A 17yr old won't have the same body as an 18yr old it's hard to accept, but it's true. Women often get confused as they stop growing in height they think they are done growing but the truth is your skeleton carries on developing until you are in your early 20s and the shape of your body will be changing too.

Keep up the exercise and eat plenty of healthy food but don't worry about a number on a scale too much until you've got used to having an adult's body as opposed to a teenagers body.

The best way to not "HAVE to give in" is don't ban yourself from having it. I eat what I want.

Food is just that - food. I like chocolate, so today at some point I'll have some, I think that about 260 calories will get me a nice chocolate bar and if I have a sandwich with salad for lunch then I can have that chocolate guilt free later.

Hedgren is right the way to make it stick is change one thing at a time. This takes longer but that's partly because you only change things that you can see your self doing long term. The problem with the 'diet' frame of mind is you try to do everything at once and then go back to doing nothing when you fail/finish.

I'd start by tracking everything I do and eat for a week; without changing anything at all.

This hopefully will show up some things it would be easy to add or remove from your life for ever, for instance I worked out that a friend of mine could lose 7lbs a year by stopping taking sugar in his tea! I added in an extra 20mins walking before work.

Just pick one thing and stick to it, once that is no longer an effort pick another. Eventually you will need to set a calorie target and stick to it but starting all at once just isn't for everyone.

You won't always get what you want, thin or not, and blaming yourself isn't fair. This is one of the reasons why weight-loss has to be for yourself.

The first step in being more attractive to others is in liking yourself, how ever you are. Work on self confidence as you approach you goal, things as silly as telling yourself you look good every day really work. Try and concentrate on doing things for yourself - be a bit selfish sometimes and put your self first. Once you get more comfortable with who you are other people will see how great you are too.

You should start to see the weight come off even in the first week on the scale but you probably won't see it in the mirror until you have lost about 10lbs so in a couple of months. Other people generally notice before you but it's hard to see when you look at yourself every day.

I also agree with hedgren you should make sure you get at least 1600 calories a day for optimum weight loss and move this as you lose http://www.phord.com/cc/ is great for checking up on this.

Weight Loss How slow is slow for last 10 pounds? Nov 12 2009

0.25 lbs a month sounds about right if you are just doing what you were before. I think that for that last bit you really need to up the exercise.

Sometimes your body just doesn't want to lose any more though. Taking a break for a while and then starting again in a month or so might help but really really slow is what you can expect.

Weight Loss 3 weeks no weight loss! Nov 10 2009
20:47 (UTC)

Getting 1400 a day would add up to 2000 extra calories a week. That's a whole 2 days extra food your missing from you diet.

At 1000 calories a day you body will be have lost weight by 'burning' muscle and fat. Once your body realised it wasn't going to get more food it just slowed everything down a bit.

Carrying on at 1000 calories a day would result in you carrying on burning a mixture of muscle and fat but slowly (as opposed to mainly fat) you would almost certainly be missing some essential nutrition so you could expect to see you hair, skin and nails start to suffer on top of tiredness.

Weight Loss Out of abject curiosity, does your metabolism have anything to do with how cold/warm your body temperature is? Nov 10 2009
13:11 (UTC)

My metabolism is more or less controlled by tablets (as I have no thyroid) the first thing you notice with even tiny weeny changes in your levels are how hot or cold you feel so it would make sence.

Actually thinking about it if you feel the cold more than most people and have trouble losing weight it might not be a bad idea to get your thyroid checked.

Yes a thyroid problem can happen fast, but you'd be freezing cold, depressed, and your skin would be really really dry.

Sometimes before starting out on a journey it's a good idea to find out where you are.

I'd recommend a week where, rather than change anything, you record everything (food and activity in the logs). Knowing what you are doing and measuring (weighing if possible) what you eat will help you to see where you can make some easy changes (trying to do everything at once or too quickly can be a reason to give up at the start).

Also take measurements, waist, hips, arms and thighs. It's really great to see the inches come off even when your weight gets stuck.

emma is right and taking it slow works as long as you acept you won't see results fast.

If you stuck to 1600 however you will find that the hunger only lasts a few days and that by including lots of filling but low calorie food like most vegetables you can eat lots and feel full on 1600.

When you're ill it's best to listen to your body.

A good chicken soup is awesome though it is proven to have everything ill people need and is light on the stomach. The most important thing is keep fluids up.

Oh lighten up! I only said ice cream because seriously....... under-eaters need salt sugar fat calcium...

My main point stands: eat food, it's good for you, even bad food (when the sight of one more handful of almonds just doesn't cut it) is better than no food.

120lbs is a perfect, slim weight for your height. But anything less is straying into an area you really don't want to be in. NO teen should ever eat less than 1500 calories a day.......

Ideally you should keep up the exercise and aim to eat 2300 calories a day. This will mean you get fit and 'toned' but still get the nutrition you need and stay a healthy weight.

Weight Loss Impossible to lose more than 2lb bodyfat per week? Oct 21 2009
12:45 (UTC)

It's possible to do a lot of things but losing more than 2lbs a week doesn't work in the long run.

Eating a deficit of more than 1000 calories until you can't stand it any-more isn't teaching anyone how to eat for life and so people then put the weight back on over the next few months.

Eating in a way you intend to keep up forever (including a realistic amount of indulgence) and exercising an amount you intend on keeping up forever might not lose you more than 2lbs a week (in fact some weeks it might not lose you anything) but once you do get to the correct weight you'll stay there for life.

If you've only eaten 800 calories all day and you're not in bed with flu you make your self eat..... even if it's ice cream.

If this happens too often though maybe try eating a larger lunch and just snacking in the evening, under eating prevents weight loss, so it's not worth starving.

A lot of underwieght people put weight on their stomach. It's to do with the body's reaction to under-eating, once you stay at that new weight for long enough it gets redistributed else where. Avoiding this is not a good reason to stay under weight.

Increasing your fitness and upping calories (Jane's suggestion of 2500 sounds spot on) to help put on weight in a healthy manner would be a good goal for you. If you have a very small frame then a gain of about 12lbs is probably all you need.

I just wanted to add: a 15 yr old doesn't weigh what a 16 yr old or a 17 yr old does..... At that age I weighed about 100lbs....... I'd be very ill if I was that thin now.

You have to be sensible about your goals as a teen.

Original Post by stinkypillow:

18, 162 cm, 55-56 kg.thanks =)

You have a perfect (ie at the low end but healthy) BMI of 21, you need 2284 calories a day to maintain healthily if you are moderately active.

Until the age of 21 your muscles, organs and skeleton are still developing so the sort of diet you are on is not healthy. I used healthyeatingcalculator to get this information.

EDIT: The reason you have not lost any weight despite eating too little is your body will resist becoming under weight. Don't be surprised if after a month or two of eating properly you have put on a very small amount. To lose this you would want to eat no lower than 1700 calories until it goes and then go back up to 2284..... this way you'll be at your healthiest.

Weight Loss Calorie advice: Dieting but not losing. BTDT? Oct 13 2009

I definitely haven't been there (not that my metabolism is that fast) but with these sort of numbers creating a deficit by eating less food is mad.

Eat maintenance for you and really up your exercise, cardio will help build a calorie deficit and strength training will help increasing your metabolism. Eating more/enough should mean wheh you have lost the weight you get to try eating more which will in turn raise your metabolism.

I understand everyone is different, but that's why 'dieting' doesn't work for all we all need to find what works for us and in many cases food management alone just isn't enough.
