Vegetarian Vegetarian diet question Feb 28 2007

Kargue, you sound simlar to me!  I cant cook either. :P

but I've actually heard the most heart healthy/cancer free diets are ones that are a lot higher in carbs than even the USDA recommends.  A lot of people in third world countries that have very low fat diets (less than 10%) and mediocre fiber and high carb diets have VERY low rates of diabetes (almost none) and some of the lowest rates of cancer ever.

However, I still need to lose weight though, so Im doing SOMETHING wrong (ie. eating out with coworkers)

Anyways, I LOVE whole wheat pita bread, peppered tofurkey with alfalfa sprouts jammed in there with some hummus or low fat mayo and mustard.

For the most part, I hate tofu.

I've never had issues with fainting like that so Im totally unhelpful but I can imagine tis really scary!

Sounds like (with your pale lips and things) its a circulation problem though . . . I dont know what foods would help with that.  Maybe folate and heart healthy vitamins?

Im no doctor though and have no previous issues with fainting so take my diagnosis with a grain of salt.

omgomgomg!! I LOVE OPRAH!!

Okay sorry.

She always says that if there was an easy way to lose weight, she'd have it bc she's so rich.
So I love her attitude.

She always says that you MUST workout 5 days a week.  NO EXCUSES.  And in addition to that, you must eat correctly.

Remarkably, shes still human and has faults.  Her successes and failures should not affect your motivation or any such thing.  You are responsible for your weight and Oprah is responsible for her weight.

I remember my friend gained weight, and I guess I thought it was more acceptible for me to gain weight.
Husbands gain weight when their wives are pregnant.
Why do we do this sympathy weight gain stuff?  (or in your case .. why do we do this "im unmotivated now bc this other person is unmotivated" slacking off?)

Weight Loss Time and Calories Feb 28 2007

I find that I seem to lose weight easier when I eat the bulk of my calories in the morning and taper off during the day.

I personally think a high protein/low fat/low carb will be especially difficult to find foods to that fit in that realm for your diet.  And, as you know from regaining some of your weight, once you quit eating like that, you gain all your weight back.

I see some things inherently wrong with high protein low carb diets

Most animal meat has fat in it.  Especially red meat.  High protein low fat is going to be hard to consistently eat.  Making your diet more likely to fail.

Meat has links to cancer (but what doesnt?).  However, that doesnt mean you need to completely ignore this fact and overconsume it.  In addition you will be limiting your cancer fighting foods (like fruits and veggies)  - which would be a "no no" on your diet.  So its basically a double whammy.  People with diets low in fruit tend to have higher rates of bladder and colon cancers.

When your body goes into ketosis from the low carb diets, you WILL lose weight.  Which is great, right?  No.  Once you reintroduce fruits and vegetables, your body will start storing that meat and the fat in the meat as fat again.  And unless you stay in that dangerous restrictive carbohydrate mode ... you will gain weight when you reintroduce even the HEALTHIEST of carbs.  And you can NOT get the right nutrients and things out of a bottle that fruits and veggies give you.
So - stay on high protein/low carb diet and risk your health?
I mean, you can smoke cigarrettes or take crack and get the same effect.  But no one suggests that because its so obviously unhealthy.  Well, to me, so are restrictive carb diets.

I just really want people to be safe with their dieting.

Weight Loss Is "starvation mode" a real thing? Feb 26 2007

I guess my question stems from wondering how my body can do a 360 and actually gain weight if I eat too few calories, but other people can literally starve themselves to thinness. (not to make light of any illnesses or even call into question the health issues related to doing something so drastic)

I dont think thats logically possible.  Just from a thermodynamics viewpoint.  Matter is neither created nor destroyed .... if you arent intaking anything and then you are only expending energy ... then of course you will lose weight.

But, when you are a smaller size and your body has burned muscle and fat, then your body is going to use less calories.  And when you return to the way you previously ate ... you will gain all that weight back and then more.

I used to go on and off [water] fasts a lot and was not near as big then as I am now.
I dont think its possible to gain weight while fasting properly.

I think the "starvation mode" weight gain happens to MOST people when they enter into a starve/binge cycle.  That one day of "binging" wreaks havoc on their waistline.

Thats from personal experience and hearing other's situations.
My mom says she eats nothign a lot and then on the weekends she pretty much overeats and she is obese.

Here is an article that I actually was linked to from this site.
Living with Obesity at 700 calories a day

I suspect most peopel who are overweight and starve themselves live in some type of diet like the one mentioned in that article.

Dr. Oz suggests taking a calcium supplement daily.  After you turn 30 or so your body stops storing it naturally .... so the only calcium you get is the calcium from your diet.

You dont want to have weak bones and teeth and all that.

And for your body to absorb calcium it needs Vitamin D and something else.  Most calcium supplements already know this and have it already in the supplement.  Eat it with food as well, so the calcium will absorb better.  I think if it doesnt have the Vitamin D with it ... you only get about 25% of the calcium absorbed.

I take calcium supplements and sometimes I get calcium stuffiness in my nose.  I dont know its a weird feeling.  I might be getting too much or something . . .

I prefer exercising outside.  My house is some place that I rest at ...my haven.  I feel that if I saw a yoga ball in my living room that I would get used to it just sitting there.  I'll be watching tv and doing the exercises half a*sed.

Try to find good (safe) hilly trails.
Get an iPod (shuffle).
Or just an AM/FM radio and run run run.
Try bike riding, etc.
Try workout DVDs.  Do you have cable?  Fit Tv and even Discovery has workouts in the morning (I have TiVo so yay!)

Try the yoga classes, but you WONT get good cardio from yoga.  I take it about 2 times a week and its moreso for flexibility and strength.  If you look at most calorie burning things, yoga burns about half of what cycling and other things do.

I've personally never had luck keeping a good consistent working out routine inside my house.  So if you can, I deeply admire you!

I found when I was starting cardio and I wanted to increase and get better endurance that I went up minute by minute ... until one day I was magically able to increase it by ten minutes!  It was so weird.  But I've gotten out and in shape so many times that I find it happesn a lot.
Go up minute by minute and one day just try to press yourself beyond that extra minute you were going to go.
You'll be surprised what you can do.

I get really bad snot.  I just wipe it on my shirt.  All my shoulders on my shirts have snot stains on them until I wash it! Thank god for dark blueeeee.

I just think that your blood is flowing better and all that "gunk" is starting to circulate.
I tend to have to go pee or poo more too when I run ... blood is circulating faster to the intestines and kidneys.
Its good for you!
Right?

you cant spot reduce.

to make things look slimmer you have to lose weight all over and when that body part decides that its ready to lose weight ... then it'll happen.  :/

If you've ever seen the super obese or larger people in general lose weight, they typically lose it from the neck down.

Not to discourage weight lifting ... but weight lifting with the legs might even make your legs look bigger seeing how the muscle underneath the fat will get bigger.

However, those are the large muscles and will burn more calories while you are resting.

So short of lipo .... looks like you need to wait this one out until your body gets to that fat ....

Oh hon.  Take those college pictures!  If anything, in the future you can see how far you've come from your college days.

You need to be CONSISTENT to lose that weight though.  No skipping days.  No having "bad" days.  Keep it at your alloted calories or whatever (Im not too much of a fan of alloted calories bc as you lose weight, your body burns less calories .... thus slowing the weight loss for some people).
Just exercise 5 days a week.  And eat sensibly and do not lie to yourself about what you eat!  Eat whole grains, fruits, vegetables, beans ... make sure you get your fiber and poop a lot :D  Good luck and stay consistent!!

Oprah says if there was a magical way to lose weight, she would have bought it already!

PS.  If "walking" is your exercise be careful.  A lot of people dont walk fast enough for it to really improve your heart health.  If on a treadmill try to keep it above 3.5.  Yep, you should be going that fast.  Otherwise, stick with elliptical machines, swimming, and things not so hard on your joints.

Looks great to me.

But I hope you dont get burned out doing exercise in the morning and in the evening.  I find it easier (with my schedule) to do it all at once.

Any exercise program that you can stick with is the best.  If you can do the morning/evening thing then great.  But if you find yourself skipping every now and then, this plan (obviously) is not for you.

PS.  When I saw boot camp, I thought you were in a real "boot" camp urban adventure type class.  I used to do those and its so fun bc we do sprints up these hills, a lot of running up and down stairs, doing football type drills.  YOu meet so many people and really connect with them!

Hey, Im bulimic too.  And just know that binging and not purging doesnt mean that you are "recovering" from bulimia.

If you havent, you need to get into some kind of group or one on one therapy.  Group therapies are free and I can help you find some links to some free therapy in your area.  If you have the money, one on one therapy will probably be the best.  I dont know how serious your bulmia is but I hope it gets better for you!  Unfortunately, I havent really heard of anyone getting over an eating disorder with just willpower alone.  There are some unresolved issues in your life that you are solving with food.  Whether it be past abuse or just common anxiety/stress that you dont know how to handle.

Good luck.  If you need to talk, Im here!

Slipping on the mats
I had issues with slipping on the yoga mat too.
Just lay a towel at the top of your yoga mat.
Or they have yoga rugs.  That arent as "plastic" as the regular mats.

Changes I've noticed
I guess I've noticed my overall posture is greatly improved.  I LOVE that.  And my attitude towards food now is very "yoga" fied.  If that makes sense.  I mean, who wants to go to burger king after a yoga workout.   You are all in your tight pants and stuff.  Feeling all centered and "spiritual" and earthy.  So going to yoga helps me have a total attitude adjustment.
