| Foods | my 'cheat days' are getting out of hand... help please! | May 20 2009 15:10 (UTC) |

See that was a very active day. and im guessing you burned anywhere between 6-800 kcal for the run, some more for the power walk and housework on top of your normal daily burn. im guessing thats over a 1000kcal+ for you there. On days where you are particularly more active you could indulge in a prtionned snack like i mentionned earlier. helps keep me sane :) |

| Weight Loss | How long does it take to form new habits? | May 19 2009 16:01 (UTC) |

echoing the above sentiments. in my own experience and i read somewhere too (cant remember) that it takes 21 days for your brain to recognise a routine. so really at least 3 weeks before your body/brain recognises that your in a routine but you yourself can form new habits in whatever time frame your able to handle etc |

The problem i see emerging in this thread is people referring to eating as cheating. For me i make sure my diet is balanced and fait and i always have that certain treat i want provided i dont do the dog on it! I am increadably active thoughtyraining around upto 12 hours aerobic activity a week. easily at least 1.5hrs a day. This is becuase of my job and my own particular interests.
However i stronly believe that if people refer to it as chating it implies evil and or wrong doing and thus will end up just over bingeing. If you allow a small treat into your life, make sure you are active and have a balanced diet all will be well. Of course there is always an exception to the rule. For me today this is a very typical day; breakfast 7am - 30gms porridge with water, 2 eggs scrambled with mushrooms and tomatoes and pineappkle. 10.30am - coffee, apple, 40grams brazil nuts Lunch 1pm - Tuna, peppers, brocilli, boiled chicken breast, cucumber, beetroot and spinach on a bed of salad leaves and vinegarette dressing
4pm - just had 150gms of cottage cheese and a slice of guiness fudge
tonight for dinner i am preparing my self a veg dtirfry with prawns and sweet potatoe.
There is a farmers market here in my college every tuesday and that's where i got the fudge. i also fit in a 2hr cycle today. Some other days i would have a couple squares dark chocolate like lindt 86percent or if i want a biscuit ill grab 2 but not more. i always have a proportionned treat everyday and thus dont ever see a need to have a day where i eat away a whole days worth of calories on nutritionless food. i just dont see the point but then again what applies to me doesnt apply to anybody else as we are each to own and work differently. its a mental state that can be altered . of couyrse i am no angel and have had days where i just overeat on crap. there is also a big difference between bingeing and over eating. just my own two cents really.

its very simple. you need to eat fiber but you are eating ALL FIBER! too much fibre leads to bloating, constipation or gas or all 3 symptoms. google too much fibre and you will see what im talking about |

google couch to 5k or do a thread search. This is a very good program for virgin runners and will condition them to be able to run 5k.
remember take it slow and BUNDLE UP in this cold weather. under armour, hat and gloves are essential as are good running shows with proper supprt.
good luck! |

I agree-everyday i have grapefruit, cantaloupe and honey dew melon, banana, pineapple, apple and find no side effects at all. whereas if i consume some processed sugar like high fructose corn syrup i almost always feel groggy a while later
fruit fills you for longer and tastes good too. Remember-it's from the earth-its natural-go for it :) |

when suffering from shin splints RICE Rest Ice Compression Elevation Dont aggrevate those shins-build up to it. when they are flaring up do cross train with activities that dont aggrevate it even further

i can relate
im from ireland but im over in the states on study abroad in upstate new york. as you can imagine, it was a HUGH culture shock. espically with food as the foos options on campus are the worst iv seen in my life(back home we have kitchens and cook for ourselves in college-no horriblr dining halls!!) and it's next to impossible to find unbuttered or un salted popcorn, unsalted nuts and everything has high fructose corn syrup. so it was a big change regulating my diet but iv done it.
there are lways ways. i know its stressfull cos of CHANGE-but its good to change. maybe hre a personnal trainer for a session or two and get on a decent weghts program and supplement that with running.
all the best |

Is there a track near where you live where you could run? or a loop. What is good is do a circuit of the loop jogging-then different exercises for 45 seconds and continue on for a loop again
for example-jog one loop-45 sec tuck jumps-jog another loop-45sec burpees-jog another loop-sprint on the spot-another loop-45sec plank and so on and you can vary the intensity to you level of fitness. these exercises suit from beginner to elite.
if that above is not possible why not begin to run or jog-brilliant cardio. nothing like an hour crunching gravel to get rid you of any anxiety and release those endorphins! In fact iv come up withmy best ideas and solutions to problems while running. Just make sure to layer up in this cold weather. |

I train before 7am on tue, wed and thu and personally cant get through a gruelling workload without food in my system but thats ecause its cardio. if i where to do weights i woulsd have a tiny bite carb /protein wise. I always have a good brekkie afterwards. give the body what it deserves |

LOL never ever thought about that but i did know that. A passenger on the Titanic survived in the artic waters from drinking a bottle of whiskey just before the ship went down. doing a shot wont get your heart rate up though for exercis. dont see any benefit at all-unless you feel the need to take a shot beforehand just to get throug your training ;) |

God no-i eat more-3 meals and 2 mini meals--i need to with the amount of training i do its just that the 3rd meal is consisting of the same foods as the other 2.
i have almond butter or peanut butter everyday. its just that food choices are limited here to be changing my diet since i already spent 1500euros on this meal plan before i came over.
i do go to stop and shop here occasionally and buy food to change it up but an exchange student cant keep doing this as it all adds up.
anyway-much better now that i cut broccoli and apples out already and some whole grains. NEVER was constipated though-just gassy. my problem i think was definatly too much fiber and when i train i crave carbs-my diet was too consisted of too much carbs as id eat more in quantity of them in relation to the other foods. i always eat healthy and its harder here than home in Ireland because of CRAPPY DINING HALLS-who came up with these horrendous ides-no wonder people here put on the freshman 15--too much processed foods. RANT OVER!!!!!!!!!!
ill just have to change it up a bit and not e too dependent on the same foods. only 3 weeks left here though so whoopie!!!
Thanks everyone |

Problem sorted-i was having WAY too much fiber for my system to handle. i eat good quality foods. Backed of now for 2 days from so much fiber and already a dramatic increase in quality. substituted appleas and pears for other fruits. cut back on the whole grains and substituted the brocilli and eggwhites for other veg. |

Sounds a bit like patella tendonitis but then again that usually happens moreso with sports that involve jumping or aything thats too high impact on the knee. I had this a few times before and it was worse when i did static lunges and squats so if by any chance you are palying sports too it couls be this. |
