| Foods | How to cut sodium intake? | Feb 14 2009 22:02 (UTC) |

Let me just clarify for everyone that this is NOT a major health issue for me. I am only 21 years old and I'm trying to reduce my sodium as part of living a healthier lifestyle, NOT because I've been told to by a doctor as necessary for my health. I'm trying to avoid possible problems for 20-30 years in the future. I exercise 4 days a week (trying to get in shape for wedding day), so I'm sure I'm sweating out enough sodium for it to not be a huge issue if I get up to 2600-3000mg one or maybe even two days out of the week. The most I've ever had on a log was 3400mg, once. My concern was that I had ALREADY cut back on packaged stuff so dramatically and I was still seeing the occasional over 2500mg day, eating more or less the same things. -> @ susieque: one dill pickle spear = 4 cals, 263 mg sodium, 11% DV -> @ christinavt: not gonna post a whole log, but here's my soy protein (directly from the label). Also, I hadn't thought about the BBQ sauce I put on my chicken sandwich, thanks! -> @ johnnypenso: Your point about nutrigrain bars is valid, though I'm not getting 2000 calories from that alone. They are part of a bigger problem, and perhaps I'll have an apple instead a few days a week. -> @ coilman: I'd love to know the foods you've found. Please post them or send me a message. -> @ mars_0112: I don't have the time (nor space) to use frozen raw chicken breasts. I already bake my own wheat bread every weekend that uses one tsp of salt for two loaves. Also, what is greek yogurt? I've never seen it. Thank you everybody for helping me! I agree, I definitely need to add more vegetables, and I'm looking for more ways to do that. Right now it's mostly canned (no salt added) french cut green beans and spinach with my chicken or pasta. I also love squash and zucchini, but they are not in season right now. |

I've already cut back on packaged stuff dramatically, no more hot pockets, only occasional tuna helper, lot less pickles too. Maybe it's from the meat I eat? Chicken, Tuna, Burgers? I check all my labels and nothing is above 10% DV except those sometimes. |

You could try just finding each item you ate separately on CC. It won't be exact, but it will give you a nice ballpark estimate. |

Ditto to other posters. Too much C can give you the runs, but only at like 15x or more of the daily reccommended intake, or something crazy like that. I take a C supplement that gives me 833% DV and have no digestion issues. |

I always log mine as circuit training, but only if I don't take any long rests between different exercises. Today I logged like 20 minutes of "circuit training" for 20 minutes working on squats, lunges, and leg press. Hope this helps! |

I've always been a "cold" person. I'm always the one turning up the heater, putting on extra layers, etc. Anything below room remperature requires at least a light jacket. I've noticed however, that after I work out, I'm able to stay warm for a while. I'll go into the gym with a sweatshirt on, and when I leave, I'm quite warm for the entire drive home with no sweater. Then at home, I "feel" warm, but my skin is really cool to the touch. I usually continue to "feel" warm, despite the feel of my skin for the rest of the day. So possibly I have some circulation problems and being active helps get the blood moving, thus keeping me warm for longer? |

Some people say you shouldn't eat after 9pm or within x hours before going to bed because your metabolism starts to slow down (or many other reasons). |

Thanks for all of the suggestions. Yes, I'm eating enough calories and balanced meals. My deficit is usually only 400-450 calories a day (I've found if I go over 500 deficit I lose no weight!). I have to eat about every 4 hours even during the day otherwise I get too hungry and end up binging and feel like crap. When I posted this, it was after midnight and I had not been able to fall asleep for two hours because of my hunger. My gurgling stomach even woke up my fiance! I'll try some of the suggestions. I cannot have bananas because I am allergic and I can't have too much milk or I get sick, but maybe a small glass will help. I also like the idea of splitting my dinner into two halves and eating them a few hours apart. |

I've taken to making my own bread. For about $5 I can make 10 to 12 loaves (of whole wheat!). It has a few more calories than store-bought bread, but I know exactly what's in it! Plus I can add oats or anything else I want to it. |

I also (like josna) have noticed that I get fewer outbreaks when I eat less dairy. I had really bad acne for a while and my mom suggested it could be from diary (I love cheese!) so I cut all of it out for a month and my acne was almost completely gone. I think this is more of a mild allergic reaction though... |

| Weight Loss | How can I tone up for summer?? | Dec 01 2008 21:01 (UTC) |

I was using the BMI tool on this site which says 20-24 is normal and under 20 is underweight. I checked wikipedia and you are right, 18.5 to 25 is normal, but under 18.5 is considered underweight. I didn't mean to offend you. Walking is indeed good exercise, but your original post was concerning getting toned for summer. I agree with bre above that pilates is good for toning. Also yoga or moderate weight lifting (sometimes I use my book bag) will also work. My point still stands that it will be very hard to tone AND lose weight. Concentrate on how your clotes fit rather than the number on the scale. |

Right now your BMI (Body Mass Index) is barely in the "normal" range at about 20.4 (20 to 24 is "healthy"). If you lose the 5 lbs you are hoping you'll be classified as underweight with a BMI of 19.5. You are already at a healthy weight. Don't stress about losing 5 lbs, if anything you could stand to put a little on in the form of muscles. Muscles are what gives you the tone you want anyway. Walking is not going to help you tone. Unless you are overweight (which you obviously aren't) you can't both lose weight and gain tone. Keep with your previous workout and you will probably see results in the form of toning your muscles. Good luck! |

I used to be on Depo Provera and that made it very EASY to put on weight. I've been off all BC now for about 9 and I'm using a natural, non-hormonal method. I take my basal body temperature (waking temp) every day by mouth and chart it. Based on info in that link and elsewhere I can predict when I ovulate so I know when to use protection. If I'm not near ovulating, then no protection is needed. Failure rates are only 0.1-3% ish, but you have to do it for 3 months to get a baseline for accurate prediction and can't be on other hormonal contraceptives because it messes up the temps. Ok, sounds like a lot of work, but it really takes about the same amount of time as taking a pill every day, and you don't even have to get out of bed to do it! Plus this website will predict your ovulation day for you. Overall, it has been soooo much incredibly easier to lose weight not being on hormonal contraceptives. I'm losing the max "healthy" weight per week (2lbs/week) and I've not hit a "wall" in losing weight yet! Good luck whatever your choice is! |

I haven't been, but my Aunt went there for her undergrad and Vet school like 30 years ago. She said it was really good and she still donates because she thinks they have really good programs. Good luck! |

Throw away your scale. Seriously. It will remove the temptation of wanting to check if you've gained weight every day. |

First off, congratulations on your weight loss! It is an encouragement to me! I don't know everything about your relationship, but as long as you are sure you ended it because of problems with the relationship, and NOT because you now think you can get someone "better," I'd say it's a good choice for you. Don't be afraid to tell your family, because if it is what is best for you, they will be happy for you. I know 4.5 years with someone is a lot (being with my bf and now fiance for 3 yrs) and it may feel like you are throwing all that time away, but if it saves you from a lifetime of unhappiness, it is all ok. On the other hand, it sounds like he really tried to be the right person eventually, and possibly make up for the mistakes he made in the past. Relationships aren't always "exciting" and they lose the "newness," but that doesn't mean they are not good anymore. You can't make a relationship feel "new" for 50 years, or even 5! The fact is, it seems he really tried to be your Mr. Right, although a little delayed. If you think he is really sincere about it, and it feels right now, and you think he will continue to be Mr. Right and respect you and cherish you when you are married, I'd say you should try to reconcile things with him. Let him know up front that he's hurt you in the past and that's why you are unsure about starting a future with him. Good luck! Either way, you should talk to him and let him know why you ended it. Be open about it, but not rude. Think of it as "constructive criticism." |

| Young Calorie Counters | Anyone else trying to lose weight during college? | Oct 27 2008 19:19 (UTC) |

Not only is the problem losing weight in college, being busy with everything else I am as a college student and planning a wedding for next year, but it's also sooo easy to take in extra calories! Going out late to study at restaurants and partying on the weekends does not help. My biggest problem is being so busy and not having time to plan a healthy meal, let alone have time for the gym. It doesn't help that my housemate always wants to feed me, and she's over 300 lbs. I don't want to be rude, but if I eat what she eats I will look like she looks!
