What a nice way to make yourself feel good for your acocmplishment!  Helping others also raises your own self-esteem and will make you want to continue your journey...congrats on your awesome weight loss--very inspirational idea--good luck -- and what a nice selection of healthy foods--I see so many food donations filled with junk food and high caloric foods---those in need should be able to eat healthy foods as well!

Health & Support thin, fat, curvy, athletic.... why can't we ever be good enough? Jul 09 2009

I think variety is the key to everything--especially as far as the human body is concerned!  There are people who are attracted to very very obese people; very very thin people; athletic builds; model builds; etc. etc.

I feel bad for young ladies because they have such mixed messages from all source--media, friends, family, boyfriends, etc. Even when you reach my age, you still are influenced by others, but a lot less...it is easier to be comfortable in your own skin, but sometimes, there is the urge to make this skin the best IT can be for yourself...

I have an athletic build and will never be model thin...already went through the eating disorder thing when I was in my 20's to try to be something my body could never be...now I just accept that I can tweak what I already have to the best it can be (ie. healthy and thinner, but still athletic!).

I think you should do the things you love, ie. rowing (which I also love) and hang around people who support your athletic lifestyle, guys and girls...it helps to have people like you around to give you perspective...

Believe me, some young men are threatened by strong women (physically or emotionally!)--but then, who wants them? You will find that there are plenty of young men out there who are strong and confident enough to admire and cherish young women who care about themselves and display inner beauty and a sense of self-love!

Work hard at getting healthy and only good will come of it!

There you guys are! I figured out how to tag this forum--sorry, that I have missed out on so much!

Hope to be more active now that I can find you guys! ha ha

Thank goodness for your journals or else I would not know how anyone is doing!

This has been a good week for me excercise-wise!  I have made 3 Zumba classes and 2 weight lifting sessions...I still need to work on meal planning at dinner, so I am searching for easy fix meals...there is so much on here and I have been printing like mad!

Also need to get in more veggies--mmm--asparagus sound yummy! I just read on REAL AGE that oatmeal is the best cereal for keeping the heart cleaned out...good thing I love it, but usually I don't feel like eating a hot breakfast in the summer. I have been eating the whole grain Cheerios, which I love! I have been trying hard to keep up with 1600 calories, but I seem to be stuck right around 1400.  I added an extra 1/4 c soy milk to the cereal and am going to add another veggie at lunch.  A few pretzel sticks should do the trick--I found some pretty good pumpernickel ones!

Hope everyone is eating better and excercising..and enjoying the nice cool weather (here in Pennsylvania, anyway!)...

ooo--almost forgot--I decided to have hubby take some pics so that I can post before shots!  I think this will really motivate me--I just made friends with someone here who has a whole line of pics and it sure is cool to see the changes visually! Of course, he has lost over 60 pounds, so it is really remarkable change!  Do any of you think this is motivating and if not, can you share your experience?

You guys are awesome with your suggestions!

I just wrote a whole bunch down and now I have no excuse for snacking at work!

I have a couple of those freezer blocks that I can throw in my totebag along with my snacks to get me to work...I love the make ahead ideas and need to go get little snack bags and screw on cap containers...

Thanks for asking the question and thanks for the great ideas...what a great group of people we have on this site! No wonder I am losing weight after months of "failure"...these tips are great.

This looks like a good group to be in--I hope to soon be out of it by getting under 200 pounds! Wink

I weigh in at just over 200 pounds (I am 5'7") but I have been that way for two years now, despite my regular excercise program...so, I know it is the eating I am having problems with...

I am hoping to just to stay motivated because it is so frustrating for me to work out so hard and not lose weight at all!

I don't have children, so my gain is from just plain thinking that I can eat like I did when I was in my 20's!  I have gained weight slowly but surely as the years have gone by...5 pounds a year adds up quickly!

I have very very modest goals...I want to lose about one pound a week.

My first step is to journal my daily thoughts to gain insight and to keep a food log...which I absolutely hate, but I know it is necessary...I hope to be in a group that is supportive of the successes and especially the failures and frustrations...I think it will take a lot of help to get this done!

I loved reading the Memorial Day posts! I told my DH that everyone has a real life and that weight, health, and excercise are just part of each of you...sometimes I focus too much on these things and it ruins my everyday living and enjoyment!

I feel pretty good about this weekend because it was a mix blend of doing something around the house (painted two exterior doors out back!), doing something with Jim (he played drums at the Blues Festival here in Hershey, PA), something with friends (dinner at our best friends' house), and something for me (reading reading reading!).

I also walked, did a zumba class, and lifted weights with Tom...and, started catching myself eating that invisible food again...I actually think I lost a few pounds as my jeans feel loose today!

My goal this week is to continue being aware of my snacking or adding extras to my salad, etc. To encourage my new friends (and myself) to keep attending zumba classes...and, to try to focus less on my body and more on my life!

ha ha We might end up being the red door ladies!  My front door is called crabby apple red! ha

Thanks for the water tip--I KNOW to drink water but I forget and need reminding--I bet I only drank four glasses yesterday!

Before my physical in July, I am going to really buckle down and make sure that I am not lying to myself about the number of calories I am eating...I bought a spiffy new notebook to log everything because I am sure how much time I will have to log in to CC each day...I probably will catch up on the weekends only...

Press on ladies! I am thankful that my husband loves to grill because it sure will help in keeping me fairly on track this holiday weekend...well, except for the drinking beer part...ugh...ok--two beers only...and low carb ones...that is my plan --thank goodness also that he is not big on desserts...he actually likes jello with low cal whip cream and blueberries!

Happy weekend!

Hello, everyone--I'd like to thank moonduster for pointing me to this group!

I just spent one hour with my trainer this morning doing legs and just about crying my eyes out to him because I am so frustrated with not being able to lose weight! I know I am in the best physical shape of my life as far as muscle tone and stamina and being able to keep up with way younger women in zumba and kickboxing, but all those things mean nothing to me because I still weigh 200 pounds! I have been this weight for two years now...even my trainer is baffled and focuses on my shape, lost inches, etc. I keep a food log for him, and yes, I do "cheat" a bit, but not enough to not lose weight according to various formulas, etc.

How can that be? What would I weigh if I did not exercise and diet? 400 pounds?

So, I am here to get all the information I can...tips, tricks, scolding, praise,--I need all of it to figure this out!

I am 55 years old, 5'7"--most of my weight is in my belly--the muscles underneath are hard and great, but I can't get rid of the jiggly layer on top! I am turing into a rectangle shape with no waist whatsoever! I hate it! My hips are small but my shoulders are wide, so maybe I am turning into a man...Laughing

At any rate, I hope to gain from successes and learn what everyone else is doing--and perhaps just get some support that there is hope or at least go down fighting! ha ha

Weight Loss Being Active= weight gain? May 21 2009
20:44 (UTC)

I used to be mystified by how many people actually gained weight once they started excercising...my sister's advice to me when that happened was to tell me to stop weight lifting! bad bad advice....

I think you need to give it time and don't get obsessed with the scale...see how you feel, how your clothes fit, and stick to it, and keep up the good work--this is a life long change, not a "I need to fit into a dress by this Sunday.." deal!

It took me about three months before I noticed any change in measurements from my workouts--my weight has been the same for two years, but I have gone from a size 16/18 to a size 8/10.

Good luck!

Weight Loss Frustrated by the plateau May 21 2009

Congrats on your weight loss!

I work with a personal trainer and we both got very frustrated because I was not losing weight doing training 3 days a week and cardio 4 days a week...I was on a 1200 calorie meal plan...we upped the calories to 1500 and then I started losing weight!

I stalled again, but the next time, it was because I had snuck in some calories that I "forgot" about--you know, a couple bites of french fries, 1/2 a bagel, a few nuts, one or six Hershey kisses, etc....even 200 calories can stall you out when you get older (I am 55)...

Hang in there! You must not give up--I think the ONE thing dieters need a lot of is persistence---slow and steady wins the race!

It is true that you will gain weight from muscles being built, but that is good weight. Strength is very important, especially as you get older...also, you do not need to worry that you will look like a guy, bulking up---women have too much estrogen to have that happen.

I started lifting weights at the age of 53 and wished that I had started way earlier!  It has given me a lot more confidence as I feel strong and powerful...it makes you feel like a big cat---if I were you, I would book a couple sessions with the personal trainer at the place you work out to learn form and how not to get injured...it is the quickest way to get on the right track...you will love it!

By the way, I can do 40 pushups, not knee ones...and I am working on one handed...so if an "old" lady like me can do it, so can you! You will get better and better each night, so keep it up!  It took me two years, but it was worth it!

Congrats for your weight loss and awesome workout ethic!  You inspire me to continue my cardio to lose weight!  Thanks.

Thank you for bringing up your fears, sasquatch7...and also, thanks for the replies, especially, gingin35!  You brought out so many things I feel as well, and I know it is keeping me from losing any more weight...

It is so good to find a forum that addresses not only the basics of calorie intake and excercise, but also, what is going on in the head that makes this a WHOLE process and not just an instant fix...I think I am going to like this site and hopefully, reach my goals finally!
