to do as you have suggestion but this is exactly what im talking about. Trying to make someone feel small of expressing opinions. I only hope i dont have the unpleasent experience of meeting both of you IRL, personally and professionally.

i dont care if i get flamed for this : SHUT UP.

you may choose to be smoosh and soft cuddle and wrap the ed in cotton wool.... i dont choose to beat you up on your perspective.

dont attack me on mine

You say you dont choose to beat me up on my perspective, yet i get a big SHUT UP for a comment i make. Grow the **** up and get a life Fidget, you seem to have this opinion of yourself as someone who knows all, whos views should be followed as if they are law. Dont make people feel small, its not a nice trait. Did you not go to the bedside manners part of you training.

I can only say that i hope i never have to come to you as a patient.

I dont see why you could not have said -- "yup its all normal, here check out this thread, it has some great resources".

All im saying is that if we were to go with the "these posts have come up tiem and time again" and were to simply refer people to other threads when they have a question, then this forum would be dead. Have you ever gone into the weight loss forum and seen a question you think is stupid, that its been asked time and time before...... do you refer that person to a previous thread.

ED's are a health and support issue, that why the threads are posted in that forum. When someone who is in active recovery posts wanting support, why not just give it to them instead of being nasty.

I get it Fidget, you have recovered from your ED. You know all the answers, its all so simple to you now. Fair enough, you have come through it to the other side, which is awesome....... But when you were deep in it, im sure you had the same concerns that people post about here. I myself get frustrated with some of the posts, but i dont make people feel bad for seeking answers/support, i simply dont answer.

this is not an eating disorder forum... please read the posts at the top. there is a link in the health and support forum wher there are oodles and oodles of these questions which have already been answered.

the rule with posting here, is that you dont unless you are eating 2500+

My god, is this now your standard answer for every ED related post. I get it that you are sick of people posting about ed's but its a real issue for real people. No where in this post is there any pro-ana statements, shes simply asking if this is all normal, asking for advice.

Im sure that when you were in the depths of your own ed, when you started reaching out for help, you had lots of questions, concerns, worries. Im sure if you had posted something similar on this forum, with good intentions, you would have liked to have had some type of support or atleast have someone answer your questions.

I get it, you dont like the ED posts, but let me ask you a question. If some posts here about depression, anxiety, OCD, schizophrenia (as they do by the way) would you tell them that this is not a depression, anxiety etc forum and dont post here.

Ed's are mental illnesses, have a f**king heart

You live in NZ right??

At pretty much all of the supermarkets you can buy cans of four or five bean mix that are in a king of brine. I used to buy them, drain and rinse them then mix into it chopped cucumber, red onion, capsicum........ all types of things. Then i would make a vineagrette or if i was being lazy add french dressing, italian dressing (like those eta ones) or balasamic vineager to it. Soooooooo tastey!!!

You could get some ideas of types of bean salads and what to put in them by checking out the ones that are pre-made and sole in the deli section of the supermarket. New World has a really good range.

Calorie-wise, 1 tbsp of oil has about 120 cals. The difference between oils is the amount of good vs. bad fats within it. But you're looking at 120 cals per tbsp.

Those tomatoes are actually called 'sundried tomatoes' and no, CC's listing doesn't include the oil. If you take the tomato out of the oil & pat it with a paper towel, you'll eliminate most of the fat calories. You can buy these not packed in oil too.

In all the supermarkets ive been to, i cant get them not packed in oil. I live in NZ and i guess we dont really have a huge variety of brands available.

I dont put the oil on my salad or what ever i add them too, so i guess that eliminates some of the calories. Will start patting the oil off them.

They are just o tastey, and i just wondered how good/ bad they actually are for me.

If you find that drinking your extra calories is easier then go for it. I would stick with three meals a day, three normal meals, nad then add in the extra calories with calorific drinks such as...

Full milk smoothie - (milk at a min 2%, maybe some berries, a banana and some yogurt)

Milkshake - (milk, ice cream, choc syrup - or your could mix in a choc spread like nutella)

Fruit juice is good

Or you could try getting some weight gain specific drinks like ensure, fortisip, boost etc

Swimfan - I dont know what it was when i was around 20 that changed. Dont get me wrong i still have issues, i have an ED. BUT i no longer engage in all those other self destructive behaviours. I stopped SI, which as you know is difficult. BUT i realised that i felt so so bad after doing it, i felt ashamed and bad, and i realised that stopping would help me more than doing it. I havnt SI'd now for 3 years.

I havent taken an overdose since i was 17. Ive thought about it but i can now rationalize the thoughts and realise that its not going to make anything better, it will only hurt my family more etc. I have put my family through hell and i feel so so guilty about it.

I think its been 3 years since i spent any time on a psych IP ward, but i have had one admission to an ed unit for a breif stay to stabilize my eating patterns.

I havnt had much therapy but ive studies psychology, ecletic counselling, narrative therapy etc. It has taught me that it is the meaning of situations that i make that causes me to act in certain ways and feel the way i feel. I have learnt to sit back at look at situations more and rationalise why i feel that way i do.

The reason i mentioned a residential treatment facility is because what you wrote sound alot like someone struggeling with BPD. I was mistakingly diagnosed as a teen and like i said, i guess i grew out of the behaviours that lead people to think maybe i had BPD.

Residential treatment can be helpful when you are struggeling with a range of self destructive behaviours and dont seem to be able to stop by yourself. It can help you by allowing you a safe place to feel what you need to feel, think what you need to think, and work on the issues that you face. If you have people to turn to 24/7 when you feel like SI'ing then it can help you to stop. If you have someone to go to when you feel like you want to OD, then it can help you to sit with the feelings and move past them.

When i say residential treatment i mean a theraputic boarding school or actual treatment facility where you stay for a long period of time, and really work on getting well. I know that there are psych hospitals that have BPD specific treatemtn programmes that are 6-12 months long, where you stay there, get therapy, medication management, life skills, grounding skills etc.

I just think that you are so young and you deserve a good, happy, healthy life, and sometimes that means taking time out of "life" and going somewhere where your energy and focus is on working on the issues that cause you to behave the way you do.

I went through alot of the same stuff you have written about here. Was hospitalized multiple times during my adolescence and attempted suicide three times. I can tell you that you will get well, you will come through it, you will be ok. I was very unwell for atleast seven years, but things seemed to improve around when i turned 20. I think alot of my issues were caused by hormone problems, a very stressed home environment and some really bad self esteem problems.

Meds can only do so much, you need to combine therapy as well.

Are you in the states?? Would a theraputic school, residential treatment facility, or something similar be available to you. Psych wards are generally acute stays, treating the severe here and now problems but to really get well sometimes what is needed is a long term stay in a theraputic environment where you live, get therapy, treatment, support, can continue school etc. Would this be a possibility for you????

Pregnancy & Parenting Pregnant friend Nov 25 2009
08:13 (UTC)

Thanks for the replies.

The reason my friend is so weary about medication is because for five years while trying to get pregnant she was using a variety of over the counter herbal remedies for depression and sleep aids. It turns out that some of those that she took were natural abortives, so all this time, she may very well have fallen pregnant multiple times but the baby was abortited very early into it due to these herbal medications. She is terrified of taking anything but has been chewing quickeze like candy.

Ive given her some liquid gaviscon to try and she also has so losec, which she has been told should be fine to take.

I like the idea of a pampering day out, might try to arrange something for her. Im house sitting for her for a few weeks as she has alot of out of town engagments to attend, so not sure when i can arrage something for her but will give it a go.

I just hate seeing her so upset and i really dont know what to say to her. I feel like a hypocrite saying anything about weight gain to her. I suffer from an ED and i totally get the emotions that weight gain can bring but i feel like i dont have the right to say anything comforting to her about it because of my ED.

I guess i just need to try and listen and be a sounding board for her. 17 weeks to go, so hopefully the last part is a little better. Then again, its coming into the hottest part of the year here and i can imagine that it wont be too fun.

Ugh this makes my heart hurt. I hate it that society forgets the older generation. These people deserve to be loved and cared for, they deserve it!!!!

My dad has medication delivered to him every week. He isnt able to get out of the house, and without his meds he would die. People like you really do provide a life saving service.

Im guna go with what others here have said. Take him the meal, dont ask, just do it.

I dont know how things work in other countries but there must be a serivce or agency you could notify about this gentleman, that you are concerned for his wellbeing and could someone look in on him and check it out.

I know that many older people really want to stay in their own homes, remain as independent as possible, so maybe an agency can provide him with some sort of support without him having to leave his home if he doesnt want to.

Could you look up what services are available to older people in your community??

Pregnancy & Parenting Any parents to teens - my son is makig me crazy! Nov 24 2009
08:57 (UTC)

Is there any family that your son could stay with for a while. I know that i put my parents through hell as a teen. I moved out of home for a month to try and help the situation, give my parents a break from me, me a break from them. Is that a possibility for you and your family???

What about getting your son into therapy. When teens are this manipulative, getting police and CPS involved in normal everyday situations, then something else must be going on in his head, for him to be acting on in this way, to this level of extremes. Any possibility here??

I dont know how CPS works in the States, but is it possible for you to let them know that you are concerned about his behaviour and believe that he would benefit from some type of psychological/behavioural intervention???

I am a member of a recovery site called somethingfishy. It really is a great, supportive recovery orientated site that helps people at all stages of recovery, be it just considering it, to full recovery. I really do encourage you to join. There are no weights, numbers, calories, or medical details allowed to prevent anything that may trigger anyone else.

I find that it really does help to be able to get out all that your feeling sometimes in an environment where no one knows you and judge you. I encourage you to give it a try.

Weight Gain Is it ok to eat junky food or is that cheating? Nov 24 2009

Original Post by celestia007:

So, is it bad for one's body to eat junk (on occasion) when on a weight gain diet? (I'm aiming for 1800 calories) and currently at 89 lbs, 5" 3....

Or, better just to shut down those thoughts and avoid it all together for the time being?

Thanks for your input! :)

Your calorie aim/intake is too low to begin with. You need to be having 2500 to gain!!!!

As for junk food, its not nutritionally dense, your body needs vitamins, minerals, good fats, protein etc to repair the damage done while being underweight. Gaining weight is important but so is repairing your body. You will gain by eating junk food but it doesnt have the nutrients needed for body repair.

I would say that like anyone else, eating junk is ok definatly !!!! Once in a while is fine, i guess it would even be ok to add so called junk items into your meal plan everyday (ie - a choc bar as part of a snack, ice cream for dessert etc) but if you were guna try basing your main meals around items like big macs, youre not really guna get the nutrition that you need. Again, having a big mac, chicken nuggets etc for a meal once or twice a week is sweet but not every day.

Weight Gain Trouble with meal timing Nov 24 2009
00:48 (UTC)
11

Youre having breakfast kind of late which is making all your meals late.

Why not try ...............

800 -830 -  Breakfast

1000 - 1030 -  Morning tea

1200 -100- Lunch

300-330 - Afternoon tea

600-700 - Tea

900 - 930 - supper

Since you worry about the later meals, for supper you could have a calorie dense drink instead of food. So maybe a full milk hot choc or latte or milkshake.

Health & Support Missing periods and normal weight? Nov 23 2009

I lost my period at a normal, healthy weight but it was/s due to starvation etc. I have a normal healthy body fat % but i have lost my period anyway. I did get it back once for a couple of cycles when i was eating healthier and my body was more nourished. I think it has alot to do witht he amount of weight you have lost and how fast. If you have lost a significant amount of weight in a short space of time then that may very well be a cause of the loss of your menstural cycle.

In saying that, a few years ago i was only gettin a period once every few months. Went to the doctor, she thought it was likely to be cause by weighing too much. Anyway turned out i had a cyst on one of my ovaries so that when i ovulated fromt hat ovary, it was just helping the cyst to grow, and only mensturating when i ovulated from the other ovary.

Best thing to do is to see your gp.

Youve already answered your own question. If you gain on 2000 then maintainance cals will be lower, if you gain on 2500 then maintainance cals will be higher. If you were previously eating 2000cals and maintaining but are now eating 2000 and gaining then your maintanance cals will be lower.

think you posted before about being hungry on 2000 cals and worried about how hungry you will be on lower maintance cals. I think it would be better to increase the cals to 2500, gain on that then you can eat more on maintance and not be hungry.

Health & Support is it my fault? am i too weak or is ED too strong? Nov 17 2009
07:28 (UTC)

Personally i think its good to "personify" the eating disorder. If it is a seperate thing, seperate from the person then their is less self blame and self hate, less guilt because the eating disorder is not the person, it is something that affects the person but it is not them, it is not part of them. I think that by recognising that then the person can fight against it more.

Many many people may not agree with me but then i am a fan of narrative therapy which emphasises this approach and looking at how the "story" of ed impacts on the persons life and how you can fix the problems in the story (anorexia/bulimia) instead of the problem being within the person and trying to fix something that is worng with them.

Anyway, Sarah - you can fight ED but i think it is very very important to have help and support. You need a team of people (family, friends, professionals) with you to help you fight against ed.

Do your family support you, is there anything that they can do to help you??

Have have Reynauds and there isnt much you can do. My GP did put me on a blood pressure med once to try and help with it because i had such severe chill blanes on my fingers and hands i was in pain. Its something to do with your blood vessels constricting too much so that the blood doesnt get to your hands/fingers, feet/toes. The blood pressure med was supposed to increase my BP to try get the blood to my fingers and toes, but i guess im just so used to it now that it doesnt bother me (unless i have chill blanes as well).

Maybe try your luck with a thrid Dr, ask about Reynauds and your iorn and make sure you get the info you want/need

Health & Support Why does my body punish me? Nov 11 2009

A 2lb gain in one night is not real weight. I had a 4lb gain in one night and i was so upset, i knew it wasnt real but it upset me anyway. I figured out that it was most likely due to the fact, that while i had had alot to drink that day, i had mostly diet soda and diet energy drinks = LOTS of sodium. That was the cause of my gain. Its gone today and an extra bit, so no biggie.

Eating only 800-1200 cals is going to seriously mess up your metabolism. If your body learns to function on so little cals your metabolism will slow down. It will learn that it needs to hold onto weight so when you do eat more, you are more likely to gain weight.

If you raise your cals up, you will initially gain a couple of water weight lbs but it will speed up your metabolism so that you wont have such a small number of maintance cals when it gets to that point. If you are losing on 800-1200 then maintance is only going to be about 1500-1700 clas. Thats really a dieting calorie number. If you raise you cals to say 1400-1800 cals then your metabolism will speed up and maintance cals will be higher, say 1800-2100.

Wouldnt you prefer to be eating more and still losing weight??

I do understand the fear that you will put all the weight back on but if you have gone about this weight loss as a lifestyle change then you wont put weight back on. 800-1200 isnt a lifestyle change its a desperate attempt to lose weight fast, and yes if you keep it up you will most likely put some of it back on. Increase the cals, make healthy lifestyle changes and you will get the weight off and keep it off.

Could be that you have or had a uninary tract infection. Ive heard that urgency is a symptom, ie. the feeling of needing to go.

It could be that the reason for wetting the bed was a deep sleep combined with a UTI.

Maybe go to your GP and get tested for a UTI.

Health & Support Have to Wake Up Very Early To Use The Bathroom? Nov 06 2009

I had a flatmate who had major problems with being able to go #2 and he said that it was related to being able to relax. He said that his doctor recommended to him that he should give himself a long time in the bathroom, not just get it over and done with type thing. He put a gameboy type thing in the bathroom, and would sit there for ages and just play it while on the toilet. He said that it helps help relax so that he could go.

Prehaps the fact the mornings are so rushed on weekdays, you arent able to relax. I know that if im rushing out the door, even if i need to go, i cant just sit around on the toilet for half an hour trying to go. Being able to relax and let your body doing its thing is a big part of it i think.

Could you try getting yup 15 mins - half an hour earlier, having a nice warm cup of water (told this helps) or coffee (definatly works for me) and go sit on the toilet for 15 mins or so, try and relax, maybe read a magazine. After the time is up and you still havnt gone, then go about you normal morning routine, and hope it works the next day i guess.

Ok so i posted this a few days ago?? and the situation is the same, no better, but no worse thankfully.

However, i am perscribed a stool softener to help with this ongoing problem, which i take once in the morning and once at night. I am terrified to take it because if terrified of making this pain any worse. I am chronically constipated and my stool is always ummmmmmmm hard. I am scared of having a bowel movement, i know that if i dont take the medication i wont have one, was hpoing that i would be much better by today and could start taking them without having to worry to much about pain. But im not better and i know that if i dont take them the problme will get worse and eventually i will have to start again so i can have a bowel movement, eeeeeeek.

Really dont know what to do, is having a bowel movement going to be a horribly painful experience and make the piles worse????

No, what do you mean??

Im reading this as, you will have to eat soft foods for a few days and you are scared that when you have healed enough to eat a normal diet again, that you will be too scared to. Why???? Is that fear related to pain, or the ED voice. If its ED related then this is something you need to discuss with a T or your GP. If thoughts like these then you need to work more on your mental recovery, in addition to your nutritional recovery.

I didnt think of taking any type of pain relief medication would help but will go take some panadol now and hope that helps.

In the past they have only been this bad for a day or so, so hopefully by morning they will have gone down and be less painful. Doesnt help that im doing exams right now, so i am sitting the majority of the day.

Thank you so much for the advice. I also have a hot water bottle handy, as its still very winterish here, so will give that a go too.
