I like plain Whey Protein, if I want to sweeten it up I can, but if I want just protein mixed with a glass of water I can do that as well. |

Pure whey protein can up your protein intake. I mix mine in 1% milk with a shot of espresso. If it is after a workout I also add a teaspoon of sugar and a teaspoon of cocoa powder. |

| Weight Loss | Where does weight go overnight? | Jul 18 2009 21:46 (UTC) |

The mass of the campfire ash is indeed less, but ,as susiecue noted, no mass disappeared. The making of the heat is a chemical reaction, so the body making heat does not eliminate mass. The mass that goes in is the amount that comes out. Unless you have kissing bugs around the weight lost while sleeping is moisture. When its cold and you see your breath fog up, that is moisture not heat, but hot air can hold more moisture so it is visible in contrast. Multiply the amount of moisture you see in your breath on a cold day times the number of times you exhale in a given night and it adds up very quickly. |

Energy and mass are not the same thing. When you burn firewood you do not convert the "weight" of the wood into heat. Your body is throwing off moisture all night, a sweat so light that it evaporates before it soaks the sheets and most through breathing. |

Original Post by adolphs: bmfan77 is right, your breath has a high moisture content. Remember breathing on glass and writing in it. As a backpacker I can tell you that a poorly vented tent, with a ground tarp, will be soaked on the inside from nothing more than your breath in the morning. |

| Weight Loss | Hello I'm a newbie and have a question | Jul 13 2009 16:44 (UTC) |

Some people set their activity level to sedentary, and then log each days activity. The idea is that it is more accurate, but also more time consuming. You can add anything from housework to kickboxing. Then on days you burn a lot more, you should eat more as well so that your calorie deficit never exceeds 1000 (500 makes more sense for your size) for any given day. I have read that the body can only burn 31 calories from each pound of fat each day, the rest comes from muscle. 31 X 16 = 496 calories from fat loss. Hit the free weights to preserve the muscle you have and maybe get some early gains as well. Weights also increase your metabolic burn for a day or two after each workout. |

I think it's time to switch to the metric system. 12 inches in a foot, 3 feet in a yard, 16 ounces in a pound. 5280 feet in a mile. And while we are at it how about one firm rule for spelling i before e and that's it no alternative Check the very bottom front of the tread mill or under the display for a switch. Also, you could figure out the model # and then google the instructions. |

Original Post by mr_omario: You are not being rude, just sharing your knowledge, and that is what these forums are meant to be for. “In the 10 studies reviewed, consumption of a caffeinated beverage resulted in 0 to 84 percent retention of the initial volume ingested, whereas consumption of water resulted in 0 to 81 percent retention.” Wikipedia Click on section 2.10 to find this reference - Contrary to popular belief, caffeine does not act as a diuretic when consumed in moderation, and does not lead to dehydration or to a water-electrolyte imbalance; current evidence suggests that caffeinated beverages contribute to the body's daily fluid requirements no differently than pure water does.[25][26][27][28] |

Your kidneys, if healthy can process up to 4 gallons of water a day (not all at once though). It is better to drink constantly throughout the day if possible. Coffee and Tea count towards your water needs as their diuretic reaction is insignificant. It would help to know the amounts (i.e. ounces, liters) you are drinking instead of pots and bottles. But assuming your pots came from a normal store and not one atop a beanstalk, I think you are fine. Watch the color of your urine, it should be closer to the clarity of water and further from yellow, unless you are taking a multivitamin and then watch for darker yellow as a sign of dehydration or check right before you take it. Even better try eating more of your water with things like watermelon and cucumbers.

I think I have read in other posts that if you are under 21 you need to use a different calculator, as you are still growing. (Insert more knowledgeable post below) IMHO I wish I would have stopped gaining a long time ago, it would have saved me a lot of work I have to do now in order to lose Your motivation, to stay on top of your health and to research doing things the correct way, is awesome. |

I have no idea what a doctor would do, but a calorie is a calorie. So if someone can get enough calories from a vegan diet, that is properly organized for nutrients, then I don't think it would be a problem. How long could you eat 900 calories a day, before your body started robbing your bones and bone marrow for nutrients? |

Original Post by fitmom4life: fitmom4life are you legaleli also? He was the one rambling about generalizations and claiming he wanted to see his girlfriend at 110 pounds, which is below what the bmi charts describe as healthy for her size, only to say "it was tongue in cheek" later. legaleli, the way you post is more like spamming the message boards, you are not adding anything new just regurgitating the same 1950's logic over and over again. That logic being that women should starve themselves to achieve weights that are unsustainable and damaging to their emotional and physical well being, all so they will appear to be more attractive to you. |

The whole idea of veganism to prevent cruelty seems idyllic and unattainable to me as long as we are buying non-food items made by humans, living and working in conditions we wouldn't want our chicken dinner to live in. |

Personally, I wanted to share a sustainable alternative with a non-antagonistic approach. I do cringe at the thought that we now have to Styrofoam and plastic wrap each apple, but you still have the freedom to do as you choose. Perhaps someone else who reads this thread will appreciate a different take on the question. Your question was answered by choose2loose in the second reply. (The preservatives they are most likely using are not harmful and the apple is still nutritious) other post are just adding to the topic. |

I agree with pgeorgian we do live in a disposable world, and we are throwing it away one piece at a time. But alas, that is not the topic, but it doesn't mean we can't combine the two. Buy apples and an apple corer (for those not handy with knives). Core and slice your apple dip it in a fruit preservative (absorbic acid, lemon or the like) following package instructions. When finished store it in a reusable container to minimize waste. I do it for dehydrating fruits and veggies to snack on for the week or backpacking trips. I am so lazy I would probably just eat the apple while walking to the theater |

Rinsing with hot does remove more fat. Experiment, drain and dab, then rinse under hot water but collect the runoff in a large bowl, the fat will seperate and become obvious. I also rinse off canned beans and canned tuna to lower the sodium content. |

My twin daughters were four years old, and had just finished watching Free Willy. Later that day we went swimming. As usual they climb on me while we horse play and I drag them around the pool, when one of them starts yelling "swim Willy swim" then the other joined in her excitement. All of this was at a pool in our apartment complex, so we were not alone. They would have said the same thing to me if I were at a healthy weight, showing how the same comment could be taken differently. Until I lose the weight, I will not take them to Sea World...

You could skip the egg white if you are worried about biotin binding, or you could have two yolks and one white. (I assume know one is trying to live off of raw eggs). I think with a well balanced diet, and assuming a couple of eggs a day biotin binding is a non issue for people who are healthy and not pregnant. |

| Foods | Raw Eggs? | Feb 14 2009 18:35 (UTC) |

From what I have read, a raw product contains more nutrients, where as heat or cooking tends to deplete them. Raw meat is better for you in the regards, but it is not really viable given the environment and process it goes through. You would get sick if you ate raw meat regularly, assuming you weren't raising the livestock yourself. A rare steak is better for you and reduces the the chance of getting sick as the outside is cooked and the inside temperature stays low. The outside is where most of the bacteria would form. That's why you should cook your hamburgers to well done, as all it is exposed during processing i.e. it is all surface area. Amino acids are heat sensitive so lower cooking times and temps are better. Best solution is to find someone who has some chickens and get unpasteurized eggs from them (knowing they are fresh) and consume raw within a week or look for eggs from organic cage free chickens. |

I have consumed raw eggs for years. I use the freshest ones I can get. There is a possibility of getting sick. I believe the chance is very slim (personally). I have yet to get sick from raw eggs. (Not exactly a scientific study) Good luck to you whatever you choose. |
