Making extra dinner and packing it for lunch is definitely a great option. For lunch today I had a bowl of leftover caponata and green beans, to which I added half a can of tuna. It was delicious and so healthy! |

I worked with a trainer once a week for a year, and made a lot of progress. Before I would just head for the machines, because they were easy to understand and I didn't have to worry about embarrassing myself with free weights. She got me into dumbbells, kettlebells, bosu ball squats and all sorts of other things I never would have had the gumption to do on my own. When I decided to get a trainer, I shopped around a bit, had a couple sessions with people I didn't bond with, and then found Lisa. She was great--always pushing me, and changing things up when it got too easy. Now I can work out on my own with confidence, but I wouldn't hesitate to go back to her if I needed an extra push. The free sessions a gym gives you are no substitute for the kind of relationship you build if you see someone every week. It is expensive, but it totally changed my perspective on exercise and was well worth the investment! |

I certainly wasn't talking about "sluttiness" when I said she wasn't a good role model. I meant that since she has undergone a lot of cosmetic surgery her look, if that's what you want to call it, is unattainable for most women on this site. And unhealthy. Any beauty goal that requires surgery to attain is just very sad, imho. |

| Motivation | A Vow To Myself | Nov 08 2009 20:52 (UTC) |

Sweeping vows are all well and good, but the best thing to do is pick one thing that you want to change, and work on that until it becomes a habit. Trying to fix everything at once will leave you feeling overwhelmed. You might try cutting out junk food first, or incorporating half an hour of exercise into your daily routine. Baby steps seem frustrating when you are fired up to change everything NOW. But you will make far more progress with slow and steady than you will by taking a few giant steps and then giving up because you can't maintain the pace you have set for yourself. Remember --you didn't get this way overnight, and it will take time to achieve your goals. You can do it! |

| Fitness | RUNNERS--what do you think of when you're running? | Nov 05 2009 07:51 (UTC) |

I listen to music on my ipod--a special running mix with lots of heavy rock and upbeat tunes. And I look at the scenery, watch where I am putting my feet (I usually run on gravel roads) and keep an eye out for dogs and mountain-bikers. Running outside is never boring, but I cannot abide treadmills. |

Set some new "healthy" objectives for yourself. When I got close to my goal weight, after losing about 40 lbs, I started trying to improve my fitness levels by running. I started with the C25K program. Now I've decided to participate in a half-marathon next September, and will be focusing on increasing my distances gradually over the next ten months. We all need goals to keep us motivated, and even though I am no longer counting calories, eating properly helps me towards my new destination! When I reach it, then I will push myself to run a marathon, or take up swimming or kayaking... You get the idea. |

| Recipes | low fat verison of Chex Puppy Chow? | Oct 29 2009 23:41 (UTC) |

My friend Dena, who lost 150 lbs, has a good strategy. She eats healthily for 20 meals a week, and then allows herself a Sunday night blowout. Whatever she wants to eat + dessert. She has maintained her weight for five years this way. I think this is an excellent way to have something to look forward to each week. So make your Puppy Chow on Sunday night, just enough for one serving, and enjoy! |

| Foods | Fish | Oct 11 2009 21:28 (UTC) |

No offense Claire, but looking at that site you recommended leaves me with the feeling that have a not-so-hidden agenda in encouraging people to eat less fish. They are the "Sea Turtle Restoration Project," and they want to see commercial fishing curtailed. You can find this out by looking at the website. http://seaturtles.org/article.php?list=type&a mp;type=34 Not that there is anything wrong with wanting to save sea turtles, but scare-mongering about mercury isn't the way to do it, imo. The OP should look at:http://www.fda.gov/Food/FoodSafety/Product-Sp ecificInformation/Seafood/FoodbornePathogensC ontaminants/Methylmercury/ucm115662.htm to get the FDA's official advisory. |

| Foods | eating pumpkin | Oct 10 2009 07:12 (UTC) |

In New Zealand we eat pumpkin as a vegetable. You don't need to do much to it. Cut off the hard rind, whack it into largish chunks, brush with a little olive oil and bake for 30-45 minutes. I sometimes sprinkle on a little cajun seasoning to make a spicy winter vegetable treat. It is so amazingly good--and good for you. |

| Foods | How long will cooked rice/cooked quinoa keep in the refrigerator? | Oct 08 2009 20:58 (UTC) |

Brown rice keeps better in the refrigerator, at least as far as taste/texture are concerned. I don't know about the food safety aspect, but a little common sense goes a long way in preventing food-borne illness. I've certainly kept rice and quinoa chilled for a week with absolutely no problems. |

| Weight Loss | Is it O.K. to eat the same foods everyday????? | Oct 06 2009 00:58 (UTC) |
10 |
Remember our hunter/gatherer ancestors, who did not have access to the unbelievable array of foods that we do today, only varied their diets seasonally. Otherwise they ate the same stuff day after day--basically whatever they could hunt, and what grew wild in their neighborhood. The human body is designed to cope with a wide range of different eating styles. If what you are doing works for you then by all means keep doing it. |

| Fitness | Exercise bras? | Sep 22 2009 08:20 (UTC) |

Don't know if you can find Bendon brand bras where you are, but they make an underwire sports bra that works phenomenally well. It is a little bit hard to get in and out of, but once it is in place then everything stays put. Best of all it comes in a bunch of colors, and has reflective strips, so if it is warm enough and you are feeling sassy, you can wear it as a top. |

| Fitness | running shoes, help please? | Jul 21 2009 22:11 (UTC) |

I'll be the lone dissenter here. Don't spend a lot of money on fancy running shoes. There is quite a bit of research that indicates that the more you spend on shoes (I did say more) the more likely you are to get injured. Have a look at this abstract: http://bjsportmed.com/cgi/content/abstract/31 /4/299 And there is other evidence on the web if you hunt around. Don't be fooled by expensive advertising! |

| Foods | Freezing pre-shredded cabbage? | Jul 20 2009 01:26 (UTC) |

You really would be better off buying a whole cabbage and cutting up what you need. It would be much cheaper, for one thing, but more importantly fruit and vegetables lose quite a bit of their nutrition if you store them cut, even in the refrigerator. It doesn't take very long to wash and chop a few cabbage leaves. Five minutes maybe? |

| Vegetarian | On the topic of 'Honey' -- | Jun 08 2009 05:49 (UTC) |
32 |
I'm not a vegan, but I do keep bees, so maybe I can have a say in the discussion. It is very important to keep the bees in the hive "happy" and healthy, because, as one poster mentioned, there is nothing to stop them from leaving if they don't like their environment. Every vegan benefits from the hard work of bees, whether they eat honey or not. Bees are responsible for the pollination of a vast majority of the world's grain and vegetable crops. Without bees there would be very little to eat! We beekeepers help them do their jobs, and in return we take a little of their winter stores. I think it is difficult to argue against eating honey. Look at it as a symbiotic arrangement. |

Original Post by jondoefatso: I hate to intrude on your pity party, but the fact is--if you are healthy then you should be counting your blessings. Here is Dr. Suzanne's prescription: Stop focusing on "being thin" as if that ever made anyone happy. Don't exercise yourself into exhaustion. Eat foods you like that are good for you and also an occasional treat. Go and volunteer at a homeless shelter or hospice so you can understand that there are people in the world with way bigger problems than you. If you do these things I guarantee you will be a happier person. You might even lose weight. |

| Maintaining | is this bad? | May 26 2009 11:10 (UTC) |

I do weigh myself every day. It's such a habit first thing in the morning I can't imagine not doing it. But I don't freak out when the number goes up and down, as long as it stays within a certain range. I think it helps me stay focussed on maintaining, and I haven't gained any weght back yet, so I'm not about to mess with success. |

Yes, pgeorgian, it is funny how something like that gives you a different perspective. It certainly changed mine a lot. There is so much more to health than the numbers game and sometimes I feel like reaching into the computer and giving some of the posters on CC a good shake when I read about the UNHEALTHY things they do just to reach some "magic" number on the scale. |
